one book deep into the husky and his white cat shizun (as usual i'm late to all the good parties) and i have a few observations

1 this is much funnier than i expected. i'm pretty sure we're in the lighthearted getting-you-invested phase, because to make it really hurt you have to make me care about these people first, but i still wasn't expecting it. and yes i have been forewarned of The Horrors, and the few glimpses we've gotten of the original timeline are Super Yikes. taxian-jun's wedding? yikes on bikes.

2 aggressively worried about shi mei. he seems like a sweetie and i do not want him to either turn out to not be a sweetie or die again. both would make me sad. but mo ran for sure will not have the emotional intelligence to realize he's not really in love with shi mei so much as the idea of shi mei until we get through some serious character growth.

2a (was he ever really in love with shi mei? maybe once, long ago, before everything. that would be interesting to explore)

2b (absolutely the funniest resolution to a danmei love triangle is "sorry, i'm straight," so i'm kinda rooting for that)

3 i was ABSOLUTELY not prepared for Utter Disaster Chu Wanning. dear god. i've managed to avoid spoilers enough that i was buying his cool aloof immortal shtick but he's a cripplingly socially anxious mad inventor shut in who's lost control of his life so badly that he sleeps amidst pieces of his engineering projects because they've taken over the bed? oh no i love him.

3a (really waiting on the reveal of what exactly went down in the incident that set mo ran on his downward spiral--chu wanning failing to save shi mei. my bet is on something happening that chu wanning knew he could not save shi mei from, but he was so utterly unequipped to offer explanations or comfort that he came across as uncaring. ouch.)

4 really thought awkward coffin boners were a mxtx thing but here we fucking are. hilarious.

5 actually the whole bit where adult desires and experiences plus teenage body have turned mo ran into an inappropriate boner factory is solid gold. ten out of ten never stop.

I hope we spend more time learning about Chu Wanning specifically as an inventor, I love that aspect of his character, makes me want about a billion awkward engineer aus.

I wonder if we ever get more detail on the early days of Xue Meng and Mo Ran's relationship. Was Xue Meng's dislike born solely of class arrogance? Did Mo Ran treat Xue Meng poorly initially because he assumed Xue Meng would look down on him, and things went from there? Was there a specific incident that got them off on the wrong foot?

Will Mo Ran recognize the fourth sharing their courtyard from his time as Taxian jun? I'm guessing yes...

Gotta stop there but still 3 chapters feels sorta like progress...
