A Glimpse into the Spiritual and Cultural Richness of Jammu and Kashmir

Kashmir, often referred to as "Paradise on Earth," is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, serene lakes, and snow-capped mountains. Beyond its natural beauty, Kashmir is also a land rich in religious and cultural heritage. The region is home to diverse religious places in Kashmir and there are vibrant festivals in Jammu and Kashmir that reflect its historical and spiritual significance.
Religious Places in Kashmir
1. Shankaracharya Temple: Perched on the Shankaracharya Hill, the Shankaracharya Temple is one of the oldest and most revered Hindu shrines in the Kashmir Valley. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this ancient temple is believed to have been visited by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The temple offers a panoramic view of Srinagar and the Dal Lake, making it a spiritual and visual treat for visitors.
2. Hazratbal Shrine: Located on the northern shores of the Dal Lake, the Hazratbal Shrine is the holiest Muslim shrine in Kashmir. It houses a relic believed to be a hair of the Prophet Muhammad. The shrine's pristine white marble structure and its serene surroundings attract devotees and tourists alike. The annual celebrations during the festivals of Eid and Milad-un-Nabi see a significant influx of pilgrims.
3. Amarnath Cave Temple: The Amarnath Cave Temple is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated at an altitude of 3,888 meters, the temple is famous for the naturally occurring ice Shiva Lingam. The annual Amarnath Yatra, which takes place in the summer months, draws thousands of devotees who undertake a challenging trek to pay their respects.
4. Jama Masjid: Situated in the heart of Srinagar’s old city, the Jama Masjid is a stunning example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Built in 1394 by Sultan Sikandar, it features 378 wooden pillars and an expansive courtyard. The mosque is not only a place of worship but also a center for social and cultural gatherings.
5. Kheer Bhawani Temple: Located in the village of Tulmulla, about 25 kilometers from Srinagar, the Kheer Bhawani Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi. The temple is named after the rice pudding (kheer) that is offered to the goddess by devotees. The annual festival of Mela Kheer Bhawani, held on the occasion of Zyestha Ashtami, sees thousands of devotees thronging the temple.
Festivals in Kashmir

1. Navroz: Navroz, the Persian New Year, is widely celebrated by the Shia Muslim community in Kashmir. It marks the beginning of the spring season and is a time for family gatherings, feasting, and prayers. Traditional foods, such as lamb dishes and sweets, are prepared, and homes are decorated to welcome the new year.
2. Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha: Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, while Eid-ul-Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. Both festivals are celebrated with great fervor in Kashmir. Special prayers are held in mosques, and families come together to share festive meals and distribute alms to the needy.
3. Maha Shivaratri (Herath): Maha Shivaratri, locally known as Herath, is a significant festival for Kashmiri Pandits. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is celebrated with night-long vigils, prayers, and the offering of walnuts as a symbol of fertility. Special dishes, such as fish and rice, are prepared for the occasion.
4. Baisakhi: Baisakhi, primarily a harvest festival, is celebrated with enthusiasm by the Sikh community in Kashmir. It also marks the Punjabi New Year and the formation of the Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh. The festival involves prayers, kirtans (devotional songs), and community feasts known as langars.
5. Hemis Festival: The Hemis Festival, held in the Hemis Monastery in Ladakh (part of the greater Kashmir region), is a vibrant celebration dedicated to Lord Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). The festival features colorful masked dances, traditional music, and rituals performed by the monks. It is one of the most significant Buddhist festivals in the region.
6. Tulip Festival: While not a religious festival, the Tulip Festival in Srinagar has become a major cultural event. Held in April, the festival showcases the stunning bloom of tulips at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Asia's largest tulip garden. The event attracts tourists from across the globe and highlights Kashmir’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Conclusion
Kashmir’s religious places and festivals are a testament to its rich and diverse cultural tapestry. These sacred sites and celebrations not only provide spiritual solace to the faithful but also offer a glimpse into the region’s historical and cultural richness. Visiting these places and participating in the festivals provides an enriching experience that deepens one’s understanding of Kashmir’s unique heritage.

Legendary Moments from India vs England Matches Every Fan Remembers
India vs England has long been one of cricket’s most storied rivalries. Across formats, the two teams have produced unforgettable matches filled with drama, brilliance, and historical milestones. For fantasy cricket lovers on Vision11, these matches are more than entertainment — they’re sources of deep insight, emotion, and prediction value.
Let’s rewind the clock and relive legendary moments from India vs England matches that every true cricket fan remembers.
1. Lord’s 2021 – Bumrah and Shami's Miracle Partnership
India looked on the back foot until Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami produced a gritty 89-run unbeaten stand for the 9th wicket on Day 5. That unexpected twist flipped the game and powered India to a stunning win at Lord’s — a day where bowlers became batters and history was made.
Fantasy Angle: Bowlers who can bat (like Shami or Thakur) offer sneaky value in Vision11 fantasy teams, especially in Tests.
2. Chennai 2008 – Tendulkar’s Emotional Ton
Just days after the Mumbai terror attacks, India chased down a record 387 on a crumbling Chennai pitch. Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten century was more than a match-winning knock — it was a healing moment for the nation.
Fantasy Tip: In emotional, high-pressure matches, experienced players tend to deliver. Always bank on big-match performers in tight contests.
3. Headingley 2002 – Dravid, Ganguly, and Tendulkar’s Masterclass
India posted a mammoth 628/8 declared on the back of centuries from Dravid, Ganguly, and Tendulkar. The dominance was rare for an away series in England and showcased India’s batting depth in Tests.
Vision11 Insight: In overseas Tests, build fantasy teams around technically sound middle-order players who can grind it out.
4. T20 World Cup 2022 Semi-Final – Hales and Buttler Dismantle India
In one of India’s most disappointing T20 losses, England chased down 169 without losing a wicket. Hales and Buttler's clean hitting stunned fans and sealed England’s place in the final.
Fantasy Takeaway: Form and conditions often outweigh team rankings in T20s. Don’t overlook in-form foreign openers on flat tracks.
5. NatWest Final 2002 – Yuvraj and Kaif’s Heroics
India chased down 325 in one of the most emotional and unforgettable ODIs in cricket history. Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif’s spirited stand, followed by Ganguly waving his shirt at Lord’s, became a cultural moment.
Fantasy Lesson: Lower-order batters who can anchor innings during chases are game-changers. Always have one in your Vision11 team.
6. Chennai 2021 – Joe Root’s Double Century
On a tough Indian pitch, Joe Root scored a double century in his 100th Test. His footwork against spin and calm approach silenced critics and elevated his legendary status.
Fantasy Tip: Root is a fantasy goldmine in subcontinent conditions — consistent scoring and rare failures.
7. 1983 World Cup Semi-Final – India’s Giant Leap
India’s victory over England in the 1983 World Cup semi-final at Old Trafford paved the way for their first-ever title. Mohinder Amarnath and Kapil Dev played crucial roles in the match that redefined Indian cricket.
Legacy Insight: Historical matchups build momentum for future contests — track team trends when building Vision11 teams for rivalry matches.
8. 2011 World Cup – The Tie at Bangalore
A group-stage thriller where Andrew Strauss and Sachin Tendulkar both scored centuries. The game ended in a rare tie, keeping fans on the edge till the last ball.
Fantasy Note: When you expect a close, high-scoring game, stack your fantasy team with top-order batters and both team captains.
9. Lord’s 2014 – Ishant Sharma’s Short-Ball Barrage
India won at Lord’s after 28 years thanks to Ishant Sharma’s 7-wicket haul, all with short balls. It was a hostile spell that dismantled England’s batting and marked a rare fast-bowling win overseas.
Fantasy Strategy: Pick pace bowlers who adapt to conditions — bounce and reverse swing can be deadly in Tests.
10. T20I Series 2021 – Suryakumar Yadav's Breakthrough Knock
In a do-or-die T20I, Suryakumar Yadav smashed a stunning 50 on debut, announcing his arrival on the world stage. His innovative strokeplay gave India momentum in the series.
Fantasy Edge: Back debutants with strong domestic records and aggressive playing styles — they often offer high value at low selection rates.
Conclusion
India vs England games have delivered everything — emotion, skill, pressure, and pride. These legendary moments aren’t just memories; they’re clues. For fantasy sports fans on Vision11, they help identify patterns, player strengths, and game-breaking abilities.Get on Vision11 today, play smarter with historical insights, and relive the legacy of India vs England every time you build your team.

Tribute to Actor and Politician Malavalli Huchche Gowda Amarnath (Ambareesh)
Today, I am writing about an iconic figure from the South Indian Film Industry – the late actor and politician, Malavalli Huchche Gowda Amarnath, popularly known by his screen name, Ambareesh. He began his career with the famous director Puttanna Kanagal's film Nagarahavu, where he played a negative role. Later, he transitioned into a hero and became one of the most versatile actors of his time. His impact on both cinema and politics was significant.
Ambareesh's contribution to the film industry cannot be overstated. He acted in over 200 films, and his performances earned him a lasting place in the hearts of moviegoers. Among his notable works are Nagarahavu, Priya, Antha, Chakravyuga, and Hrudaya Haadithu. The film Antha, directed by Rajendra Singh Babu, catapulted him to stardom.
Apart from his film career, Ambareesh was also a respected politician. He was elected three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Mandya constituency and served as a minister in the government of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Known for his non-controversial nature, Ambareesh was loved by people from all political parties and made a considerable impact on his constituency, Mandya, with his efforts and initiatives for its development.
Ambareesh's personality was a mix of charm and strength. He was known for his smart, smiling, and tough appearance, but it was his kindness and humility that endeared him to his fans and the people of Mandya.
Though he is no longer with us, his memorable films and legacy in politics continue to live on. Today, I feel privileged to pay tribute to this legendary figure whose contributions to both cinema and society will never be forgotten.

Amit Varma My distrust of the state was given an intellectual framework when I got into political philosophy. And when I learned public choice theory, a branch of economics that studies how everyone in politics should be looked upon as a human being responding to incentives. The incentives of a politician are always to win the next election. They need money for this. The next elections always nearby. So all the incentives are short term incentives. And politicians soon realized that governance doesn't matter, especially when it's benefits are unseen and narratives matter. Voters also self interested and their apathy is rational, since one vote will seldom decide an election why waste too much time educating yourself on governance and Economics and Policy and so on, when they do vote it may be because of other incentives, like signaling loyalty to their tribe, or just to get a free bag of rice. And the third piece of this puzzle are bureaucrats. Bureaucrats also respond to incentives. According to the economist William niskanen, what they really care about are good salary, perks of the office, public reputation, power, patronage and ease of managing the bureau. They also want to play it safe. Continuing the status quo is a safe option and reforms are risky and could backfire. From all this we can conclude that the state is an oppressive beast that just grows and grows and grows. It accumulates power and never gives any of it away. Every state is on a slow lurch towards becoming a predatory state akin to a colonial power with native rulers. And yet despite these dark words, there is hope. Because human beings contain multitudes and they respond to a multitude of incentives, not just those that arise from their position. Some are animated by principles they hold dear. Some would genuinely like to make the world a better place. I would hold in my cynical way that this is an exception. But when these outliers express themselves, My God it's beautiful. This is what happened in 1991. When we opened up large parts of our economy, for once the government got out of the way of society, and immediately our economy boomed. And in the next 20 years, hundreds of millions of people were lifted out of poverty. I used to mistakenly believe that these reforms happened only because of our balance of payments crisis and the conditions the IMF set to bail us out and so on. But I have since discovered that a group of bureaucrats that works within the government spent almost a decade, the whole of the 1980s preparing the master plan that was eventually put in place in 1991. I've had episodes on the reforms and on TV Narsimha Rao who made them politically viable, and right now, I want to draw your attention to the following names, many of which you may not even have heard of. Rakesh Mohan , Amarnath Verma, IG Patel, Vijay Kelkar, Ashok Desai, Naresh Chandra, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and there are many more like this unsung heroes whose actions put food on the plates of unseen millions and gave hope to a nation. 13.07.22
