ok i need to get this off my chest abt totk's dungeon soundtracks this isnt necessarily a criticism but just a... idk man its confusing hang on

ok. totk's dungeon themes. theyre good im not going to lie they arent my favorite of the series but totk did deliver some good dungeon themes. what i'm confused about is the choice to use the champion's and divine beast's leitmotifs in the dungeons, like using daruks theme and bits of rudania's theme for the fire temple. that's the first that comes to mind cuz thats the one i like best but i think it was especially noticeable to me for the wind temple, the water temple's theme has some similar instrumentation and some very similar sounding phrases and when i see comments or people talking abt the dungeon themes it is very common to see people talk about the champion and divine beast leitmotifs being used.

and like. fine it sounds nice there is an emotional connection there if you have played botw but like. why are their fucking leitmotifs in totk's dungeon themes???

if you give a character or something a leitmotif, then that little string of notes represents that character or location or concept. usage of that leitmotif is therefore intrinsically tied to that character or whatever. this worked out with zelda's theme throughout the series, esp in totk when it's given the instrumentation of the dragon's themes, so that musical phrase at that moment basically says 'zelda, but a dragon' and like. yknow. leitmotif that literally represents something.

i believe the wind temple's theme incorporates some of rito villages theme, and in turn rito village having the same melody as dragon roost island makes sense, that's effectively a motif meant to represent the rito, like the reoccurring zora's domain and goron city motifs throughout the series, or hyrule castle. when characters have themes in past zelda games that play at different times, it means something about the character being referenced. midna's lament using midna's theme to show that this scene is about midna, she is in danger. fi's different themes playing when she is the center of attention or her leitmotif referenced in botw/totk when she literally makes subtle cameos. linebeck's theme only every plays in scenes where he has some sort of big moment or in the final boss theme because it's only fair that the final boss theme include the motif that represents him because he is the final boss. groose's theme shows up various times in his little scenes (and i believe there might be hints of it in later imprisoned themes?? i'd have to check but it would make sense since he's helping)

so... if you reuse a leitmotif that is tied to something, then reasonably that means that the context in which it's being reused is somehow related to or concerning what that leitmotif represents.

but... daruk's theme and some bits reminiscent of rudania's theme play in the fire temple's theme. reasonably, i would hear this and be like, ah, so this has something to do with daruk, or the divine beast? the usage of his character leitmotif suggests that he is related to this somehow. thats... usually the point of using a character leitmotif like was done in the fire temple's theme!

and yet the champions and divine beasts are not so much as referenced in totk's stories, and you can't even try to the point of their themes being used due to the new sages being relatives, because tulin is not related to revali- he doesn't even get the great eagle bow until after the dungeon, and still no reference to revali is made when he gets it.

so then... why are we referencing botw's champions if they do not matter? why not use the sage's leitmotifs in the dungeon themes instead? the dungeons are much more related to the new sages, and it would allow players to become more familiar to that leitmotif, and would further tie the experience to that dungeon with its related sage, instead of tying it to dead characters that mean jack shit to the story of totk.

it's just really weird that they use motifs from the champions and divine beasts, since that won't click for people who didn't play botw, and it just calls back to stuff not important to totk anyways. the divine beasts have literally no relation to the dungeons, the champions are barely even relevant to the world in totk. i get that the leitmotifs were used as like... maybe some sort of extra pre-existing racial connection motifs, but... use the sage's themes? don't use leitmotifs that have absolutely nothing to do with this game or it's story? sure it sounds nice but the meaning behind those leitmotifs make no actual sense in this new context, unless you're trying to suggest that they actually have a different meaning than being the motifs of the characters and locations that were originally what they were used for.

look, im gonna be insufferable and post yet another version- this is actually the first one i made, no floaty fur and his back is like .. open with the spine showing, similar to how i draw demise (though the similarity is purely bc i like that feature, not to connect them), with the mane effect being transparent smoke that emits through the open back- also with the front legs fully colored in to separate them from the others since those are the extra ones

i made the other versions bc i didnt like how the spine looked and didnt work on it further, but looking at it now i dont think its that bad- ... so i added more details (it looks a bit much with the glowing braids but since hes only looking like that when charging magic and the majority of the time it would be the dark braids i feel like its fine)

so, i read your comments and really liked the idea of the glowing mane only when hes attacking- though i have changed it to only be when hes using magic instead, especially longer charging and large range ones, plus i added the details (though the attack examples are still missing)

however .. i still cant decide on which side i like which color best .. (meaning darker upper half and pink on the underside and vice versa)

my hc is that she gets it from when demise swallows her soul, so its a magical scar instead of one from a physical injury, which is why its vaguely shaped like a star. i like to think it glowed and was fading until she got her soul put back into her body. after that i imagine it healing like a normal scar !

i think she has other scars from her journey but i didnt draw them here, just small ones.

not shown bc i dont know how to draw it but i also think her body is a bit weaker from this experience too, so she gets fatigued a lot quicker than she used to #mychronicfatigue. maybe fainting spells also

but yeah those are my thoughts ^_^

this is also one of my favorite updates (and 100% my favorite dialogue in all of ch.1, possibly the whole comic so far) but I'm glad I waited to do a commentary bc I think this is actually really relevant to the latest update

cause like the conversation Loft has with botw Zelda here is very similar to the one he has with Ganondorf, though he's much less snippy during it

I wanted to give Zelda a chance to be bitter and share her grievances with the gods. Her entire story in BOTW is largely about how the legends and the expectations put upon her by them fail not only her personally but the entire kingdom. And yet she's made to feel like it's all her fault.

A lot of his comic focuses on the legacy of the Hero, but I don't want to leave Zelda (or Ganondorf) out of the conversation. The cycle makes victims of all three of them in various ways, and while I can't do everything at once, it's still my goal to explore that. The Zeldas in particular are all in interesting positions as members of the Royal Family, because they're at once always thrown in peril by it with little agency, and expected to be the facilitators of its success as the people with the closest proximity to the gods. Much to think about.

on that note BOTW Zelda is my favorite Zelda. she is my babygirl. she is my everything. I will die a BOTW Zelda defender. we haven't seen the last of her in this comic i promise :-)

okay on to actually analyzing the comic. This top panel is framed like a diptych, two paintings hinged together. these are often (though not always) associated with religious paintings and are often altarpieces. I use a triptych format in the newest update :D sidenote I think it's very cute that some of the Hylia statues in BOTW have been decorated, so i gave her a little flower crown

I imagine praying starts to feel a little strange when you are dating ur god. yeah. Also I think it's interesting that Skyloft seems to mainly worship Hylia, with the other gods being more distant. It makes sense given the whole "she personally raised us up into the sky to save us all" thing. Even though Loft is the very first hero sent on a personal religious quest directly by his goddess, I've always imagined him as kind of,,,,casually devout? In that way that it's all you've ever known. Like obviously his beliefs are deeply ingrained, but he's not as into the formality of it all as other Links we might meet later.

I think about Zelda in that freezing pool on Mt. Lanayru all the time. RAHHHHHHH

I've posted this before but close up of Slate running their errands, the errand being talking to the Great Fairies about if they've noticed anything weird going on lol. I actually wanted to make it a whole update on its own, but I cut it for time and also because. I don't think the Great Fairies really have any information that was necessary other than "no I don't know what's going on". So u get this panel.

I like this shot of that little statue towering over the both of them, and I mimic it a little bit in the new update here. something something about why we build monuments and what they stand for.

Loft still has to believe that Zelda and Slate's negative experiences had to have been some sort of misunderstanding. If Hylia could have helped, she would have. Knowing and loving your goddess on a human level also makes you want to give her the benefit of the doubt.

I actually really love that in BOTW Zelda resents Link for having some sort of access to the divine that she just can't reach. She has her arc about it in the game, but especially now she's come to understand that having the gods' favor is a double-edged sword. Also, that's not really meant to be Peony, but I like the idea that Champion also had an affinity for fairies. :-( Intentionally the same pose as Slate at the fairy fountain, though Slate is so tiny I probably didn't need to bother lol

Ghost Swap @fyeahghosttrick prompt by @youghostandyoutrick: Fandom fusion! Put anyone from the Ghost Trick cast into another fictional universe, as though they originated from that universe. Ghost Trick elements (like Temsik and how ghosts work) can be adapted for the new universe however you see fit.

I went with putting them in the Zelda universe (specifically BotW/TotK, or at least that's where I borrowed some of the outfits from hehe) some design notes + worldbuilding thoughts under the cut because. well I've had some Thoughts hehehe

Lynne's outfit is based on the Royal Guard Set from BotW/TotK, given that detectives are given such status in GT it seemed fitting to have her be a bit more important than a common soldier

Sissel's outfit is based on the Depths Set from TotK, mostly from the hood shape + spooky ghost vibes + the wraps gave me a way to cover his eyes w/o having sunglasses bc I can't remember if they have Fantasy Sunglasses in Zelda

Kamila's outfit is based on Zelda's dress in ALBW, because that's probably my favorite Zelda design + game + I thought she'd look cute :)

Kamila is the princess, Lynne is her personal guard, and Sissel is a ghost that helps Lynne like the Champions in BotW

Not pictured here, but Jowd + Alma are king and queen, Cabanela is also likely a royal guard, and Missle is still a good boy :) (not sure where Yomiel fits into all this but. he's probably There. Somewhere.)

the hourglass lantern Lynne has is actually Sissel's, sort of like a Poe's lantern.

Sissel can heal+revive Lynne if she's downed, like Mipha in BotW

Most people can't see Sissel, but like in canon if he revives them they can see him. His lantern is fully visible though, which is part of why Lynne carries it

something something Rock of the Gods -> Rock of the Goddesses (Triforce??)

I don't know what the quote-unquote "plot" of this would be, but I imagine at least Lynne and Sissel's reasoning for sticking together would be pretty similar to canon (mutual agreement to help each other out with their respective mysteries)

some statues in the depths in totk could be mogmas!!

it looks similar, right????? if this is supposed to represent a mogma, hoo boy the lore we just unlocked.

we know that the mogmas didn’t last long because they aren’t present in Minish Cap. but if the Zonai made statues of them, that obviously means that they were present.

a couple problems with this theory:

- mogmas live on Death Mountain in sksw. if the zonai wanted to create statues of them, why’d they put them below Hyrule Field/Central Hyrule instead of Death Mountain? why swap them out for the Gorons who do live on Death Mountain in many games, but notably not sksw; they’re more like traveling nomads which Sky can find throughout his adventure.

- mogmas have legs????? why indeed yes, this statue depicts a mogma-like creature with legs!! now, i did watch a sksw boundary break video showing what mogmas look like underneath, and it’s obvious the devs didn’t give this much thought/lore because they knew that no player was every going to see that! but does that mean it’s not technically true? no! :D

but all the cool lore revelations!!!!!! if mogmas were present during the time of the Zonai/Imprisoning War, that means that the time that Zelda travels back to in totk was before sksw!! so like… REALLY far back in the past. and that throughout the entire zelda timeline, she was just there up in the clouds as a dragon.

it's hard not to make this all about my nearly full 365 days of unemployment. i have cut a great deal from this wrapup. thank you all for your love and support (often financial!) this year :') it has never been scarier to have no familial safety net and i really, really appreciate all of you relative strangers (i have met very few of you in person!)

highlights of the year: a tomato plant in a five gallon bucket, hotvintagepoll, the eclipse, my new zebrawood desk, throwing my own birthday party (NOT passive aggressive it was very comforting to be in full control), ren faire, the modern zelda games, genshin impact, heist films, naomi novik's temeriare series, Navigational Entanglements by Aliette de Bodard, the Popping Tins newsletter about tinned fish products, new joywave and beyonce and charli xcx and kesha albums, and an actual play podcast focused on critical worldbuilding smart characterization and fun interaction between good friends.

the sort of three broad categories of stuff i talk about in the reading section are articles, comics, and actual books. fairly pleased with my RSS feed, which is filling the twitter hole and also has a separate Real US News tab i can look at in a more controlled manner. people seem to have liked the article/book combo bc reading a book a week is usually kind of a heavy lift for people who are employed. as long as i do either an article or a book i feel like this category is checked off in my brain. i would like to do both more weeks and figure out how to do more concise book reports. i am pleased that people seem to like the couple weeks of giant DNF lists where i briefly state why i did not finish a specific older scifi paperback.

shoutout to @rae-being-naughty for introducing me to one of my favorite new authors, t kingfisher! what a delectable niche. those books go down SO easy. shoutouts also to the temeraire books, Trouble And Her Friends by Melissa Scott (what if neuromancer was good?), Dark Wire by Joseph Cox (nonfiction about the encrypted phone company the FBI shadow-ran) and Witch Hat Atelier.

the OPPOSITE of a shoutout to the most frustrating books i did not finish this year, a fragile enchantment by allison saft (the very weird fantasy meghan/harry fantasy au????) and jennifer dugan's the ride of her life, a cowgirl wlw romance that had some kid pop up in the second chapter and yell about how they shipped the leads and were making a tiktok about it. hello??????? huh????? i had that book on hold for SIX MONTHS. what the fuck did people see in that book???

reading and holding and interacting with a physical hard copy book is so much better for my shattered attention span, and i have giant bookcases full of physical books i desperately want to read, but i read ebooks so much faster. a dilemma that will for sure continue into the new year.

logged almost 169 things on letterboxd this year so far (almost nice). the giant spike is when i watched a a dozen individually loggable betty boop shorts. tasty tasty stats.

saw one entire film (howl's moving castle) in theaters and i do not think i will be doing that again bc (while fun) it was a very anxiety inducing experience.

the trouble with this section is that has been a thorn in my side basically since i started this series, but games are such a part of my life it feels weird NOT talking about them? but talking about video games is difficult bc none of them are very good. i find myself Still a little burned out on them even after almost three years on from the video games job. finding something fun and free on itch or steam is very time-consuming. every time i talk about genshin i feel like i have to caveat it with one million Don't Play Gacha Games warning stickers like the ones that come on cigarettes. and i don't feel like a screenshot of whatever achievement i hunted on genshin in a specific week is very interesting to people.

maybe the solution is to cut this section for a while and have a special bonus add on section every once in a while??? i dunno. would love to know people's thoughts here on how to make talking about/telling stories about the games i play more interesting.

the tuesdayposts as a whole have been both very good and very bad for my mental health, bc i really needed a project to work on to break up the soul crushing monotony of writing cover letters. however writing the tuesdaypost every week was often a very anxiety inducing expereince bc i felt like i didn't do much. or did stuff very unevenly. the "point" of the tuesdayposts is to remind myself every week that absorbing a lot of different things helps me stay on a more even keel. esp in times of great unrest. unfortunately, a year of unemployment.

i saw my siblings twice, managed to actually write and post christmas cards, framed a bunch of shit, discovered a new favorite soup, and did some indifferent gardening and cross stitch.

the making section this year tended to be more lifestyle blogging/what i cleaned. a lot of weeks i did not have Anything in the tank except basic vacuuming and halfhearted wiping counters down.

however??? i managed to post three fics??? two were previously written but at least they are no longer languishing on my harddrive??

this goofy little NFT genderswap blondeyes has the craziest hits to kudos ratio on anything ive ever written.

i really do intend on finishing this cait/fahrenheit 5+1. the stars have not been aligned.

Hii!! ^w^ I adore OoT Zelink because I love doomed romance (Idk why but I headcanon that Zelda dies young 😭), and the story of Ocarina of Time enraptured me even though it was Totk that got me into the fandom. Also my fav characters are the Fierce Deity (if it wasn’t obvious ahaha) and Sheik, so that tracks >v<

And I don’t mind any ships, but what I can’t stand is when non Zelinkers invade Zelink spaces (this only really happens on Twitter and Insta from what I can see?) I see this ESPECIALLY with Malink people, and they always try and argue saying Malink is canon for some reason, and genuinely, there really and truly isn’t enough evidence to say Malink is even remotely canon. Saying that it is relies heavily on confirmation bias. And Zelink for sure is not canon, but Nintendo gave us a lot more Zelink food than anything else implied. The non-canon comic is *chef’s kiss* and in it Link outright ignores Malon because he’s so focused on Zelda. Idt Nintendo would allow the comic to be published like that if Malink was canon ahahah. But I just find the arguments really unnecessary and tiresome imo!

Sidlink people are always cool, and I can vibe with Midlink ppl bc I ship Midzelink 🥰 But Malink people are oddly determined to try and say it’s a canon ship, which is quite goofy imo ahahah 😂 Malon as a character is wonderful, although she’s rather empty and isn’t important to the narrative, so she lacks dynamism and depth. (I prefer Peatrice in terms of a romantic “rival” for Zelda, bc at least that has a bit of ground! 😆☺️) Midna and Sidon are so precious and are actual fleshed out characters, you know? But I enjoy all kinds of ship art! It’s never Malink artists that are the ones starting arguments, it’s always a random man for the most part 😂 And they’re sometimes very aggressive too- so if I had to say there was a ship I disliked, it would be Malink, probably 🤣

actually, this one might be my favorite

its so well put together and i like its structure, not too noisy, not too simple and a little more practical (though it looks a little warm for the desert .. would have been interesting to have the ancient gerudo live in the highlands) i like how the shoulder and arm armor look alot like the voe armor from botw (the pants too .... but the shoes idk, if those are metal AND open theres no wonder hes grumpy if hes got sand in his probably sweaty metal shoes all the time) with the long sleve and fur making him more distinct and regal looking- and while the beard is a little unusal for ganondorf i honestly think it could have worked, he looks very different from his other designs AND connecting more to the gerudo of this era and i like that

but i cant be mad they didnt go for it bc then i would have been even more frustrated that he was written so damn flat in the game and ... what game he was in in general :I

you know im unable to shut up when i have any opinion on zelda (though i try and have thus far succeeded at not commenting on any other concept from the darn book)- i find most totk ganondorf concept art worse than what we got to insulting even (of those i have seen) ..... this one though

much more the one in the background than the one up front, still at least he has the collar and the weapon we saw in the first trailer of things that never happen in the end (like so much else)

Heaptober Day 2: Eyes

Had a lot of fun with this tbh! Some headcanons and more ID below

OK OK. I have no idea how eye genes and inheritance works BUT I don't care I made uo headcanons anyway so ahoy

Marcellus is less purple bc while he is related directly to the Queens he isn't a Princess and I will simply assume that the royal eyes are at least a little magyk yknow? In my mind all special eyes in the SH universe can change a bit depending on the environment. This is why Jen and Cerys both have the royal purple, and why Cerys has a deeper color... and a little bit of greenish mottling in there. They also have the same general eye layout, with the techniques and the golden freckles. Marcellus is far enough back in the family tree that gis look different.

Zelda has the Heap lines in her eyes and is otherwise 100% witchy blue. (this is also supposed to have sky connotations, because of Theo and the Moon and all that) Marwick has a base of her color, but muted with brown and hints of green - because he's very down to earth, and because of Sep.

Marissa has much darker blue, because she cannot stop getting tangled up in darke nonsense. She also has hints of green, because I think under different circunstancesshe could have been an incredible wizard.

And the greens!! Silas is kinda the bluebrint here - his general pattern is handed on to all his sons. Simon would be very close to his, but this is hus darke era, and it shows. Nicko never took magyk that seriously, so he's less bright. Septimus has the Heap pattern, but Marcia's base colors. (Headcanon that @septimus-heap passed on to me that wizard eyes are affected by their teachers!)

Sarah has more of a grassy color, and less lines than Silas, but this muted area around the pupil - that got passed on to all her sons. The main Heaps are geneeally supposed to have very bright nature greens - while Marcia has morw of the Extra Magyk Extra Green going on. She also has some purple and golden flecks in there :)

this is essentially Loft Monologues His Feelings The Update. It was very important to me that the audience understands where Loft's head is at from the get-go. and like listen, sometimes u have to have a bestie debrief even if ur bestie is a dormant sword spirit who can't talk to u. if bonus links was a musical this would be Loft's I want song lol

jokes aside I think Loft comes here to talk to Fi a lot. it makes him feel both better and worse

LOFTS FI IMPRESSION i feel like he used to do this a lot and thought it was so funny and every time Fi would be like. objectively that is not what i sound like. also, peep the textbox pattern!

even though Loft has trouble acclimating to life on the surface, it was important to me to show that it's not all like. angst and doom and gloom. But that's kind of the problem right? things are good, and he feels like this anyway. also I did my best to include most of the young adult skyloft npcs, I feel like the older one have mostly stayed up on Skyloft for now. LAKE TRIP!!

this is a direct reference to this shot from the game. this line of dialogue is an important thing to keep in mind. tbh the entire reason this comic exists is bc i thought too hard about the implications of skyward sword— what if you found out your girlfriend was really your god, who had orchestrated your entire life? wouldn't that make everything feel a little strange, even if you love her more than anything? much to think about

I like the scar through the triforce mark as a kind of symbolic gesture, but there's not really any intended meaning behind the two pieces of the triforce is goes through. feel free to interpret it however u like tho lol

AND THIS SHOT my headcanon is that Loft doesn't actually help much with the early building in Faron. It's partially because he can't- he pushes his body to the limit during his quest, and then completely crashes when it's over, and it takes a loooong time to even start recovering. He spends most of the time sleeping.

But it's also partially because he doesn't actually want to move to the surface. He wants to stay on Skyloft. In my mind it's like. he fought really hard to return to a state of normalcy that doesn't exist anymore, and that's hard to come to terms with. This is Zelda and Groose's project, and while he'll go along with it, he's not that enthusiastic about it. It's a source of tension in their relationship. Combined with Zelda often acting as a mouthpiece for the gods, it starts to grate on Loft that this aspect of his future has also apparently been decided.

tldr groozelink love each other a lot but things are definitely not perfect, and especially not right now

this is actually something I intended to get a little bit more into in ch2, but the chapter kind of. wrote itself away from it. every time I tried to include a scene with it, it felt too much like I was forcing characters to have too many heart-to-hearts too early. we'll get there eventually
