I bring the TT Scar rant i promised I would do, while also going over some other things regarding the buttercups in general that i picked up from other asks people sent in.

Scar and Mumbo collectively brought Grian several months ago, and they together have been trying to give him the best life possible. Scar seems to be selfless -shown in him trying to stop Grian from fighting for him, and the unuse of the well- and as such it's quite clear that he had no intention to setting that command from Grian. He never meant to do it. Yet he did. In the heat of the moment, only caring about his friend's safety, he yelled out for Grian to stop fighting. In doing this, Scar meant it whole heartedly, causing the collar to activate and the shocks of electricity to start. However Grian continued to fight as much as he could. I can assume that Scar due to being weak at that time, that he didn't quite know what he had done until obviously he had been told by Mumbo. He thought he was doing the right thing.

Another thing that another person pointed out that I hadn't quite realised in the last rant, is that when Scar reached out Grian said no. Grian set a boundary, which is something we haven't really seen him do that before. He expected this new boundary to be respected, because he isn't relapsing.

Anyway, take care of yourself and don't force yourself to write. :3c

Scar didn't realize he ordered Grian, he really didn't, he was exhausted and panicked and desperate, so it triggered the runes. It hurts like hell, but it's the truth, he didn't MEAN for any of that to happen, he just wanted to protect Grian and he ended up breaking that promise.

Ahhhhh there it is again, the thing about Grian setting a boundary. Yes, yes, yes, is that what he's doing? I mean...he also refuses to make eye contact with Scar, so theres that 😳

I ammmm taking care I will not force myself to write, I intended to very firmly stick to my plan of writing what I feel like writing when I feel like writing it 😆 Thank you for the rant!

a common characterization in fics i see in scarian is

scar tends to think very quickly thru his actions before making an impulsive decision, he’s also more flexible and is more emotionally stable when making poor decisions

grian acts impulsively with his gut and often his heart, before thinking of repercussions. this causes him to freeze up after the fact when making bad decisions and have the doubt tend to eat at him. he has more difficulties navigating his own emotions and problems

would this also be similar to how u view them? or different? i’d love to hear ur thoughts on the matter :) hope ur having a lovely day, ur last drabble was amazing !!

I think it's similar to how I view them, yeah! :D

sometimes it depends on the specific situation for how I characterize them, especially when it comes to split second decisions and thought process. but generally speaking, I've always seen scar to be more flexible and emotionally aware of himself, while grian struggles with dealing and processes his emotions

grian tries not to think with his heart, but he very much does

I think specifically in the life games, grian and scar both flip flop between thinking through their choices and impulsively doing something. it's very nuanced, depending on a) what color they are (if they're red, most of the time they're not thinking things through) and b) the situation itself

but overall? yeah, I def agree with those characterizations <3

At the moment though?

Aside from xB & Jevin backstory (I have so many thoughts about those two it's not funny /lh), I really wanna write/elaborate more on the ZITS relationship as well as give ConVex backstory

ZITS backstory means more elaboration on the nature of Tango & Zed's Contracts, how they imitually met each other as well as Impulse, how Impulse met/befriended Skizz, and a nice big general Lore dump about Demons and Centaur Hybrids

ConVex backstory means more elaboration on how Cub came to be cursed to be an old man, why he and Scar started dabbling in Vex magic, the deal that was struck to make them both Changelings, and details about the event that broke Cub's curse and let him become a young man again

Also thinking about it, I wanna do a bit of Jungle Glitch elaboration because not only would that be a fun NHO Lore dump for y'all but it also details how/why Grian joined the server ;3c

Yeah, i have always loved this kind of “out of place” things, it’s just so interesting and fun... i think aside of anything related to wings and flying, learning about general cryptic stuff has been one of my special interests since forever, so... why shouldn’t i go fuckin ape shit and make an Au? lol

Anyway, here’s some lore for our favorite grandpa:

Tfc has lived a really long time, and he surely have a lot of stories to tell, and there’s one story that everyone knows even without completely knowing him; he once went to the farlands. The reasons are still unknown, but the hermits like making theories about it, bc no one really have the courage to go ask him...

Everyone in hermitcraft thinks he almost never goes out of his underground base, but the true is he actually comes out a lot to do... something. Only xisuma knows this

Like some hermits changes their feathers each station of the year, in the cold months the obsidian spots in his skin grows, covering him more so he can keep his temperature, even with light clothes

When he is using his night vision, his eyes turns black. He scared Grian the first time he saw him doing that

Some hermits say that he have wings, some say he just floats around, tfc doesn’t confirm anything and keeps doing his thing (jshshsgshsgs)

He knows the galactic language, and when he’s tired he accidentally starts speaking it...

Ok, Grian is objectively adorable. That voice + that face + his penchant for prancing makes him seem like a chaotic neutral cherub. excellent. also that voice of shock when Jevin fell off the frying machine. FUCKIN ADORBSAlso, Scar- I don’t watch him a ton, but he’s always adorable when i do! I just love his way of talking, and also his dog-in-a-boat SCARF i love SCARFand False of course! especially her pranks, i’ve always found her little prank video intros to be super funny and cute, and how she calls skeletons “skelebutts” also a general hermits being cute moment is when they run into any hostile mob and IMMEDIATELY book it.

as for the bit about the mimic’s name… i think i’ll make a separate post about that a little bit later (either later today or tomorrow). it’s not going to be a part of the Main Big Mimic Arc Rambles, because it’s something me and link figured out sort of on the side, later. but i’m happy to tell you about it, so keep an eye out for that one!

but yes yess let me tell you about what happened to scar's wings! and what better way to tell you than through an unnecessarily long storytime. tucking it under the cut <3

so. you know how i mentioned that they meet by hunters pouncing on grian, and grian getting hurt? mmh. we start with grian in pain, hungry and dehydrated to the point of lightheadedness, and exhausted from lack of sleep as well as a pretty significant bloodloss. basically, he’s out of commission, and it’s up to scar to take care of him and desperately try to keep him alive on zero supplies.

they make their way to a crevice in a ravine that leads into a cave. (in between this and that, there were tears and panic and desperation. and kisses. shh.)(and of course, the ribbon.) 

i think this cave is very fun, so i’ll yoink two snippets from the rp, one from scar’s pov (link) and one from grian’s (me), so you can get into this pretty atmosphere too <3 

-- SCAR POV snippet:

His best way of describing the place would be this nightmare server’s best attempt at a lush cave, Scar thinks somewhat bitterly.

And a rather sad attempt at that.

There’s greenery, which is shocking enough given how almost everything they’ve seen has been dead or dying. It’s mostly moss, a few sparse patches of grass, and a leafy substance that sticks to the walls, littered with thorns. 

Vines stretch down from the ceiling, but they’re not bright and colorful like glow berry vines back home. They do glow, but it’s only a faint illumination, somehow still managing to be grey and drab. And it’s not the fruit that glows either, but rather the vine itself, almost pulsating. Almost breathing. 

It makes Scar uneasy, but not immediately threatened. And unfortunately that’ll have to do.

There is fruit on the vines, for what it’s worth, but they’re bruised and darkened. Questionable at best. Scar doesn’t like their chances.

What matters, however, is the water. 

There’s a small pond in the center of the cave with water pooling into it slowly from one of the walls. 

It’s not the cleanest source of water given the dirty moss and dying roots that crawl along the shore, spreading their way underwater in various places and tinting the surface green, but they’re hardly in a position to be picky. 

(It’s likely better than the river from before, surrounded in mud and grime and later death.)

Right now a place like this may as well be paradise.

“Home sweet home?” Scar offers jokingly, though timidness seeps into his tone. He really hopes it can be, at least long enough for them to get back on their feet.

-- GRIAN POV snippet:

It’s the rhythm trailing off and stopping, that finally forces Grian to crack his eyes open. He blinks, chasing the blur away, trying to take in their new surroundings: the moss coats walls and ground in stray patches, lending them some colour in a place that’s otherwise drab and grim; the pond in the center glitters faintly, murky water reflecting murky light; the growth clinging to the stone walls and hanging from the ceiling looks wholly unhealthy, slick and sick, mushy, rotting, held together only in places. The vines seem to be breathing, swaying the gentlest bit even though Grian can’t feel a breeze; a calm but wholly unsettling pulse of light fades and brightens in time with their miniscule motion, always veering on not-enough, casting them in various shades of dimness. 

Just like anything else here, this cave looks wretched and like nothing he is familiar with. 

And yet Scat tacks a joking phrase on it, like plonking down a cheesy mat that says Welcome in cursive, deliberately and triumphantly placed in front of a building that’s entirely falling apart. There’s no salvaging this, but Grian chuckles quietly anyway, and with a wry curl of his lips, he echoes back, words hollow and barely touched by misplaced amusement: “Home sweet home.”

And it just might be—or the closest thing they can achieve to it right now. It’s dark and damp and unpleasant, the air a bit stale and the walls oozing icy chill, but it’s shielded and hidden, quiet, sheltered from the wind and the rain, with a pooled source of water perfectly within reach. It’s more than they expected. More than they could’ve hoped for.

now that you can imagine the absolute beauty of this place, for no reason at all but to indulge me, we can continue!

scar carefully sets grian down by the wall to rest. grian lies down in the only way he knows to be safe: with his dishevelled wings tucked tightly against a wall, feathers as much out of sight as he can manage, despite the horrible discomfort of it. and scar leaves to try and gather some supplies, leaving behind a promise that he won’t stray too far, won’t get out of sight.

he manages to put together enough things to light a fire, while grian dozes off into an exhausted, shivery sleep. with the fire lit next to the avian, scar moves away again, even as fatigue drags at him and begs him to stay, to rest. because this is all on him now: he needs to provide, he needs to protect, he needs to make sure they stay alive. (and it terrifies him, because he doesn’t have the best track record of staying alive, back on hermitcraft—) and for that, they need more supplies.

so he ventures back into the cave, searching. pawing at the stone. digging. trying so, so very hard to get something out of it all. using his wings to aid his aching legs. they provide dim, pale blue  light, which also helps as he moves further and further away from the fire. 

he makes sure to constantly look back, anxiously checking the area surrounding the fire, making sure nothing’s approaching grian, who’s wounded and asleep and completely defenceless.

scar does not pay nearly as much attention to his own surroundings.

that’s when it happens.

the crackling of the fire almost completely swallows up the familiar warning hiss of a creeper.

scar whirls around, eyes wide, catching a sight of a creeper that’s all wrong—distorted and decaying, overgrown with vines and fungus, with haunting empty voids for eyes—before it sets off and explodes.

all scar can do is fling his wings forwards in a desperate attempt to shield himself with them.

this is what tears his wings to tatters. (you can see their state on some of link’s art - like the hhau scar design/reference sheet)

scar skids on the hard ground, thrown by the force of the explosion, wings wrapped around him protectively. immediately after the cave falls quiet and dark again, his wings fade, too, and— he’s disoriented and breathless and in pain, and the explosion woke grian up—an awakening pitch straight into confused, searing panic—and scar doesn’t really get much of a chance to process what’s happened and how much damage there is. in fact, he doesn’t check his wings for a very long time. (he knows they’re damaged.) (he doesn’t want to see—doesn’t want to feel it.)

so it’s a while before scar gets to understand just how damaged his wings are.

and it’s even longer before grian sees.

hello!!!! Just wanted to drop in and tell you that I LOVE your fic HMTB and it was one of the first HC fica I’ve ever read!!! I’m not big on having a social presence on the internet but recently I’ve found myself in a Desert duo resurgence and hermit craft in general; I’ve found that I have this desperate to create my own art and stories that surround grian and scars dynamic bc it’s just… SO good. Like, idk how but there’s so many themes and details and symbols that you can draw from both their characters that isn’t even intentional!!!! It’s so cool!!! But I’m pretty scared to post anything or make an account dedicated to it. I’ve had this problem before, but after years and years of just following and lurking on accounts I feel like I might be able to handle it. Tbh I’m just anxious of what will happen if I do go through with it.

i've also been swallowed up by an urgent craving to create things about scar and grian :3c i know how that is. they're soo fun! and if you want to make things, you absolutely should! it's important to indulge in things that we enjoy doing, and creating stuff in particular can be so enriching!

i've sort of just. fallen into this hole myself. i remembered fanfics are a thing that exists, barely read a handful before i was hit by a sudden itch to make something myself... and boom, hmtb was born! just because i gave in! and i didn't know what to make of it or expect. it was just indulgent, born on a whim, but i put it out there anyway.

and then i remembered tumblr exists, and promptly went to look at scarian art :3c ... and bayum another itch later and i had an art account, and i also had no idea how that'll go or turn out!

and here we are.

opening up can be scary. but hey— think of it this way. if you make an account for things like that, you can always change your mind and pull out. it's easy. you can stop posting, or delete things—it's all yours. you control what you put out there.

i have met so many amazing people because i put myself and things i enjoy creating out there. it's been a wild ride—it's been, what, two years now?—but all of it is such an wonderful experience. (and yet somehow i continue to be surprised and so grateful and happy for every new positive interaction. like your message! <33)

if i never took that first step, i wouldn't be here, like this. i wouldn't know these people, i wouldn't have made these friends, i wouldn't have gotten back into rping, and i wouldn't be so continuously encouraged and inspired and excited to keep making more things! personally, i think sharing things is so fun. like, so so so fun. it's my favourite part. the mutual hype, inspiring each other, boucing off ideas, and feeling connected.

sometimes all it takes is being a little bit brave and taking a chance. taking that first small step on what might be a stroll to the end of your garden and back, or end up being a long, unexpectedly wonderful adventure. (yes okay i might be thinking about bilbo baggings here shhh—)

I might not be able to compete in terms of cooking but I can play a ukulele! my friends say I have a good fashion sense so obviously one of our hang outs (don't worry its only a date when scar comes with us, I have 2 hands Scar and I'll gladly hold the bags while you both hold each other) has to be clothing shopping!!

scar'd be so happy with that. you get bonus points for flower crowns. decidedly unbiased on my part. definitely.

music and meadow naps are also very good. as long as the nap spots are mob free. do you do mob proofing for these? 👀 check the perimeter? scar holds grian's safety very high, so that's important.

grian isn't big on fashion, but he does need new avian clothes post-rescue... and later, if he'll get interested in dressing up for scar he could definitely use a friend and an advice :3c is there any particular idea for clothes you'd offer him if he wanted to tease scar a little?

being respectful is huge. while we're waiting for the competition to provide fluff, tell me: are you okay with being a bird perch? are you good with being bird tackled and generally perched on? for no particular reason of course, just asking.

Also unrelated to good intentions itself but I love Tubbo and Scar's relationship in songbird's blood and I'm also feeling for Tubbo so hard after finding out that actually hey your dad isn't a human also the supernatural exists and ALSO not only is your dad not human he KILLS people and is THE Grim Reaper.

I have so much lined up in this next chapter that’s MMMMMMMM very tasty. very !!!!!!!!! the idea of the characters not being able to use magic is SUCH a fun idea to me because now they have to be ✨creative✨ about how they handle this. and it’s so exciting because we really are all sitting here like “crap how DO they get out of this???” I’m so excited

Time to wear my detective hat on and lets deep dive into this poem. CW/ mentions of suicide and suicide ideation

"A player once woven with love and more. Child of the Sun, warmth in his core" Grian's name meaning sun and his whole light/sun symbolism in general, how I love you. The implication that Grian was born with love oooh his family loved him so much. (Also that man probably give the warmest hugs)

"Lost his family since he was four" :( idk what happened to his family but the next verse:

"His wings were a blessing," AVIAN HORRAY. "a curse that he wore" OH FUCK, okay from this we can conclude discriminatory is in play here, his family potentially could have been killed/hunted down for their wings. Was he the only survivor? Maybe someone saved him...

"Different family comes and go. A new heritage he tried to sow" ooouh poor baby :( this one is pretty self explanatory, maybe his wings makes it difficult for him to be adopted, maybe his upbringing causes him to behave terribly unable to regulate his emotions since he is still so young. Who knows really… but the fact that there were multiple families…

"A childhood painted with horrid gore, so much pain he had to bore" Now this could obviously be about abuse considering the previous mentioning of different families. But allow me to wear my tin foil hat on for a second, this to me, is mentioning YHS and Tokyo Soul, those series are the closest we're ever going to get to actual "canon" C!Grian childhood and both of them are extremely dark (pretty sure being in the Mafia is just spelling for gore really)

Why did I come to this conclusion? well the next few verses is about him escaping that life, swearing never again and meeting Pearl. Also, SIBLINGSS!! aww good for them— "A bond that they'd both later regret" AH FUCK

The whole segment with the Watchers is so fascinating to me, is this post EVO or pre? Cause some segments seems to be located before he was taken post EVO, especially this part: "Child of the Sun, step away from the shore. We know that this life has left you quite sore" -> there is no way this was after EVO, Grian is very much still a player, a player that can die, why else would the Watcher try to discourage his attempt? I have no clue what happened before this but considering Grian's track record…. probably something not good. I think this might be when the Watchers offered him some powers, Grian is capable of talking and seeing them afterall.

"You are a fighter, 'That was before'" :( Grian's life truly has been fighting and surviving. The fact that this is still talking about suicide and giving up makes me think this is still the same conversation from the previous. But this:

"Can't you see I'm tired and drained? I'm a curse that was made, a curse that is chained" -> is a whole different conversation, infact, i think this is set post-EVO. AFTER he was taken but before he escapes (Grian does a lot of escaping). What makes me think this is a whole different convo between them is because 1 the topic (The previous one is heavily implied as an attempt while the latter is about being chained, restrained, CONTAINED) and 2 who he is talking to; in the previous one, the watchers are plural "We know that this life has left you quite sore" While this one seems to be between Grian and 1 watcher

also Goshhh Grian only allowed to be a player is if he is an entertainer kksahfkuhgdkuhgfdukhsd

Also the TITLES "Child of the Sun" and "Watcher of the Pained", how does Grian know that? Does each watcher have their own title? or only specific ones (if that is not the Watcher's title, Grian calling it Watcher of the Pained. He is The Pained)

Omg!!! This chapter!! How could you put him into freezer!!! God demn you cruelest of writers!!!

I know nothing about X but if something will happen to him, I will kill everyone in this room and then myself! He was just mentioned sometimes, but I'm already in love with him.

And Oh My God the words Scar said to Grian. "Your love kept her alive". Yes Yes YES hundreds times of yes, this is sooo true!!! Watchers just manipulated Grian into believing that love is harmful. Pearl feels so alive in this fic (and series in general), and this weird thing to say about dead character, but she is so alive, I can feel her whenever Grian thinks of her, and this is amazing.

Also one question. Watchers call Grian by other name (I'm too dyslexic to write or pronounce it correctly), but they called Pearl just Pearl. Does that mean that Pearl is the name they gave her? That she had another name? Or I missed something...

I LOVE THIS SOO SOOOOOOO MUCH!!! I was so scared when you said the last part, but I also understand why you separated crime au in two parts. Waiting So Much For the Next Chapters!!!!! (take your time, tho, don't forget to rest 🌺🌸🌺)

But seriously speaking, thank you for all of your hard work, and thanks to your girlfriends for helping you. I almost lost a friend tonight and reading this final chapter in the morning got me a out of numb state. It was like a breath of a fresh air, thank you so much!!
