ok listen i have a pathological obsession with alec and have spent an almost absurd amount of time studying him like im going to be paid for it. so i feel highly qualified to say that your cosplay mannerisms were awesome and fun and felt true to the character and even if there is room for improvement you should still give yourself a hand for how good it was !!

i will say re alec mannerisms. he by default comes off like you said, as a sloppy disaffected teenage boy. little overly lax, at times way more casual looking than many people would be when geared up for a fight in costume. but he also Is textually fairly feminine when he's being regent. he's fairly regularly described as feminine, and at one point during behemoth fight a ward decides he's feminine enough to make a homophobic insult at. and the main contributing factor to people in 2011 deciding that a certain teenage boy Seems Gay is, aside from his poofy shirt and tights, probably going to be his general mannerisms and the way he carries himself as regent. he can be theatric and silly, and he repeatedly demonstrates a complete lack of concern with achieving any masculinity whatsoever. so in interpreting him i Would actually suggest being fine with or incorporating femininity, and id also keep in mind that if he does grace it's often going to be as a gag or a role he's briefly playing up before going back to lazyboy mode. there's my 2 cents if you want them

i would also say that. not wanting to fall or step onto protruding nails is a pretty good excuse for being stiff. it's method acting in that alec would also not want to step or fall on protruding nails 👍

and re your hypothesis yes it's precisely that :) there's several angles for interpreting his power but the most like. Fundamental, core level of it. is that it's the power of a boy who grew up with a childhood so terrible his primary coping mechanism was to need to get the fuck out of his own body. he gets more present once aisha shows up and he's got a friend to engage with, but pretty much every time taylor narrates that alec seems weirdly disaffected, disinterested, or lazy, it's because he's depressed or dissociating. his default mode is disengaging from himself, especially for anything stressful, because doing it is how he survived his childhood. it's how he manages to Stay So Sillay in situations where everyone else is horrified

@lakesbian I wanted to convey the laxity, sloppy movements, and, at the same time, grace without going into femininity. But so far, I have not managed to do this mix as I intended. Some of the movements are too stiff. Part of the problem was the need to balance in a mask with limited visibility on a burnt fallen beam with protruding nails, with the possibility of falling on the same ones lying nearby. But is this an excuse? I need to practice more.

In my opinion, Alec and Taylor have the most difficult movement patterns to display of all the Undersiders. At the same time, their manner of movement is complex in different ways.

Taylor's movements are angular, strange, and look a little inhuman at certain moments (as the author describes it). At the same time, you have to very carefully balance on the edge and not slide into complete creepiness.

So it is difficult (difficult in different ways) to show the manner Regent and Skitter movement, but also very interesting.

P.S. About cigarettes

This is a direct illustration of a line from the song: "I like the look of a cigarette, but I hate the way it tastes." This is very much in Regent's spirit: a kind of posing, without real enjoyment of what you are doing.

I think there's a lot about this song ("Drama" by Spencer Sutherland) that suits Alec:

I see it as an attempt to feel something inside himself. I suspect that Alec may have dissociation (also possibly derealization/depersonalization) due to traumatic events since childhood, and the nature of his superpower further raises the possibility of this hypothesis.

to be honest with you i don't think alec does those things at all. when alec is at what seems to be his mental health low in worm he's depressed, quiet, and withdrawn. his outburst towards sophia is violent obviously, but not at all the same thing as self-sabotaging his personal relationships. rather, alec's approach to interpersonal relationships is clearly characterized by immense loneliness and genuine attempts to form friendships--we see him constantly trying to make friendly jokes or connections with taylor at the start of worm (which fails simply because they have incompatible personalities and he's poor at understanding why he's bouncing off her), and he does the same once aisha joins the team, talking to her in a playful/friendly way and taking initiative to invite her over to watch movies while the television is out elsewhere. his bad behavior and button pressing of taylor and brian after this isn't a trauma response*--it's the natural outcome of a younger teenager hanging out with a second younger teenager and being silly together while rebelling against older teens who seem intent on scolding them no matter what they do.

*we do know from a convo between brian and taylor right before she leaves that alec does have the occasional trauma response to being nagged by brian about his friendship with aisha, but it's in the form of making himself disaffected and annoying to talk to, which is not relevant to the majority of his interactions with brian or this post

in fact, not only is alec not even remotely trying to scare people off, i don't think he's even looking for conflict in general. he continuously takes a backseat in the decision making of the team's dynamics. one of his more evident traits is that he lets everyone else decide what to do because he's aware he can't necessarily be trusted to make the decisions + is largely fine and satisfied with just going around doing whatever insane shit they're getting up to today, especially when it makes him feel more successful/powerful afterwards. overall "self-sabotaging and being socially offputting to feel in control" is just not the direction of his trauma response

this song is about feeling yourself spin out of control with entitlement-- or at least, within a world that tells you you're acting entitled. the spelling of the title "tic" is a clear reference to the symptom of neurological disorders such as tourette's syndrome (involuntary or semi-voluntary movements or vocalizations are called tics), and the lyrics can be interpreted as being about society's reaction to people with disabilities; within the context of alec's story and characterization, i would reinterpret this to be about his trauma responses. he's constantly "bearing down," keysmashing people's buttons to provoke reactions, even when that is detrimental to his relationships. this self-sabotaging streak is a way to prevent himself from forming loving relationships; alec is constantly seeking conflict in an attempt to feel something and also because he needs to feel in control of the bad things that happen to him.

I think alec stopped screaming "i am not an animal" years ago and now he is screaming "i am an animal!" just to scare people off

basically alec doesnt think he deserves a gold star for not killing because he has no idea what hes doing. ever. at any point in time. he thinks he has 0 opinion on killing. he has no idea that he doesn't want to kill. his sole mental barrier between him and killing has the tensile strength of a single strand of human hair. he has no idea what his moral stances are. he has them, he just doesn't know he has them. him trying to figure out how he feels about literally anything more complicated than "what's my favorite flavor of ice cream" or "do i feel like watching a movie tonight" is like someone who's never seen a cloud before trying to read a meteorological chart on live tv. he literally unironically fully genuinely is not sure if there are circumstances where torture is okay or not. there's so much wrong with him it reaches the point of being comically unbelievable. however oblivious you think he is he's worse. he doesn't want a gold star for not killing because he's both unaware that he wants a gold star and unaware that killing is bad. I love him.

i do not have a conclusive answer to the ask about what the worst possible ship for alec is, more testing must be done, but it has made me realize that you could do very funny things to alec's brain by introducing another extremely fancy gnc boy his age to his environment. he would morph into one of those anime villains talking about how they hate but also begrudgingly respect the protagonist in a homoerotic manner. he would want that other boy dead but beneath that would be an intense desire 2 kiss him but beneath That would be an even more intense desire to genuinely see him dead for stealing his schtick. i don't think that's actually his taste in boys though. his taste in girls is "funny mean girls with interesting fashion" but i think his taste in boys is like. Annoying generic highschool class clowns. Like he has such extremely bad taste in boys that if he was normal and went to highschool every single boy he would have a crush on would be straight. hang on i just realized what the worst possible ship is
