Taylor - civilian identity, system core. strong connection to protecting her immediate friends and family, very passive and willing to put up with abuse. instinctual use of power is to ignore it, allowing bugs in the area to act normally; can control them if necessary but her control is clumsy. Master 2.

Weaver - superhero identity, forms before fic begins as a response to Taylor gaining powers. doesnt initially come up with the name (im not yet certain what she will call herself b4 being named Weaver). believes in fair law and order, willing to make any sacrifice of herself to save others, does NOT expect others to do the same. nonlethal methods of subduing, against killing except for class-s threats. instinctual use of power is using small amounts of bugs to feel out area around her, and connecting threads between everything which she can use to pull enemies off balance, yank objects around, or trap enemies. Skitter - supervillain identity, forms after Weaver joins Undersiders as an undercover operation and Taylor starts to become attached to them (first public debut is bank robbery.) still cares about greater good and keeping the peace, but also cares about living a good life for herself, and is more vindictive, ruthless, and intimidating than the others. ok with killing for the greater good or to protect herself, as well as causing permanent harm to do the same or to prove a point. instinctual use of power is to use large amounts of bugs to scout out areas or track people, and to create swarm-clones. Also not shy about using the wasps, fire ants, etc. in her swarm. Prefers fighting from back and allowing her swarm to do most of the work. Master 7, Thinker 1.

Arsenal - Armsmaster introject, forms around the same time as Skitter. Persecutor-protector; he is agressive and dismissive towards the ideas and plans of the others and may sabotage them because he thinks that they arent as capable as they think, and are likely to fail, thus tries to keep them out of dangerous scenarios. Prideful. Does not have access to Taylor's power; passenger suppresses it completely if he is the only one fronting.

Dragonfly - forms during the meeting between the villains to discuss the ABB's presence; sees herself as a leader, negotiator, and diplomat. becomes much more prominent as the system starts to gain more respect for itself as an influential cape, and as Taylor becomes a warlord responsible for leading and organizing ordinary people. instinctual use of power is purely observational, limited to minor mapping of areas and tracking of key individuals. Master 5, Thinker 1.

TT - Lisa introject, forms around the time Taylor and Skitter join The Undersiders for real. Smug and self-assured. Leans more into the Thinker side of their power; she is most adept in the system at using the smallest amount of bugs she can to covertly map areas or track people, as well as most easily able to process their sensory information, but struggles in combat situations. Master 4 (Thinker 2, Stranger 2).

Antlion - restless, impulsive, emotional, straightforward. forms when they start spending more time with Rachel and is fiercely loyal towards her. prefers being in close quarters in combat as she does not want to be seen as cowardly - instinctual use of power is to gather them around herself, hiding her location and allowing her to intimidate her opponents. Master 5 (Changer 1), Thinker 1.

Passenger - formed by the other system members (primarily TT, Skitter, and Weaver) as a tulpa during the two-year timeskip in an attempt to break down their internal barriers surrounding power use. It doesn't work very well. Passenger is only semi-verbal and, though its power is slightly stronger than the others (longer range and somewhat better control,) it has worse emotional control and is not as rational as the others. largely acts on self-preservation and fight-or-flight instinct. Master 8, Thinker 2

Khepri - name given by external forces as it does not have the wherewithal to name itself. formed by the violent interaction between the actual system and their shard prompted by Amy's modifying of their corona pollentia. you remember speck, its basically just that, the thing that taylor turned into as her shard took over more of her actions. the other system members are all aware and in cocon during the speck-analogue but have only very limited ability to affect Khepris actions. Master/Trump 10, Thinker 5, Stranger 5

when in doubt, craft something

Upon the horizon, the sky was twisting and churning with unnatural colors oozing out of the veil between the realms of imagination, magic and the spirits, and the boundary of the world that the adventurers knew. Sometimes those colors flashed by like lightning, sudden and violent. The sky changed behind it, just as violently. And sometimes it was slow, like the uncomfortable sense that something in the world had gone wrong.

It marked a point where the edge of the world was just that: an edge, a point where physical laws, shaped matter and the primacy of the elements no longer held sway. Past that point, things... dissolved. And past that...

Well, Chopstop mused as she filed down the bore of a two-handed automatic cannon. That was were other things came out. There were the spirits of the other world, who were not inherently malicious: not even spirits of pain or loss. They were not cruel, they simply did what was in their nature to do.

But then, Chopstop thought as the skull of a dead demon leered by her side, hateful even in death. There were other things that could find a way through. You could negotiate with spirits, and it was a moral duty to appease them. But demons just wanted to kill everything.

It was certainly giving the predators in the party plenty to eat. Chopstop turned towards Tia, who was sitting beside her and apparently whittling something. She’d digested that demon, of course, and coughed up the skull. That was unusual; she very rarely digested anything. At most she ate things and while they were gone, for a while, they’d pop up later. Maybe spit out as magical ammunition or reforming, and if they WERE digested, it was essentailly ‘borrowing’ their physical bodies into her mass, while their souls went off somewhere inside her. She’d heard it described as the ‘Gut Zone’, or the ‘Butt Zone’, depending on what part of Tia started wobbling as if there really were people in there.

She’d been in there herself. She remembered seeing a vast city, of black flesh shaped into a facsimile of wobbling pseudo-stone, extending on larger than the observable world. She didn’t know if it was a physical place within Tia, some sort of abstract dream-world. Maybe it was both.

But actually being digested by her was atypical. She just seemed naturally suited to fighting things as destructive and mean as demons.

“Whatcha working on, there?” Chopstop asked.

Tia held her work aloft for inspection. Chopstop leaning in to inspect it, and Tia’s gaze briefly flicked towards Chopstop’s abundant, teeming cleavage. Her expression didn’t change, though. Simply helpless to at least notice dark green boobs of the perfect size and shape.

They both refocused. In Tia’s hands, proffered to Chopstop, it looked something like a staff. It was unfinished, and clearly magical; one end of it was apparently dissolving into raw magical energies, or at least that part of it was unfinished. She needed to put more into it, to finish giving it shape. The whole thing was a faint blue color, glassy crystal webbed with dark stone or perhaps iron. Calling it a ‘staff’ was perhaps a bit too vague, it was more like a thick pillar that happened to be the right shape for Tia’s hands to be swung like a staff.

It also looked like a bunch of arms, all wound together. Multiple arms bound together, twisting together and their fingers interlacing like a gesture of companionship.

Tia took a free hand and put it along the staff, pumping more magical energy into it; she huffed and grimaced with both physical strain and creative exhaustion. More magic gushed out of her and into it, and her hand shaped it, first with a gentle modulating wave, and then striking it, hammering substance that was suddenly physical into shape. She did this, over and over, until a short handle appeared from it.

“Kind of looks like a big tonfa now,” Chopstop observed.

Tia beamed. “Yeah! I can swings it at things, y’know?”

Chopstop watched as Tia continued to work at it. Hammering it into shape, making it elongate more and more. She began to realize something; she’d known Tia for a long time, since she was a young artificer hanging out with Tia’s daughter Nevnir, and then throughout much of her professional life. She’d slept with Tia for the last few years of her life, vowed to follow her clan’s path in battle and warfare. Her own immediate ancestors had been among those who had followed her, at the beginning of the Horde’s lifetime. She was planning to marry her. But now she realized that when it came to the fine details of her, she knew very little about her.

“So what are you making this for?” Chopstop asked. She winced as Tia panted with exhaustion. “You don’t... look very good.”

“Hrm, it is being fine. I gets... it’s lots of work, making magic thingies.” Tia shrugged, with a magnificent wobble to her enormous breasts. “But is important.”

“Why’s that?”

“So’s I don’t lose neat powers.”

“...I’m sorry?”

Tia held onto the staff, and she resonated with its power; something distinct and part from her, Chopstop realized. Tia’s power template shifted, and then, the nature of that power activated: magical energy solidified around her, thickening and taking on new shape, and fully resolved into the shape of six additional arms floating just around Tia, detached from her body. They looked very much like her normal arms, but more refined in shape, and almost mechanical in nature or perhaps heavily armored; ornate, with the same kinds of decorations as the staff. They were big, too; they were larger than Tia herself, and that was saying a lot.

Chopstop blinked at the translucent, glowing masses of power. Mostly black, with some green undercurrents flowing like water. “That’s a new one!”

“It’s a little bit of my cloning power, a little bit of some astral projection... oh, that’s hard to do for me, I don’t know HOW i made that one, too. A whole lot of things! Too much to keep on all at once.” As if familiar with the way she worked, Tia said, “I can’t keep powers on all the time, yeah?”

“You can’t?”

Tia blinked. “You didn’t know?”

“Nope!”

“Oh. Well.” Tia continued working on the staff, bringing more of it to life. “I gets, um. Full. Like full belly but much harder.” She frowned, either with trying to put the whole concept into words, or a tricky element of the staff. “Mine powers, they’re always changing. Don’t always want to just drop them, you know? I eats things, i turns them into powers, but they don’t stay. They gets... processed, I guesses. So I eat more stuff, I get different powers. I mixes it all up, and I get new powers on the spot for a little while. I don’t know hows to make them stay.”

She kept working for a bit. “So, a while ago, I figured something out. I can take a power I made, and turn it into something. Like fancy weapon! Like this! And then I can use it, and summon that power all over again!”

“Ooh, that’s amazing.” Chopstop grinned at her as the sextuple arms winked out. “I always say crafting stuff is more useful than just having all the powers in the world.”

“Yeps! I thinks my powers... its all about what I can get in the moment, you know? But sometimes, that won always works out for me. I never get to keep powers. I can get ways to make more, or combine what I have, but anything I get, I change too much for it to stay.”

“So then, this is a workround? You’re... what, putting that power into a physical artifact you can use indefinitely, without having to worry about burning the power out?”

“Yeps!”

Lotor Rewrite

I’ve given my thoughts on how horrendously Prince Lotor’s character arc was handled. I’ve reblogged a couple posts that sum up my thoughts on the matter. https://blue-bower.tumblr.com/post/185061129226 https://blue-bower.tumblr.com/post/185061352401 https://blue-bower.tumblr.com/post/182574536376 So, this is going to be my personal re-write of the end of season 6, and the events following in seasons 7 and 8. This is not going to be a rewrite of the entire last 2 seasons; I'm just focusing on Lotor (and Allura later on). There's just so many forced/rushed plot points and distasteful choices on the writers' part that it would take an entire essay to break everything down. But ultimately I feel like Lotor - and at the very end of the series, Allura - were given the worst treatment of any character. Also, keep in mind that it’s been four years since I’ve watched the series in full, so I may not be remembering things 100% accurately. But frankly I do not feel like returning to season 6-8 again just to flesh out a headcanon. This also isn’t a fully set-in-stone fanfic or script, just a general gist of ideas. I have several ideas for potential rewrites with various branching paths.

There are two main ways that I believe the end of season 6 could be revamped.

In the first rewrite, the plot twist with the dead Alteans in the lab never happens. A lot of people saw it as a very ham-fisted way of adding conflict for the hell of it. There could (and imo, should ) still be an Altean colony founded by Lotor, and Romelle would still be a character that is introduced to the Paladins at some point. But I feel like the only thing she would really contribute - at least in season 6 - is siding with Allura in trying to warn Lotor about the dangers of messing with quintessence. If she had a bigger part in the last couple seasons, I personally would have liked to see more of her learning magic and fighting from Allura.

In my opinion, there was already a plot element in place that could have just as easily led to a conflict and possible falling-out between Lotor and the Paladins: Giving the Galrans access to unlimited quintessence. It baffles me that no-one at any point even questioned this, or tried to warn Lotor of the possible ramifications of handing over this kind of power to a power-hungry empire. They just went along with it. So I think they should have steadily built up the unease with going through with this plan, ultimately leading to a battle over whether the gate should be destroyed. It could still be revealed that Lotor did have the ulterior motive of starting his own empire, using quintessence for his own gain. But it would still paint Lotor as a sympathetic antagonist, who truly believed he was doing the right thing.

If the twist with the Altean colony & lab has to happen, then at the very least, it should have been given more time to be resolved. The audience should have been given more answers.

So in this rewrite, the confrontation with Lotor and Romelle still happens. She explains what she and Keith saw, she explains her brother's death and sees Lotor attempting to cover up his death. Lotor still looks like a deer in headlights, but also seems to look guilty. He doesn't deny the facility existing, however. Cue his ass still getting knocked out by Allura. 

Whether the facility happens or not, season 6 still leads to Voltron and Lotor confronting each other at the rift gate. In the first scenario, Lotor tries to reason with them; he claims that under his new leadership, the Galrans will not be using the rift for evil purposes. In the second scenario, Lotor pleads with Allura to let him explain himself; that he never intended to kill Alteans. Allura and the Paladins are conflicted on what to do, and whether to believe him. Most importantly, though,

Allura does not compare him to his shitty abusive father.

If anything, I think she may point out that he's actually a lot more like Honerva than he's willing to admit. It still stings, but doesn't send him into a violent frenzy or a cringeworthy monologue fitting of a Saturday morning cartoon villain. Allura tries to compromise with him; she says she'll come with him to the Altean colony if he destroys the gate. He refuses.

I can see either of these rewrites branching into two potential scenarios: A solo battle between Lotor and Voltron like we saw at the end of season 6, or an interruption to their confrontation: A fleet of Galran ships appearing in an attempt to claim both the phase gate and Voltron. Lotor and the Paladins are forced to cooperate, and get into a battle with the Galrans. Lotor realizes the only way to get them to back off is to destroy the gate, but he also tells the paladins that his ship can phase into the Quintessence field at will - which prompts Voltron to do the same. He convinces them to phase there with him after they destroy the gate.

In either of these conflicts, Lotor starts to lose control of himself in the Quintessence due to his stress and heightened emotions. In a rage, he starts phasing in and out of the quintessence field in order to attack the Galran fleet outside, despite his own advice on staying hidden. The Quintessence starts messing with his mind, making him start to go power-mad (because let's face it, this scene is still hot).

The Paladins try to get through to him, and Lotor fights off the darkness that corrupted his father. But it isn't enough. Voltron is forced to fight him, and blasts him into unconsciousness.

And instead of leaving him to fucking rot in the quintessence field, they manage to save him in time.

Mortally wounded, they place him in a stasis pod. It's going to take him a while to recover, but it's clear that the quintessence is healing him - and quite possibly making him undead like his parents.

In the meantime, Allura wants Romelle to take her to the colony (or the research facility if that plot point stays), but Romelle keeps refusing, saying it's too hard for her to go back - not to mention the fact that travelling there is extremely dangerous and has the effect of warping time - plus it's imperative that Voltron focuses on undoing the damage done by Lotor creating a rift in spacetime. 

I see most of season 7 playing out as normal, since it mainly focused on the Paladins fighting for Earth. I feel like we should have gotten a season 9, because there was just too much going on in season 8 and not enough time to tie up loose ends. The main plot point I would change is Lance’s confession. He does still confess his love to her, but acknowledges that she may not reciprocate it. And she doesn’t. She tells him that she’s just not in a place to move on yet, or pursue another relationship. And he respects her decision.

After Lotor recovers, he isn't quite the same. He seemingly hasn't been corrupted the way his parents were, but his Altean marks are now permanently glowing bright purple, and his eyes are glowing light yellow, mirroring the vision that Honerva had of him.

The others reveal that everyone's actions in the Quintessence had altered time, and two years have passed. He feels remorseful for his actions, but also angry that the Paladins didn’t listen to him. They nearly get into a fight with him because he is still somewhat unstable, and very clearly carrying a massive amount of power within him due to the quintessence, putting him on par with Honerva’s abilities. Allura demands him to take her to the colony, against Romelle's wishes. Lotor’s powerful magic enables them to transport the castle/ship directly to the colony; something they weren’t able to do before because of the massive amount of spacial distortion coming from that region. And again, depending on whether the facility is kept, it can go one of two ways.

They arrive at the colony, and it’s clear that the Alteans don’t worship the ground he walks on the way they did before. Not only do his glowing eyes remind them of Zarkon, but Romelle has been sowing the seeds of distrust in some of the Alteans since the beginning. I know a lot of people were expecting Romelle to be outed as a traitor, but personally, I don’t really see her as the type to try and frame him. I just believe she genuinely disrusts him because of what Galrans did to Alteans in the first place, and she doesn’t feel comfortable with him declaring himself as their new ruler. But hey, maybe there could be a twist that Romelle lied about the facility all along? Some food for thought. But the combination of genuine unease about the half-Galran, and the testimony of what happened between him and Voltron, makes it clear to Lotor that he no longer has their complete trust. If the facility stays: When they arrive at the colony, there is almost immediate distrust and maybe even hostility toward Lotor. As it turns out, before Romelle returned to the Paladins, she told other Alteans what she saw that night her brother died. He tries to talk them down, explain that what he was doing, he did for the sake of Alteans and their future. Some of the Alteans don’t believe Romelle to begin with; others want to banish Lotor. Since he can’t persuade the masses to believe him, he tells Allura to come with him. When they arrive, Allura sees the chambers that Romelle described. When asked about Romelle's brother again, Lotor explains that he tried to save him, and that he never intended to kill the Alteans. He only wanted to harvest a partial amount of quintessence, because it would be the key to locating Oriande. This would make sense as to why he specifically needed quintessence from Chosen Alteans. But somewhere along the lines, something went wrong with the process. Lotor attempted to cover up the deaths, partially out of shame, but also because he knew Romelle already didn't trust him and didn't want more reason for her to lead a revolt against him. Though he feels remorse, Allura calls him out on his bullshit: Covering up the tragedy was a cowardly move. The consequences of Lotor always being the type to leave unfavorable outcomes in the past and keep moving forward have finally caught up to him, and now it’s his responsibility to face his mistakes. At the very least, he gives the Alteans’ bodies a proper burial. The arc ends on a somber note. Lotor is not a hero, nor a villain. He is the culmination of the tragic life that he had been forced to live; for better and for worse.

After this point, it's up in the air as to how the last season (or two) could be rewritten. I can still see a plot with Honerva trying to recruit Alteans to her side in the time span that Lotor was gone, manipulating them into believing that Lotor would have wanted them to continue Honerva’s experiments, and to fight Voltron in revenge for what they did to him. But ultimately, Lotor would confront them and force them to surrender.  All I know for sure is that, before the final endgame battle, Lotor would sacrifice himself for Voltron and to protect the universe. Likely in a very intense, emotional battle against his mother. I know that the most ideal outcome would be for him to stay alive, marry Allura, and rule the new Altean colony together. But this series has never been a stranger to death and the theme of sacrifice. If done well, I think a heroic sacrifice - especially from a character that was previously a villain - can have an extremely positive impact on a story. Maybe, in a scene mirroring his first encounter with the White Lion on Oriande (maybe Honerva has taken possession of the White Lion instead of just destroying it?), he would realize that fighting won’t do any good anymore. He’s forced to surrender. And in doing so, frees the white lion, the massive amount of quintessence within him, and all of Oriande. Honerva no longer holds power over the Alteans. And in a tragic sense, it means that she can no longer be accepted by Alteans either.

I’ve been very back and forth on whether or not Allura would still die in the end. I completely understand the fanbase’s frustration with the decision to kill her off. It felt very gross for PoC fans to see a main PoC character die in such an unceremonious manner. It felt like a cheap way for them to pay homage to the fact that Allura dies in the original series. But like I said, if done well, the theme of heroic sacrifice will leave a positive lasting impact on a series. On top of that, Allura has been shown since the beginning of the series to be an extremely self-sacrificing character. She was willing to put her life on the line on many occasions; and I almost feel like the scene with her surrendering to the white lion was foreshadowing her ultimate fate. If Allura does stay alive, then I feel like she would become queen of the new Altean colony, but would still leave on diplomatic missions across the universe. Altea IS NOT RECOVERED after all the space-time bullshit. The universe doesn’t just magically overlook complete time paradoxes to bring back dead planets. Allura and the Alteans have long come to terms with the fact that they will never get their original home back, but they can start anew. But, if Allura does die, then it damn well be a goddamn Iron Man from End Game moment. No cheap off-screen Deus Ex Machina, no half-assed goodbyes. Her sacrifice would leave a lasting impact through the universe/multiverse. We’d need a solid full episode of the Paladins (AND CORAN BECAUSE HOW THE FUCK DID THEY LEAVE HIM OUT OF REACTING TO HER DEATH) mourning her passing. Truthfully, the ultimate reason I believe they both might die is because I’d want to keep the final image of the series (before all the epilogue stuff). It’s such a profoundly beautiful image that perfectly encapsulates the sacrifices that Allura and Lotor made in order to bring peace to the universe. 

And that’s obviously meant to be Lotor right next to her. The figure is purple. You can see his hair, boots, even the outline of his skirt thing. Why would they put this in if Lotor was always intended to end up as a villain? The fact that they kept that silhouette after treating his character arc so poorly makes it clear to me that he was meant to have more of an overall impact on the story, but was ultimately thrown to the wayside just so the writers could go “WhAt A tWiSt!!!”

And that about wraps it up. Like I said, there isn’t one set storyline that I have in mind, because I have a few different ideas. IMO literally any path the story could’ve taken would be better than what we were given.  If anyone has any suggestions or feedback, feel free to comment/reblog and add your thoughts. Again, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve watched the series in full, so there may be some key moments I’m forgetting. What would you change?

Pinehead Headcanons: Oscar’s Love For His Rose

While I understand that Ruby is down in Mantle dealing with the evacuation, a part of me would still love for her to somehow wind up back up in Atlas in time for Oscar’s inevitable brawl with the Fake Rose. I want it for the obvious soap opera moment with the “evil twin”.

Y’know how those soap operas would always toss in some drama involving an evil doppelganger of one of the main characters targeting their love interest out of spite and revenge?

 Somehow I just can’t shake the image of Fake Rose Neo kissing Oscar or trying to kiss Oscar long enough for him to let his guard down for Neo to sneakily snatch the Relic away from him; just as Ruby rounds the corner and catches them in the act.

This will most likely not happen in the actual canon but, it’s funny to think about. Especially when I imagine the aftermath of Ruby low-key being salty and possibly just a smidge bit jealous that someone else got to kiss Oscar; especially when it was another girl using her face.

Plus the main reason I want Ruby to be present for Oscar’s clash with the Fake Rose is to see whether or not my Pinehead assumptions of Oscar unlocking his semblance to protect and/or save Ruby would come true. Not to mention that I would love to see a moment where Oscar is caught between his true Rose and the Fake Rose; forced to figure out which is which.

Or perhaps…it’s a case where Oscar is fighting Neo on his own but she uses Ruby’s form for the entire fight to mess with Oscar and for some reason Oscar finds it difficult to fight his opponent when she’s wearing the face of the girl he cares about. But eventually, Oscar is able to steel himself up---probably with Oz’s encouragement from within his mind urging him to look inside himself and know who stands before him---and see through Neo’s disguise. He knows she’s not Ruby. She may wear her face and look back at him with the same beautiful silver eyes that caught his gaze the first time he met her, but Neo wasn’t Ruby. She wasn’t Oscar’s true Rose and once he realized that, let’s say…this is the point where Oscar unlocks his semblance and shatters Neo’s Illusions.

This justifies why I really want Oscar’s semblance to be Nullification or some kind of ability that cancels out the effects of another’s semblance.

I also want to toy with the concept of Oscar’s semblance enabling him to permanently stop someone from using their semblance; at least while they are standing within range of him; for the nod to Princess Ozma from the Wizard of Oz series who was able to cast a de-aging spell that kept the People of Oz from aging unless they left Oz.

I’m just imagining Neo trying to use her semblance again on Oscar only to realize in horror that her powers no longer work. At least they no longer work so long as she is within range of Oscar whose semblance cancels hers out, rendering her powerless against him.

This is why I want this to be Oscar’s hidden power. Not only for the reference to his fairy-tale inspiration but also because this is the type of power I can expect others to be envious of, as Ruby commented. Having someone on your team who cancels out other people’s semblances and prevents them from using them while in range of that person---that’s an amazing ability to have. Then again, this is only my views on that.

Unlike the Little Prince who didn’t get to reunite with his beloved rose in the end, I like the idea of Oscar reuniting with Ruby following his fight with Neo and the People of Mantle are safe up in Atlas and the two share another moment where Oscar either flashes Ruby another one of his classic soft looks that’s only reserved for her or…in a move that he’s never done before, Oscar embraces Ruby, catching her off guard in a welcoming hug while whispering happily in her ear how genuinely happy he was to see her again meaning that he was just relieved to be back with his Rose and not some kind of imposter. Y’know what I mean?

It’d be interesting if his fight with Neo helps Oscar to see how much Ruby means to him.

Ironically, in Japanese mythology, fox spirits are known for being tricksters and shapeshifters. Neo is able to change her form due to her illusions semblance similar to fox spirits. So funnily enough, Neo sort of represents the Fox in Oscar’s Little Prince story but not in the way I pegged it.

In the Little Prince story, it was through the Fox and its teachings that the Prince was finally able to understand his feelings toward his Rose. The Fox helped the Prince to realize the value of his Rose to him and his responsibility to her. I think I owe an apology to @ezroar​. Once upon a time, you asked me if Neo could’ve been the Fox in Oscar’s Little Prince story and at the time, I told you I disagreed with that theory since I more felt that Nora embodied the Fox’s personality and message than Neo.

But now, given what was teased in the last episode, Neo might end up playing the role of both the Fake Rose and the Fox to Oscar; at least by my assumptions. It’d be interesting if following his clash with Neo, much like the Prince, Oscar’s takeaway from the fight is the full realization of how much he values Ruby; how truly important she is to him and from this, Oscar gains a newfound motivation to do everything in his power to always support Ruby because not only does he believe in her but he also genuinely loves her; flaws and all. Thus, it changes the way Oscar looks to Ruby moving forward.

If romance is in the cards for the Rosegardening Rosebuds, it’d d be pretty sweet if that’s what Ruby ends up falling love with Oscar for---because of how much he is able to understand her and support her because of it.

Like it’s a scenario where Oscar sees Ruby’s faults and while he may challenge her on her stances from time to time, he doesn’t make it his goal to belittle her for feeling the way she feels or her mistakes. And even in moments where he is forced to show a little ‘tough love’ with her; particularly when he senses she’s not being completely truthful, it’s done in a way to get her to be honest with herself about how she feels.

I’m just going to be upfront about my stance on this---part of my reason for supporting the Rosegarden ship, both as a close friendship and a potential romance is because I believe Oscar would be a great partner to Ruby. While they don’t share any history from the Beacon days as Ruby does with her other friends, to me Oscar’s connection to Ruby is unique. Their rapport with one another and the way he engages with her and shows support of her; particularly in moments of conflict feels different from the support she receives from her other friends. Basically what I’m saying that the Rosegarden bond is special in its own way; whether platonic or something much stronger.

 I just want to see Oscar realize his love for Ruby but his understanding of his feelings for her is handled with the same level of maturity as we’ve already seen from Oscar. 

His love for his rose doesn’t really change his behaviour and treatment towards Ruby. Oscar doesn’t become a bumbling awkward butt around Ruby. But rather Oscar becomes more motivated to be more responsible for looking out for her well-being; much like the Little Prince.

“People have forgotten this truth. But you mustn’t forget it. You become responsible forever for what you’ve tamed. You’re responsible for your rose.”

How to Do Affiliate Marketing

It could be written “How can I tell folk about this new product or service and earn money doing it”

Remember back in school, when you delivered the morning paper to the neighbourhood, sometimes there would be a flyer from the local takeaway inserted in the paper. Or, as happened to me,  the circus came to town and someone from the show turned up at  my TV shop one morning , He offered me a few free tickets if I would hand out the circus flyers to all my customers and put a circus poster in the window.

How many times have you noticed some new product that your neighbour bought and you asked about where you can get one, or maybe the other way around – “hey, nice sneakers, where did you buy those?”

These are all examples , that are or could be used to gain a commission or “kick back” for increasing sales. All of the above of course are done “Off line” . With the internet came the opportunity to sell to the whole world , getting huge audiences to look at your products.

So Online you first look for an affiliate program. Many big shops like Wallmart, B&Q, Amazon have affiliate programs that are free to join.  Some of them outsource the affiliate program admin to Affiliate Specialists like Affiliate Window or CJ Affiliates. Usually if you Google “affiliate program” + name of the store, you’ll be able to find it easily.

Once you are a member, they will give you your own Affiliate Link . You simply promote, including this link in your articles and Adverts  some product or service belonging to the owner in exchange for a commission, once you successfully make a sale.

To make the process better, promote your article and test versions of  the Ads until you find the best one.

Actually there is another simpler form of Affiliate marketing, called CPA (cost per action) where you only have to provide LEADS, not even make the sale!  Very easy, can be very lucrative. More on this later

Examples of Affiliate Marketing

These are  easy to find  all over the web. Ever seen those boxes at the end of a magazine blog article?

At first glance they look like articles, but of course these are ads, more exactly they are Native Ads. They don’t stand out as Ads, plus the headlines are usually extraordinary, making them highly clickable.  Advertisers are getting really sneaky. They can check your IP address and include some relevant content, lets say you are in Kentucky USA, this can be made to trigger a Headline “ Kentucky Woman First to Win Over $4,000,000 in lottery” or “ How Kentucky Woman makes $4000 a day doing this…”

I wouldn’t advocate such things, but just notice them next time you’re reading online, you will be amazed how often it happens.

Whats the Purpose of an Advert?

The answer  most people give is “ to sell stuff” . No I would argue the purpose is simply to get your attention. The selling is done on the bridge page and Sellers own product page or VSL ( video sales letter) which is a very popular method at the moment.  One of the most successful marketers today Gerry Crammer makes simple images like hand drawn faces or anything out-of-the-ordinary a giant squid on a beach for example and is responsible for tens of thousands of dollars in sales.

What Kind of Ad Works Best?

Just do what is already working.  Pioneers are great, but you only hear about the few that are successful, not the majority, who lost a ton of money trying a new method , then gave up.

What kind of Product is Best to Promote?

Sell what is selling NOW. Here we will have to do some research. Google trends is a good tool to check for product popularity. One fairly easy strategy is to follow the native ads, in the example click through to the end, find out which products are being sold. There is one simple truth here, no one pays for ads, continuously, unless they are making money.

Next, find the products home page. Look up the amount of traffic ( web visitors ) that page is getting, one great , free resource to use is similarweb.com, for which you can sign up for a free account. Type in your product page address and see how much traffic they are getting, where it is being referred from ( eg Facebook ads, Bing Ads….) and what country are these visitors from. You now have all that is required  to start a successful ad campaign going.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Actually Work?

This is one example scenario, our user is on Facebook, sees an ad for some products he is interested in, he clicks the ad and is taken to an Affiliate bridge Page where there are more details, like price, size, color etc finally he clicks to buy and is taken to Amazon on a link which has our Affiliate ID on it, so Amazon recognises our sale and rewards us with a commission.  There are simpler ways and more sophisticated ways to make an affiliate link, but this is the basic model that most marketers use.

Direct Linking

Why bother going to a bridge page I hear you ask. Why not go straight to the Offer-Page from the Ad? Well in most advertising scenarios, the ads are seen on big platforms like Facebook, Google, YouTube etc. They all have their own Terms and Conditions one of which is usually No Affiliate Links. In most cases it would be ok, if you are promoting your own book, for instance. But promoting slimming pills – definitely would not, in fact Facebook has become very intolerant of any such links and is very likely to ban your ad account permanently! Anything to do with weight loss, any images even slightly hinting at too much exposed skin is also likely to be banned. Facebooks ad industry is huge and they are top  dog…. at the moment and they wield a powerful sword over their advertisers.  Advertisers  love FB because they have so  much demographic information available to laser target the potential customers.

I note that This month saw Australia put a limitation on Facebook as regards ads , so this might be an indicator of the way things will go in the future.

So that is basically why we should use a bridge page. The linking to the product then takes place OFF Facebooks page, so your account is safe again. The bridge page should be totally congruent with the subject , so a  slimming product could be linked from within a Bridge Page about “How to Maintain good  health when on a diet” for example. This avoids direct mention of anything medical or Weight loss oriented.

Whats in a link?

The links take our visitor to the next place, so part of the link is an HTML ‘anchor’ which has the web address in it. The rest is usually unique and has our Affiliate ID, this is sometimes disguised, just in case someone tampers with the link to divert the sale commission. Eg.

Here the offer vendor is Clickbank and our ID is hidden along with the product code in the bit before “.hop.” This link has an extra tracking section ( tid ) on the end, used to distinguish this offer from other offers.  We can make use of this when setting up our tracking software.

Affiliate Disclosure

The FTC Federal Trade Commission requires that you disclose the fact that you make a commission with each sale on your site, so make sure it is there. As everyone is obliged to do this, its no longer a disadvantage to see this on a website.

Which  Platform is Best for Promoting my Products

This depends on your own preference in most cases, although videos on YouTube are superb for anything visual or explaining “how to do…..” if it’s a practical matter like component assembly. However, videos can be included in a blog easily, so you get the benefit of the visitor being able to skip through to the part that he or she is interested in , quickly and include a lot of detail in graphs, lists, links to other sites, images, coding, downloads and many other things.

YouTube’s algorithm is simpler than Google’s. YouTube videos will rank more easily if you include the right tags, tags are a big help and the main way YouTube searches work. If  you are going to use YouTube as your platform, install Tube Buddy or Vid  IQ in your browser. Either of these will allow you to find out which tags are in all your competitors videos.

Although YouTube videos rank quicker, at the moment Google is still  putting blogs in the majority of the top 10 for each search  result (serp) . It is well worth the effort of writing many articles, which will  rank for many search terms and you will appear in multiple sets of serps for your search term or keyword.

Relevance is the key. If you want to sell tents, write about all sorts of tents, tents for high temperature, low temperature, windy conditions, waterproof materials used in tents, price points on your selection of tents, durability  of tents , cover the subject thoroughly.

Even if you don’t use Amazon directly, many affiliates  have stopped since the recent downturn in commissions from Amazon, at the height of the first Covid lockdown, Amazons profits rose tremendously and they decided they did not need so many affiliates. Amazon does provide us with amazing research tools though.  Their products are arranged so you can easily compare similar ones and then promote them direct through the manufacturers own affiliate programs . Amazons Best Selling category, is so useful to pick good  products to promote. Amazons reviews often tell of  particularly good or bad lines.

How to start Affiliate Marketing without investment using Free Traffic

Is that a real thing?  Yes, but for long term products.  All of this article so far has relied on paid Advertising- which works instantly and you get the results instantly.

It takes so long to get a website ranking well enough – in the top 10 on page one, for a search term. That is will only work for long term things. One exception to this is Pinterest traffic. It IS possible to build up a Pinterest account fast, so you’re getting that traffic flowing. But it only works in certain niches , great for USA traffic and feminine type products , although this too is changing slowly. I wrote an article outlining a Pinterest strategy on this blog.

My own first success was with Halogen Ovens. I built up  a website with a page per review plus comparison tables and other pages devoted to maintenance and recipes. It became very popular with several number one positions for various search terms. All the products were from Amazon  making research very easy and quick. I even expanded the site to cover UK and US products.  One  month of solid work on the site, gave me  a good few years of income, it still earns a little even now 6 years  on.

So – don’t expect anything other than evergreen products like kitchen appliances, household cleaners and maybe financial products to last long  enough to make it worthwhile building up a blog.

Free traffic is marvellous. For beginners in IM it is usually the chosen route, as mistakes with anyone inexperienced with Ad accounts can be very costly. Also the results with free traffic from Google will last a long time ; But with a lot of products changing rapidly, ads are really the only way to get your affiliate funnel up and running fast  enough to make a good return.  The reason many big Aff marketers use funnel builders, rather than the basic wordpress editor, is because they need the pages up very quickly to take advantage of new offers.

Does Affiliate Marketing Still Work

Yes, absolutely. Many marketers are very successful once they find their own favourite niches and have some experience. Four, Five and even Six figure per year profits from Aff Mktg is totally possible

Rage Breaking Point: A couple of key moments in Act III qualify. The first is Peridot being triggered in Chapter 6 by seeing (the presumed) White Diamond’s neck and immediately thinks of the nature of her own Tricked to Death scenario which has permanently messed with her life in ways she still can’t comprehend. She holds back for a while, but the moment she doesn’t have to escort any teammates, she goes completely Ax-Crazy with an obsession of slicing open White Diamond’s neck. Fast-forward a couple of chapters where Pumpkin is killed, and Peridot completely loses it. She’s invoking destruction of a much larger scale this time, as it ends up not only compromising an already-dying Homeworld, but tears its own atmosphere to shreds.

Rape Leads to Insanity: It nearly did. While Peridot managed to overcome her own instinctive urges to just accept, embrace, and enjoy being regularly subjected to this by the higher-caste gems, she couldn’t completely shut down her body’s urges that were awakened by her Near-Rape Experience with Jasper. She opted to deal with that herself, though Peridot couldn’t get Jasper out of her mind no matter how hard she tried at the time. The experience also all but completely shattered her identity as The Sociopath with far more ambition than a Peridot should ever have. She also no longer resisted pain as well as she once did, which was what Peridot was originally lauded for in the first place.

Rapid-Fire “No!”: Peridot’s panicking devolves into this when she learns from White Diamond that she emerged with a shard from Yellow Diamond embedded in her gemstone, making her a peridot-diamond hybrid.

Razor Wind: What is primarily conjured from Peridot’s Heroic BSoD-charged Angst Nuke, due in part to her Death Wail that Peridot constantly screams out.

Really 17 Years Old: Played with. Peridot refuses to tell anyone her age, as she’s going out of her way to fit in with the rest of her fellow gems who are Really 5,000+ Years Old (and often exceed that a great amount). Being the only Era 2 gem, however, makes it obvious that she can’t possibly be over 5,000 years old, and most of the Crystal Gems don’t think Peridot even breaks 1,000. The gems closer to her, like Amethyst, don’t believe she’s even in the 100s.

Amethyst ends up being correct, tying with Greg on the betting pool regarding Peridot’s age that she does reveal in Act II’s chapter (but only to Garnet via her Video Will). It turns out Peridot is really 13, making her younger than Steven. 

Rebellious Spirit: Per canon, she gained this after her first Heel-Face Turn long before GA started. By the time GA starts, this is yet another Up to Eleven trait Peridot has, and largely what fuels her power as a Determinator. More prominent in Act III since she is an authority figure throughout Act I and isn’t present in Act II. But when she’s with White Diamond… played oh-so straight.

Recruited from the Gutter: Per canon, Peridot was basically Left for Dead after failing her mission and was lost and alone on Earth until that fateful day when she got desperate and resorted to kidnapping Steven straight out of his bed… although in GA, while this is referenced a lot, there’s more emphasis on Peridot’s identity, and how Steven saw signs of it even before she was captured by the Crystal Gems, which was what compelled him to free her from the Burning Room in the first place.

Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Lapis’, Steven’s, and 5XF’s Blue.

Reformed Bully: As a working-class gem on Homeworld, Peridot bordered on Complete Monster territory towards her fellow kin. Then she met Jasper, Jasper Broke the Haughty, which greatly softened Peridot up (though it didn’t reform her) shortly before she directly confronted the Crystal Gems. Once she was stranded on Earth and taken in by the Crystal Gems, she Took a Level in Kindness and became virtually the opposite of who she once was. Once Peridot regained her memories of the full extent of her cruelty in her past life in Chapter 4 of Act I, she’s even more driven to separate herself from who she once was… although she still constantly lives with the guilt of her past actions.

Repressed Memories: Following Peridot’s canon Heel-Face Turn, she did this for most memories of her Homeworld life. Some memories were just pointless to keep fresh in her mind (especially when Peridot was under the impression that she would never return to Homeworld again), but others were done subconsciously so that Peridot could better live with herself and focus on actually becoming a better person rather than dwelling on what a Manipulative Bastard she was for most of her life. The several new, more positive memories she made on Earth made this a fairly easy process. However, most of her Homeworld memories were easily regained when Peridot did return to her planet of origin. One memory stands out as being far more repressed than all others, as not even that stimulation would bring it out; it was so well-buried that it took a direct confrontation from Steven to come forward. Peridot’s first meeting with Jasper when she was assigned as her escort was traumatic enough to nearly shatter her entire identity; the only reason it wasn’t completely buried was due to the role Lapis played in it, as said memory reveals the real reason why Peridot was so lenient with and subservient to her once they became roommates, and why she wouldn’t let herself hate Lapis after being abandoned by her.

Required Secondary Powers: Not powers, per se, but in order to be able to will something to happen or for something to exist, Peridot (and Chartreuse) needs to know what it is and mentally visualize it. This is Who I Am best represents this, as while Peridot is capable of teleportation, she needs to have an idea of where her destination is and visualize it. Before teleporting her group to Egypt, Steven shows coordinates and pictures to Peridot so she can accurately and precisely teleport herself and others to said destination. If she just learns the name of an obscure location without any additional information, she won’t be able to teleport there, as she has no concept of what direction to even go – let alone having a clue what her destination looks like.

Restrained Revenge: An inadvertent example resulting from White Diamond’s attempted attack In the Back being countered by Peridot’s Backstab Backfire… which Peridot at first halts at the last second before the attack hits White out of respect for Steven… then, upon seeing White’s utter fear of her, realizes this is far more satisfying than just killing White off. A Diamond fearing the lowest gem in the caste system is a memory and a visual Peridot will treasure forever, and goes a long way in tempering her (justified) rage over the fact that White killed Pumpkin. Ironically enough, this moment is what causes White to self-destruct shortly afterwards, as she’s too ashamed to live it down.

Revenge Before Reason: Becomes a bit of a Hypocrite in Chapter 4 of Act I when it’s revealed her plot to poof Yellow Pearl and use her gemstone as a Skeleton Key doubled as a means for Peridot to get back at some of the gems who made life miserable for her. This is just a couple of chapters after Peridot berates her teammates for even considering doing anything on Homeworld not related to their mission, especially personal revenge. Bismuth and Lapis don’t hesitate to call her out on this, though at this point, Peridot finally succumbs to a nervous breakdown that had been building up all chapter since suffering 9FC’s No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. She’s too far gone to be reasoned with right away, and passes out soon afterwards.

Romance-Inducing Smudge: Sort of. In Chapter 5 of Act I, the first thing Steven heals is a bruised scar on Peridot’s face that she sustained during the one-sided No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. Peridot’s not actually aware she has this injury (the three crippled limbs are a bit more attention-grabbing), so she’s first disgusted when Steven smears a slimy thumb coated with his Super Spit across her face… only to abruptly stop complaining once the pain in her face fades away. Then Peridot is fascinated with her Love Interest’s healing abilities.

Romantic Hyberbole: Peridot actually thinks no hyperbole exists that could accurately measure how much she loves Steven. She constantly credits her entire identity to him, which extends to her life. Peridot means every word of what she says to Steven, and the bizarre part is that she’s not exactly wrong about a lot of it…

Peridot: “Oh, Steven. I’d say I love you, but that doesn’t even come close to accurately describing just how intense that sentiment is. Even if I said it nonstop all day long, it wouldn’t even reflect 1% of how much I mean that.”

Rudely Hanging Up: Peridot does this to White Diamond three times in Chapter 6 of Act III.

Can airplane seat cameras spy on passengers?

(CNN) — An airplane cabin’s not a great place for indulging in “me-time” — after all, you’re crammed into a small space with a lot of strangers — but you hope you can eat, sleep and relax en route to your destination without fear of being watched.

We’re not talking about voyeuristic fellow passengers, but an even creepier thought: being scrutinized via cameras installed in your inflight entertainment system (IFE).

In February, Vitaly Kamluk — a Twitter user who works in malware research — was on board a Singapore Airlines flight when his wife noticed an “interesting sensor” below the inflight entertainment screen and pointed it out to him.

“She felt general discomfort of a digital eye looking at her. I believe that’s a common reaction of general passengers.” Kamluk tells CNN Travel.

Kamluk suspected it was a camera and Tweeted images of the discovery, tagging Singapore Airlines in the hope of getting an answer.

“I was quite surprised to actually see something like a camera and as a security expert I could imagine many scenarios of misuse of such sensors which is why I decided to ring the bell,” he says.

Kamluk’s post quickly gained traction on social media and Singapore Airlines responded, explaining that its newer inflight entertainment systems include an embedded camera, although emphasizing that these cameras are deactivated.

On board cameras

The fact that some aircraft seats have built-in cameras is not new knowledge.

Singapore Airlines’ inflight entertainment system is manufactured by Panasonic Avionics, a US-based company that supplies IFE for many of the major airlines and French company Thales. Panasonic announced a while back that it’s added cameras onto seat backs.

And in 2017, Panasonic Avionics announced a partnership with Tascent — a biometrics and identity innovation company.

“The companies will combine Tascent’s biometric identity devices, software and services with Panasonic Avionic Corporation’s in-flight entertainment and communications systems to provide streamlined, easy-to-use identity recognition before departure, during flight and upon arrival,” read the corresponding press release.

The idea was seat-back cameras could facilitate onboard immigration, skipping lines when you land. It was also suggested that a seat-back camera could aid payment processing for onboard shopping.

British Airways says it has infrared sensors on some seat backs, but no cameras.

In the age of the smartphone, everyone holds a tiny cinema in their hand, so there’s certainly an expectation that airlines will have exciting entertainment options — a screen simply showing movies won’t cut it anymore.

But has Emirates ever done anything with its on-board cameras?

“Some of our 777 aircraft have cameras that came pre-installed with the inflight entertainment hardware that we had purchased from the manufacturer (Panasonic),” a spokeperson for the Dubai-based airline told CNN Travel. “It was originally meant for seat-to-seat video calls, however Emirates has never activated it.”

“These cameras are permanently disabled on our aircraft and cannot be activated on board. ”

Singapore Airlines

This echoes Singapore Airlines’ comment on the issue.

“These cameras have been intended by the manufacturers for future developments,” the airline says. “These cameras are permanently disabled on our aircraft and cannot be activated on board. We have no plans to enable or develop any features using the cameras.”

Meanwhile, American Airlines told CNN Travel that cameras are “a standard feature,” but are not activated and the carrier has no plans to use them.

A spokesperson for Aussie carrier Qantas also told CNN Travel that IFE manufacturers include inbuilt cameras as standard — and said the airline couldn’t activate the cameras, even if they wanted to.

“The feature would require software in order to be activated, which Qantas doesn’t have and doesn’t plan to install.”

Air New Zealand and British Airways told CNN Travel there were no cameras on board any of their aircraft.

But are airplane seat cameras a bad idea? Some aviation experts think they could improve the onboard, inflight experience.

Joe Leader, CEO of aviation trade body Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) think there’s several handy usages for these cameras.

As well as facilitating video chat between passengers, the cameras could look out for passengers becoming unwell or monitor cabins for suspicious behavior.

The cameras could also be used to spot human trafficking or assault — acting as an extension of the air steward’s eyes.

As for the privacy concern, APEX points out the ubiquity of cameras in 21st century society.

“Today, airline passengers are typically tracked outside the aircraft dozens of times on a typical journey through stores, security, roadways, and airports by cameras without any permission,” APEX says in a statement.

“In contrast, airlines only want to use cameras in the future with permission when technology has advanced to offer personalized service improvements that passengers desire.”

Hacking fears, suggests APEX, are “misplaced.”

“The greatest risk to airline passenger privacy breaches come from their own smartphones, tablets, cameras, computers, and smart devices used in private settings, ” says APEX.

The concern for some fliers is that even if the existence of these seat-back cameras aren’t a secret — and even if they could facilitate some cool features — it feels disingenuous that their presence isn’t advertised.

When contacted by CNN Travel, Panasonic Avionics stressed that it was committed to the privacy of passengers.

“Panasonic Avionics will never activate any feature or functionality within an IFE system without explicit direction from an airline customer,” the company said in a statement to CNN.

“Prior to the use of any camera on a Panasonic Avionics’ system that would affect passenger privacy, Panasonic Avionics would work closely with its airline customer to educate passengers about how the system works and to certify compliance with all appropriate privacy laws and regulations, such as [The EU’s data privacy regulation] GDPR.”
