—a tangcheong reincarnation ficlet set during the shaolin tournament arc 👍
»—————————–✄
Part 1 2 3
baek cheon didn't think much of the loud commotion being made in the audience stands as a large family entered the arena.
"huh? what's all that noise over there?" yoon jong voiced out.
the rest of the mount hua disciples turned their heads in the direction yoon jong was pointing at and they watched as people unabashedly stared at the person in the center of the group.
"you missing a cousin or something, samae?" one of the disciples joked.
the man in question looked closer to a tang than he did his own family members who walked beside him. whereas their hair were varying shades of light brown, his was dark and closer to tang soso's own color.
tang soso frowned, narrowing her eyes as she tried to peer at his features which were slightly too far to distinguish properly.
"I don't recall having any cousins in shaolin..." she mutters as yu iseol also tilted her head in question.
the man's gaze sweeped lazily across the arena. even from afar, baek cheon could tell that the man's gaze was contemptuous.
he didn't need to use his qi to enhance his eyesight to know that the gaze that was thrown towards the sect leaders' stand was absolutely scathing.
jo gul scratched his cheek. "he must be the rumored son of the zheng merchant family. see the crest on his robes?"
"what do you know of him?" baek cheon asked. he doesn't really understand why but a part of him felt like he had to be on-guard towards the strange man.
"not much," jo gul winced, "just that he's a bit older than us and that he...mildly poisoned one of the daughters of another family in sichuan."
"..."
they all turned towards tang soso.
"are you sure he's not part-tang or something?" yoon jong asked.
their conversation is abruptly interrupted by loud shouts cheering for shaolin.
the disciples of mount hua shared resolute nods as they began marching forward, letting the praises pouring out from the audience straighten their spines and walk more resolutely.
chung myung seamlessly slipped back into their fold, the money pouches he brought with him noticably emptier than when he had arrived.
it felt as if the cheers for them rang louder than those for shaolin. it was a very ovewhelming feeling and all of them could feel the pressure on their shoulders.
once again, they watch the reliable back of their sajil as chung myung finally sets foot on the stage, gazing up.
the current head of the zheng family was not influenced by the excitement that seemed to radiate from his fellow tournament-goers. rather, his eyes were locked on the face of his elder brother who he had never seen look as emotional as he did now.
there was disbelief on his face. he wore a strange expression which wavered between hope and doubt. unfathomable emotions swam in his eyes.
"ge, is everything alright?" he worriedly asked. "if you wish to leave, we don't have to—"
"no." zheng bo cut him off. "we're staying."
he shared concerned looks with his other siblings, but they silently agreed to let it be.
their eldest brother had always been distant, but he was never unkind to them.
they could never understand where the weight zheng bo seemed to always carry on his shoulders came from, but he never lashed at them.
they had never known zheng bo to be anything other than melancholic, so seeing the way the beginnings of a lively spark enter his eyes...
it was as if they were watching him transform into someone else for a moment.
"hyung...?" zheng bo murmured as he practically threw himself over the railing to get a closer look.
luckily, their youngest sibling, about the same age as the youngest second class disciple of mount hua, managed to pull their eldest brother back by the robe.
"zheng bo, what's gotten into you?" their mother worriedly clutched at him.
a string of incomprehensible muttering escaped zheng bo's lips. "...a descendant? no, he—a wife? no, as if..."
questioning stares were thrown their way from other audience members, but they were quickly distracted by the start of the deciding battle between the two finalists.
it was a battle that no one could have ever expected.
it felt too one-sided and the zheng family, as with the rest of the spectators, found themselves at a complete loss over the practically one-sided battle between shaolin's hye yeon and mount hua's chung myung.
there was heavy and glooming feeling charging the atmosphere. the previous racuous and excited cheers turned into silent feelings of apprehension and confusion.
“this is nothing compared to what mount hua has been through.”
zheng bo let out a pained, heartaching noise.
"ge," the second zheng son started, still lost. "do you know what he's talking about?"
it seemed to him that chung myung was talking about something beyond the prior slow decline of their sect.
zheng bo seemed to be too overcome with his own emotions to answer.
they all turned back their heads to the stage and were graced with the sight of a soft curve of a blade that arched beautifully, tearing apart all the golden winds thrown towards its weilder's way by hye yeon.
"beautiful..." someone in the audience behind them mumbled.
and it truly was a mesmerizing sight to see.
and it became all the more so when plum blossoms pink, an unstoppable multitude, bloomed from chung myung's sword.
tang bo crumpled where he had was standing.
happiness, guilt, and, most of all, /relief/ wrapped themselves around his heart—his heart which, for the longest time, for over three decades, had been hollowed and emptied out of any possible feelings.
"you're here too."
tang bo didn't have to be alone anymore.

it still makes me genuinely offended that DAVG opens on Varric narrating about Solas and going "Solas is very against slavery, one of the only thing we agree on", because i've seen people say "well yeah i hope so it's the bare minimum" and like
Literally half the cast of DAI for example, yknow, the game Solas and Varric met on, were pro-slavery in one shape or form. The one thing DAVG doesn't tell you is what Solas considers to be Slavery to start with, because it is how some companions will tell you "yeah i'm against slavery" and then will talk about somehow removing someone's freedom completely in one shape or form. Look at DAI's Solas' banters with Dorian (who's in DAVG and is a slavery abolitionist SPECIFICALLY, as said in the books, because Solas changed his mind in DAI) or with Iron Bull and you'll learn a lot.
"the one thing we agreed on" is super fucking funny from the character who has always famously been a Centrist, who genuinely didn't want to listen to Anders in da2 when Anders was talking about the inherent slavery of the Circles, and, if Hawke sides with the System rather than the oppressed in da2, Varric will disapprove of Mage Freedom in DAI, which is one of the type of slavery Solas is fighting against for example. Just because the game doesn't allow you to import Varric's past doesn't erase that Varric is a centrist as fuck.
Like sorry it's not our fault DAVG have the most innoffensive companion cast in the whole franchise that you don't know how it's like to have companions with actual offensive opinions that exists to challenge your point of view but that doesn't mean you know exactly how DA companions usually work and why it's an important part of Solas' character.
And sorry also that the game talks so little about Slavery and the multiple ways it manifest in Thedas but that doesn't mean you should just take that at face value.
"gngngn Solas being anti-slavery is the bare minimum" tell that to Varric the Centrist for fuck's sake you DONT KNOW HIM.

my neutral dragon age trait is that 50% of the time i'm like "the more i critique the games, the more i love them. i can appreciate each game for what they are but my criticism and frustration over what they could be are a sign of love" and the other 50% is like "this is the writing of the dragon age series. sure. why not. this may as well happen."
#post inspired by seeing a post where someone was asking a blog like 'hey ive only played veilguard what is a mage circle'#50% biting the bars of my cage over the way lore/plot/priorities have shifted and changed over time#50% along for the ride#but on that first point: looking at the plot of veilguard (stopping solas/elgar'nan and ghilan'nain)#im not surprised the mage/templar shit wasn't a big deal#and honestly any frustration i have with that is more so aimed at dai#bc dai was what first reduced the mage/templar war to 'here are some assholes fighting in the woods'#however.#objectively WILD that someone could play ur whole ass game and not know what mage circles/templars are#and then the confusion over an elven rook's backstory is honestly just laughable to me like akjdsjkdf#theyre dalish but they also lived in a town and if they're a mage they also studied somewhere#like. honestly imo not a big issue but like. a simple dialogue choice could've solved this.#it's so funny to me bc it's ridiculous but also. bring back ambient dialogue choices.#like tldr though#i super enjoyed veilguard and i appreciated it for what it did#and while not perfect. i'm a sucker for a story about friends and bonds.#and i think as an interpersonal story it works really well#and i can at the very least respect the writers/devs making the game not as open world#even though i do miss that a lot (as well as talking to ur companions mechanics)#however. the detachment from previous lore is definitely jarring.#not that i think veilguard needed to be about (for instance) the mages and templars#and honestly im happy we got companions that felt unique#bc i was getting real tired of 'here are the elves who hate each other. here is the one who doesnt trust mages'#etc etc etc#and getting to see all these factions was really nice too (though in a perfect world we'd have a legit origin quest imo)#but even just. some kind of way to bring in prev lore#tldr 2 i have my frustrations with the narrative arc as a whole and find them fun to talk abt#but sometimes im just like. it already happened. it's already written.#i will think abt what could've been while also just having fun w/ what i got#final tldr 3 i think dragon age is just the one series that im not always itching to meta essay on LMAOOO

“Llorumi is bad because it’s incest” is like an egregious misunderstanding on Harumi and her relationship with both garmadons. There are a lot of reasons why Llorumi is a bad relationship but to say Harumi is Lloyds sister is certainly not it and more fanon than anything
Harumi is a manipulator and while she has antagonized Lloyd, she sees Garmadon as a god and puts him up on a pedestal because he is the one who defeated the devourer and (more importantly) to make a divide between Garmadon and Lloyd
That is what Harumi was trying to do, separate them. She wants power and control over the thing she believes destroyed her life. By romancing Lloyd and having Garmadon have this fatherly relationship with her pushes them apart (because lloyd is also garmadons weakness) . We forget Garmadon is also a victim of her manipulation even though in the end the power dynamic between them changed
If we want to negate Harumi and Lloyds relationship on the basis that they are toxic and lloyd was manipulated, then the “familial dynamic” between harumi and Garmadon should also be negated because it was also the result of manipulation, therefore it’s not really fair to call it incest….ew
Even in the instance we rid of the entire plot of s8 and Llorumi was somehow a thing that wasn’t based on manipulation, Garmadon would probably see her as a daughter still, but y’know as an in-law
But in canon neither of them view each other that way and it’s really unfair to put that on Lloyd when he fell for her before all the bs took place
Harumi managed to develop a parasocial relationship that wasn’t about having a father figure but obsessive hatred for the son and an obsessive fascination about Garmadon. Not only did she wrap it up into a cult and put a bow on it, she developed unhealthy bonds with both of them to the point she doesn’t know what to do with herself in regard to them, nor does she know how to feel about either of them anymore during crystalized.
She fucked herself up along with Garmadon and Lloyd and it really shows but the point im trying to make is saying Lloyd and Harumi are related does not make a lot of sense and it’s a bit weird to put a family dynamic between them that is based on manipulation and then negate the romance based on the same thing

Oooo dragon age! I've only ever played inquisition and I ADORE that game so much, waiting to hopefully play the previous ones someday soon. I'm a bit on the fence about Veilguard simply because I wouldn't be continuing the story as my beautiful disaster inquisitor son
hey you get to see (& customise!) your inquisitor son in dav!! hope you get to play the old ones soon (they're always super cheap in sales loll) but yeah completely fair to be on the fence over veilguard, there's definitely a reason DAI won game of the year and DAV didnt lmao

idk not to be an apostate on main but sometimes beliefs Are inherently harmful, actually. especially when a core part of the belief is that if someone doesn't follow that expectation they're a horrible person and should die
