god finishing my recursion run just had me thinking about how bold the ending of transistor is from a storytelling perspective, but how much it pays off, as well... massive spoilers for the end of transistor under the cut (like fr please dont read if you are planning to play and dont know what happens at the end bc its such a visceral emotional experience to have without spoilers and i want that for all of u)
i think its the way they completely defy a traditional narrative. like you defeat royce, you can hear mr. nobody again, you've won. slowly you can start to rebuild cloudbank. even the music feels triumphant, the slow, inspirational guitar strumming that builds and swells as you cross the bridge. mr. nobody even prompts red on what she could do first, rebuild the canals, junction jan's... it's the logical next step. we won, now we rebuild. we return to the familiar, the life we've always known.
except the first thing red brings back after the statues on the bridge is mr. nobody's body. he tries to reassure her that while that's not him anymore, he'll always be with her, in the transistor. and then red hugs the transistor, and she puts it down, and she sits down next to his body. and we, as the player, lose all agency. we become one with mr. nobody, essentially - all we can do is watch in agonizing horror as red makes her choice.
and (at least in my experience the first time i played, and even to some degree in subsequent playthroughs) it doesn't feel good. we were supposed to save cloudbank, right? that's what this has always been about all along, hasn't it? but the game tells us, no, this isn't your story, or your choice. it's red's. it's been red's all along.
and for a second there's indignation, like, what do you mean we did all that for red to kill herself in the end? what do you mean the story ends there?
and then the scroll begins, and its all these memories, all these moments of red and mr. nobody before the camerata and all of this, and you start to realize - this is red's story, and this is what matters. this. him. them.
cloudbank is empty. everyone is dead. what would be the point in rebuilding a whole city that would remain just as empty? going even further, i think it also begs the question, if cloudbank was rebuilt and repopulated, who's to say this wouldn't happen again, years down the line? who's to say history wouldn't repeat itself?
and you realize what red sees inside the transistor, during the fight with royce, the potential she realizes, to make good on mr. nobody's desire to see her again, face to face. and at that point, its not even really a choice anymore. there's only one way this ends.
and i think its so bold because (at least in my experience) it's not immediately understood. it’s not straightforward. you have to wait a bit; you have to go along the same emotional journey as mr. nobody does. there's the horror, the shock, the sadness, the happy(ish) ending you expected ripped away from you, pulled out from under your feet. a feeling of betrayal, even. but as the scenes of their life together play out, and finally, you see him in the country, and there's red, and he says "hi", and you can guess what's about to happen but it still hits you like an 18-wheeler, and when red says "hey", you realize this is the most utterly joyful ending there could have been.
it's bold because it asks a lot of us, as a player, as an audience. it asks for a lot of trust and buy-in to the story, to red, to her autonomy and agency as a character, to her relationship with mr. nobody. and i know not everyone can give that, and i know there are people out there who were left upset or disappointed by the ending. but for me and i know for many, many others that can give that, it pays off spectacularly.

Do you have an opinion on the popularity of romance books today and the romance genre in general? Fourth Wing is the fastest selling adult novel in 20 years. Romance sales blow any other genre in the water in terms of sales and honestly keeps the publishing industry afloat along with the blockbuster backlist books.
I would be like wow, so great but it’s just that I am not a fan of the genre norms. It’s like the male main character gets to have a wider range of emotions and behaviors that wouldn’t be considered likable on the female protagonist. There’s more and more discussion on how sassy, feisty leads are masculine and how readers would like more passive damsels, feminine women as if that wasn’t the norm for all of time not long ago.
In books that are female fantasies, the men get focus. Male wish fulfillment focus on MEN too. It’s so irritating.
Wow! This is a big one and a rising topic thanks to BookTok. I believe BookTok is a small piece of the puzzle, though. People think getting rid of it will “cleanse” literary spaces, but I disagree; it’s only a manifestation of the pretentious spaces of literature and academia. Romance and the romance genre, to me, are fascist. Romance and its genres are used to socialize women to accept and normalize all forms of misogyny by placing it in an eroticized context (think about one of the most loved romance genres: enemies to lovers). I haven’t read any feminist theory or text on romance in a broad sense, but Andrea Dworkin goes over this heavily by dissecting and critiquing fairy tales. I highly suggest reading Part One: The Fairy Tales from her book Woman Hating (1974), if you want to understand where I’m coming from. It’s a fine read and easy to understand if you’re new to feminist theory. She states, “Women are no less terrified, for we know that not to be passive, innocent, and helpless is to be actively evil.” One of my favorite critiques she makes is of Snow White’s story. I read it when the Snow White live-action was showing trailers everywhere, and every time I saw it, I was in disgust. How can we promote this to little girls? My favorite line from the whole section is: “The only good woman is a dead woman. When she is bad, she lives; or when she lives, she is bad.” This was in reference to Sleeping Beauty. She is a passive woman. “For a woman to be good, she must be dead, or as close to it as possible.” We can reference this to the majority of romance concepts and media.
The female lead in the book is put through grueling and abusive circumstances to move forward the male lead, who I assume becomes her love interest. It also states that the story was inspired by the author’s military experience with her husband and her personal struggles. That already tells me it’s going to carry some fascist and militaristic ideals (like almost every fantasy book ever, lol). Unfortunately, most romance readers are a specific demographic for a reason. Low self-esteem, not conventionally attractive under fascist beauty norms, little to no romantic experience, and often neurodivergent. This is not a fault of those women but the predatory nature of capitalistic marketing. Publishing companies prey on this demographic because they are the money-makers. To make a bestselling romance like Fourth Wing, you have to target people who are more prone to PSI (parasocial interaction). PSI is very crucial in modern marketing. And if a woman believes she is unlovable or invisible in the real world, she will buy fantasies that center her as lovable and desired in fiction.

People want the return of girlish warriors and damsels in distress. The people LOVE their gender roles. Now to expand more on romance being fascist slop (genre and a real-life concept). Romance often presents (male) domination as love and (female) submission as safety. This reflects the structure of fascism. As Dworkin points out, eroticizing inequality is one of patriarchy’s most successful strategies. If submission feels good, why resist? The most popular tropes, “grumpy x sunshine,” “enemies to lovers,” and “touch her and die bf,” all reward women for enduring emotional neglect, verbal abuse, or physical danger in exchange for being "chosen". People often think written porn (and pornography in general) is inherently radical and empowering just because women write it. But it is not; this is why I believe identity, equality, and assimilation politics have failed us. Most self-insert or x-reader erotica replicates gender roles even more rigidly because it’s built around identification with the “good woman.” I see x readers and self-inserts all the time on here because alot of them do not know how to tag shit. These texts allow women to eroticize themselves as submissive, desirable, pure, or passive in a way that is never punished, which is something patriarchy denies them in real life. For example, they get to control the scenarios and topics of the fanfiction. They can write "non-con" smut without actually being "raped." Even “dominant” female characters in erotica are usually written to be attractive to men. Publishing and fanfiction platforms alike rely on women’s emotional labor to produce and consume these fantasies on a mass scale. Now, to answer your last thoughts on why female fantasies still focus on men. Because under patriarchy, women are trained to desire male desire. Male wish fulfillment centers the man’s power. Female “wish fulfillment” centers the man’s vision on how he views women socially, politically, and psychologically. This is the tragedy of gendered socialization. Women are taught that being loved is their goal. Men are taught that doing what they want is their right.

Ministry to the Unemployed.
In the current political climate I am hearing from many colleagues and friends who are in the midst of unemployment or aware of potential job instability. Some people were eager for policies that limited government programs perhaps not realizing that this was going to impact real jobs. Statistics are currently showing that unemployment is rising although for now the labor market remains fairly healthy.
What we are facing right now (which I anticipate will increase soon) is structural unemployment based on government policies that will undermine whole service industries along with trade/tariff policies that will negatively affect both the means of production and consumption. Couple this with a lack of developing an economic plan beyond reducing taxes for the super wealthy and we can anticipate an economic downturn and structural unemployment in the near future. There are other forms of unemployment but the structural type is what many of us are hearing about now and will see this increase soon.

I assume that others might be hearing this as well. As someone who went through unemployment because of cuts to social programs I want to suggest that many of us can become a minister to these colleagues and friends who will be going through these difficult situations.
The video above reminds those who have reason to fear becoming unemployed to keep their resume updated and to maintain their networks active. To be mindful of job opportunities that may exist within their fields. If layoffs are a reality it will be important to consider how you can financially prepare yourself by cutting cost from unnecessary expenses. Be prepared to apply for unemployment benefits. Always remember that opportunities can be found in moments of chaos and volatility but we must be able to be open to them. Do not burn any bridges, you never know where the next opportunity might come from.
The other advice I offer comes from Ignatian spirituality (in momentary crossroads like this I recommend the book “The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything,”) and that is to discern your career and life-situation. Be open to your reality, were you in a toxic work environment or relationship? Did you truly like what you did? Was it meaningful outside of the circumstances that led to the layoff? Job loss, relational breakdowns, death and moving are some major life events where we should discern where we are and what God is calling us to do. These also can be moments of anger and raw emotions. Journey with the Book of Job in the Hebrew scripture to help assess where life is taking you. This is certainly a moment to discern, religious communities may want to explore offering networking and discerning retreats for the unemployed.
As for those of us who might know of others who will face unemployment and job loss. It is important to be there for them. Especially if we have faced unemployment ourselves, we can be a wounded healer for others. Here are some practical, human-centered ways to show up for your friend who lost their job in a sudden layoff. The advice comes from Karen Hurt whose video is below although I have edited it from my own experience.
Start with Empathetic Connection and Listening. Avoid platitudes. The primary thing to do here is to listen but if you have gone through unemployment yourself then you may be able to offer some meaningful perspective.
Offer Practical Help (Because Actions Speak Loudest). Parents and siblings of young families can be especially helpful with giving time to care for the kids while the young parents can find employment or go through training. Being a resource will be crucial if you happen to know of opportunities.
Amplify Their Story—Because Networks Matter. It is cathartic to be able to tell your story. Encourage this but also offer yourself as a network for them. When you hear what they did and what their contribution was you can became a networking agent for them and that is a crucial resource.
Be supportive and keep checking in. Remind them that searching for a job is itself a full time job and be a support to them. Of course we might not be able to help them find a job, we do need to be honest about what we can do to help, but we can pledge our support to keep our eyes and ears open.

This is devastating to one’s mental health as it throws your confidence as well as your schedule and work routine off. The program offers some suggestions for how to address these mental health issues.
The news of increasing unemployment and growing layoffs is very troubling but not surprising. Many people who voted for Trump believed that he was going to lower prices and boost our economy. I am sure some of his supporters will continue waiting for this golden egg to hatch. But in the meantime those of us who analyze and reflect on the socio-economic reality see and hear the economic downturn that is starting to happen and we have every reason to fear that this will only get worse. We need to hold each other up during this challenging time.
