In the twelve years of their existence, the Dronarivm label has built a firm and reliable reputation of releasing nothing but quality ambient music. And doing so, they also built a strong network of artists – as is demonstrated by their 100th release: Illuminations III.

For this 24-track (2hr24 minute) compilation, they invited musicians who released music on the label to create a track in collaboration with another (Dronarivm-)artist of their choice. As a result, there is an amazing array of unique music spanning ‘the vast musical spectrum of the genre we generally call “ambient”‘. (ambientblog)

‘’This is a personal weblog about my current (ambient) favourites. It has recommendations(not ‘reviews’!) of music I encourage you to listen to, but also a lot of full length mixes to listen and/or download. The Ambientblog mixes characteristically are rather complex: they are not ‘mixtapes’ featuring full tracks, but a collage of mostly short fragments that are layered in such a way that the music may get a different connotation. To me, they often feel like a movie soundtrack. Since these mixes take quite a lot of work to create, there are not many of them – about 4 a year on average. But there is such a lot of great music released that I started to miss the radio shows that I was involved in. These shows simply presented the music, not in complex mixes but in ‘head-tail’ sequences, presenting full tracks in one continuous flow without spoken introduction inbetween. These are more like ‘mixtapes’ in the classic sense. They are much easier to create than the Ambientblog collages, though I still pay much attention to the sequencing of the tracks, which should feel natural from beginning to end while at the same time including different varieties of ambient/electronic/experimental music. I guess it must be something in the water in Belgium!? This self-released CD-R from Steiner (Stijn Hüwels), does not only look like it could be a new release on the Slaapwel-label, it also sounds like one. Which may not be very strange, considering that Stijn and Wim Maesschalk (Slaapwel records label owner) live in the same city and obviously know each other.

Untitled  comes in a DIY cardboard sleeve, with unique original polaroid artwork. It is a single track, just short of half an hour, that was recorded during a sleepless night in 2010 using an electric guitar, ebow and laptop.

This music obviously is perfect for playing softly at night while falling asleep. The guitar notes sound like a soft windchime, slowly resceding into the layered drones to divert your attention.

Perfect for insomniacs...but also for those that like to have gentle sounds playing in their environment, night OR day.

Ambientblog: If one of the criteria for 'ambient' music is that you can comfortably fall asleep to it, I guess you'd better skip this particular mix. Although it starts quiet and reassuring with soothing vocal chords from Silvestrov's "The Lord's Prayer", the mood disintegrates and sometimes can become rather unsettling - depending on your own personal 'incidental memories', of course.

For reasons I can't really explain, this mix works better if you listen on speakers instead of headphones - just let the airwaves flow for maximum immersion.

This mix was 'premiered' on Bob Rusche's X-Ray radio-show (Concertzender, Holland) on January 26, 2013. Thanks, Bob!
