It was 2:46 AM. The house was quiet, except for the occasional whirr of your printer and the soft tapping of your keyboard. You were working on your own group’s research paper because, surprise surprise, none of your groupmates had replied again. The familiar stress of being a STEM student hung over your head like a raincloud.

Hi lods, can you print something for me? 😔🙏🏻

You blinked at your screen. It took your brain a second to register that it was Sunghoon’s friend messaging you.

You: Sure, just send the files. If you have any additions later, my cutoff’s at 6:30 AM if you want me to hand it over at school.

Seconds later, he replied.

A tired giggle escaped your lips. You weren’t expecting to laugh at 2:48 AM, but somehow, he managed it.

Fifteen pages. Of course.

Your printer groaned to life. When it was time to clip them together, you paused.

You were out of plain paper clips. The only ones left were the red and green heart-shaped ones you made during Gen Bio class out of boredom until next thing you knew, there was a surprise quiz.

You stared at them.

No choice.

Let’s just hope Jake doesn’t mind red and green heart-shaped paperclips.

SCHOOL – SHS BUILDING

By 7:10 AM, you were already in school, CHOC-O in hand, a red plastic envelope resting on top of your Pre-Calculus notes. As soon as Sunghoon entered your shared classroom, you called him over.

"For your friend," you said, handing him the printout.

Later that morning, Jake walked over to Sunghoon, holding a bag of ChocNut and a Yakult.

"My payment," he said.

Sunghoon grunted as he took it. "Add more next time. Not enough effort for saving your ass."

Jake grinned, already flipping through the pages. His eyes landed on the pink heart-shaped clip.

"Ooh," he murmured, "there’s a heart."

Sunghoon rolled his eyes. "Don’t get your hopes up. She said that’s all she had left."

Jake held up the clip, inspecting it dramatically. "Oh yeah? Then I’m the one she had a heart left for."

He pressed the pink plastic heart to his chest, gasping like he’d been hit right in the feels. "Bro. Not only did she save my grade… she saved my heart."

Sunghoon gave him a deadpan look. "You’re so corny. Just return it later."

Jake clutched it tighter. "Can’t. This has sentimental value now. Symbolic."

And even though he said it as a joke, there was a small shift in his tone softer, more sincere.

Sunghoon noticed too. He raised an eyebrow.

"Hey. That was a joke. Don’t fall for a paper clip."

Jake only smirked, gently sliding the packet into his bag, the red heart still gleaming on the top page.

Class began in a buzz. You were half-listening to your bald teacher discussing limits, your pen doodling aimlessly on your notebook. Your eyelids felt heavy from last night’s research paper grind, and the only thing keeping you alive was the CHOC-O you chugged earlier.

Buzzed.

You choked on your breath. You stared at the photo your printout clipped together with the red heart. And below it… his hand. His actual hand in the frame, holding it carefully like it was something delicate.

Almost every other day, Jake would send files. At first, it was normal: lab reports, reflection papers, random group scripts.

It was a Friday. The kind that made your shoulders feel heavier from the whole week. The kind where the smell of fried siomai and burnt plastic from lab still clung to your uniform.

You were the last one out of the classroom, stuffing your red envelope into your tote bag when your phone buzzed.

Are you out already? Wait for me 😭 My last class just ended. I still owe you something, right?

You rolled your eyes, but your lips curved up anyway.

You: If it’s milk tea, noted. If you didn’t bring anything, don’t bother coming near me.

So harsh 😭😭

You were already halfway down the SHS stairs when you spotted him by the entrance still slightly sweaty from PE, lollipop in his mouth, wearing that half-unzipped hoodie over his uniform like he wasn’t melting in this country's heat.

And in his hand-

“Bigbew Java Chip. With pearls,” he grinned, holding it up like a trophy. “Large. For the queen of printing.”

You blinked.

“So now you still owe me Moby and Yakult.”

He stepped closer.

“Hey now, don’t I get points for this? Like a loyalty card? Fifth printout free, plus a bonus heart clip.”

You tried to act cool, tried not to stare too long at the drink or at him. Especially not when he stepped close enough that your bags brushed against each other.

He just stood there one hand in his pocket, the other swinging his own cup lazily at his side. His hoodie swayed as he shifted his weight, eyes flicking back to yours.

“Thanks for always saving me,” he said, a little quieter this time.

Your gaze met his. For once, he wasn’t being goofy. Not exactly serious but sincere enough to make your chest tighten.

“I mean it,” he continued.

“You’ve always been there even when my requests are weird. Even at 2AM. Even when my filenames are ridiculous. I realized… you’ve been my constant this whole term.”

Your tongue stuck to the roof of your mouth. Something warm bubbled in your chest and it wasn’t from the Java Chip.

“You’re welcome,” you said softly.

“But next time, if you want to thank me…”

You held up the cup teasingly. “2 Cold CHOC-O will do.”

Jake laughed that breathy, boyish kind of laugh that made your knees a little weak.

“Copy, ma’am. Noted,” he said, mock-saluting.

“Next time, I’ll pay for the paper clip too. I’ll make my own ‘Jake’s heart’ so we can match.”

You rolled your eyes but you were smiling. Biting it down, cheeks warm.

And when he turned to walk beside you, matching your pace down to the school gate, your shoulders didn’t feel so heavy anymore.

The two of you walked side by side past the crowded school gate, the sun casting long afternoon shadows, while the school guard gave the usual warning: “wala ng tambay-tambay jan!” (no loitering here!)

“Do you usually stay up late?” Jake asked, nudging a tiny pebble along the sidewalk with his shoe.

“Depends,” you said, sipping slowly. “If someone’s sending print requests at 3AM, then yeah.”

Jake winced. “Guilty. But I do pay generously, right?”

You shrugged. “Bribery doesn’t count if it’s cute.”

Jake blinked. “So… am I cute?”

You choked on your straw. “I said the milk tea is cute.”

But your ears betrayed you, burning pink.

“Noted,” he said, grinning. “Next time, I’ll buy something cute and handsome. For balance.”

You hated how easily he did that. How he dropped those lines without warning, like he wasn’t fully aware of the emotional chaos they caused.

But then again… maybe he was. Maybe Jake Sim knew exactly what he was doing.

“Hey,” he said suddenly, nodding toward a nearby sari-sari store. “Wanna get Nova?”

“Why would I want Nova?”

“Because it’s Friday. And your face says you bombed your Pre-Cal quiz.”

You groaned. “Don’t remind me.”

“C’mon, my treat. Making up for all the times I stressed you out with file names like ‘i.like.you.but.priorities.docx.’”

That made you laugh and your laugh made him smile.

The two of you went toward the sari-sari store.

"Tita isang Nova po pati dalawang Hany!"

Tita gave the goods to Jake.

“One for me,” he said. “And one for the most reliable printer owner-slash-pretty math hater I know.”

You tried to snatch the Nova and Hany before he could say anything else, but he pulled it back with a teasing glare. “Say please.”

“Give it,” you grumbled.

“Say ‘thank you, cute Jake Sim,’ then I’ll consider it.”

You squinted at him.

He gave you that grin again that toothy, slightly crooked one that always, always won.

You sighed. “Thank you, cute Jake Sim,” you said, completely deadpan.

“See? That wasn���t so hard,” he laughed, finally handing it over.

As you made your way back toward the school corner to wait for your respective rides home, the noise died down. The laughter faded into soft tricycle engines and chatter of students heading home.

A breeze passed by. And you became hyper-aware of how close he was. How his arm almost brushed yours every few steps.

“Can I be honest?” he asked.

You glanced at him, heart already starting to race. “Sure.”

Jake scratched the back of his neck. “I didn’t actually need half those things printed.”

You blinked. “What?”

“I mean, okay, I did. But not all of them. Not every night. I just—” He laughed at himself. “I guess I liked talking to you. Even if it was just me naming my essay ‘iloveyoupls.docx’ just to make you laugh.”

You didn’t say anything right away. You couldn’t. Because your brain was short-circuiting from how casually and sincerely he said that.

“And also,” he added, shifting his weight, “I kept hoping maybe one day… you’d reply with something like ‘iloveyoutoo.docx confirmed.’”

Your eyes widened. And because you were you, and he was him you burst out laughing. “I hate you,” you said, covering your face.

“Do you?” he teased. “Or are you just shy?”

“Shut up.”

Jake smiled but didn’t push it further.

Just then, your ride texted: “I’m outside.” You showed him your screen.

“Same. Gotta head out too,” he said, softer now.

You nodded, stepping back. “Thanks for the milk tea. And the Nova. And the Hany...”

He grinned. “Expect more. Lots of projects next week, honey”

“What. HAHAHA. Just don’t name the next one *‘imissyou.pdf,’ okay,"

“Too late,” he winked. “Already sent.”

You walked away shaking your head, cheeks warm, lips tugging into a quiet smile.

As you climbed into the tricycle, sipping the last of your Bigbew Java Chip, you opened your phone and there it was.

You laughed, pressing your back to the seat.

These days, Jake still sends you files though now, they’re less about grades and more about grins. PowerPoint memes with Comic Sans captions. Birthday cards typed in Word Doc with way too many clip arts. One time, he even sent you a fully formatted essay titled “The Scientific Reason Why You Should Let Me Hold Your Hand.”

You gave him a 95 for formatting. And a heart sticker for effort.

So when your phone pinged during a lull in a rainy Sunday, you weren’t surprised to see his name again.

truth scrapper trailer theorycrafting extravaganza (part 3 - amour & betz and repeated symbols)

spent a while theorizing yesterday about truth scrapper after the trailer release; parts 1 and 2 focused on sosotte, saturated items, the truth scrappers guild, and the dwell. this final part will contain theories about amour & betz and observations about repeated symbols within the trailer!

as mentioned previously, i'm only going to post stuff i personally said for the other folks in the server's privacy, and focus primarily on my own thoughts so that i don't take credit for others' without showing them. but definitely keep in mind other people were there and saying so many interesting things and we were pinging off each other a lot, so a lot of my thoughts were inspired by the other very smart very fun people talking! also note that alt text has been provided for all screenshots if they get hard to read anywhere. anyway let's finish up this mess

(perhaps that is why i think betz should be a girlloser. howl is after all the original. but no more genuinely i think betz is so put-together-looking / 3 on silly little guy scale / 'kind and proper' / you get what i'm going for, right? like the vibes. the vibes of being someone who should not be a loser. that he just deserves it? they do apparently swear the most so i feel like when they do lose composure it'll be really something and i want it to happen <3 in the nicest way possible i swear)

(not really a theory. just an observation. good for you amour)

this isn't something i talked about yesterday but i'm interested in the juxtaposition of how amour and betz are described in the steam listing and the website.

for amour, the steam listing: mischievous and curious; website: annoying, but susceptible to flattery / dull, helpful. for betz, the steam listing: kind and proper; website: knight in shining armor / a bit of a pushover. it's like the website is saying the same or similar things in the least charitable or most clinical way possible. mischievous and curious - annoying. proper - knight in shining armor (which i think i understandably view as sounding sort of derisive in this context). kind - a bit of a pushover.

it'll be very interesting to see how this pans out in practice. which of the descriptions is right? is betz actually a pushover, or is who is speaking in those bios just condescending towards kind people? if the knight in shining armor thing is indeed intending to be derogatory, is it always a good thing for betz that he feels inclined to help, or will the people subject to it sometimes feel it condescending? betz has a brigade named after them. is it a fanclub (and if so, how does he feel about that? especially as someone who gets embarrassed easily) or people who feel they need to protect him (and if so, why?) or a group of people they lead (and if so, why, and are they a force for good overall or a larger symptom of a need for control or something)? is amour actually a proper herhimbo (as it were) this time or is the person who wrote the bios not inclined to dig any deeper because it isn't useful for the mission? we know from the faq that they're not always going to 'make the best decisions for themselves or one other' so while my first and also second and third reactions to the website bios are 'what?? mean' and i do still think that is true i can't help wondering whether there's some truth to it as well that will end up becoming pertinent to the larger emotional narrative

i also think that these characteristics will interface with sosotte's memory in intriguing ways. (yes i used 'intriguing' just so that i wouldn't use 'interesting' again hush it's fine) amour is curious--will he want to know more about sosotte's memory loss, and if so, is it something that will grate against sosotte for her to poke at? betz is kind, but could that feel like condescension to somebody with what equates to a disability (if potentially a magical one), and if they are also proper, could that rub up badly sometimes against sosotte forgetting? and that's not even getting into the fact that it's mentioned what you choose to remember can influence how sosotte reacts in the future. if sosotte writes that betz is kind, she will be more inclined to view things charitably. if she writes that betz is nosy and interfering or something instead, that can color everything a different direction. 🤔 missteps upon missteps

the last thing i didn't mention but that i'm still wondering about today is that the interview from yesterday mentions the game will go the classic vn route of needing to complete good endings for both characters before being able to unlock the true ending. i'm crossing my fingers for polyam true ending (we'll seeeeee i just love polyamory endings... [everyone who knows the fic i'm writing stares at me in deadpan. yes yes we all know what i'm about lol] but i am also very very curious if there will be bad endings. i almost hope there is...i'm highly allergic to being ~mean~ in gameplay so it'd wig me out on one hand but on the other, narratively, i desire Consequences

these mostly were just me pointing out stuff i saw a lot within the trailer when i was going frame by frame! it's a lot more me asking questions about what they mean than proposing answers but hey

(the rest of the forget me nots are much more obvious but i think it's important that they're on sosotte's mind enough that she doodles them also!)

(walls of cul-de-puits for the first, scrapbook cover/insides blocked by gameplay window for the second two. if i had to guess, i'd think the previous symbols are different but related and have to do with rituals--some sort of writing system perhaps?--and the second is a truth scrapper symbol. mostly because light makes me think of, like, revealing the truth? but perhaps it has something to do with another element of the world)

anyway there we are, that's about the sum of the stuff i went over yesterday! i'm terribly excited to learn more and to find out more about the world. fighting off the urge to start a truth scrapper spreadsheet in all honesty. if you have any theories and wanna talk about them feel free to yell them in my general direction! otherwise i hope this was, if nothing else, something vaguely amusing for people to look upon one day. thanks for readin' o7 brin out

here’s a bunch of miscellaneous ones I was able to think of over the course of today :3 (in no particular order and a mix of modern and canon compliant and muggle and every au LMAO)

I’ve talked about this before but barty has separation anxiety and can’t sleep without holding/being held by evan

Barty’s love language is physical touch and evan’s is quality time so they’re completely inseparable they’re always together

Barty is always touching evan in some way whether it be a hug, or holding his hand, or an arm around his shoulder or waist, or resting a hand on his arm or cuddling or wtv else

They know each other inside and out and so completely they can have full conversations just looking at each other not talking

they both hate crying in front of other people and do it extremely rarely but when it’s just the 2 of them they start sobbing at literally anything super easily

evan fell first (started crushing on barty all the way back in first year) and barty fell harder (realized all at once one day in sixth year after years of feelings subconsciously piling up and had a mega crash out to dorcas about it)

Their fav dates are when they just sit in bed and cuddle and watch movies and eat snacks and yap about wtv they’re watching cause they’re both massive nerds

evan loves pineapple pizza and barty despises it and refuses to try it on principle (italian) (he’ll never ever admit it but he tried it once and actually thinks it’s the best creation in all of ever) (evan knows this and teases him about it)

They’re disgustingly affectionate and everyone hates them for it /hj

Barty’s name in evan’s phone is “pain in the ass (love of my life 💛)” and evan’s name in barty’s phone is “my angel 🖤”

They have like ten billion matching tattoos/tattoos dedicated to each other <3333

barty calls evan evie, ev, rosie, angel, sweetheart, love, darling, my love, my rose, babe, he hardly ever calls evan by his actual name, only when the topic/situation is very very serious

evan uses bartys name a lot more (and by that I mean barty and not bartemius cause I hc that Barty never EVER uses his full name cause he hates it sm and even gets it legally changed as an adult), but he also call him bee, bat, baby, darling, mon amour

they have a cat w the most outrageously complicated name ever + like 4 reptiles (a ball python, 2 crested geckos and a chameleon methinks (?))

they have a bio daughter (transmasc evan truther here!!! <3) and she’s 2 years younger than luna (and best friends w her)

way way later down the line (when their daughter is 16) they adopt 2 other kids cause barty always had a dream of adopting and/or fostering to get kids out of shitty home life situations like his

(their kids are like fully formed ocs in my brain (except for names cause I suck at naming ocs,,,,,,,) but that’s the base of my happy au family hc for them)

they live in hogsmeade cause barty teaches history of magic at hogwarts (I still can’t decide what Evan does tho probably cause I project so stupidly heavily on to him and I can’t choose a career for myself but shhhhhhhhh)

extremely self-indulgent but evan’s a massive massive Pokémon fan and has been since he was like 9 and into all the aspects (cards, games, manga, anime, etc) whearas barty never was super interested but then evan started convincing him to open packs together and barty got sucked in through the powerful forces of gambling addiction

they’re both super into art (barty likes pottery and any kind of abstraction, evan likes pencil sketching and acrylic landscapes and they both like spraypainting)

I just scrolled back up after writing that last one and holy shit that’s a lot of yapping 💀😭

i like them a super normal amount I promise (could keep going for much much much longer)
