i'll do one from my big bang, there are quite a few dialogue bits i'm proud of with that one (caveat it's unedited, so like, who knows if this bit stays in the editing)

“Well, yeah,” Eddie said. “I need to know your feelings on Ozzy versus Dio as lead singer.” 

Steve laid his head back, eyes fluttering shut, as Neon Knights filtered through the air around them. “Dio’s a better singer. Ozzy’s scarier. Both‘re good.” 

“Steve Harrington,” Eddie marveled despite himself. “Always keeping me on my toes.” 

Steve laughed, raspy and tired, and bumped his knuckles against Eddie’s thigh. “Even trade,” he said. “You sat through an hour of me and Wayne talking about the Pacers last week. Figured I’d give your boy bands a listen.” 

Eddie’s offended screech could probably be heard back at the bonfire, and Steve cracked an eye open to watch the reaction, pleased with himself like a cat covered in canary feathers. “They- Those are not-” Eddie said, and Steve laughed at his sputtering, “Black Sabbath is not a boy band!” 

“Man band, then,” Steve said. “Dudes in matching outfits having fun singing about death together. Don’t see the difference.” 

“Well, we had a good run,” Eddie said regretfully. “But I’m afraid this is it, I can no longer speak to you. My conscience won’t allow it.” 

“Your conscience can kiss my ass,” Steve said, eyes closed again.

hmm. it's a good question, because i don't even know if i'd notice without someone pointing it out to me. maybe the strict adherence to found family tropes? like, my characters are going to be Codependent To The Point Of Absurdity. or. possibly that i think it's impossible for me to write anything that isn't a slow burn lol.

for reading, honestly, i have no guilt with any fics i read. like, someone else wrote them, so if i'm into it, i know i'm not alone! but some of my off the beaten path favorites are things like sex pollen/fuck or die, Hyperspecific AUs set in other worlds/locations/timelines (@teddywesworl's appalachian farmer au lives RENT FREE), and missing scenes from canon that change basically everything about canon.

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

oh man, absolutely. for non-fic, i would say i strive to get across the humor or emotion in a scene with as few words as possible like c.s. pacat. i love leigh bardugo's worldbuilding and magical realism. i also love Grumpy Old Man Goes On A Quest stories like what nicholas eames and scott lynch write, and that's been on my mind a lot lately — basically a character going "yes i used to do that, and i was good at it, but i'm out of the game" and something dragging them back to their past.

for fic authors, truly i couldn't begin to list them all. but my bookmarks on ao3 are public, and if there's anyone in there, i bookmarked because it hit me in a way that will stick with me. if an author is in there multiple times? i'm in love.

I watched American Horror Story even before I even knew what the heck ship was. My first thought, apart from “Wow, this Tate guy is really horrifying” lol, was “their love is so beautiful.” Despite being a monster, he truly cared and loved her with all his heart. His relationship was so pure, regardless of their capricious situation, he never once hurt her, respected her and always was sweet and gentle toward her. They were my first and my always OTP.   

Damn, the chemistry was so good that I wish Evan and Taissa actually were together. 

2. Current Ship: Guzmuel (Elite)

HAHAHAHA GUY I DON’T EVEN WHAT THE HECK GOT INTO MY HEAD SO DON’T ASK ME xD

But seriously they have been on my mind lately. Watching a whole season where Samuel endlessly suffering from Guzman being a jerk was totally painful, and the way the writers treated their relationship quite horribly, but the fact that after everything had been going on, they still stuck by and chose each other in the end melted my heart. Their chemistry was so good that even better than the actual gay couple on the show (sorry not sorry lmao) and the actors doing questionable gay things didn’t make it better 😂🤣

3. My Ship Since The First Minute: Cherik (X-Men)

It wasn’t easy for me to be hooked from the first sight, but these men... right on the first time they shared the scene, I already thought, they had to be together.

4. I Wish They Had Been Endgame: Megstiel (SPN)

DEAR WRITERS, YOU HAD ONE JOB!!!

Like everything was right there. Everything was perfect. The chemistry, the ultimate trope enemies to lovers, the love story of an angel and a demon, she loved and cared for him more than anything else, even sacrificed her life for him while she’s supposed to be a fucking demon, he thought she’s beautiful even he’s able to see through her meatsuit, he used “Clarence” - the one she used to call him - as his cover name, The Empty used her imagine to torture him because it knew “who he loved”, etc. 

Then you brought back the empty using Meg’s vessel but not ACTUALLY her and just let her stay dead, then had Cas confessed his one-sided feelings to his long-year abuser before dragging him to hell? WHAT THE F*CK MAN!!?     

5. I Wish They Had Been Canon: Sterek (Teen Wolf) & Klayley (TO)

I adore Stalia, I really do, but I have been shipping Sterek from the start and wish that the writers actually gave them a chance. Dylan and Tyler had brilliant chemistry, and they had very fun chaotic dynamic in the show. They saved each other repeatedly, cared so much for one another, shared so many meaningful moments and deep connection, to the point that Stiles was actually Derek’s anchor. Seriously we had been queerbaiting till the end but still falling so hard for it :( 

Same with Klayley, with the whole married couple things and wasted potential. Even they did have sex one time, but only just for the baby plot then nothing more than “former one night stand” while they could have been so much more than that. They inspired each other to change for the better and the way they looked at each other was too intimate for just “mother/father of our child” and better than their own love interests. 

6. Most Of The Fandom Hates, But I Love: Rizzy (Shadowhunters) 

When she said she didn’t care about sex but only him when he came out as ace, that’s where they got me. I no longer cared about anything else. Just wish they had last longer. 

7. Don’t Watch The Show, But I Ship Them Anyway:  Villaneve (Killing Eve)

8. I Wish They Had A Different Storyline:  Handon (Legacies)

They are wonderful as separate characters and together, their soft scenes really have my heart. And their chemistry and their kisses are just like... wow, beautiful. But the fact that the writer just gave them codependent dynamic where they couldn’t reach full capabilities of their own, and their relationship were hated by most of the fandom really upset me. Since they broke up now, I hope both Landon and Hope can develop themselves as a character before finding way back to each other. Because I just want them to be endgame. 

9.  A Background Ship That I Wasn’t Supposed To Ship, But I Do: Golan (TW)

I wasn’t supposed to care at all about them because they’re pretty toxic, but it was true that they once cared deeply for each other (enough to shot up a house then murder people for the other lol) and I liked the “us against the world” “go gay do crime” kind of dynamic, so yeah xD

10. My NOTP: Destiel (SPN)

THANK A LOT JENSEN!

I swear there’re no other ships in the world make me despise than this pairing. Forced fanservice, no chemistry, ABUSIVE AF, even Jensen Ackles himself hated it. Dean had been horrible to Cas for most of their time and for YEARS, took advantage of him, used him, tossed him aside when he’s no longer needed, abused him both physically and emotionally, blamed Cas for everything went wrong in his life, tortured Cas’s son to the point this kid was suicidal and so on, there’s so much things wrong with this relationship that I couldn’t ever count (but if you really want to know then go to this post pls: https://ryoryeonggu.tumblr.com/post/189698174685/as-heartbreaking-as-castiels-departure-was-last). But the worst part is that the ship justified Dean’s shitty behaviors and neglected Cas’s pain just for that delusional “love” which was clearly one-sided and not even close to a normal brotherhood. So NO! I will kindly send my “fuck-off” blessings to that ship till the day I die.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I’ve been searching around for anything similar on AO3 (cause I hate fanfiction.net and I don’t trust Wattpad to have any decent fics).

Ehhhhh... tell us about a fandom you want to write fic for but haven't yet?

GOOD question! Let me think...I have so many plot bunnies so there’s so many fandoms I want to write for but one I haven’t talked about recently is Teen Wolf? I haven’t watched in ages but I still have an affection for it.

At one point I had planned on writing a Jace Winchester verse where she was Stiles’ twin (originally I had them both as the half-siblings of the Winchesters in a superwolf crossover but eventually dumped that concept, although maybe I’ll bring it back--I’ve been vibing with SPN again lately.) And I actually wrote the first chapter of it and I happened across that the other day and really liked it.

Basically Stiles and Jace are psychically linked but don’t know it, so they’re heavily codependent. Jace is a psychic empath and she was sent to boarding school on the recommendation of her psychiatrist, who wanted her to make friends outside of her brother. But she had a nervous breakdown with all the new people, and the fic starts when she comes back to town, like a week after Scott turns into a werewolf, and Stiles and Scott try to keep it from her to protect her, but it just makes her feel rejected and they end up gaslighting her a lot in the process (not intentionally, but it happens) so when she finds out the truth she’s infuriated and won’t talk to either of them. Obviously they make up eventually. 

Also I had a plot bunny possibly in the same verse as the Jace AU about this OC named Kat who was a necromancer who met Isaac in the cemetery bc she hangs out there and they have this weird friendship and so Isaac knows about the supernatural before he meets Derek but still becomes a werewolf and anyways they’re shipped together...I miss them…

Anyways though yeah Teen Wolf is one that’s been on my mind lately!

I also--like this doesn’t totally count because I did technically write one chapter of a TVD/Heroes fanfic that I then abandoned bc I lost my notes and don’t remember where I was going with it, but I’ve always wanted to write for The Vampire Diaries. I have this fic in my mind that’s kind of its own universe the same way MM is, on a smaller scale (mostly bc the TVDverse also exists on a smaller scale) but it contains basically all my TVD OCs and it would be kind of a rewrite where the show has a structured ~5 season arc (or whatever number I need) kind of like SPN’s first five seasons where it all builds up in a coherent narrative, as opposed to TVD canon or SPN seasons 6+ where it’s just kind of a supernatural soap opera where new baddies come in as necessary until it felt like ending. 

Bc I really believe in the potential of the show and I do love the characters and I feel like it could’ve been a genuinely good show if it had like. A Plotline. 

So yeah those are the ones I’m feeling!

Why do you think the Animorphs fandom doesn't have as many AU stories as some of the other fandoms? I don't mean non-cannon stories, but those where the characters are taken from the Yeerk Invasion concept enitrely and dropped into another sandbox: coffeeshop AU, Hogwarts AU, etc. Even really common additions to the cannon world such as soulmate AUs seem to be less used with Animorphs. Any thoughts as to why?

Reason 1: The characters are 13.

Technically they grow up to ages 16 - 19 before dying horribly the series ends, but their problems and concerns are very much those of actual early adolescents.  They don’t drive (not even cheat-driving with mopeds or helicars like in other teen superhero stories), they don’t go on real dates, they don’t have jobs, and they don’t use money except for occasional emergency purchases of shoes or tacos.

Obviously that doesn’t preclude the protagonists from suffering through romantic clichés, but it means that there’s less material to work with than in a series such as Harry Potter or Supernatural where the characters do have these kinds of classic adult concerns.  It also means that (and fandalites are classy af so they tend to recognize this) there’s an inherent squick factor in hardcore romance, even in AUs where the characters have been aged to 18+.

Reason 2: There are no love triangles.

Probably the closest we get is Rachel realizing in #27 that she has romantic options other than Tobias… which leads to her realizing that Tobias has what she wants and needs in a romantic partner, whereas a civilian guy simply doesn’t.  Other than that, we have the moment in #44 where Cassie realizes that she’s flirting with Yami… which sets up the realization that Cassie might be better off with someone who has more capacity than Jake to make her happy.  No one cheats, no one fights rivals, and no one experiences much jealousy.

Characters dealing with their romantic feelings in mostly-healthy mostly-transparent ways, whether in or out of relationships, doesn’t leave much room for rom-com miscommunications and the like.  Ergo, there’s no room for characters being forced to date or to confess their feelings by circumstance.  Even Jake and Cassie’s unhealthy dynamic remains unhealthy for, like, a book and a half, before they have an amicable post-breakup goodbye in #53.  Not much room for romantic angst.  Speaking of which…

Reason 3: Do we really need MORE angst?  REALLY?

This series is about six mostly well-adjusted kids having their entire lives destroyed by the horrors of war.  If angst is your jam, there’s no need to add it by introducing backstory elements or hurt-comfort premises that we didn’t already see in canon.  You can literally just grab that time Jake watched his cousin drag his internal organs off the ceiling (#16), that time Cassie killed an innocent prisoner of war on reflex (#19), that time Tobias was tortured into insanity (#33), those times Marco committed matricide (#15, #30, Visser) and you’re off to the races.  A lot of fan fiction tropes are all about angst (Tony Stark’s dad never loved him, Stiles Stilinski wishes he was special, etc.) and where Animorphs is concerned, there’s really no need.  On a similar note…

Reason 4: Adding ridiculous humor would be redundant.

This is a series where running gags include (but are not limited to): the hawk kid getting his talons stuck to cetaceans when he tries to acquire them, “These Messages” (e.g. commercials) and CinnaBon being the only artistic creations of humanity worth saving, the main villain of the series being a Cat Person, all the Animorphs debating whether it’s cannibalism to eat fried chicken in seagull morph, the resident alien being unsure whether vinegar and motor oil count as beverages, and the kids getting out of obligations with excuses that range from “I have to go buy a nicotine patch before I become a teen smoker” to “my cousin — and not the one you’re thinking — just got into a fistfight with a six-year-old over Raisinets.”  Coffee shop humor, de-aging humor, and other whacky fan fic premises simply can’t top what we already have.  Not only that, but a lot of the whackier fun AUs — animal transformation AU, gender mashup AU, evil twin AU — have already been done in canon.

Reason 5: The cast is already pretty tight.

By this I mean that the cast is tight in that there are few wasted or tangential characters, and that the cast is tight in that there are few intragroup conflicts.  It’s not really possible to “break” the dynamic in ways that would feel organic (e.g. Civil War AU) without losing a ton of what makes the series itself.  There are also relatively few minor characters that one can add to the original six’s dynamic in meaningful ways (although yours truly is guilty of trying), because they’re so isolated and codependent.  Writing AUs in which the characters just meet for the first time during the fic is... possible, but IMHO would feel deeply weird.

It’s also a fairly fundamental aspect of what makes Animorphs unique that there are no mentors anywhere in the series.  The kids get occasional information from Erek or the YPM, but they have NO ONE they can turn to if they want to ask for advice.  ALL of their attempts to seek mentors end in said adults revealing themselves to be incompetent (Elfangor, Gonrod, Ithileran), morally bankrupt (Alloran, Arbat), unwilling to help because they have their own agendas (the Ellimist, Toby, Aldrea), or simply less experienced in relevant areas than the kids themselves are (Eva, Jara, Mr. Tidwell, Sam Doubleday).  It is possible to add adult characters to the team through crossovers or other AUs — but to do so is to fundamentally alter the structure of the series.

Reason 6: The plot is already pretty tight.

Animorphs isn’t a perfect piece of coherent plotting, but it also doesn’t have any huge glaring plot holes.  There’s nothing that the whole fandom agrees needs to be “fixed”: some people want Cassie to be wrong more often, some people would like direct queerness, some people dislike the tragic ending, some people think the late-middle sags, some people want more Tobias-narrated books, some people (*cough* me) want the series to be 55 books long so that Rachel gets to narrate one last story… None of these represents a majority opinion, the way that the “what have you done to our Jaime Lannister!?!?!?” outcry is currently dominating the Game of Thrones fandom to the tune of 800,000+ signatures on the world’s silliest Change.Org petition.

The events of the series follow pretty logically from one another, which means that there aren’t tons of divergences on a single theme, and also that it’s pretty easy to invent divergence points from canon itself.  There are occasional modern AUs and college-age AUs, but a lot of the time they have to differ dramatically from the source work to pull off the effect.

Here’s where I acknowledge my bias: I dislike the majority of super-popular AU ideas.  Some strike me as harmless romantic clichés (hatebanging AU, accidental dating AU) or wealthy-American-kid clichés (college AU, wedding AU).  Some strike me as sacrificing character for plot (fake married AU, sword-and-sorcery AU) or not having much plot at all (wedding planner AU, elaborate-miscommunication AU).  Some are downright problematic in their magical codification of power dynamics (omegaverse, sex pollen) or deeply concerning consent issues by definition (soul mates, coffee shop AU).  Most of them are perfectly good story ideas, but most of them are not to my taste.

All of these AU ideas can be done well and have been done well, because every cliché becomes a cliché by being genuinely brilliant until overused.  I mostly avoid these stories anyway because too many of them are plagued by setting rather than motivation forcing the characters to go from Point A to Point B or even forcing the characters to become romantically involved.  So there is a distinct possibility that there are Animorphs stories out there that use these ultra-popular AUs, and I just haven’t encountered them.

Two people want to have a baby, they want to have a cute little thing to show off and call theirs but they don’t want a person. They don't want something that has opinions and talks back and doesn’t thread the thin line they set out for them. 

This reminds me of Actual BDSM, not like, anything sexual, because that’s not what BDSM usually IS, but more the aftercare and borderline codependency thing. Boyd gives him a bro nod before walking away.

Stiles makes an outraged noise, “Not my fault that Lydia basically trained us to be criminal masterminds.

Summary: “You can’t be here. This is private property,” someone calls out and for some reason, that voice sounds painfully familiar.

When it hits him why, Stiles almost chokes with the realization, “Derek Hale,” he says, unbelievably happy because he remembers Derek when they were young.

Derek looks grumpier, sadder, angrier. Stiles can’t really fault him for that. He also looks surprised that Stiles knows who he is. He squints/glares suspiciously at him, his nostrils flare for a second before he widens his eyes almost dramatically.

“Stiles,” he says quietly like he can’t really believe it.

Stiles beams, “Yeah, you remember me!”

Kate Argent is a creepy fucking pedophile and I’m almost happier that she’s in a coma hopefully slowly descending into a creeping lingering sort of madness never to be truly seen again. Hopefully, she dies. 

Derek, the martyr, gets shot but is nearly immediately fine.

Scott also gets shot and is immediately fine.

Derek goes through the Kate Argent torture thing.

Stiles shoots Kate sort of on accident but he’s fine, no worries.

Pros: The writing is fantastic, in character, and yet original, it’s technically canon compliant so-to-speak at times about like, the main storyline, see warnings.

It’s a fresh take on an old idea, and I love it, especially the little hints of Stiles magic here and there, I think OP was intending for this to be a mate!fic, but I don’t have confirmation of that.

I love everyone in this fic, and the way they’re written is fantastic really.

It’s just such a good story, and I really want everyone to see it.
