the next chapter ship talk (so far)

have i told you guys i already ship vikram and connor because they held hands in the sneak peek and lysa responded to this by rolling her eyes and saying "great, a bromance is forming." their shipname is Viknor and i have already made them a playlist I have other reasons to ship them as well - and I'm also not alone in being excited for their dynamic specifically. The entire audience at ElectricCon gasped out loud when they held hands and seemed to get along so well off the bat.

Because if you're familiar with Electric Entertainment shows like everyone in that audience was, you know they have tropes that repeat across their shows. One of those major tropes is that the two main male characters don't get along at first, and then pretend not to get along even when they become so close they would die for each other. They put on the whole bicker like an old married couple routine. (Jake and Ezekiel, Eliot and Hardison, Garrett and Janzo.) So the entire audience gasped and screeched when Vikram and Connor held hands for a prolonged period of time and smiled like giddy idiots the whole time and then proceeded to seem to get along well in the rest of the trailer because this is flipping the usual Electric Entertainment formula on it's head. Connor and Vikram aren't going to pretend to dislike each other out of some sense of pride, that isn't their characters. And on the flipside, Lysa and Charlie as the two main female characters seem to be the more standoffish and emotionally distant characters, because of respective traumas. (Lysa losing her parents at a young age and Charlie being rejected from the Library once before. This is her last chance to prove herself. Yes I also already ship Lysa/Charlie as well they are called Charlysa.)

They seem to gravitate to each other instantly, which makes sense when you consider the context of their characters and where they each are in their lives. Connor was a historian who was thrown out of academia for believing in magic and the library's existence, and it's implied his family and the rest of society thinks he's crazy. He's been reduced to being a thief by night and a conspiracy theory content creator by day. (He was literally livestreaming himself breaking into the castle ruins lmfao we have our first youtuber librarian its great) Then here comes Vikram, bursting into Connor's life and bringing the truth about magic and the Library being real with him. He literally bursts into Connor's life at his lowest, loneliest point and gives him all the answers and validation that he isn't crazy that he's ever wanted. (The way Connor and Lysa meet Vikram honestly reminded me of how Eve meets Flynn.) Meanwhile, from Vikram's perspective, he is suddenly stranded in the far future alone and everyone he's ever known is dead and gone. He's told he's not allowed to return so he's now doomed to be a fish out of water in a world where he doesn't belong for the rest of his life, never to see his loved ones again. So far, Charlie seems annoyed with his refusal to listen to her so far from what we've seen, and Lysa is emotionally standoffish and upset that she's even having to deal with magic because she hates the unknown and unpredictable. Of course we already know they will all soften and warm up to each other and become attached to each other, but it's pretty obvious that Connor is the first real true friend that will be easy to talk to that Vikram has in this new time. So, all that considered, it's not surprising they get along so well so quickly they're literally holding hands like they're about to skip off together in the first few episodes.

(this post is just me talking about which character dynamics interest me the most therefore what i'm most excited to ship both platonically and romantically, not saying I think they are going to make it canon. i enjoy shipping regardless of canon, although these two dynamics being canon would make me happy, but i can also see other variations between this group becoming a thing)

What's the origin of your blog's title? @lvsifer and I were talking about a certain Middle-Earth cookbook with some truly funky recipes, unfortunately there were none for Mairon so we were like... What would he eat? He would definitely be into eating raw meat. Mettbrötchen are a German specialty, basically a bread roll with butter and minced raw pork (yes, you heard that right), preferably with pepper and red onions. So Mairon's Mettbrötchen was born - doesn't it just fuck phonetically?

Favorite Fandoms: The Silm fandom 🖤 I have never been truly active in any other fandom.

OTP(s) + shipname: Angbang (Mairon/Melkor). Most other ships I love/like are fucked up in a way that makes OTP sound wrong to describe them (not that an OTP can't have a fucked up dynamic of course!).

If you work, what's your profession? I'm a linguist specializing in language change, particularly grammatical change. I don't currently work in that field though; I work at a technical university in event management and student recruiting.

I’d love to be a professional oil painter or comic artist, but art is my passion so I don’t know that I’d want to do that professionally :,) I think a career in academia might be interesting, I’d love to study the intersection of civil rights, social activism, and fandom in depth. Work in translation would also be interesting, my goal is to learn five languages in the next 5 years!

beloved [flutters my eyelashes] can i get a rundown of redblues

‘WUVVED!!!!! so flattered you’re interested in them :3

okay SO redblues…….they’re called that because they’re red and blue visual themes (i’m so creative i know). red is qiu qiu, and blue is jiang kuiying. i came up with them on a lark because i was like “okay i like crossdressing women as a plot point but it’s ONLY ever ONE of them crossdressing, what about if they both crossdressed” and then it got out of hand (as it is wont to do with me).

qiu qiu is the firstborn child of prince cang (an imperial relative) and his wife, murong yu. prince cang was cursed to have his firstborn daughter die and be unable to have any further children, so to try and get around this curse, they disguised qiu qiu as their son and raised him as the cang wang-shizi (heir). qiu qiu grew up to be gregarious and a bit (a lot) of a playboy, and generally doesn’t have a care in her life, with her parents being doting and never wanting for anything.

on the other hand, jiang kuiying was the bastard daughter of the baishan jiang’s sect leader by a courtesan, and was treated terribly as a child, ostracised and abused by her immediate family. then one day someone murders everyone in the sect, except for jiang kuiying, who manages to survive because she’d been thrown into a well earlier that day. she winds up taking her half brother—the original heir to the sect’s—name, and travels the jianghu trying to figure out who killed her sect (not because she has any emotional attachment to them, but because she sees that person/people as a threat to her future wellbeing and wants to get rid of them).

the “official plot” is that qiu qiu actually dismisses jiang kuiying the first time she sees her as just another self-possessed show-off after she manages to pace first in a martial alliance competition. jiang of course doesn’t even know of her existence beyond the fact that the alliance is hosted on the lands owned by her family and the knowledge that the heir is a bit infamous as a loud-mouthed flirt. then a few months after the alliance they run into each other again while qiu qiu is traveling and is attacked by bandits and jiang kuiying who was in the area comes to qiu qiu’s rescue, and from then on out qiu qiu is fascinated by this aloof and seemingly emotionless xiake and keeps finding excuses for the two of them to run into each other. at first her fascination is purely academic—anyone who can take out seven bandits without breaking a sweat is worth keeping an eye on—, but eventually when she learns jiang kuiying is a woman it turns romantic. as for jiang kuiying, she figures out qiu qiu is a woman fairly early on—it takes one to know one, after all (and also some bullshit with feeling her pulse). she doesn’t fall as quickly as qiu qiu does, but once she does fall it doesn’t take her long to blandly point out to qiu qiu that she talks a big talk yet she hasn’t even tried to take her to bed in a serious manner. also along the way they break qq’s curse and discover who murdered jiang kuiying’a sect, but that’s kind of secondary to lesbianism.

in terms of personality, jiang kuiying is pretty reserved and aloof, partially because her sect’s main cultivation path was through controlling/suppressing emotion. she can be really funny though! in a deadpan way, usually. qiu qiu is as i mentioned a lot more gregarious, she loves social interaction and enjoying life, and isn’t someone who usually lies. she’s also kind of a freak, though, which means she and jiang kuiying match each other nicely.

What's the origin of your blog's title? This poem by W.H. Auden. "The glacier knocks in the cupboard, / The desert sighs in the bed, / And the crack in the tea-cup opens / A lane to the land of the dead."

Favorite fandoms: Silm!!! I'm not very active anymore, but a few years back when I was active, it was such a vibrant, fun, and welcoming space, and I'll always be grateful for that.

OTP(s) + shipname: Melkor/Mairon, i.e., Angbang. They scratch an itch deep in my psyche. Something about the possessiveness, the blurred boundaries between self and other, the love like a sun-starved scraggly plant clinging on despite the hurt. The yearning. The grief. How there's no words, really, for the enormity of it. Ahem. Anyway.

Favorite color: Black haha—I never really grew out of my teen emo phase.

Favorite game: Most things by FromSoftware really, but Bloodborne was my first and it still has my heart.

Weirdest habit/trait? Ahaha where do I start? I like to scream sometimes. Just one scream, for emotional release purposes. I always wear headphones when I'm out of the house as noise can get overwhleming very quickly. I can't get warm very easily; my partner will be in shorts and a t-shirt, and I'll be shivering under 500 layers.

Hobbies: Writing, reading, video games.

If you work, what's your profession? I'm a therapist, soon to be a qualified psychologist once my doctorate's done.

If you could have any job you wish what would it be? Writer would be my ultimate dream job; however, I have a sneaking suspicion that doing it for work would turn it into an anxiety-filled ordeal. Therapy's the next best thing. I work with severe and enduring difficulties, and sometimes you've got to think outside the box, together with the person, to figure out how to get from A to B (or sometimes if the person even wants to get from A to B or would rather go to C or D instead, or maybe even stay at A). There's something creative about it that really clicks for me.

Something you excel at: I've always been pretty detail-oriented, so stuff like admin, proofreading, etc.

It was funny, I was such a huge nerd that my teacher, who actually specialised in something else but had been saddled with the English class due to staff shortages, let me do a lot of the teaching. Looking back, it was representative of wider issues in my school, but I loved it at the time haha.

Least favorite subject? Maths. My mum was a maths teacher, you see, so there was always a lot of pressure to do well and rows/punishments when I didn't do so well.

What's your best character trait? I try to be understanding. You never really know what might be going on for someone. I'll do my best to hear people out and make things work for everyone where possible.

What's your worst character trait? Ah, I can be secretive and dramatic. Not a good combo when I bottle things up and let them bubble and bubble and bubble, and then it all explodes in a Big Upset.

If you could travel in time who would you like to meet? This is super nerdy, but I'd love to talk to Donald Winnicott (psychoanalyst) because I resonate with his ideas.

mock your own grinning by @jouissants. Just... GAH. Masterful. The prose flows like poetry and creates paintings in my mind. The characterisation is delicious and haunting. It's like a kaleidoscope. Everytime I think of it, everytime I re-read it, I find a new facet to go feral over. It's stayed with me in that special way that stories do when they make you ask questions of the characters and of yourself.

What's the origin of your blog title? My first cat's nickname, as she was a "house panther." She is immortalized as my icon. (At the time I set up tumblr/ao3 my main fandom was Avengers, and Black Panther is officially the best Avenger, i will not be taking arguments, so it was also a subtle fandom reference.)

OTP(s) + Shipname: I have whatever the opposite of an OTP is. In the Avengers fandom I literally wrote a fic about how I cannot stop from shipping everything, though frostiron, winterbaron, and thorki are the only things I still keep up with (in fanart, don't read much fic there anymore). I currently write SGA fandom mostly John Sheppard/Todd the Wraith (I think we're trying to make jodd work but i don't think there's an official ship name), but I'll ship Todd with almost anyone and my "first crush" in the fandom was shepdex. Lately I've been reading through the garashir tag in the DS9 fandom, mostly because I'm slightly obsessed with Garak and my top five ships in the fandom have like 10 fics between them and I already read all those.

If you could have any job you wish, what would it be? Realistically? Librarian. I went to school for it, but at that time I wanted to be a book dragon cataloger and just sit in the back and pet the books and not talk to people, which no one wants to pay someone to do. Now, I've realized I really like helping people find what they want, so it would be cool to work circulation. But like, not at a school, university, or corporate library, and not at a public library in the jurisdiction where i currently live. So. that limits my choices.

You mentioned in a previous post that in your Up and Under the Witchlight AU that Hazel and Bitsy are smooching, are their any other ships cannon in your AU?

If you don’t mind me asking, How is the team dynamic in general in your AU?

Hehe yeah :3 I'm a HUGE fan of Hazel/Bitsy (my shipname for em is Bumblemon), so I had to make em canon for the AU at all costs hehe >:3 They ofc aren't together quickly, and aren't exactly "official" for a while.

Aside from them, Booker/Grumley is canon as well! I adore them in Uprooted in general as well, and thought their dynamic would be fun to play around with in the Witchlight setting. Everyone in the group knows that there's SOMETHIN going on between em. Bitsy and Jean Claude both ask if they're a couple shortly after meeting them LOL

I think Peggy and Jean Claude would be funny as well, but I'll decide that later,,, So as of now, just Hazel/Bitsy and Booker/Grumley!

HOWEVER! I will say, there is a LOT of sexual tension between the whole party let's be honest here :skull:

NOW! In terms of the team dynamic! They're not *too* much different from themselves in Uprooted, but there are some differences that I will be expanding upon as I work on the AU some more (so don't take everything I say as of right now as a "100% canon/confirmed aside from the ships), but here's some basics!

Characterization wise, they are the same aside from the few differences that will change due to their Classes, since those will effect the most in terms of their dynamics due to slightly-changed backstories.

They're more organized / structured in terms of the way they go about things. Not to say that some sort of bullshit never happens, of course, but they've been through some tough shit together.

Booker is still the leader of the group ofc, although he has a bit more of a grasp on them in comparison to Uprooted. He "knows" (aka believes) that if he doesn't keep the party under control, shit will happen and he would rather not have to clean up after everyone.

With Peggy actually having magic, everyone's excitement over her work is lessened, so she overcompensates a lot to make them impressed, cause the gods know how much she loves to have everyone consider her great and powerful. She does this by treating her spells as her own new and/or improved creations. Bitsy is really the only one truly impressed, so Peggy is HELLA ego boosted when they meet her.

As mentioned above, Bitsy/Hazel and Booker/Grumley will be canon, so their dynamics will go a lil differently due to the romantic attraction / sub-plotlines regarding them, including how it'll effect the group.

Jean Claude's dynamic with them will most likely change the most? Mostly because he won't be serving as a lawyer too much despite still technically being one. He doesn't have to break them out of prison or anything, they more so stumble upon his firm (like the OUaW crew finds Twig) and he joins them at first to *keep* them out of trouble. So he serves as more of a "stop doing crazy illegal shit" kinda guy at first.

Booker and Jean Claude do butt heads at first. I imagine that Jean Claude would almost start to take on a leader-type role, not necessarily on purpose, but because he knows the Feywild the most, and everyone turns to him for a lot of stuff, which makes Booker feel a bit replaced. It's a little conflict that they have before Booker opens up to Jean Claude about it, something that VERY much so wasn't easy for him at first. I'm honestly quite excited to work on them hehe

Overall, nothing drastic! Of course, their dynamics will also be effected by the story itself, due to the new journey they'll be taking as apposed to everything they deal with in Uprooted!

Just wondering as I think a lot of people assumed that when Michelle came back they would have reunited Charity and Vanessa quickly but haven’t now with Suzy dying do you think they will ? And also do you think they’d ever put Aaron and Mack together?

I think they might with Vanity. I think Vanessa will find a shoulder to cry on in Charity about Suzy (especially when she finds out about the Mary/Suzy affair that I think they're going to reveal soon) and Charity will look for comfort about her guilt over the crash and her investigation into who spiked Noah.

There were some cracks starting to show between Mack and Charity yesterday with him being annoyed at her and her vendetta against Joe - I don't think they're going to last.

As for Mack and Aaron... I'm a Mack/Aaron shipper (did we ever decide on a shipname? Mackron?) so I definitely wouldn't mind (if they can't get Ryan/Robert back that is) but they keep pushing the Mack is Straight agenda so I don't know if they would ever actually Go There... but it would be so good if they did. Finally Danny would have (romantic) scenes with someone he actually has chemistry with again!

SO the idea I have for them is somewhat ? of a work in progress AU, theres a lot of ideas I wanna go with but only ones gonna be "canon" yknow, I'll tell you what I got so far

starting with Hemlock, my insert, hes in his mid 40s, lives in Unova, and runs an apothecary shop, where exactly? Not sure yet but hes got a shop. He grows a lot of herbs to treat ailments for both people and pokemon, has a lot of knowledge on medical aid and home brews his own medicines with the venom from his arbok and seviper. In total he has a seviper, arbok, dragonair and a serperior, none of which he really *likes* battling with since theyre much more like pets, if he had to though, dragonair and serperior are his main sources of protection. He also has an overgrown house cat (liepard)

As for Giovanni, the main idea I have for him is after the events in Johto, he's been missing from those regions for years, and he's found himself in Unova (where conveniently, Kanto and Johto have no jurisdiction.) He's put crime (for the most part) behind him, and focuses his ambitions to be the very best (and boosting his ego) at the Pokemon World Tournament.

I've liked the idea of Hemlock being Roxie's uncle, both being poison oriented goobers ofc. So I'd like to think Roxie begged Hemlock to take her to see a tournament, which he agreed upon cause he likes spoiling her, fun uncle n all that. By chance, Hemlock sees Giovanni there and he's immediately intrigued. He kinda gets hooked on going to these tournaments for a bit and cheering on his favorite trainers there. Once more by chance, Hemlock sees Giovanni at a bar, it's late, not many people around, he manages to get on speaking terms with him and that's how I met your mother /silly

Hemlocks always been the super inviting hospitality type, he's very genuine in everything he says and does and he's a massive softie, I like to think Giovanni finds that endearing after working with a bunch of suck ups and people who feared him. Honestly Giovanni probably thought Hemlock wanted something from him as well considering he was a fan in a sense before, but he came to learn pretty quickly Hemlocks just this big nerd who grows plants all day and doesn't care about status, money or power

Onto more fluffier stuff, they're both old men, they both wanna settle down at the end of a day, a lot of their quality time is spent cooped up and quiet together, maybe with the usual bit of Hemlocks rambling about whatevers been going on at work or about a new herb he's excited to grow. Giovanni's an extremely attentive partner and person in general, he can read Hemlock like a book and always knows exactly what he needs. Hemlocks attentive in other ways, always doing acts of service even if Giovanni insists he doesn't, but it's just in his nature to care for those around him

How quickly were you ensnared by Alphard Black/Tom Riddle ship? Was it before or after the ship name tournament over at TheRealVinelle and TheCarnivorousMuffin Meta? If I may enquire is there anything that you can point to about it that particularly compels you?

*Puts on hipster glasses* I've been shipping Alphalord since before it had a name. xD Can't remember the timeline exactly. I hadn't discovered Amulette d'amour that much before the quiz - perhaps a month or so? I started out ironically enjoying the shipname but must now confess my enjoyment has become unironic.

As for what compels me about it - a lot. I like ships that are interesting to read, where the relationship between the two characters is fascinating and emotionally compelling and where the story is more interesting because of their relationship. And this fits the bill.

First off, there's the characters. Both Tom and Alphard are really interesting and complex and multifaceted characters that I enjoy reading about and they are even more fun and interesting when they're together. I love the way the ways they compliment each other as well as how different they are. It creates a fascinating dynamic where they play off each other in really interesting ways that makes their interactions and their conversations really interesting and entertaining and just a joy to read. I love how they are both so similar and yet so radically different - both in terms of lived experience and personality and approach to the world. I like how they can balance each other. I love how they're both very intellectual and each can be both very cynical and very idealistic but in every case the presentation of these similar traits is extremely different in each of them. And the ways they are different and distinct in their personalities and their abilities are also really important. They are compatible but also very individual, each interesting in their own right, complimenting, rather than duplicating each other.

And then there's the whole added layer of their contrasting social standings and how that plays into their relationship (and how that would differ depending on when exactly we're talking about within the canon storyline - i.e. is Tom Voldemort yet or not etc?) It's also interesting because on the one hand if we're talking early days, Alphard enjoys far more social power, but on the other hand that means he has more to lose.

I love how for all that they are so different they fit together so well (with the potential to create so much more chaos than either could individually) while also fitting together so poorly because of the society they live in (not to mention their, shall we say, divergent career interests) which fuels so much plot potential. There's so much potential for interesting plots and high emotional stakes and sheer comedy with a lot of room to explore different themes and dynamics depending on the exact setup. It's just fun.

But liking a ship or a character is about more than the sum of the parts. It's also a feeling. I just find both characters absolutely fascinating and entertaining and I find this ship absolutely delightful and deeply compelling.
