They're the same guy but they envy each other so fucking much. Hal has had such a hard time with the whole robot thing, but Dirk would give anything to give up this inconvenient, uncomfortable flesh. Trade it in for wires or felt anyday. Never have to take the moments to think or worry, just follow programming.

It goes without saying Hal would give anything to taste again. Having to watch Dirk experience food poisioning and feeling a deep burning envy for the ability to vomit. The pain a kind of escape that hes not afforded anymore.

They would trade places in a heartbeat, but the problem is they are already that guy actively being in these situations. There's no point. They believe nothing would change, because they both believe they are the same.
