best part of tgcf is the character arc xl goes on second best part is the tension between tragedy/horror and romance/comedy third best is mu qing and feng xin. hc is kind of extraneous in a lot of scenes and if he wasn't in the book at all I'd probably like it almost as much

#he just tags along in a lot of scenes it's SO annoying #it's weird how much he feels tacked on bc he DOES matter to xl's character arc and he's important in a lot of the plots #and I genuinely don't think xl as a character would be entirely complete without him #but also he's kind of an extra...#by comparison lwj forms such a foundational part of the postres arc of mdzs that I can't rly imagine the story happening without him #not to mention his roles like as close companion to wwx and his thematic role and his role as foil to a bunch of characters like jc and sl #preres MAYBE you could take him out and things would be basically the same bc the plot isn't abt him #but postres all the meaningful character development wwx goes through really requires him #tgcf txp
