i am once again filled with the urge to be the one who makes the definitive movie/tv show about the last war of the roman republic because i'd be normal about both sides
#personal#like you all know i'd love to make an augustus show i can give you the entire outline season by season right now#but if i can't honestly just one of the last war#because both sides are so desperately fascinating in that they really believe that they're in the right#and the interpersonal dynamics are so insane#and you can do something sympathetic to both sides#to octavian's struggles to actually build a government that works and his very real concerns#about it being ripped from him by people who don't know what they're doing (antony)#and consider it a dynastic right (cleopatra for caesarion)#while antony and cleopatra regardless of their ambitions were very clearly in deep and real love with each other#and just trying to look out for the other's best interest#and that on both sides (especially for octavian and cleopatra) it was very clear that loss in battle would not only mean#a personal loss of life by the time the war ended#but also the real possibility of the deaths of family members including their own children#and how that would motivate them to fight hard no matter what#there's even a parallel in numbers#cleopatra had four kids her son by caesar and the three by antony#and octavian raised four kids his natural daughter julia his two stepsons and juba after caesar's assassination#you can do a lot with the parallels#and all the messy international relations stuff when you throw herod into the mix
