karunira + post-meteor injuries

gonna write this up for how it relates to my post-borderland au stuff. if niragi ends up showing up in s3 or if i think of anything else, then i’ll update this, but here’s what i’ve got for now.

niragi:

sustained severe burns mainly localised to his right side. post-healing resulted in burn scars to the right side of his face (mainly cheek, temple and rightmost forehead), down his neck and right arm, over much of his collar, down his chest and side, on both of the fronts and backs of his hands and spottily on his left wrist and forearm. has some smaller burns over his right hip and thigh.

his hair was burnt and ended up having to be cut shorter. has been steadily growing it back out.

had to stay in the hospital for a long time post-meteor while he healed and had to do physical therapy. likes tidiness but too much sterility and the smell of hospital-grade cleaners makes him uncomfortable.

sustained serious damage to his right eye. was told he was lucky to not lose it completely. is unlikely to ever get full vision back, reacts to changes in light but can’t see more than that. due to the severe damage, the iris changed to a opaque pale bluish-grey. wore glasses for a while and does when he’s home, but otherwise returned to wearing contacts in his undamaged eye.

has chronic pain of the neuropathic/nerve pain variety, specifically post-burn neuropathic pain. typically presents as mild sensitivity and frequent-though-temporary pins and needles, but flare ups cause a severe burning sensation and a higher sensitivity to touch on his scars. also has joint pain and stiffness in his hands and wrists, worse in his right hand; tends to self-soothe by massaging his fingers and palms. is medicated (pills and anaesthetic cream) but has a bad habit of leaving doctor’s appointments and prescriptions refills until the last minute. frequently overworks himself and doesn’t get enough rest.

tends to lash out verbally during flare-ups as a pain response. keeps his diagnosis a secret for the most part so people tend to think he’s just ‘being more of an asshole than usual’, especially since he usually doesn’t apologise later. doesn’t like to be ‘pitied or babied’. only gets vulnerable around those he trusts.

infrequent, but he sometimes mixes his medication with alcohol. usually resulting in dizziness and/or severe drowsiness; people who don’t know he’s on medication assume it’s just from the alcohol.

karube:

was considered to be extremely lucky to survive the meteor incident. sustained serious injury to his throat, almost bleeding out but was fortunately found in time by emergency aid workers. left with scattered scars across his neck and a small scar beneath his chin. was struck by debris, resulting in a large sliced scar over his left side.

has trouble staying still for long so he ended up requesting to leave the hospital early before he was fully healed. the doctors were eventually worn down and agreed due to having so many worse-off patients and so few rooms/beds available.

was fortunate enough to not be left with any persistent or chronic pains post-injuries, but has some lingering survivor’s guilt that increased his already sizeable caretaking nature. has a hard time saying 'no' to people if they need help, worries about his friends overworking themself and most likely to check in on everyone, feels guilty when he thinks about the people that died in the meteor incident, especially chota.

has nightmares/night terrors. they tend to be about things that happened in the borderland though he doesn’t realise they’re 'memories', usually about his actions during the seven of hearts. wakes up feeling shaken and confused and sometimes strangely guilty. sometimes he thrashes around during his nightmares. he doesn’t normally talk in his sleep, but does when he has these nightmares. after he wakes up, he can’t get back to sleep and ends up starting his day early.

doesn’t like to talk about his nightmares; half because things happening in them confuse him, half because he doesn’t like how he acts in them. he doesn’t talk to arisu about his nightmares, but arisu knows when he’s had a bad one because he gets drunk and brings up chota. refused therapy when arisu gently brought it up.

always the caretaker, never the caretaken.
