merlin’s secret being a visual thing. when he is around arthur or gwen or leon or morgana or [insert whatever character here] merlin seems pale and thin, almost like a ghost or an apparition. when the sun lands on him he reflects it like a corpse, he eyes seem dark and dull. he has this ethereal beauty to him, this otherworldly visage that leads many to believe he is of fae blood. he just doesn’t seem to be 100% human. but when he is ONLY with lancelot or gaius (cough or gwaine bc gwaine DEFINITELY knew) merlin is heartachingly human. merlin shines in the sunlight, colors are brighter and more vibrant around him, and his smiles are wide and his laughs are boisterous. he takes on color and leaves everyone wanting to know him. but when other join in or interact with the two, merlin shifts before their eyes so quickly and suddenly that they aren’t sure whether or not what they saw was a trick of the light. the idea still leaves them wanting more and wanting to see the merlin who is just so full of life but that merlin only appears for a small select group of people. merlin who has a guard so high that it has an effect of other’s perception of him.

its not abt the trust tests specifically perse, its more abt how he treats pangi and even zam in their relationship itself. his insecurity makes him both incredibly pushy towards them abt wanting honesty and trust yet also very quick to bottle up his own feelings of distrust or dissatisfaction. i dont think he would take it well if zam REPEATEDLY asked him to choose between her and like pangi, and refused to admit that she doesnt like his relationship w one of his most important people despite being passive aggressive abt it and insistent that he will HAVE to choose.

nor do i think he would be okay w it if pangi demanded half of his hearts, his base coords, and promises to basically die for him whenever pangi needs him to in order to keep his trust. although a lot of what he does is born out of insecurity and paranoia, the way he treats them bc of it isnt smt i fw at all like im sorry i try to be understanding but he annoys me sm sometimes w how weirdly he treats the people around him and how he fails to see any issue in how he treats them

see i hate when people who do not write are like: "THERE'S NOOO WAY XYZ AO3 AUTHOR CAN WRITE THAT MANY WORDS IN A WEEK! NOT POSSIBLE" Buddy, do you know how far obsession can push an author??? I can write 1,000 words in fifteen minutes if I seriously push myself that means I can write a 100k fic in like 25 hours. In the year I've been posting fic I'm up to like 300,000 words or something, not including what is unposted in my google docs, not including the THREE NOVELS I WROTE LAST YEAR. Like to accuse??? Authors of either stealing or using AI when they're posting long works is a wild take to me. A good outline, determination, obsession, and experience can take any writer as far as they are willing to go. Jesus Christ.

Soichiro pats your head and always talks in a tone different than he uses for others. Cooes at you, talks like he’s guiding you through something or protecting you— cherry on top, though is how he'll look at you, really look at you, no more of that condescending of infantilzaing behavior, eyes open and you can see his pupils- like a predator's yet something akin to warmth, the most kindness he could even gather.

it's been years and it it still the same, if you could calculate how long you've spent with one another, as something- acquaintances, maybe- perhaps friends if you decided to expand the borders of the term. for someone you've known for so long, the time spent together is so little, yet none of it is up for comparison. not when you know the years inbetween he kept an eye on, and you always had an ear in the open, waiting for any mention of his name in the passing. the invisible hand that always reaches out from behind the shadows and that serpentine smile etched onto your memory forever.

maybe to the untrained eye, it'd appear soichiro will forever hold this power over you- that comes with all difference between your ranks once, with experience, age and everything else. yet the leash stands in your hand, his hand wrapped around yours tightly, offering it to you on golden platter with that smile always creating a storm at the pit of your stomach.
