easy explaination of why most if not all the characters have ended up flanderized in FEH: it started as a gacha game for FE fans and now is a FE game for gacha fans. That's why Alphonse won over Sigurd or why Gullveig won last year's cyl with only 2 lines of dialogue too.

This is why I don't want the jugdral remakes to happen, bc look at engage, using FEH's mechanic and FEH using its ring mechanic in order to sell more lyn, camilla and marth alts. I don't want jugdral to end up with another silly gimmick that isn't necessary on the game or the story but can be sold as another gatcha powercreep thingy. As long as FEH is on service, the main franchise is going to be directyl affected by it.

But... yeah, with time, FEH became its own thing and is apparently even considered a main FE Title given how Vero was added, albeit through a DLC, to Engage and I mean -

If Vero's writing is supposed to represent FEH, I have to inform you I found my new least liked FE game lol - which brings the main question : what is an FE game?

TBH, to me, FEH OCs are barely characters (Vero needed heavy retcons and ignoring elephants in the room which were there since book 1 to become remotely close to one) which makes me completely baffled at how they can even be "picked" for events like CYL, but if we are talking about popularity contests, then people will vote for their faves... aka the most recent characters they like or have seen - sure it doesn't help that Siggy'n'Leif are from jp only games, but CYL1 saw Roy being picked, even when his Smash Bros popularity dwindled. Can you imagine, in 2024 if Roy wasn't picked for CYL1, him competing with the non-entity that is Alfonse as "the most beloved FE characters voted in by the fans?".

I mean, I can get liking OCs in gacha/crossover games (I'm not pointing at someone in particular about Crestoria lol even if i prefered kanana to vicious) but I can bet you 2 kebabs that if a Tales gacha organised the equivalent of CYL, Leon and Yuri would be picked before any Male OC, and I'd bet 1 kebab about Alicia or even Milla being added before the Kanonos.

In FEH, Book 2 Vero (or was it 3?) was picked over... Elincia. Recency bias is a thing but... yep, it has been a long time now since FEH stopped being a gacha game for fans of FE, but became its own thing with sometimes FE characters being referenced.

I agree with your last remark though, as long as FEH exists, evil will - I mean, as long as FEH exists, it will have some sort of influence in the main games - even if I reiterate, FE15 managed to dodge its influence, only to fall in some other pitfalls.

Jugdral remakes can play like SoV, "additional" characters will be in a DLC and not have any relevance to the story, I mean, even if you can roll for Sharena on a NG+, she might not even have one line.

But, tbh, it's not the gacha aspects that worry me the most about Jugdral remakes, it's the state of the franchise/fandom post FE15 and especially post FE16, but I'll make a separate post about it.

i've had a headcanon since forever that (feh) alphonse does not care for summoner/canon character relationships at all.

(i think it was his lvl40 quote where you get a hint he was in such a relationship?? friendship? with a summoned hero and it went badly or something? idk there was definitely A Line.)

and the interesting thing is - i totally get where he's coming from. there's a reason most major corporations don't allow married bosses & employees because of the power differential, right - if you get married somebody has to resign or to a different department.

and me being me i am all over the crazy implications of 'you the summoner force all your summoned heroes to sign a contract where they have to fight for you despite what they wish'. (eg why outright villains like fomortis and ashnard don't immediately shank you)

okay, so, the more I think about it, the less surprised I am about this year's CYL results?

so, like everyone else, I was expecting an engage sweep. yunaka and ivy/alear for the girls, and diamant and alear/alcryst for the boys. as everyone knows by now, that REALLY didn't happen. in fact, the only real contender was yunaka.

why was that the case? well, I have a few theories, which I'm read-more zoning because this post has gotten LONG

partially, I think this is caused by the year gap between engage's release and CYL 8. speaking as someone who's been hardcore into FE since awakening and has gone back to play all of the older games I could, I played engage, had mixed feelings, and then forgot about it.

... aaaaaand so did everyone else. yes, engage does have a fanbase, but compared to three houses and even fates/awakening... it's tiny!

I think there's a few reasons for this. firstly, there's the lack of shipping mechanics, which means it's less appealing to romance fans (which is a huge amount of people active in fanbases, and therefore voting for things like CYL).

secondly, the game is deliberately designed around dropping older units in favour of using your newest recruits, which means people are unlocking less supports, and are therefore less invested in the characters.

engage also lacks replay value due to said absence of romance mechanics and the difficulty of reclassing characters, which is another thing preventing people from actually unlocking the supports, and therefore caring about the cast.

truthfully, most of the people seriously invested in engage probably aren't active in a fandom sense, since they're playing it exclusively for the gameplay (and therefore aren't going to vote for it in things like CYL).

still, I don't think that's the only reason engage didn't win. for one, there's definitely botting - bernie winning isn't surprising, but by that much?? yeah, no.

I think that the engage vote being split - especially amongst the men's division - really didn't help. all of the three houses fans rallied behind felix and bernie, who have been consistently third place for years. meanwhile, you've got several serious candidates for both male and female engage characters, splitting the vote multiple ways - if all of the ivy voters had voted for yunaka instead, she would have easily scored second place.

alphonse and robin are a bit more surprising to me, but robin is the only major awakening character without a brave unit yet, and FEH characters historically do well. I also think the fans wanted to give intsys a message that OG alphonse/shareena/anna reeeeeally need an update.

for me, I believe the final factor in the engage loss of CLY8 is that... everyone thought they were a shoe in! everyone thought at bare minimum, yunaka and diamant were shoe ins, so why not vote for your fav minor character you'd like an alt for instead?

I think all of these factors combined is why engage did so poorly. now, do I think that this means we're never going to get any engage brave units? nah. with felix/bernie out of the pool, the three houses votes are going to be fractured between hilda, byleth, yuri, and the shezzes. truthfully, unless the rumoured genealogy remake drops between now and the next CYL, I'm very much expecting brave diamant and yunaka next year!

so, it's not all doom-and-gloom for engage fans, even if things didn't go their way this year

i hope you pat yourself on the back often for getting out of feh when you did. i finally got my boy laurent, but ya know what it cost? book 8 free oc is just basically felicia but if she was a squirrel girl. :/ book 8 isn't gonna have to try too hard to be better than 7 was, but the bar is. SO low. h e l p.

Okay fun fact, my wife redownloaded the game recently, saying she just wanted to see what was going on. She played like two, maybe three days, and didn’t even get past like book 4. We didn’t even catch up to the stuff since we left around Veronica’s sister. And the entire time she kept being like “I hope this doesn’t make you want to come back to the game,” and it’s like…wife. Impossible. That game burnt me out so hard I literally can’t even think about it existing without getting mad. I could not possibly return. I think about it for 0.03 seconds and go “yeah but do you really want to play any of the modes?” And I don’t. I do viscerally do not.

I heard last book was bad, but I’ve heard the same of every book since forever so nothing new there. What happened? I’m not even sure what the plot was, but I heard they finally dropped the pretense and now all the lady OCs are arguing over who Alphonse is gonna put a baby in.

It’s like, I get people pointing out the new character for each book is a girl without fail but I fuckin’ side-eye the people who go “if it’s a guy they’re a CHARACTER and if it’s a girl they’re just a waifu.” Like, the only thing we know about buff masked dude is that he is a buff dude, so the people already acting like he’s soooooooo much more interesting than Ratotoskr and her sisters are telling on themselves a bit.

My personal view is men can have rights in FEH the minute the writers stop going “okay, two lines each is about enough time for Anna and Sharena, back to Alphonse being the only one who does anything,” and not a second sooner. Since that won’t happen, girl power has to compensate somewhere.

Why do I see so many people being so mean about the new FEH OC ladies? A lot of people seem to be thirsting over that new guy that we see in the background of the Book VIII art even though we don't see him in the trailer so I assume it's nothing to do with Book VIII itself. I don't understand the disconnect between disliking the girl characters but really liking that guy.

Strawberries and Champagne Kisses

This month’s fic is my half of an art trade with the lovely @avistella!  I know it took a little bit longer for me to produce (rl has been hitting me hard lately so I’m behind on literally all of my projects) so I hope you don't mind the wait!

Genre: Fluff and smut~ Alice and Alphonse share a beautiful moment under the stars and express how much they mean to one another. 

The blanket beneath Alice’s folded knees was covered with the scattered crumbs of the remains of her picnic with Alphonse.  She quickly brushed them away into the soft grass, her nails snagging on a loose thread or two.  The sun had barely set, and the sky was a beautiful tapestry of oranges and cherry-reds.  A pleasant breeze was blowing through her hair, and she smelled the faint scent of wildflowers.

Alphonse sat beside her and poured the last of their champagne into Alice’s flute.  He had surprised her by taking her on an impromptu hike away from their base camp earlier in the day.  He and the summoner had been running themselves ragged looking after the newly summoned heroes, and they both were in desperate need of a break.   Feeling spontaneous, Alphonse led her to a flowering wisteria tree on the slopes of a quiet riverbank.  He had insisted that she wear a blindfold for the entire hike, promising her that something sweet awaited her at the end.  Although Alice was more than a little afraid of tripping, she trusted Alphonse to guide her down the right path.

“I hope you like this,” he murmured when taking off her blindfold. “It’s not much, but I wanted to do something to show you how much I care about you.”

 The picnic itself was just as sweet as he was.  They dined on homemade sandwiches, sweet cookies from the local market, and Alphonse had personally picked the best berries and chocolate for their dessert.  It had turned out to be a wonderful evening.

Alice sipped her champagne and looked over at Alphonse.  Despite all the effort he had put into their picnic, his food was largely untouched.  “Is something wrong…?” she asked, suddenly feeling guilty for eating as much as she did.  “Did you not like the sandwiches?”

He appeared not to hear her at first, taking a moment to tear his gaze away from her face and blinking.  Alphonse looked down at his food, almost surprised to see it was still there.  “Oh,” he said, his cheeks turning pink.  “I think I forgot about it.”

“Eh??” Alice let out a champagne tinted bubble of laughter.  “How could you have forgotten about the food you made?”

“Well, it’s easy to forget something as unimportant as that when I’m spending the evening with someone as beautiful as you are.”

His comment stopped her laughter in her throat, and it was her turn for her cheeks to turn pink.  “O-oh,” she said.  Compliments always made Alice turn into a blushing mess, especially ones coming from the Askran Prince.  It didn’t seem to matter how many he gave her, or how long they had been a couple, she was always red from his sweet words. She turned her gaze away, her fingers gripping her champagne flute.  

“Hey,” Alphonse’s hand suddenly caught the summoner’s cheek, holding her gaze with his piercing eyes.  “You don’t have to feel embarrassed. You truly are beautiful, Alice.  Whenever I’m with you you’re the only thing I see.  It’s like everything else just fades to black.”

She was blushing furiously now.  Alice did the only thing she could think of and shoved a strawberry into his mouth. 

The blue-haired prince chuckled at her flustered response but nonetheless ate the strawberry in question. Seeing Alice like this was truly a blessing from Naga herself.  To Alphonse, Alice’s face seemed to get more beautiful by the moment.  He reached into the picnic basket and pulled out a strawberry of his own, planting it upon her sweet lips.  “Here,” Alphonse said, letting the fruit barely graze her tongue.  “Something sweet for my sweet.”

 Feeling the love of her life’s fingers brush against lips made her heart soar.  The strawberry was delicious, and it mixed perfectly with the dark chocolate it was dipped in.  She ate it gratefully, her tongue barely flicking along the pad of his thumb. 

The pink in Alphonse’s cheeks deepened, and he let his touch linger on her full bottom lip.  Her skin was so soft, and if he kissed her he was certain that she would taste like champagne and strawberries.  “Alice…” he said her name like a caress and leaned forward.  “I want-”

His words were left unsaid as she leaned forward herself, pressing her lips to his.  The kiss made his eyes widen in surprise, but Alphone kissed her back fiercely.  He was partially right, she tasted even better than strawberries and champagne.  

Feeling bold because of the alcohol, Alice slid one hand around Alphonse’s neck and moved closer, her knee meeting his.  She continued to kiss him, pushing her body near his until she was practically sitting in his lap.  She didn’t realize how much the alcohol had affected her until she pulled away for a gasp of air and noticed her position.   “I-I-”

Alphonse, sensing her embarrassment, slid his arm around her waist and kissed her forehead.  “I like it when you kiss me like that,” he murmured.  “It’s nice knowing that you want me as much as I want you.” 

“Of course I want you,” she whispered.  Alice raised her hand to stroke the line of his jaw.  Alphonse’s beauty was positively ethereal in the soft glow of twilight.  “Alphonse, I love you... “

He took her hand and planted a kiss on her finger.  One day he would put a ring on her finger to symbolize how much he loved her, and how much he needed her in his life.  But for now, he would have to settle for telling her in the best way he could.  “I love you too, Alice.  Every day I’m with you is a gift from Naga herself.”

Alice kissed him with all the passion and love she could, letting her body say what her words could not.  Her cheeks felt hot, and she locked her arms around Alphonse’s neck.  He smelled warm and wonderful, and being so close to him was enough to make her heart pound.  An ache began to form between her thighs, and she pressed herself closer to his hips to get some small amount of release.  “Alphonse..” she mumbled, her cheeks seeming to grow hotter.  “I want…”

It did not take him long to understand just what it was she wanted from him.  Alphonse pushed off the summoner's cloak with fervor, his hands brushing along the sensitive nerves at her collarbones.  His fingertips were soft, and Alice acted on impulse and grabbed one of his hands, bringing it to her mouth once more.  She coyly kissed the tip of his longest digit, letting it rest flush on her lower lip.  Her other hand tugged at his clothes, pulling them from his shoulders in a flurry. 

He chuckled once and slid the finger into her mouth.  He tasted like chocolate-covered strawberries, and she sucked on him greedily.  She lifted her hips off of his and gently tugged at his pants and underclothes, freeing the already hard prince.  The champagne had made Alice feel bolder than she ever had before, and she was enjoying this newfound power she had over her love.  

 She tried pushing him back onto the blanket beneath them, but he caught her by surprise with a passionate kiss. He tugged the shorts she wore underneath her dress to her knees, and she kicked them off all the way.  After she was free, Alice leaned up to kiss Alphonse deeply, wrapping her hand around his hardened cock.  He gasped against her lips, the touch of her soft fingers already enough to send a rush of pleasure through his veins.  He ground his hips into her hand and pushed her dress over her waist, his hands frantic with need.

He chuckled softly and pressed his lips to her forehead.  “I was thinking the same thing about you, my dear summoner.”

Some commentary on the most recent Fire Emblem Heroes story piece.

The flowers that are Sharena's favorite flowers... Líf coming here and telling Eir that she would be better off forgetting... And the introduction of the idea that there are multiple Askr's.

So I had my wife pull up a pic of Líf and one of Alphonse, and... Their bangs, and hair are the same. Yes, Líf's is grayed out, but so is the rest of him. The eyes come from being under Hel's control...

But I remembered the beginning trailer, where they introduced characters, when everyone thought Sharena was gonna die. What if...

What if Líf lied about who he was, and IS AN ALTERNATE ALPHONSE??? And his sister, Sharena is dead, and so he's leaving flowers for her? Like... Oof...
