I'm ngl this year's resolution is probably going to be writing the delightful Araide/Okiya AU
#Not nearly enough people talk about how insane university is. And Shuuichi is right there. For his cover#He's got to make a few appearances and maybe take exams to make the cover believable#And in a weird but very ideal world Araide is going for a specialization and somehow it means they meet on campus#This also features Biology students who are absolutely fucking insane about their chosen field#Okiya-san from engineering WILL hear about cool slugs and he will LIKE IT#Also let's not forget the snogging. Subaru misses/arrives late to his exams bc he's too busy snogging Araide <- he is stupid ok#atlas.exe#akai shuichi#araide tomoaki#dcmk#detco#detective conan

Alright. Let's talk about Akai's and Furuya's fighting styles, control, and the ferris wheel fight, featuring some tangents on professionalism.
The second reason is the implied: Akai is (in general, probably not in this situation, because he is going along with the fight Rei wants) a professional, and professionals do not fight. A professional will either ambush or assassinate (you know, like the sniping Akai is so well-known for), and generally do everything in his power to avoid a fight. It's about gaining the advantage, pressing and keeping it, to maintain control over the situation. For comparison, fights are between people of roughly equal footing, and fighting follows rules. As a person who lives in the world of actual violence, Akai does not need the fancy dances of a fighting sport, he needs his rifles, guns, and a self-defense technique for when things go really bad and personal. (Incidentally, a professional will also plan, won't let his emotions get in the way, stay calm, and keep working in bad conditions - we also see these traits in Akai.) I can remember two instances of Akai fighting (there might be more)- the ferris wheel fight, and the one time he knocked out the people after Yumi (and arguably, they didn't really have a chance and it wasn't really a fight). Other than that, he's just coordinating and providing tactical support.
Akai using Jeet Kune Do for fighting is an interesting choice. It's not as well-known as many other fighting styles (hell, it's not even a fighting style, it's a self defense technique and really more of a philosophy or a principle), but it has a couple of key values that characterize him well. First off, it's hugely individualistic. Practitioner's are encouraged to find their own way, to find what works for them, which really is Akai in a nutshell, doing what he wants. Secondly, it is described as a highly efficient way to fight. There are few, if any, rules to Jeet Kune Do, you're expected to use whatever technique will help you the most in the moment. For this reason, it is also highly adaptable, and requires an appropriate mindset to use. This latter point, I think, really mirrors the approach the FBI has in the series - do what you need to in order to get the results we want, at whatever the cost.
The fact that it's a self defense technique is important for two reasons: one is the immediate one for our context - Akai's defending himself from an angry Rei on the ferris wheel.
With all that out of the way, let's get into the ferris wheel fight, and what we learn about them there.
For contrast, let's look at Rei. It's almost funny how little professionalism Rei has compared to Akai, when it comes to the world they're living in. Rei's choice of fighting style is boxing, and he's practicing a rather straightforward, aggresive version, with barely any defense, at great personal risk. That point about professionals not letting their emotions get in their way? Well, either Rei has never heard it, or he's deliberately ignoring it. Either way, it really holds him back from gaining and maintaing control.
(I would be remiss not to point out that boxing is also done for show, fitting for this show-off.)
Boxing might honestly be good for Rei in order get out his anger and to up his pain tolerance, but for the purpose of keeping him alive, it sucks. It's up close, it's personal, and it's dirty (that tagline might as well describe Furuya himself). A threat who's gotten into that range is already a problem. Sure, usually - though not in this instance - he's also got his handgun, with its limited reach, limited firepower. For his purposes, it might suffice - he's not supposed to be a fighter, and the advantage of his gun is in its concealability. I suppose he gets a couple points in professionalism for that choice, and for often bringing back-up, whether he's working for the PSB or the BO. For what it's worth, he's also likely trained in Kendo or something similar, as we see in Wild Police Story, but he doesn't really use it. We see Rei fighting rarely, but it happens; with Matsuda at the beginning of WPS, casually inflicting violence on a kidnapper, and now here on the ferris wheel.
It's so interesting to me how they interact here.
Despite both of them bleeding, it starts to feel like Akai is in control, or at least not dated by the fighting - he gets Rei good with Jeet Kune Do's signature One Inch Punch, but has enough presence of mind to casually grabs him so he doesn't fall to his death (which gets him shoved off with a foot. Give Furuya an inch, and he'll try to take your head). Furuya's meanwhile clearly enjoying himself, might have even entered the zone, a sort of battlejoy/trance, asking for a second round (here we go again, this is a fight, with certain rules, like rounds), and Akai, well, he's beaten up, but it doesn't look like he'd surrender to get Furuya off his back - despite it being an option that would end the fight early. We see both of them smiling at points in this exchange, and I think it speaks to both of them, inherently, being thrillseekers. Putting all they are into the outcome of this fight against a dangerous enemy is a thrilling brush with mortality.
Them fighting at all, on top of the ferris wheel, is stupid, plain and simple. They expect the BO to show up any minute, and they'd better be in peak condition - instead they indulge in this fight. Really, it's Rei launching himself at Akai, who's mostly dodging and defending where necessary (I say indulge, because he is armed, and could probably escalate/end the fight early). Fights happen for a variety of reasons, usually social (because otherwise we'd be talking about violence, not a fight), and this implies Rei sees Akai as roughly equal/wants him to have a fair fighting chance, following the social contract of announcing his presence. He launches the attack, takes the initiative but the distance is so large, and he telegraphs his intentions clearly enough that his advantage is minimal.
Akai has the distinct disadvantage of carrying his rifle case, protecting its contents, because he'll need them later. He is, as the series lets us know, a capable fighter (described stronger as Masumi, who can deal with Ran, an established capable martial artist), and we can see it in this fight. He's reading Rei's movements and blocking most of the hits - for what it's worth, Rei's style seems more focused on quantity of attacks over quality. He does get Akai with some unconventional angles of attack (like swinging up into a kick from falling), and mostly this initial struggle is about them fighting for control.
When we cut back to the fight, they're still at it. I find it interesting that Akai tries to talk Rei down throughout the fight. Because the presence of mind necessary to form coherent sentences in a fight is not nothing, and the fact that he at least tries to go for a different solution is noteworthy, even if it is ultimately useless.
Then Conan calls Akai. This is in a small pause to the fight, because, surprise surprise, fighting takes effort (another reason professionals avoid it). It is really funny to me how Rei respects the rules of a fight, but he also sees an opportunity in his opponent's distraction, and seizes it (at the cost of also throwing himself down into a chasm, the self-sacrificial bastard).
Only at this point does it feel like Akai is taking the fight more seriously. I'd wager this is a) because Rei has displayed the willingness to destroy himself to take Akai with him, b) due to the enclosed space - less space to dodge and c) because at least he is aware time is ticking. They're both injured, and the enemy is coming soon. This fight better be over quick.
They only don't fight each other to the death because of Conan's timely intervention. He calls to Akai for help, and just like that, the conflict is resolved, for now. Akai wordlessly rejects Rei's request for a second round, which Rei just...accepts. Allows Akai that level of control, and the control of the flow of information (namely, they don't tell Conan they've been at it). It baffles me, but then again, I suppose it is a fight, the fight has rules, and, clearly, something more important takes precedence. Then again, this whole damn exchange makes no logical sense. Rei has sworn bloody revenge on Akai, who just saved his life today, and instead of doing something about the BO they're fighting a little. Logic is nowhere to be seen, all of this is emotional. On both sides.
I guess bonus points in professionalism for working together for the rest of the rest of the movie, even if they're sharing intel with/depending on a literal child for the solutions to their problem. It's a very unusual set of circumstances indubitably not covered by their training, granted, so what can you do (I'd still love for the adults in this universe to do their job, sue me).
Last point of note for the movie, in my opinion, is Akai waiting after all the chaos is over for Rei to spot him. Is this a case of checking in and simultaneously showing that he, too, made it out alive? He is clearly noticed by Rei, and only then walks away. And Rei just lets him. Akai is in control, in the end.
#Akai is genuinely the more capable agent and I'm not surprised they've made a movie about him#I could carry on about how Akai-as-Okiya knows how to play his cover and avoid attention. even going as far as to retrieve KID's photos.#whereas Amuro lives a little too much in the limelight and certainly too close to the police who might have some people who knew him#he of course gets waaay more capable when his emotions don't blind him#but that would only be half the fun wouldn't it?#anyways. this post is brought to you by me rewatching the insanity that is m20#there are so many questions for this. chiefly: why was Akai even parked in front of the police HQ during Curacao's break-in#I have accepted the NOC list (insanely dangerous as it is) as a means to avoid the tragedy of Scotch and thus no longer question it#but yeah. how did people know curacao would strike that night?#also that fight is so cool but makes so little sense. very good characterization#we should really have been allowed to keep curacao#I guess she was too powerful#anyways#iris' late night rambles#akai shuichi#furuya rei#iris watches dcmk#long post

I'm going to be nice (for the first and last time in my life). Give us your thoughts on AkAm :)
wait what is this. coffee, are you okay?? (ship ask game here)
AkAm ✨
What made you ship it?
It started as a joke-
Okay, but it actually did, though. I was watching The Darkest Nightmare with some friends (years ago now) and we got to the ferris wheel fight and suddenly Akai and Rei stop fighting because Conan's shouting for them and I'm just like "those are Conan's divorced dads" and it stuck with me for years.
So I jokingly shipped them for years (I wasn't really involved in the fandom at that point, and wasn't going out of my way to look for content). And then early last year, I got dragged back into DetCo and have since fully embraced this pair. They have my whole heart.
Even if not for what happened in M20, we still have everything in canon (the whole Scar Akai thing, Rei deciding that Akai definitely isn't dead because how could Kir of all people get the better of him, he's too good for that, Rei's entire obsession, the Scarlet arc confrontation with "Okiya" that is so ridiculous on so many levels, etc). And then there's M26 and wow. Taking "Conan's divorced dads" to a whole new level. (And Rei needing Kazami to call to him twice to get his attention after that phone call, I see you Rei. I know what you are.)
They have so much chemistry, and their past is messy and complicated, but completely intertwined with one another due to their time together in the organization and the tragedy of Scotch's death. At this point, I don't think you can fully separate them, not without destroying part of what makes them them in the process.
Akai not telling the FBI about Bourbon (and I still stand by the fact that Gosho could've easily had James be like "oh yeah, Bourbon, Akai mentioned him" if he wanted me to believe that Akai wasn't protecting Bourbon), or the truth about Scotch. Rei single-mindedly focused on finding (and, yes, killing) Akai, but then deciding to at least temporarily be civil after the tea party (give us the tea party, Gosho!). Not to mention, all the times he brings up or thinks about Akai unprompted in ZTT, and the literal photo he has of Rye, stacked with Sherry and Conan. How, even though he hates Akai with every fiber of his being, he acknowledges that Akai should've been good enough to save Scotch.
They drive me absolutely insane. I love them. There's probably points that I've missed here, but we're already gonna have a novel with this one, so.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
They get each other. They've both been in the organization. They understand what it's like to do the dirty work, to have blood on their hands. They know how it feels to constantly wear a mask that you can't remove without risk of death.
They're both deeply traumatized individuals, and while that makes things complicated on the communication front, it also means that they can better support each other, because they understand trauma.
Rei's family has gone completely unmentioned, and Akai's is Complicated™ so neither of them likely would really have any expectation of a normal family. They can be each other's family now (well, post-canon).
When Rei's not trying to rip Akai to shreds, they work well together. They'd be a pretty unstoppable team if Gosho let them.
And the fact that Akai can see through Rei's masks even easier than Rei clocked Okiya being Akai without having ever met the man (even if he was tricked into believing otherwise at first) just makes me love them more.
I don't think there's anyone else in the entire series that can fully understand either of them the way they can each other. And even when they're not getting along (read: Rei's starting shit again), they still have a lot of respect for each other's skills.
Also the fact that Akai rarely uses any honorifics for anyone, but he uses -kun for Rei even from the Scarlet arc always gets me.
And how could I not love the "confrontation" in the Kudous' entryway, with both of them pointing guns at each other and Akai's fucking smiling like the idiot he is. That can't be healthy. They deserve each other.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I've struggled so much to come up with something for this question, and I think I've finally landed on something. I think my unpopular opinion is that I really didn't care for Akai before Rei showed up and we got their possibly onesided enemies-to-whatever-the-fuck-they-have-going-on. He just was not interesting to me. He was just standard "Wow Cool Awesome Man" character, even after his tragic backstory with Akemi.
And then Rei shows up and we get all of the mess and now he's my second favorite character and they belong together. (At least partially because nobody else deserves to be stuck with either of these two disaster men.)
#ship ask meme#enjoy the novel#i love them so much#don't ask me how many different wips i have for them because even i don't know#akam#furuya rei#akai shuuichi#detective conan#thank you for letting me ramble about them coffee <3

first snow || okiya subaru oneshot
title: snowfall day 1: first snow // getting soaked // "your hands are cold" // "i suppose it all started with the snow" fandom: detective conan character: okiya subaru wc: 479 oneshot (credit to @12daysofchristmas for the prompt) !!content under the cut!! a/n i need to make a conscious effort to not write subaru as akai help
he brought the hot chocolate to his lips as he gazed outside the window at the three children next door, accompanied by a bumbling old man and two other children hovering near the doorway, staring flatly at the others. he turned his attention back to his laptop, furrowing his brows slightly as he read over his (fake) thesis again.
"come to think of it," he heard a familiar voice at the door, "it's the first time since we met that it's snowed, isn't it?"
he hummed lowly in agreement, drawing his attention to you and letting you drape yourself around him - he wasn't a very physically affectionate person, he preferred to let his actions do the talking, but he supposed he didn't mind if it was just you and him behind closed doors.
"do you hate it?" at his confused gaze, you continued. "winter, i mean."
he wasn't quite sure.
winter was cold, but that meant warm nights by the fireplace and your hot chocolate that was a little too sweet (but he didn't mind). winter was unforgiving, but that meant early mornings spent under the covers with you. winter was bright (maybe a little too bright sometimes), but it wasn't as bright as you (maybe he had read a few too many of the romance books in the kudo mansion's library.) winter meant his hands weren't as flexible, but it meant you could hold his hand (and who was he to refuse).
(and he supposed it did give him a valid excuse to continue wearing that turtleneck the waiter at poirot despised.)
he stared back outside at the children. sensing someone was watching them, the three paused, grinning up at him and waving excitedly, jumping up and down.
"insufferable brats," you muttered, coming up next to him and pointedly ignoring their visible gasps and kissing acting.
"now, now," he hummed, smirking bringing you in closer and sparing a final glance outside the window at the now-cheering children.
"don't humour them," you grumbled, pushing him away slightly.
"why not?" he hummed, making no move to fight back and allowing himself to be pushed away.
he received no answer from you.
"so? why'd you come in here in the first place?" subaru continued, "surely you didn't come here to just interrupt my revision?"
"the professor - well, the kids - wanted us to come over to bake cookies with them and teach them how to have a 'proper snowball fight'," you quoted, scowling slightly as you recalled their cries indignation, "according to haibara and conan-kun, they're doing it wrong and so they'd like... another adult opinion."
his eyes shone in amusement behind his glasses, a flicker of challenge flashing in them.
"you sure you don't just want to see me get pummelled by elementary schoolers?"
you smirked.
"who knows."
he supposed this first snowfall with you wasn't so bad.

OBSESSED with the idea of KID coming into the Kudou mansion seeking refuge (either he got heavily injured or his idenity is compromised) but instead is met with Okiya Subaru, Kudou Yukiko, and Kudou Yusaku. (Conan is also there coincidentally because lady luck hasn't totally abandoned him yet, apparently, but Kaito is sort of distracted by the amount of non-conans in the house to appreciate it.)
one day (before akai moves in) conan drags kid's injured ass back into the kudou mansion to patch him up (and also to demand answers about the snipers in the heist)
kid refuses to tell more about the snipers and conan doesn't pry but keeps an offer of help open
it becomes an unspoken agreement that kid would go to conan if something out of his hand happens in relation to said snipers
by 'go to conan' conan meant go to him, the person, as in wherever location he was at. kid, on the other hand, thought he should come back to the kudou mansion.
months pass, subaru, yusaku, and yukiko come to occupy the kudou household.
kid, injured or identity compromised, sees the lights are on and assumes conan is inside. which well...he ISN'T WRONG (LOL)
kid goes in through the window of conan's room which startles conan who was there to pick something up in his room.
"What are you doing here?!" Conan scream-whispers in a panic.
KID stiffens and stares at him with something like betrayal in his eyes. "Oh, I see I'm not welcome here."
"No! No wait that's not what I meant. It's just, this is NOT the best time."
Someone knocks on the door and the two of them jump. KID's eyes widen in realization as Conan quickly drags and pushes him into a closet. "Don't make a sound." KID does a zipping motion across his lips and makes a show of throwing an imaginary key. Conan rolls his eyes at him before closing the door.
anyways, it was akai who went up to check on conan cause the 4 of them were in the middle of a discussion and conan was suspiciously taking too long.
whether kid gets caught by akai and the kudou fam or not, i have no idea, but either way I WANT IT.
although tbh i feel like akai and yusaku would sense someone else is inside and yusaku would know exactly who it is LOL
then again, whether kid is heavily injured, has his identity compromised, or both, is a big factor on how events will unfold. (and i love exploring each one so my brain is rotting pls someone send help)

People ship Amuro with many characters, but I just realised that characters on DC only assumed he dating Azusa, not with the others.
1. Amuro's fans (canon and movie)
Even though his fans don't like Azusa-san, they still assume there's a thing between Amuro-san and Azusa-san and write about it on social media (just like in real life).
2. Sonoko (canon)
Sonoko literally assumes and teases they are dating. Ran might also assume they're dating that time, I'm not sure about that, but she doesn't really help Azusa clear up the misunderstanding to Sonoko.
3. Kaito Kid (canon)
When Amuro says, "I love you, Azusa-san," the reaction of Kaito Kid who's disguised as Azusa shows that he assumes there is something between Amuro and Azusa.
If we connect it to the previous episode, Kid who disguised as Kazami, sees Amuro holding Azusa, so it's not surprising that he assumed Azusa would be happy when Amuro confessed his love.
4. Vermouth (canon)
When Vermouth disguises as Azusa, she hold onto Amuro's arm. Vermouth probably don't think they are dating, but sure she assumes they are that close.
5. Subaru Okiya aka Akai Suichi (one of the commemorative voice lines for the 100th volume)
Subaru Okiya says "I had no idea you were dating the waitress from Poirot." (Referring to Azusa), to which Amuro replies with "Y-Yeah, well..." instead of denying the misunderstanding and keeps going along with Okiya's questioning.
I copied that from AmuAzu trivia. I'm really curious about this trivia, though. Do you know where I can see or hear it?
6. Tsuruyama-obachan (ZTT)
Tsuruyama-obachan is AmuAzu shipper in ZTT, of course she assumes there's something between them. She even says that to Azusa when Amuro temporarily away from Poirot.
7. Kazami (ZTT)

In one of the ZTT chapters, Kazami thinks Amuro is inviting women to his apartment. Azusa is the first person he thinks of when he finds blonde hair in the bathroom, but he immediately denies it because her hair isn't blonde.
Even more interesting, Amuro never deny their assumptions. When Azusa tries to deny it, Amuro actually asks Azusa not to think too much about the fans. Amuro also doesn't deny when Sonoko teases them.
What do you think about it? Am I just making things up or have you also noticed other characters in DC assuming there is something between Amuro and Azusa? 🤭🤭
You are absolutely not making things up. Gosho was been planting the seeds for "something more" between them. like you just demonstred, he's bringing up the possibily off a relationship between them, using other characters.
If he will make these seeds bloom and make them an official couple is that we don't know (but I hope he does)
about the trivia, sadly I've tried to find a video of the app but couldn't. that I posted was based on posts on twitter by Japanese fans back then when it came out. sorry.
and thanks for the ask.

If requests are still open (and it pleases you), would you mind drawing a fem!Akai or Okiya with a cup of tea? I'd love to see her living out her British heritage, for once
(Oh no. Now I'm thinking about Amuro and Okiya politely, but ruthlessly, arguing about whether oolong tea or black tea is superior XD Rei is, as usual, this 🤏 close to drawing a weapon to make it clear that her arguments are superior. Meanwhile Akai, hiding her smile behind Okiya's facade, is way too amused by Rei's liveliness to really feel threatened.)
It actually got me really inspired and I didn't know there was a real debate for Oolong and Black tea (I've got way too invested)
I'm always so happy to get to draw genderbend characters! I feel like I took way too many liberties with this request, but I still hope you like it🥺
#I like to think Rei's hoping Okiya chokes on her tea#so she can make out with her sloppy style under the pretext of saving her#thank you so much#❤️❤️#teart

I like thinking about what Amuro has heard about KID secondhand considering the company he keeps. Azusa's a big enough KID fan to incorporate it into her blog, Sonoko idolises KID as do the Detective Boys (though they do it differently), Kogorou and Ran frequently are involved in heists not to mention Conan is the KID Killer who considers him a playmate of all things.
Rei's jurisdiction isn't Phantom Thieves but the general consensus seems to be that KID is a frenemy type figure to the Japanese police who they will catch not harm but can also use to their advantage when their goals align without much harm happening to them or the public (Zero seemed to have fun at the Queen's Bang too, it's nice to see him share the other detectives' desire to match wits with KID), though he'd a a good ally or a horrifying terrorist/assassin if he wanted to be. Does Rei suspect him of working with Akai or Vermouth courtesy of the Mystery Train? I kind of want to see Rei's reaction to finding out KID photographed Okiya's voice-changing choker in use.
I wonder what the Underworld thinks of KID and therefore Bourbon. Kaito's interacted with Chat Noir, Dark Knight: Nightmare, Lupin III, as well as Spider and Snake/Jackal & Rose. He helps some criminals, exposes others and is open to competition. He operates in the shadows and the spotlight but isn't exposed to either world, he's simultaneously exploitable and dangerous to mess with (he always gets payback). Generally if you leave him and his alone he leaves you alone though, he's not like a vigilante. His skills are high demand and his secrecy makes him anear urban legend if not for the media coverage.
If he did find out, Rei would be interested in the association with Vermouth, and be impressed that KID got that picture in the first place... even though he had to give it up.
As for the Underworld... hopefully, they either take advantage or leave well enough alone.

For @butter-pangcake's Yokai AU
and more specifically based on this post, I bring you the results of an entire day of procrastination <3 warning: may contain traces of scotchrye and the resident Cheshire Cat being a useless bisexual. Proceed with caution!
Summary:
Something is off about Shuuichi's self-appointed guide.
He should have paid more attention to those warnings of his.
Something is off about Shuuichi's self-appointed guide.
He cannot for the life of him put his finger on what it is, however, and so in the blink of an eye everything becomes suspicious.
The way he walks— just a tad too heavy, and while the kimono he's wearing obediently shifts and folds with each step, there's still something to it that has Shuuichi on edge.
Then there's the way he speaks: minutely slower than usual, as if he needed even more time to formulate his answers than he already does.
And again the way he looks at Shuuichi— eyes a bit too fixed, a bit too hungry, even for a great hunter. It makes the hairs at the back of Shuuichi's neck stand up and has his instincts going haywire: go invisible, they chant, as alluring as a siren's call. Vanish while you still can. He's able to ignore them for the most part, though. Being afraid of the Nekomata on a base animal level is hardly news to him, after all: he can't help it, just as Ryo can't help but wish to tear him apart, deep down underneath layers upon layers of iron-clad discipline and self-control.
But the thing is... Shuuichi doesn't recall being stared at quite this intensely before, and most certainly never for so long without interruption. And so this, too, goes into the ever-growing pile of things that feel off about Ryo.
The Nekomata's ears twitch as he adjusts his haori, then lazily bend forward. Shuuichi feels Ryo's shoulder delicately brush against his, the power his guide's body brims with crackling in tiny sparks all around the point of contact. He wonders, idly, if this is yet another custom among Yokai that he wasn't aware of.
"You're so quiet today, Tabibito-san," says Kei. His eyes, Shuuichi notes, are glittering much like one of his namesakes. He doesn't think they've ever done that before.
Rather than voicing any of his suspicions, Shuuichi shoots back, "I thought silent company was what you most appreciated, Nekomata-san." He turns partially as he speaks, hoping to get a better look at the Yokai's features, but Ryo is quick to take the reins and angle himself so that he's the one peering back at Shuuichi instead. He has merely moved a half-step ahead, but still that unsettling undercurrent is something Shuuichi can't shake off: it clings to the fur of his ears and crawls icily down his back and stiffens his tail into an uneasy line.
Worst of all, Kei smiles at him in lieu of answering, and Shuuichi sees sharp teeth in the curve of the Nekomata's mouth. Ah, he thinks, so that's how it is. More than a little disheartening, but how could anyone blame a Yokai as powerful and territorial as he knows Ryo to be for having had enough of nigh strangers prancing around his territory?
Still. Whichever instinct the Nekomata has elected to stop repressing, be it to destroy or to devour, is of little consequence: Shuuichi would rather get away with his life in either case. "Perhaps I should—" leave, he doesn't get to finish, because Ryo is right in his face all of a sudden, eyes half-lidded and that ever-growing, fanged smile stretching across his features.
"You can be quite silly sometimes," the Nekomata cuts him off for good when he tries to speak up again. His eyes shine like rubies in the waning daylight, and that's... that's... "Whatever gave you the impression that I'd want you to leave?"
Shuuichi swallows, then takes a step back. Sure enough, Kei follows suit with an inquisitive hum; the decorative beads woven into the fastening of the Yokai's haori clink together, and Shuuichi's traitorous ears flicker, betraying his agitation. He opens his mouth to reply, but Kei is faster: he brings a finger to his lips, and just like that Shuuichi's voice is gone— he's staring into the Nekomata's eyes, a bit hazy on what he's looking for but determined to find it in the swirling crimson. So determined, in fact, that he fails to register how Ryo's hand has moved again, lightning quick, and is now hovering near the neatly folded collar of his shirt, because he's so, so close to figuring out why his guide feels so—
Wrong.
"Oh, dear. It looks like we got interrupted." Ryo— not Ryo, this is so wrong— smiles wider. Confident— not confident: arrogant. Nothing like the Nekomata he met when he first stepped foot on Nihon's shores.
And then behind him, that exact same voice, only vaguely tinged with exasperation this time around. "Tabibito-san, what did I tell you about cats with one tail?"
To his credit, Shuuichi doesn't yelp. In fact, he needn't make a sound at all when he can embarrass himself just fine by briefly flickering out of existence from shock instead. He hears the imposter laugh, even that sound ever-so-slightly distorted and wrong, but then something cracks next to his head and the laughter turns into a piercing, agonized yowl. When he glances to the left, he gets why: Ryo may or may not have crushed the stranger's wrist with a single hand. Hm.
"Let go," they spit, which is about the time Shuuichi remembers how to move and steps away from between the two Yokai. In doing so, his eyes fall to the imposter's shadow, long and dark thanks to the setting sun, and he thinks that maybe that's why the stranger had meticulously kept themself up close and ahead of Shuuichi, always with the sunlight glaring straight at them: the silhouette they project on the ground writhes as if in pain, deformed and entirely too black to be anything but a door to the void itself. Most notably, it bears no resemblance whatsoever to Ryo's own shadow.
For his part, the Nekomata obliges with a flick of the wrist. The motion clearly aggravates whatever injury he inflicted on the imposter, who grits their teeth before taking a few steps back, melting into the last dregs of sunset-cast shade and disappearing altogether. That leaves Shuuichi alone with Ryo, and the Yokai wastes no time approaching him with the same air of barely contained exasperation as when he showed up unannounced.
"Did you not listen to a single word I said two nights ago?" Ryo huffs, meeting Shuuichi's confused gaze with a painfully knowing look. "Beware of Bakeneko, the one-tailed tricksters. I told you that."
Shuuichi, who most definitely cannot say 'I actually missed most of your explanations because I'd come down with a severe case of staring at your mouth', lets out a vaguely apologetic noise instead, because it's still infinitely better than telling the truth, and then he allows the Nekomata to run whatever inspection of his person he deems necessary. He doesn't feel any different than usual, which hopefully means he didn't get cursed or whatever it is that Bakeneko do to their prey, but he supposes one can never be too sure.
Kei's fingers reach Shuuichi's chin, gingerly tilting his head this and that way to check for... something, probably. "Did they manage to touch you?" he inquires. Shuuichi eventually shakes his head, albeit with a little difficulty, and the Nekomata's shoulders sag minutely. "Very well, then. I'll accompany you back to your settlement."
"Why?" Shuuichi tilts his head, although he easily falls into step next to Ryo when the other starts walking anyway. "I know the way, Kei-san."
The Yokai tsks. "That Bakeneko... Do you really think they've given up?"
"Ah. I suppose not."
He's not even sure why he'd want to protest the solution, really. Everything is back to normal, now. Ryo's steps, featherlight as they should be, the shifting of his kimono, his every word's measured cadence, the careful distance between them. And his eyes, dark on dark, steady blue. If Shuuichi were any less in control of himself, he'd probably start floating and flickering in and out of sight; as it is, he merely feels his body betraying him in the only other way it knows how— a deep, rumbling, mortifying purr, which he futilely hopes Kei won't notice amongst the mild chaos of the nightlife concert they're passing through.
As if on cue, the Nekomata tilts his head in Shuuichi's direction. "Tabibito-san, are you—"
"No," Shuuichi lies, as smooth as butter, and then imagines a kick hitting him square in the face. Or, better yet, one of Jodie's throwing knives.
Ryo blinks at him. One, two, three times, so very slow. And then he laughs— just an expertly simulated coughing fit, really, coupled with the barest hint of a wheeze in-between breaths. It's embarrassing and also the best thing Shuuichi has witnessed all week.
That's what he's bringing back tonight, he decides.

Giving you Akai / DetCo for the fandom ask game. 5, 7, 10, 11 (akam). As many of those as you feel like answering. <3
Hehe, hi, thank you @dracrownian for the ask <3 Usually I get asks about Rei but I guess today is the day to flex my love for Akai 🚬❤️🔥
Long answers below the cut, you know the drill, I can't be concise.
5. Out of all your fanworks that include Akai, which is your favourite?
This is a very easy question for once! I'm going to go with one that is specifically about Akai, and it's Triple Kill. I'm very proud of how that one came out, especially the visit of Akemi's grave with Shiho. I think I managed to strike a good balance between introspection and character development. Also, it is a gentle 'fuck you' to the notion that Akai is a lone wolf. People care about him...
I don't know what the fuck I was on, but dear god do I wish I could step back into that mindset. Akai is difficult to write most of the time, because he doesn't talk much, but it just worked, that once.
It's the ghost I chase in warm summer nights.
7. Is there a piece of clothing you think Akai is particularly fond of/that you imagine them wearing a lot or like to draw them in?
The easy, obvious answer of course is his beanie. It's hard to imagine him without it, it's even downright weird to see him without it. But that's the cheap answer too, so I'll give you a bit more.
Akai is, unfortunately, the quintessential cool guy. He's the ideal of how I would dress if I was somewhat more confident in my appearance. Therefore, if I were to draw him, I'd love to draw him in all his badass glory (mostly in all black and in his cool leather jackets and that one raincoat he ran around in as Rye). Thankfully, I don't draw much, so I don't have to figure out how to make several different shades of black clothing look interesting <3
And then, of course, when it comes to clothing there's the elephant in the room: that fucking sweater. You know the one. The cream turtleneck. The fact Akai possesses such an article of clothing has bamboozled me into writing 45k words and counting, and I still haven't arrived at a good answer for why the hell he has one in canon. Not that it doesn't suit him, I think he looks lovely in it, but one just really has to wonder, what with the rest of his wardrobe being. Mostly black.
It's just one of the many curiosities that make me interested in Akai, and that makes me want to explore what is going on in his pretty head. I can only hope he has that sweater for good reason, and that he is fond of it. In my heart, this is true.
10. What is your favourite piece of fanart for Akai?
Akai grew on me slowly and gently, and as such, I don't really have that much art of him in my head that really left an impression. However, I will take this as an opportunity to put my lovely friend @fizzyjacuzzi on blast <3
We've got Akai death day, cute ShuuRei, funny Okiamu, ShuuRei so soft it makes me want to cry, the one where I continue to ignore word of god and believe they have their happy ending, and scotchrye sniping.
As a double-whammy, here's Jac's comic of Murder is a State of Mind, which is a delightful fic by the lovely @floofiestboy. (Ha, floof, I bet you thought you could get off easy if I'm putting Jac on blast, but not today <3)
And also, because I want everybody else to go insane too, Jac's take on the tea party that haunts me to this day (only good people die young. and we aren't. I'm going to commit unspeakable atrocities in Jac's name). And then whenever I talk about Jac's art I also have to bring up the fucking whiskey shot glass. It's really more of a whiskey trio or Rei thing, but Rye is in there and I swear to got every time I see this art I go a little bit insane.
Further delightful art is @kuschelkissen's Reitatouille, as well as Rye with the least intimidating sunglasses ever. What a cutie <3
11. What's your favourite piece of fanart for AkAm?
I'm a little unsure whether fanart refers to art or writing. If the latter counts as well, I would like to just lock in all of floof's fics.
If it's art-art, aside from the AkAm pieces from Jac that I already highlighted in the previous section, I really really love 2y's AkAm, in particular this log. I loved it so much I made a pixiv account without speaking a single word of Japanese. Oops.
There's also this doujin about the time after Akai faked his death with Rei going off the deep end in his investigation that holds me in a vice grip. When I went to Japan, I was lucky enough to run into a physical copy in a second hand store in Akihabara, and I swear to you, I almost cried XD
Suffice it to say...I am unfortunately down bad for them. And that includes Akai Shuuichi as well <3
#thank you for the ask PT#I'm a Rei girlie but I promise I love Akai too#especially once I got to see his sillier side too...okiya is such a silly little creature#oh dear that's a lot of links I hope I didn't screw that up#akai shuuichi#akam#obligatory akam tag#iris answers#dracrownian

How to Snipe
Akai x fem!reader
Navi.
Warnings: undercover agent/spy!reader, based on a scene in a dream I had
Notes: finally posting this 😭
Potentially a series potentially just a one shot, we'll see how I feel ☺️
His file was classified and his documents were blacked, only a few filler words could be seen. Rye was infamous in this line of work. Well, mostly under the name of Akai Shuichi, but the point stood regardless.
Access to his file was hard to get, but you didn't even need it (though you had gotten a quick glance at it before). You knew him very well already. Well enough, actually, to recognise certain mannerisms in a man that often appeared alongside your target. The first day you saw him, you spent your night researching a certain "Subaru Okiya". He was an attractive young man and his professors - while he did not attend all lectures (though they had assured you that this was very normal) - described him as kind, considerate and knowledgeable. You didn't doubt that, however, his grades where just a little too good for his attendance, his image a little bit too perfect for a mere university student barely to be fiund on campus.
Now, you were not one to slack off. So, after quenching your initial curiosity, you turned back to the task at hand. Acquiring a certain...something from the Mōri hausehold.
And that is how you got here, looking through a room with neatly stacked papers on an organised desk, a bed with rose-coloured sheets and plushies perched on it and lastly the karate uniform hung against the mirror of a wardrobe.
You only had a few minutes. You could basically see them rushing through the streets and chuckled at the thought. That detective boy was far more obvious than he thought.
You found the hard drive nestled into one of the plushies - one that had no doubt been won on a fair once. Carefully, as not to rip the fabric, you peeled out the object - just in time it seemed. You opened the window the moment the entrance gate was unlocked and landed on the ground as you heard them wrench open the bedroom door.
You could see him out of the corner of your eye, fighting his way through the masses of workworn employers on their way home, but you payed him no mind. Quickly, you turned to the left and hurried to get into the evening rush.
He managed to follow you for quite some time, you gave him that. It seemed he was known as talented and infamous for a reason.
But, so were you. After ten minutes he had lost your trail, however, you had already decided to let him see you again soon enough. Who would have guessed enrolling into University would be so enticing?
