since the hockey house is pretty much a frat house, when going to visit koda you go to the parties together and they’re a lot but you don’t want to take the college experience away from him (and your parents are not that happy about him taking you a frat party)

the fight
dakoda rhéaume-mullen x high school girlfriend!reader
word count: 2.4k
warnings: creepy dude at a party, reader gets called a slut, fighting, slight mention of blood. if i missed anything lmk
︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵︵‿︵‿︵‿︵︵‿︵‿︵
the party is overwhelming from the start. the music is loud, the air thick with sweat and cheap beer, bodies pressed together in every direction.
you spent most of the night with the other girlfriends, letting dakoda do his thing with the guys. it's how these nights usually go. you don't want to take the college experience away from him, even if these parties aren't really your scene.
you're on your way back to find him when some random guy stops you.
"hey. have i seen you around here before?"
you shake your head. "probably not. i'm visiting—"
"visiting, huh?" he cuts you off, eyes raking over you. "can i get you a drink?"
you glance around, hoping to spot dakoda somewhere nearby. "i'm okay. i'm here with my boyfriend."
"yeah?" he smirks, clearly not buying it. "he must be pretty lucky then."
a familiar arm snakes around your waist, pulling you in close. "fuck off. she's not interested." dakoda's voice is firm, his body tense against yours.
the guy just laughs, rolling his eyes. "oh, so you're the boyfriend? maybe you should keep a better eye on her instead of letting her roam around the party like a slut."
dakoda's grip on you tightens. "watch your fucking mouth."
the guy laughs again. "or what? she's probably wandering around looking for someone better than you."
before you can even process what's happening, dakoda shoves the guy up against the wall, his forearm pressing into his chest.
"you don't know shit!" dakoda snaps. "you're lucky i don't beat the hell out of you right now for calling her a slut."
"like you have the balls to do—"
the guy doesn't get to finish his sentence. dakoda's fist connects with his mouth so hard you swear you can hear the crack of bone.
"sorry? what was that? i don't think i heard you. can you repeat that again?" dakoda taunts.
the guy coughs, barely able to get a word out before dakoda's fist crashes into his jaw again. blood splattering against the wall.
"you wanna run your mouth some more?"
"okay. that's enough." you grab dakoda's arm, trying to pull him away, but he rips his arm free from your grasp without even looking at you.
people are pulling out their phones, recording. no one is stepping in to stop it. your heart pounds as you shove through the growing crowd, searching desperately for someone who would help.
you spot hunter, cameron, and michael in the kitchen. "please help me. dakoda's fighting someone, and i can't get him away."
hunter and cameron don't hesitate, rushing toward the living room. you move to follow them, but michael grabs your arm.
"just hang with me," he says. "he'll be fine. they'll break it up."
you nod and let out a shaky breath, leaning against the counter. "i've never seen him that angry before. it's like he didn't even hear me when i tried to stop him."
"adrenaline." michael says, taking a sip of his beer. "you can't always talk someone down when they're already seeing red."
the shouting dies down from the other room, and cameron pushes his way back into the kitchen.
"we got him outside." cameron says, walking up to you. "he wants you."
you waste no time going outside. dakoda is sitting on the steps with hunter standing infront of him. hunter gives you a thumbs up and you nod before he walks past the both of you to go back inside.
you hesitate before sitting down next to dakoda. "are you okay?"
"i should be asking you that." dakoda's voice is quieter now. his knuckles are split with blood smeared across his skin.
you reach for his hand, turning it over gently in yours. he lets you, but his shoulders stay tense. "i'm fine," you tell him. "but you scared me. i've never seen you like that before."
dakoda exhales, finally looking over at you. "i'm sorry. i didn't mean to scare you, but i wasn't going to just let him get away with calling you a slut and disrespecting you." he pauses for a moment before adding. "i'm ready to go if you are."
you nod, letting go of his hand. "i'm ready."
dakoda texts michael that the two of you are leaving and you walk back to the dorm.
︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵time skip‿︵‿︵︵‿︵‿︵‿
the next morning you wake up to michael throwing a pillow at you.
"answer your fucking phone." he grumbles as you sit up to look at him.
you reach over dakoda and see that your mom is calling. "hm that's not good."
"your dad?" dakoda asks, rubbing his eyes.
"mom."
you answer the phone and immediately you are met with her yelling. "what the hell were you thinking, letting dakoda get into a fight like that?! someone posted a video of him punching that guy on snapchat and it's been sent to me more times than i can count."
you take a deep breath. "mom, he-"
"no!" she cuts you off, her voice rising. "don't even try to explain. i saw the video, and i'm not going to sit here and let you get caught up in something like this. you need to get home right now. you're not hanging around there any longer."
"he was sticking up for me." you try to explain again, but she isn't having it.
"sticking up for you?! by getting into a fight at a party? do you realize how it looks for you to be with someone who thinks violence is the answer? i raised you better than this! get home now. i'm not asking. i'm telling you."
you grip your phone tighter. "mom, please, just listen to me."
"i am listening, y/n, and what i'm hearing is that you're making excuses for him. violence is not the answer, and i won't have you around someone who thinks it is."
"mom, i-"
"now, y/n." the call ends before you can say another word.
you glance down at Dakoda who's fully awake now. "i have to go home."
"i'll walk you out." dakoda says, getting out of bed.
you nod and quickly pack your things. you don't even bother changing out of dakoda's t-shirt and sweatpants and just throw a hoodie on before following dakoda out of the dorm.
"i'm sorry if it messed things up for you." dakoda tells you, reaching for your bag.
you let him take it and grab his free hand. "i don't know what's going to happen when i get home, but this isn't your fault."
"it is. if i would have kept my cool last night we would still be sleeping and you wouldn't have to go home." he tells you, opening the car door. "and your mom wouldn't be hating every bone in my body right now."
you slide into the driver's seat, gripping the wheel for a moment before sighing. "she doesn't hate you. she's just worried."
dakoda puts your bag in the back, then comes back to shut your door. he hesitates for a second, his hand resting on the frame as he looks at you. "yeah, worried that i'm some bad influence. that I'm dragging you into shit you don't need to be in."
you shake your head. "she just doesn't get it. she wasn't there. i know why you did it. I just don't know how to make her understand."
"just call me when you get home, okay? or as soon as you can." he leans in and kisses you. "drive safe."
"i will. i love you."
"i love you too."
︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵time skip‿︵‿︵︵‿︵‿︵‿
you walk into the house and your mom and dad are both sitting in the living room.
"sit," your mom says, turning off the tv.
you don't argue. you set your bag down by the stairs and sink onto the armchair across from them.
"i cannot believe you," she starts, shaking her head. "first, you let your boyfriend drag you to some disgusting frat party, and then you let him get into a fight over you? do you have any idea how reckless that is?"
"he didn't drag me anywhere. i went because I wanted to."
"that makes it even worse!" she yells. "you shouldn't be going to those kinds of parties, y/n. you know what happens there drinking, drugs-"
"that's not what it was like," you interrupt.
"oh really?" she scoffs. "then why is there a video of your boyfriend throwing punches all over social media? why are people sending it to me like i should've seen this coming?"
you press your lips together, trying not to let frustration get the best of you. "he wasn't just fighting for no reason. some guy was being a creep, and he stepped in."
"stepped in?" She laughs bitterly. "he could've taken you and left. but no, he decided to handle things with his fists. that's not someone you should be with."
you shake your head in disbelief. "he's not some violent guy who goes around looking for fights. he was just protecting me."
"he didn't protect you," she counters. "he put you in danger. he made you part of a situation that could've ended a lot worse than it did. what if that guy fought back harder? what if the police got called?"
"i don't want you seeing him anymore." your dad buts in.
Your stomach drops. "what?"
"i said i don't want you seeing him anymore," he repeats. "i don't trust him, and i don't trust the choices you make when you're with him."
"you're overreacting," you say, your voice shaky. "you're just deciding this for me? i get no say so? you guys don't understand. i love him."
your mom lets out a loud sigh, like that was the last thing she wanted to hear. "you're still living under our roof, so yes, we get a say in this."
tears prick at your eyes, but you refuse to let them fall in front of them. "this isn't fair." you stand up. "i'm going to my room."
"y/n-"
"i don't want to talk anymore." you turn on your heel and grab your bag as you head upstairs, slamming the door shut behind you.
you collapse onto your bed, your hands trembling as you unlock your phone. you press dakoda's name in your call log. it barely rings twice before he picks up. "are you home?"
you sniff, wiping at your face. "yeah."
there's a pause, and then, "what's wrong?"
a sob wracks through you as you press the heel of your palm against your forehead. "they-" you choke on your words, sucking in a shaky breath. "they don't want me to see you anymore."
"because of the fight?"
you nod before realizing he can't see you. "yeah." you swallow hard. "they think you're reckless and dangerous and—" you let out a weak laugh, bitter and exhausted. "my dad said he doesn't trust me when i'm with you."
dakoda lets out a sigh. "that's bullshit."
"i know," you whisper, another tear slipping down your cheek.
he's quiet for a second before asking, "what does this mean?"
"i don't know." you reply. "but i don't want to stop seeing you."
"i don't want that either." he pauses. "but i don't want to make things worse for you at home, y/n. i don't want to be the reason you're fighting with your family."
you shake your head quickly. "they don't understand, koda. they weren't there. they didn't see what happened. they just see a video and think they know everything."
"i know. we'll figure this out, okay? just don't shut me out."
you nod. "i won't."
"promise?"
your door opens and you turn around to find your mom in the doorway. "i promise."
"tell him." she says, crossing her arms over her chest.
"i already did." you tell her, sitting up. "we were just about to hang up."
she shakes her head. "no. i want to hear you say it."
you grip the phone tighter. "why are you doing this. it's already hard enough as it is."
she walks further into your room. “maybe he should think before throwing punches when you’re with him. actions have consequences, y/n.”
"i already told you it wasn't like that. that guy called me a slut and dakoda was just sticking up for-."
“it doesn’t matter how it was,” she cuts you off. “you think the world sees it that way? no, they see a college boy getting into a fight at a party, and you, my daughter, caught in the middle of it. i won’t let you put yourself in that situation again, now tell him or i will.”
you sigh and put the phone back up to your ear. “koda”
it's quiet for a couple seconds until he finally says, “i’m still here."
“we can’t see each other anymore.”
silence.
"you don’t mean that.”
you inhale shakily. “we have to.”
"okay.”
"i’m sorry.”
“i know."
your mom watches as you end the call, placing your phone face down on your nightstand.
she lets out a slow sigh, like she’s relieved. “this is for the best.”
you don’t say anything. you just lie back down, turning your back to her.
the door closes a moment later, and the second she’s gone, you reach for your phone again to text dakoda.
you: you do know that i wasn't being serious right i just needed her to believe that i ended it.
dakoda<3: yea i know but how are things going to work now you aren't going to be able to come here
you: we'll figure that out when we get there i'm sure ari will cover for me.
dakoda<3: i just don't want you to get in more trouble
you: i won't
︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵time skip‿︵‿︵︵‿︵‿︵‿
it's friday and you, dakoda, and ari all came up with a plan. you are 'staying' at her house this weekend and dakoda somehow convinced tommy to let him use his truck to pick you up so you can leave your car there.
"you're absolutely sure you want to do this?" ari asks, pacing around her room.
"if you aren't comfortable with it just tell me and i won't."
ari stops pacing and looks at you. "i just don't understand why your parents care so much. like he got in the fight to protect you. dakoda isn't one to fight unless he absolutely has to."
"because of my future. the future that they have all planned out and i have no say so."
"that isn't right. speaking of your future though, have you told dakoda that you got into umich yet?"
you shake your head. "no, i'll probably tell him today."
your phone goes off and it's a text from him.
dakoda<3: here
you:be out in a sec
"he's here." you tell her, standing up.
"i got this, don't worry."
"thank you. i owe you big time."
"just say hi to michael for me."
you stop walking and spin around to face her. "michael?"
"go." she smiles. "we can talk about it when you come back."
"i'll text you." you shake your head, walking over to the door.
"have fun and don't do anything stupid."
"i won't."

The Dark Crystal:
Now!!! A family favorite!! The Dark Crystal! It was my favorite movie to watch as a child, though it was made before I was born, it was still amazing to me. It was realeased in 1982, this movie featured the puppets created by the director: Jim Henson. That's right the same director from the labyrinth (which also featured his puppets).
Most of the movie was souly his puppets, plus a couple running seens from a look alike stunt double. Making it look like the main character was actually running.
Quotes:
Aughra:
Ya look like Gelfling...
Aughra:
SMELL like Gelfling...
Aughra:
maybe y'ARE Gelfling!
Plot summary:
A millennium ago on the planet Thra, two new races appeared when a shard was shattered from the Crystal of Truth: the malevolent Skeksis whose continued corruption of the Crystal to extend their lives ravaged Thra, and the gentle urRu, more commonly known as the Mystics, who made their home in the Valley of Stones to await for their destiny. The leader of the urRu, the Master UrSu, raised a young Gelfling named Jen whose clan were slaughtered by the Skeksis. As the Great Conjunction of Thra's three suns draws near, a dying UrSu instructs Jen to fulfill a prophecy to heal the Crystal by first retrieving the Shard from Aughra. As UrSu passes, the Skeksis' Emperor, skekSo, also dies, leaving the position for the leader vacant. The Skeksis Chamberlain, skekSil, and the General, skekUng, challenge each other to a duel of succession, which results in skekUng defeating skekSil in a "Trial by Stone". SkekSil is stripped of his robes and exiled, while skekUng is proclaimed the Skeksis' new emperor. When the Skeksis learn of Jen's existence, they send their army of giant crab-like Garthim to capture him, with skekSil following.
Jen meets Aughra and enters her orrery, which she uses to predict the motions of the heavens as she explains about the Conjunction before having Jen select the Shard from a box full of shards. Aughra was about to explain Jen's mission before the Garthim arrive and destroy the orrery, taking Aughra prisoner as Jen flees. Hearing the call of the Crystal, the urRu leave their valley to travel to the Skeksis' Castle. On his journey through the swamp, Jen meets Kira, another surviving Gelfling who can communicate with animals. The two learn more about each other when they accidentally "dreamfast", seeing into each other's memories. They stay for a night with the Podlings who raised Kira, only for them and Kira's pet Fizzgig to flee when the Garthim raid the village. They are nearly caught by one of the Garthim, but skekSil intervenes by stalling it in its tracks, effectively keeping the Garthim from pursuing them.
Jen and Kira discover a ruined Gelfling city with ancient writing describing a prophecy: "When single shines the triple sun, what was sundered and undone shall be whole, the two made one by Gelfling hand or else by none." They are interrupted by skekSil, revealing the prophecy was the reason for the Gelfling genocide while trying to trick them into coming with him to the castle under false pretenses. But the Gelflings run off and reach the Castle of the Crystal on Landstriders, intercepting the Garthim that attacked Kira's village. While trying to free the captured Podlings, Kira, Jen, and Fizzgig descend to the bottom of the Castle's dry moat and use a lower-level entrance to gain access. But they are intercepted by skekSil, who once again attempts to convince the Gelflings to come with him, even attempting to drag them there when they refuse him further. Jen stabs skekSil's hand with the crystal shard in defiance, and skekSil, in a fit of rage, buries Jen in a cave-in and takes Kira to the Skeksis. skekSil is reinstated as Chamberlain while giving Kira to the Skeksis' Scientist, skekTek, to be drained of her life essence for skekUng to drink so that he can regain his youth. Aughra, imprisoned in the Scientist's laboratory, tells Kira to call for help from the captive animals; they break free in response and free Kira while causing skekTek to fall down the crystal shaft to his death. The very moment of skekTek's death, his urRu counterpart, urTih, vanishes in a burst of flame. Aughra frees herself soon after Kira left and before Jen arrived.
The three suns begin to align as the Gelflings reunite at the Crystal Chamber as the Skeksis gather for the ritual that will grant them immortality. Jen leaps onto the Dark Crystal but drops the Shard, with Kira taking it after Fizzgig is knocked down the crystal shaft by skekUng (he is saved by Aughra shortly after). Kira throws the Shard back to Jen as she is fatally stabbed from behind by skekZok, the Skeksis' Ritual-Master, and an enraged Jen inserts the Shard into the Crystal, fulfilling the prophecy. The Garthim disintegrate and the Podling slaves regain their essence while the dark stone covering the Castle crumbles away to reveal a crystalline structure. The urRu arrive and use the Crystal to merge themselves and the Skeksis into the beings they once were: the tall, glowing, and angelic urSkeks. The urSkeks' leader explains to Jen they had mistakenly shattered the Crystal long ago, splitting them into two races and decimating Thra, and that Jen's actions have restored them. The urSkeks revive Kira in gratitude for her sacrifice and Jen's courage, and then ascend to a higher level of existence, leaving the Crystal to the Gelflings on the now-rejuvenated Thra. (Wiki)

Outside the Midnight Hour
@deancaswc ; @thursdays-fallen-angel vs. @jimminovak Prompt: Book Title “Outside the Midnight Hour” Word count: 3.1k Rating: T Summary: Dean has a chance to be cast in the movie of a lifetime, but it’s down to the author of the film’s source material to decide if he’s going to get the job or not.
When Dean’s agent calls him, he’s sure that it’s going to be with a rejection. Based on the vibe Dean had gotten in the audition room, the amount of money going into this project—there’s no way in hell they’re going to take him.
After all, this film isn’t like any other that Dean has even so much as auditioned for, let alone been a part of. A paranormal, action-based movie with a heavy focus on psychological aspects and themes of self-exploration? With that much going on, it’s going to have to be perfect.
And the director, Cain Mullen, is one of the best in the industry. He won’t accept anything less than perfection, anyway.
Which is why Dean answers his phone with, “Alright, lay it on me. How embarrassed do I have to be for even trying for this thing?”
There’s a beat of silence on the other end of the line, and then Charlie asks, “What the hell are you talking about?”
Dean slumps down onto his couch, his pout directed up at the ceiling. It’s a decent apartment in a decent area of LA, but overall, nothing to write home about; being an up and coming actor doesn’t quite have the same pizazz to it as being a fully-fledged one does.
If he had just landed this gig…
He sighs into his phone. “Beyond the Midnight Hour. Cain didn’t seem all that impressed during my reading, so how bad is it looking? Maybe I should stick to mediocre romcoms and B-list horror stuff.”
Charlie makes a sound of outrage in reply, and when she speaks next, her voice has taken on that unmistakable, I am your agent and that means I know best, mister, attitude. “Dean Winchester, you are better than those movies, and one day I’m going to make you believe it. And guess what! That day is today, so strap in, bucko.”
Dean blinks. Thats sounding an awful lot like she’s saying…
“Strap in for what, Charlie?”
He can practically hear his agent’s wolfish grin. “You’ve got a meeting, Winchester. A couple people at the studio want to talk to you.”
Dean sits up so quickly that his head spins—or is that happening anyway? “You mean I—?”
“You’re one of two choices,” Charlie is quick to cut in, and there’s the other shoe that Dean knew had to be waiting somewhere. “But Dean, it’s looking really good. The director and a few producers want to talk to you, maybe run you through some more lines, and then they’ll make their decision.”
Okay. Okay, Dean can handle that. One-on-one with another actor, and if he comes out ahead, he could potentially be the lead of the movie of the year. Should be easy enough. All he has to do is win over the directors and producers. Right?
He takes a deep breath, determination taking root. “Alright, Charlie. Send me the details.”
~
Dean arrives at the studio’s main office only a few hours after Charlie’s call, dressed in his best with his stomach twisted into knots. A receptionist leads him to a conference room that has been set up like an informal get-together space, with the table pushed off to the side of the room and an array of basic snacks and drinks spread across it.
There are only two other people in the room, one of whom Dean recognizes immediately.
Cain appears to be deep in conversation with the room’s one other occupant, but he looks up when Dean enters, and his face splits into a grin. “Ah, Mr. Winchester! I’m so glad you could join us.”
Cain crosses the room and grabs Dean’s hand for a firm, overexcited handshake. Dean tries his best not to gape like a damn fish the whole time, but he only barely manages to return the handshake by the time Cain moves on.
“I trust your agent explained to you what we’re looking for today,” the director says, a heavy hand now laying on Dean’s shoulder. “Our team is in a dead split between casting you or Michael Godson as our lead, and that means we’ve brought it down to our tiebreaker.”
Multiple alarms immediately begin to ring in Dean’s mind. A dead split? Him and Michael Godson? Charlie hadn’t made it sound quite so dire, and she definitely hadn’t told Dean who his competition was—though it’s probably fair that she didn’t, because if she had, there’s no way Dean would have shown up at all.
Michael is a pro with a resume that’s a hell of a lot better than Dean’s. Dean might have some decent acting chops, but if it comes down to it, in what setting could he ever possibly hope to beat Michael?
He croaks out, feeling slightly faint, “Tiebreaker, huh?”
Cain nods, then uses the hand he has on Dean’s shoulder to lead him over to the man he had previously been talking to. The guy has been hovering since Dean arrived, looking awkward in the background, and Dean tries not to look as wary as he feels when they are introduced.
Who is he? A producer? Some random pick from the crew? He definitely doesn’t seem confident in this environment, and he’s gorgeous enough that Dean knows he would remember if he’d seen him before. He looks like he’s straight out of every chick flick Dean has ever seen, with his dark, tousled hair and perfect, pink lips.
“Dean, this is Castiel Novak. You might know him as his pen name, CJ Novak—he is the author of the novel Beyond the Midnight Hour is based upon.”
Dean’s mouth goes dry. “Oh,” he says without quite meaning to. He’s heard of CJ Novak. Then, with as much enthusiasm as he can muster and a hand stuck out in Castiel’s direction, “It’s great to meet you, man. I didn’t realize this was based on a book, but based on how awesome the cut-down screenplay version is looking, you must be an amazing author.”
Castiel’s cheeks dust pink, and he belatedly accepts Dean’s offered hand. His palm is smooth and warm against Dean’s own. “Thank you, Mr. Winchester. That’s very kind of you to say.”
Once the handshake has ended, Dean gives Castiel the most charming smile he can muster. It’s not as easily managed as he might have liked, with his nerves ratcheting up as quickly as they are, but—he’s pursuing a career in acting for a reason. He can do this.
And Dean isn’t an idiot. Cain said they needed a tiebreaker, so who better to make the final decision than the man who created the story that’s being put to screen? Dean isn’t going to resort to flirting or anything so cheap to try to win the author over, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be as charismatic as possible.
“I really do want to read it,” he says, now that a beat has passed after Castiel’s thanks. “How different is—”
At that moment, there’s a knock against the conference room door. It swings inward to reveal a pair of unfamiliar faces. “Cain?” one of them calls. “Can we steal you for a second?”
“Of course.” Cain smiles at the pair in the doorway, then turns back to Dean and Castiel to clap a hand to each of their shoulders. “I’ll be back shortly. I’ll see about rounding up the rest of the producers, too, before Michael arrives. Play nice, you two.”
Cain strides out of the room without a backwards glance. When the door closes behind him, the conference room is thrown into an awkward silence. Dean and Castiel both stare at the door instead of each other. Castiel shifts his weight from one foot to the other; Dean clears his throat. They end up turning to each other at the exact same time.
“Well, I guess—”
“I feel like I should apologize—”
Each of them cuts off. Dean’s smile turns sheepish, and Castiel presses his lips together in embarrassment.
“Uh—sorry.” Dean forces himself to chuckle and rubs uncomfortably at the back of his neck. Smooth, Winchester. “What do you want to apologize for?”
“I was going to apologize in advance for being as socially awkward as I am,” Castiel confesses with a chuckle that’s far more authentic than Dean’s had been. “But I think I proved myself quickly enough on that matter. Cain promised me he wouldn’t leave me alone, and yet…”
Oh. Well. Now Dean feels even more awkward. He tries to push through it. “Well, I can’t exactly say anything for Cain ditching you with me, but I’ll try not to make this any harder on you than it has to be. I’m a chill guy, I promise.”
Castiel squints at him like he doesn’t know how to interpret that statement. Dean’s confidence begins to fizzle.
He swallows hard. “Anyways, uh. I know actors tend to be flashy assholes, but that’s not my style. My little brother’s a quiet type, too, so believe me when I say that’s something I can handle. He’s going through law school right now. Pretty different path than the one I’m on.”
Castiel tilts his head at that, intrigued. “Those are definitely very different paths,” he agrees. “Your brother wants to serve people, and you want to entertain them. Why?”
Dean shrugs. “Just our lots in life, I guess. Sam’s always been a brainiac. Reading, writing, following along with political activist groups. I modelled a bit when I was a teenager, and I followed that line of work to make sure I stayed employed. Money’s important when you’re raising a kid sibling as your own.”
“Raising him as your own?” Castiel echoes, but Dean is sure that they’ve already discussed this more than they should. They’re not here to talk about him.
Or, well. Maybe they are, in a way. But not like this. His personal drama doesn’t mean a damn thing, as far as his career is concerned.
“How different is Beyond the Midnight Hour the book from Beyond the Midnight Hour the movie?”
“Oh. Um.” Castiel clears his throat, but thankfully has the good grace to let the subject be changed. He settles his weight back on his heels as he switches to thinking about a subject he’s actually familiar with. Dean can see how much it relaxes him; the difference in his posture is like night and day. “Actually, the novel I wrote is called Outside the Midnight Hour. After the film rights were sold, the studio came to me with the idea of changing it for the movie adaptation. Something about original titles and alphabetic preference, I don’t fully remember. I was too happy to be getting a movie to care.”
“Oh.” Dean wrinkles his nose without thinking. “You weren’t offended by that? I mean, you must have worked your ass off to write that book, and then after all that, some studio mooks decided to just change the title for their own reasons? The title can be the trickiest part of the whole book, right? That doesn’t sound fair.”
Castiel blinks rapidly, then stares at Dean in what seems to be a stunned silence. It takes a while for him for respond, and when he does, there’s a distant note to his voice. “I… I hadn’t actually thought about it in those terms. I wasn’t offended, but… Should I have been?”
Dean shrugs. “I don’t know. If you aren’t offended, you aren’t offended, I don’t have any right to tell you how to feel. You seem like a good guy, though, Castiel—”
“Cas.”
Dean loses his grip on his rant. “What?”
Castiel’s cheeks have turned pink again. “A lot of my friends call me Cas.”
“Oh. Cas. Okay.” Dean’s face feels a bit warmer than usual now, too, because—is it just him, or does that make it sound like the two of them are becoming friends? Maybe it’s a bit too early for them to actually be at that point, but if nothing else, it’s definitely an invitation.
He clears his throat and makes an effort to remember what it was he had been saying. “Um—anyway. If you’re not offended about the title thing, that’s fine. I probably shouldn’t be saying shit that might pit you against the studio, anyway. Not if I want this job.”
“I’ve already signed my contracts,” Cas says, waving his hand in a vague gesture. “I can’t be turned against anyone. But your perspective is… interesting.” He assesses Dean for a moment, then asks, “If I were to tell you that I was offended by the change in title. What would you do about it?”
The answer to that is an easy one. Dean knows what he would do without a second of hesitation. And, even though he swears he can hear Charlie’s voice in the back of his mind telling him that it’s a bad idea, he gives that answer to Cas.
“If you weren’t into it, I wouldn’t do this movie. I know I already said this, but the screenplay is fucking incredible. You created a great story with great characters. If this movie didn’t respect your vision and earn your support, I wouldn’t want to support it, either.”
Cas’ expression goes slack with the force of his surprise. Dean can’t blame him for the reaction; he’s sure it’s not what Michael would have said.
(Dean has never met the guy, but he seems like a stuck-up prick, so he doesn’t exactly have any desire to. He knows enough from interviews and general gossip, thanks.)
“Why would you give up this film?” Cas asks—demands, really. Once he gets a grip on his surprise, he verges on being angry. “I know your work history, so I know this project is a huge opportunity for you. You told me that you started acting with the hopes of supporting your brother. This would be a better paycheck than any you have ever seen, which could help both of you. So why the hell would my opinion of something as inane as the title convince you to give up your chance?”
“Well… not just the title..” Maybe his logic doesn’t feel quite as sound now that Cas has thrown it back at him like that, but that doesn’t mean Dean is going to change his mind. “It’s your story. I’m just some guy who might be allowed to act it out. One of those things is way more important than the other.”
Cas reels back slightly. “Dean Winchester,” he starts to say, but for a long moment, nothing follows it. Dean waits, feeling uneasy (and definitely like he has blown his chance and used this alone time with Cas all wrong).
Then Cas finishes, “Dean Winchester, you are phenomenal.” In the same breath, he turns his head toward the conference room door and shouts, “Cain?”
It only takes a handful of seconds for Cain to appear, opening the door and strolling through it without a care in the world. There’s no one with him, Michael or otherwise. Dean frowns.
“Any thoughts, Castiel?” Cain asks, casting a cautious look in Dean’s direction. Cas is quick to answer him, though, redrawing his attention completely.
“Dean is the one. I would like him to have the role over Michael.”
Dean’s has just about hits the floor. He turns to Cas, abruptly feeling dizzy and certainly not understanding what the hell is happening. “What? But I… I haven’t even been in the same room as him, yet. Why would you pick me? I mean, his name alone—”
Cas cuts him off with a shake of his head. “I already spoke with Michael earlier in the day. When he thought he had a few, secret minutes alone with me, he spent his time trying to impress me with his reputation and connections. He flat-out offered to introduce me to my favorite actor if he was given the part.”
Dean blinks. “And you didn’t want to take him up on that?”
Cas shakes his head and graces Dean with a small, secret kind of smile. “I think I have a new favorite actor now, anyway. And he’s much kinder. He cares about the work itself instead of just getting the job. Better looking, too, if I’m being honest.”
Cain muffles a chuckle behind his hand. Dean stares up at him in surprise; Cas is so absorbing that Dean already managed to forget that he came back into the room. And when he does look up, the director offers Dean his hand. “I’m looking forward to working with you, Dean. I’ll make sure everything you’ll need to look through gets sent along to your agent.”
“I—” Dean swallows hard. He’s dangerously close to getting choked up, but he eagerly shakes Cain’s hand nonetheless. “Thank you, sir. I’m looking forward to working with you, too. I appreciate this opportunity.”
There. Charlie would be proud of him for that line.
Dean can sense that the meeting (or ambush, really, since that’s what it turned out to be) is going to come to an end now that the casting decision has been declared. Part of him feels like he should keep his mouth shut and let that happen, not push his luck, but as soon as Cas starts to walk away from him, presumably toward the door, something like panic grips at Dean, and he instinctively reaches after him.
“Hey Cas, wait up—” Dean leaves Cain Mullen behind in favor of catching Castiel Novak by his elbow. Cas is slow to turn around to look at him, and when he does, his blue eyes have gone round with surprise. And god, with a face like that, how is this guy just the brains behind the story? It’s almost ridiculous.
Nerves bubble through Dean, and he gently releases Cas’ elbow. Neither of them moves to put any additional space between them, though.
“I was just, uh. I was wondering.” Shit, when did Dean become so bad at this? “Do you want to maybe… grab coffee? Or something? You know, new favorite actor to new favorite author? You never did tell me how different Outside the Midnight Hour is from its movie adaptation.”
Cas stares at him. “I suppose I didn’t,” he concedes. Then, after a moment of deliberation, a smile steadily stretches across his features, lighting him up. “Favorite actor to favorite author, you say?”
Dean feigns a casual shrug. “Kinder and better looking than any other author I know.”
It’s right then that Dean learns that, when Cas smiles widely enough, his nose and eyes wrinkle with it. He already loves the look of it, even before it turns out to accompany the words, “I would very much like to get coffee with you.”

I come here to destroy you. And then to get home, I have to be the one who creates you. But I will say, it's been an education. Watching you grow up all these years. Science fairs and soccer games. No hint, no sign, no trace of the man you will be one day for whom I have nothing but hate. And to be clear, nothing is forgiven. There will be a reckoning. I promise you, Barry Allen, that you will die."
220. There Will be Blood (The Flash 6x4)

163, Written by: Emilio Ortega Aldrich, Elizabeth Kim, Directed by: Katie Cassidy

101, Written by: Wendy Mercile, Beth Schwartz, Directed by: Antionio Negret
"There's two types of every legacy, two versions of what we leave behind. There's the good and then the bad. You just really have a lousy habit of focusing only on the bad."
211. Haywire (Superman & Lois 1x4)
4, Written by: Michael Narducci, Directed by: James Bamford

Bullet the blue sky drums

You can hear Zack de la Rocha in Bono's vocals, Tom Morello in the guitar work, Tim Commerford in the bass and Brad Wilk in the drums. I don't think there's any way that Rage Against the Machine, which formed four years after this song came out, could deny that it was a direct influence. Bono begins by growling out a few verses, but his theatrics serve this type of song well. Larry Mullen starts it with that solid beat, and then the song really takes off into grungier, more dangerous territory. It's a refreshing departure from the sentimental, syrupy quality of "With or Without You," and I like the direction it's going. That said, "Bullet the Blue Sky" is a pretty sweet song. The '80s, defined by characters like Morrissey, Michael Jackson and Madonna, had different standards for what you might consider "overly dramatic." But their schmaltz seems sincere, while to me, Bono's doesn't. It's hard to put my finger on what it is about U2 that doesn't do it for me, but I'm beginning to think it's just Bono's melodramatic theatrics. I could go on and list the entire discography, but that could get tedious.ġ0.As I get into the second cut, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," an inkling of apathy starts to creep back. Other ones to mention - Seconds, Like A Song, The Unforgettable Fire etc. Streets is, like WGRYWH, such a driving force behind the song, if that doesn't get people jumping, I don't know what can Mysterious Ways is probably the grooviest out there Acrobat's probably the most unique rhythm ever contrived because of its onortodox time sig. Zoo Station - I know it's not necessarily his most complex piece of rhythm but THE BASS coming from the drums on the Vertigo Tour, fuck me - it could have knocked down the walls of Jericho on its own. Sunday Bloody Sunday has got to rate highly in my opinion, I don't know if there's anyone who knows rock music and doesn't know that song when they hear the intro The Fly is definitely up there, it's so frenetic and mad, like the song itself Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses - it's such a different kind of rhythm to other stuff out there and is just part of what proves to be an epic song I pretty much agree with you on all of the ones you've mentioned, other than In God's Country because it's not a beat that I can remember without listening to it lol. I Will Follow old school larry at his finest Acrobat driving force behind this masterpieceĨ Bullet The Blue Sky especially live this one is insane.ĩ.Whos gonna ride your wild hoses love it love it love it.ġ0. The Fly everyone always raves about the guitar in this song (which is amazing ) but the drums deserve their dueĥ.In God's Country watch the RH version, that left hand floor tom is not only awesome but difficult.Ħ. God part 2 Larry is the master of the floor tom, first time I heard this I said man that is gonna be hardĤ. Bad the driving snare and the off time hi- hat make this one a must playģ. Streets love to play this one, it exhaustingĢ. When I was a teenager that is how I learned to play ,listenening to the entire catalog and jamming along. I am a drummer and have always had alot of fun playing all of U2's stuff. Originally posted by bones44044Always appreciated the man, the cute one ,the driving force, just wanted to know how you rate his best.

Series Four Filming press release
With fans still reeling from the climactic events of series three, the fourth series of BBC One's much loved drama Poldark begins filming this week. Adapted by Debbie Horsfield from the novels by Winston Graham and produced by Mammoth Screen this eight part series, starring Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson as his wife Demelza, will film across Cornwall, the West Country and locations in London for transmission next year. 1796: Ross (Turner) must defend Cornwall from an empowered George Warleggan (Jack Farthing), and risks everything he holds dear as he embarks on a political journey which takes him to the nation's capital. Demelza (Tomlinson) finds her loyalties torn, Elizabeth (Heida Reed) tries to strengthen her marriage, Morwenna (Ellise Chappell) continues to be oppressed by husband Reverend Ossie Whitworth (Christian Brassington), and the Enyses (Luke Norris and Gabriella Wilde) are tested as never before. Two powerful new characters enter the saga, as Rebecca Front (War And Peace, The Thick Of It) is Lady Whitworth, Ossie’s formidable mother, and Max Bennett (The Hollow Crown) is Monk Adderley, an unscrupulous society figure who is on a collision course with the Poldarks. Also back for series four are Harry Richardson and Tom York as Drake and Sam Carne, Beatie Edney as Prudie and Josh Whitehouse as Lieutenant Hugh Armitage, who remains deeply in love with Demelza. Poldark has a strong returning audience averaging 6.7m consolidated viewers and a further 1m BBC iPlayer requests per episode across all three series. Mammoth executive producer Karen Thrussell says: "We were hugely gratified by the massive amount of love the audience felt for series three. We hope this will be our strongest series yet, with eight brilliant scripts from Debbie Horsfield, a whole new world of stories and our very wonderful cast. In this series Ross and Demelza will face new challenges and try to turn their backs on old ghosts. Ross strives to become a better man, but his dark and reckless streak is never far from the surface and will lead to him facing new enemies and suffering great losses." Elizabeth Kilgarriff, BBC Executive Producer, said: “The BBC One viewers adore Poldark and we can’t thank them enough for their continued support across the last three series. The hard work and dedication of the production team and cast is why the show just keeps getting better. Debbie’s scripts for series four are some of the best yet, and I can't wait to share what she has in store with the fans!” Poldark is adapted by Debbie Horsfield (Age Before Beauty, Cutting It, The Riff Raff Element) produced by Michael Ray (Poldark) and directed by Joss Agnew (Mr Selfridge, Jekyll And Hyde) and Brian Kelly (The Loch, Outlander). Debbie Horsfield continues to serve as executive producer alongside Tom Mullens, Karen Thrussell and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for the BBC. Filming will take place across Cornwall and around Bristol, including the Bottle Yard Studios, over the coming months and the series will transmit in 2018 on BBC One.

L.A. Weekly: A Look Back at 40 Years of Irreverence and Devotion to L.A.
When editor-founder Jay Levin had the mad idea to start a weekly alternative newspaper in Los Angeles in 1978, corralling a small group of investors including actor Michael Douglas, there were already such notable predecessors as Los Angeles Free Press and the Village Voice. But Levin's L.A. Weekly soon tapped into — and helped to propel — a riotous explosion in art, music, fashion, film and literature that had long been simmering around the Southland and by the late '70s had begun welling up with a force that could no longer be contained in the underground.
The city's newspapers of record, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and the Los Angeles Times, were fairly conservative back then, and the two publications' cultural coverage generally centered on the mainstream preoccupations and vanities of their perceived audience of mostly white, mostly male and mostly upper- and middle-class readers. Some of the more perceptive writers at both papers made fitful attempts to tap into the burgeoning local interest in underground film, art and punk rock, for instance, but there were suddenly dozens of events at new venues every week that escaped notice or were too subversive to merit the full attention of those two staid newspapers.
If nothing else, L.A. Weekly quickly filled a void that hadn't existed a few years earlier — a void of a void, if you will — eventually outdistancing such local alt-weekly rivals as Los Angeles Reader by having more comprehensive calendar listings of both mainstream and indie films as well as compiling virtually every major concert and tiny gig at local dives every week, alongside extensive listings for dance, theater, readings, politics and other events. These weren't just flat, dry recitations of show dates and times; wise-ass music writers such as the late Scott Morrow, classical-music maven Mary Beth Crain and music critic Jonny Whiteside took gleeful delight in goring the prevailing sacred cows of the 1980s (Whiteside continues to do so today) while championing iconoclastic new performers several years before the rest of the world caught up to them. Early editor/co-founder/publisher Joie Davidow had a lot to do with setting the tone of the newspaper's style and vision, and her efforts to make the Weekly embrace all the local sub-scenes in art and fashion were carried on in part by longtime calendar editor Sharon Bell.
As L.A. Weekly grew over the course of its first decade, the paper expanded to encompass a variety of distractions and provocations, from Matt Groening's "Life in Hell" comic (which continued running every week for years, long after the artist found fame as the creator of The Simpsons) to other recurring strips and columns by Lynda Barry, Carol Lay, Lalo Alcaraz and Robbie Conal, among others. The newspaper also championed the work of numerous artful and, on occasion, even daringly brave photographers, from Ted Soqui to Virginia Lee Hunter and many others. Hollywood punk princess Pleasant Gehman launched an audacious gossip column, "L.A. Dee Da," that was carried on over the years in evolving formats by archly witty and remorselessly wicked modern-day Rona Barretts such as Kim Jones and, later, Belissa Cohen. The Weekly's long-running astrology column, "Rocky Horoscope" by Rockie Gardiner, was a multilayered piece of scripture that traced the patterns and cycles of celestial bodies with an astronomical precision while being inlaid with cryptic riddles and pop-culture references that were richer, more detailed and, more often than not, uncannily accurate in mapping out readers' futures than generic horoscopes.
Throughout the '80s and into the early '90s, the Weekly was loaded with a diverse and motley assortment of distinctive columnists, staffers and freelance contributors such as Michael Ventura, Ginger Varney, Harlan Ellison and Steve Erickson. Early music editor Jonathan Gold eventually switched to covering restaurants — and not the stodgy, European-style "fine-dining" establishments that most other publications were focused on, as he ravenously tore through and explored this city's wide variety of cultures and street foods. Gold's replacement as music editor, former Bags guitarist Craig Lee, ushered in an era of wildly provocative, untamed writers such as Germs drummer Don Bolles, the incomparable punk stylist Shredder, the quietly subversive Felicia Dominguez and longtime staffer and prog-experimental connoisseur John Payne. Payne eventually was appointed music editor in the 1990s, following a series of more mainstream-minded editors who had often moved away from in-depth coverage of the paper's bread and butter and early raison d'etre, the local underground music scene. Under Lee and Payne, with input from associate music editor/unconventional jazz-metal critic Greg Burk, the Weekly's music coverage would evolve from fannish, punk-style writing to more in-depth, provocative, contemplative and/or insightful musings from such luminaries as Ernest Hardy, classical-music columnist Alan Rich and punk pioneer Brendan Mullen.

Both Lee and Payne recognized the rich variety of local music that was occurring across an increasingly wide variety of genres. Payne also revived L.A. Weekly's music awards for a short spell, after Lee started the annual series of popular award show/concerts in the late '80s.
During the Weekly's first decade, the newspaper was thoroughly unpredictable, with a sense of anarchy and frantic deadline excitement in the crowded, chaotic newsrooms in Silver Lake infusing the articles and columns with a freewheeling, jubilant, messy wildness. The atmosphere in the office was as eclectic as the content, with the likes of Ron Athey and Vaginal Davis (both renowned performance artists today), managing editor Kateri Butler, designers Bill Smith and John Curry, and music and art lovers in the production department, such as L7's Donita Sparks and The Mutts' Jacques Olivier.
After Levin stepped down from his multiple roles running the newspaper in 1992, the Weekly was sold and resold to a variety of sober-minded corporations including, at one point, a pet food company. The company expanded its copyediting and fact-checking departments, and the paper's prized news coverage headed in a more responsible and comprehensive journalistic direction in the following 20 years, with such dogged and persistent reporters, columnists and editors as Christine Pelisek, Patrick Range McDonald, David Zahniser, Gene Maddaus, Dennis Romero, Marc Cooper and Harold Meyerson breaking numerous important stories while confronting local, state and federal politicians with an unsentimental, unbiased and cynical perspective missing from other publications.

Much of the frenetic and boundary-pushing atmosphere of the old Weekly faded away under the various corporate owners, but newer writers in the '90s and beyond — such as incisive film editor Manohla Dargis, thoughtful film critic Ella Taylor, provocative columnist Erin Aubry Kaplan, witty staff writer Gendy Alimurung, fervent and tireless theater editor Steven Lee Morris, theater critics Lovell Estell III, Deborah Klugman and Bill Raden, and art mavens Peter Frank, Ralph Rugoff and Doug Harvey, among others — instilled a sense of higher, more intellectual standards while mixing their prose with unconventional imagery and revisionist views.
In the early '90s, Cohen's column became a celebratory yet skewering scenester chronicle everyone wanted to be in, while the Weekly's calendar section under Bell and the especially clever and irreverent writer Libby Molyneaux became the true bible of L.A., its extensive listings leaving little out in terms of things to do in Los Angeles. Pre-internet, L.A. Weekly's free print edition was in every record store, movie theater, cool retail shop and kiosk all over town, providing a guide to the city like no other, with special issues such as the Best of L.A., and issues dedicated to L.A. music, food and, later, the People issue (which grew out of the paper's "Considerable Town" offshoot column called "Considerable People"), experimenting designwise with multiple covers and glossy magazine stock versus its usual newsprint.

Having moved from its Silver Lake digs to the former Hollywood Reporter building on Sunset in the early '90s, the Weekly found its spiritual home in many ways. Mike Lacey's New Times Media took over the paper in 2002, in a complex deal with Village Voice Media (the parent company of L.A. Weekly until last year) that saw Jill Stewart replace news editor Alan Mittelstaedt. With editor-in-chief Laurie Ochoa at the helm along with associate editor Joe Donnelly, the Weekly went on to win more national journalism awards than any other alternative newspaper in the country (including a Pulitzer Prize for food writing for Ochoa's husband, Gold, in 2007).
By this time the influence of the web was undeniable, and more and more of the Weekly's content was migrating online, including popular pop culture–driven columns by Dave Shulman, Henry Rollins and Nikki Finke, whose "Deadline Hollywood" column became a watchdog for the entertainment industry. LAWeekly.com incorporated online slideshows and some video as well. In 2008, the Weekly's offices moved once again, this time to Culver City. VVM took the opportunity to issue budget cuts that saw many staffers ousted, including — despite the staff's successes — the top editors.

The most requested cover in L.A. Weekly history was the issue covering the death of Michael Jackson.
L.A. Weekly
Lacey had sold the Weekly to Voice Media Group in 2012 and the paper went through several personnel changes in the years that followed. But it always maintained a hard-working staff and a network of passionate freelancers, who continued to publish important stories reflecting the culture of Los Angeles with dedicated reverence, garnering many awards in the process. In 2017, VMG announced the sale of L.A. Weekly. It was purchased by Semanal Media in December of that year, with longtime art director Darrick Rainey named editor-in-chief and contributors who'd been working with the publication from several decades before joining the staff. The offices moved once again, in spring of this year, to the heart of downtown Los Angeles.
Through the country's most tragic and triumphant times, through the paper's own historical high points and low points, through acclaim and controversy, L.A. Weekly has endured, calling out injustices in social and political spheres, shining a spotlight on the city's creative culture, art and music, and bringing together a variety of voices and perspectives that reflect and embody our city and our world — male and female; cis and LGBTQ; Caucasian and people of color; young and old. Everyone who contributed in the past 40 years is part of this rich legacy. Here's to four more decades of doing so with the same expository vision, thoughtful approach and unfettered devotion.

Not long after President Donald Trump put “everybody on warning” on Monday, promising U.S. service members and law enforcement officers would crush the protest movement at his direction, the military was mobilizing. Multiple cargo planes, carrying active-duty soldiers and supplies from North Carolina and New York, flew into an airfield just outside the District of Columbia. Members of the National Guard rumbled around the capital region in armored vehicles to predetermined positions. And twin-engine UH-60 Black Hawk and UH-72 Lakota helicopters began sweeping just above the tree-line over the capital’s streets, blasting an awestruck crowd of protestors below with a downwash of air, debris and fuel exhaust.
Monday’s show of force may have intended to demonstrate that Trump had the situation under control in Washington, but it had the unintended effect of unnerving many current and former military leaders about the President’s eagerness to brandish the nation’s armed services as a way to crush domestic turmoil. The overriding concern is that Trump is once again wielding the armed forces for personal gain, rather than national interests, and threatening the military’s longstanding reputation for non-partisanship.
“The military should not be employed during peaceful protests. This is the responsibility of police and local officials,” said Chuck Hagel, a former U.S. Defense Secretary, Republican Senator from Nebraska and Vietnam War veteran. “Often the presence of the military makes a situation worse and more combustible. And the military is put in a very difficult spot.”
The U.S. military mainly supports local authorities through the National Guard, which is under the control of state governors. Since protests over the death of George Floyd in police custody started last week, governors in 28 states and the District of Columbia have activated more than 20,400 National Guard members to assist state and local law enforcement in support of civil unrest operations.
When and where to use the National Guard is up to states, but in the White House Rose Garden on Monday, Trump said he instructed every governor to “deploy the National Guard in sufficient numbers that we dominate the streets,” and if local leaders didn’t take such steps, he said, “then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them.”
The plain willingness to unleash military violence against American citizens marked a provocative shift from the restraint that has characterized most previous American presidents’ postures toward quelling civil unrest. The strategy of Republican and Democratic Commanders in Chief alike has been to reduce tensions through an openness to dialogue rather than threats to further confrontation. Trump, on the other hand, has harangued governors to get “tough” on protesters. His Defense Secretary Mark Esper urged governors to restore peace through overwhelming force. “I think the sooner that you mass and dominate the battlespace, the quicker this dissipates, and we can get back to the right normal,” Esper said during a conference call that was leaked to the media.
Trump’s orders appear straightforward: protect the U.S. against what he calls “professional anarchists, violent mobs, arsonists, looters, criminals, rioters, Antifa, and others.” But since the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, the U.S. military has been forbidden to take part in domestic law enforcement. To activate active-duty military in this way, Trump says he’s willing to invoke the 213-year-old Insurrection Act, which could allow him to deploy military forces as he saw fit. The act was last invoked in 1992 during the Los Angeles riots after Rodney King was beaten at the hands of police.
The Pentagon confirmed late Tuesday that about 1,600 active duty troops from Fort Bragg, N.C. and Fort Drum, N.Y. had been brought into the region around the District of Columbia. Some of the soldiers come from military police units. However, law enforcement isn’t a mission that many of the other troops are trained or equipped to do.
For example, the 82nd Airborne Division sent soldiers to the Washington area Monday night, as part of what’s called an “Immediate Response Force.” The unit, which, like the others, is currently on standby status waiting to be called upon, is made up of active duty combat infantry troops who are trained to kill enemies in a combat zone, not police city streets.
A senior defense official told reporters at the Pentagon on Tuesday that the Defense Department would prefer not to use active duty troops to suppress the violent protests that have erupted across the country since Floyd, an unarmed black man who died on May 25 in Minneapolis police custody. “We really would like all of this to stay a National Guard response,” said the official, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Michael Mullen, a retired Navy admiral who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, wrote a searing essay in The Atlantic the same day that criticized Trump’s handling of the military in the current crisis. “The United States has a long and, to be fair, sometimes troubled history of using the armed forces to enforce domestic laws. The issue for us today is not whether this authority exists, but whether it will be wisely administered,” he wrote, adding: “I am deeply worried that as they execute their orders, the members of our military will be co-opted for political purposes.”
National Guard forces have already been involved in one deadly shooting since the nationwide protests began. The troops, along with Louisville police, were breaking up a crowd in a parking lot early Monday morning when someone shot at them shortly after midnight, according to Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad. The troops and police returned fire, killing David McAtee, owner of a barbecue business next to the parking lot. The shooting is currently under investigation.
Since taking office, Trump has relished the power he wields when he exercises his authority over his military leaders. In one of his first acts as President, he chose the Pentagon as the site to sign an executive order that blocked entry for citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries. He often speaks about senior military officers with a sense of ownership, referring to them as “my generals.” He’s seized billions of dollars from the military budget to build his border wall with Mexico after Congress blocked funding for the construction project. And he meddled in the cases of several service members accused of war crimes—despite senior officers’ objections—by pardoning the accused troops before their cases had even gone to trial.
Astonishment has become a familiar sentiment at the Pentagon under Trump. And such was the case Monday, a senior defense official told reporters, when Esper and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Mark Milley left the White House with Trump after he made his speech. “Their understanding was they were walking out of the White House to walk through Lafayette Park to review efforts to quell the protests,” the official said, indicating neither knew that more than a thousand protestors had just been physically cleared out of the park with pepper balls and rubber bullets and police officers swinging riot shields.
The Administration officials walked through the park before Trump stopped in front of the parish house of St. John’s Church, which had been vandalized the night before when protestors ignited a fire in the basement. He stood for pictures and requested his aides, including Esper and Milley, to join. In the eyes of many Administration critics, the military men became “props” in a photo-op — whether they were willing or not.
“President Trump’s sycophantic approach to leadership could potentially be infecting the (Defense Department),” said Rep. Adam Smith, a Democrat from Washington state, who chairs the House Armed Services Committee. “I don’t think I’ve seen that level of problems at the (Defense Department), but I would like to have that conversation because I am concerned about the way the President seems to think that the U.S. government is his personal valet.”
By Tuesday evening, National Guard members continued to flood into Washington, despite requests from Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser to halt the deployments from outside states. The National Guard confirmed that 1,500 Guard members from Indiana, South Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland will be deployed to the city. The additional forces are on top of the 1,300 troops deployed in Washington on Monday night.
Bowser said the idea of adding more troops, particularly active-duty forces, is reckless. “I don’t think the military should be used on the streets of American cities against Americans,” she said. “And I definitely don’t think it should be done for a show.”
