Real talk: I wish MCU fans read the comics the movies and shows were based off of, and not just recap videos on YouTube.
And I'm not saying it's WRONG to enjoy the MCU, I enjoy bits and pieces myself, but refusing to at least acknowledge the comics is...weird and disheartening. So many authors and artists have collaborated together to bring iconic stories and characters to life, and most aren't paid fairly, especially when their work is used without them getting proper pay. And to see nobody care because they don't READ the comics is really sad. It's also fascinating, because comics...are much more then what the MCU is. Every bit of sadness, of happiness, of joy and darkness the MCU has, the comics have tenfold. There aren't stupid jokes cracking up every five minutes, there's some real depth to these characters.
Take, if you will, Moon Knight.
Moon Knight is one of my favorite superheroes ever. Not only is he excellent Jewish representation (one of the few superheroes who Marvel actually allows to be shown Jewish anyway, coughcoughSPIDER-MANcoughcough), he's really excellent DID representation. Even with that aside, he's had some of the most gripping stories I've ever read. His struggle with himself, his DID, his life as a mercenary, it's genuinely so good.
There's these pages in particular, which I implore you to read:
Wow. It's just...really good. He isn't making funny quips, he's DETERMINED to save this little girl from kidnappers. He has a job, and he does it proudly.
Now, when I heard the MCU was going to adapt Moon Knight, I was really excited. I waved aside them making Steven Grant a museum worker, because I just wanted him in live-action. He means so much to me, and it's...
Well, let's take a look at what Mr. Knight's role in the MCU is?
And for the life of me...I don't see how people like this.
He's just reduced to 'the funny character'. Just like Spider-Man. Just like Iron Man. Just like Deadpool. Just like Jane Foster Thor. Just like the 500 'funny characters' that exist in the MCU.
See, this is where the real problem of the MCU lies. It's not TRYING to adapt the comics. It's trying to adapt them while seeing them as LESSER. And it's tiring.
If you need an example of Marvel actually respecting the source material, look at X-Men 97'! It's not afraid to take itself seriously, it's not afraid to be cheesy and have costumes that don't look like military garb. And it's some of the best superhero television a lot of people have ever watched. I bet even MCU fans REALLY like it!
This isn't an MCU hate post, I feel like I have to emphasize that. But as a fan of the comics and the MCU...it's just tiring to have standards dropped so low. And I really hope Marvel Studios learn from X-Men 97' and start to respect their comic counterparts.
