Pests:

Pests are a nuisance and need controlling but here in the UK we are quite lucky in comparison to other countries as we don’t have to put up with the insects that are listed below.

Bullet Ant

The bullet ant is notorious for having one of the most painful stings of any insect in the world and the extreme pain from a single sting can last up to 8 hours. The pain has been likened to an intense burning sensation which is why the bullet ant has earned a place on our list of most dangerous insects.

(Human) Botfly

Firstly, this buzzing bundle of joy has an appetite for human flesh, making it a sure threat to people. The botfly leaves its larvae to grow within the layers of a person’s skin, meaning the unfortunate host can feel them moving around underneath the surface. You have to be doubly unlucky to find yourself host to these larvae as the way they get under your skin is by being attached to mosquitoes and making their way into the wound made when the mosquito bites someone or something – ouch!

Giant Japanese Hornet

Giant Japanese Hornets are the largest hornets in the world with a wingspan of 3 inches and they have a powerful venom made up of 8 chemical substances. Bees and other hornets are amongst their prey and they can bite them in half with ease. They are vicious and destructive within the insect kingdom but humans are also targets for their painful sting which can prove be fatal if the victim was to suffer an allergic reaction.

Fire Ants

Fire ants are so named for two reasons – their colour and their sting. These aggressive ants live in colonies of up to quarter of a million and anyone or anything that intrudes on a colony does so at their own risk and can expect to be repeatedly stung. They feed mostly on seeds, small plants, and other things of that nature but they are omnivores – so be warned.

Kissing Bug

Kissing bugs are dangerous and can be deadly. They are so named because they commonly bite humans around the mouth (and eyes). Kissing Bugs may be infected with Trypanosoma cruzi – which is what makes them so dangerous. If a kissing bug carrying Trypanosoma cruzi bites and infects you, you can contract Chagan disease. The disease can cause swelling, headaches and other nasty side-effects which can last months, however for 60-70% of sufferers the disease does not go past this phase. However, the remaining 30-40% can suffer additional side-effects as long as 10-30 years after the initial infection. These side-effects are much worse and include enlarging ventricles of the heart which can lead to the victim suffering from heart failure.

Fleas

The most common flea is the Cat flea which, like all fleas, feasts on the blood of its host – in this case most often a cat, dog or human. Whilst Fleas can go as long as 100 days without a drop of blood an adult female can drink 15 times her own body weight in blood daily.  An individual bite is unlikely to cause any harm but a large amount of bites can create soreness and itching. Most severe reactions to a flea bites are due to allergies. An allergic reaction to a flea bite can be severe and requires medical attention.

Tsetse Flies

Tsetse flies often carry parasites which can be fatal to humans and are often transmitted whilst the fly stops for a drink of a person’s blood. The fly’s larvae are also deadly as they release toxins through their pores, a single drop of which can kill humans.

Driver Ants

Driver Ants travel in huge colonies – larger than those of Fire Ants. Their colonies can be as large as 22 million ants and each and every one of them is aggressive and carnivorous. They work together and if one ant is hurt they will all work together to attack the aggressor. They can sting, much like fire ants but typically they favor biting and latching on with their mandibles and they become difficult to remove once they have locked on. It is an uncommon occurrence but, as you could possibly imagine, a swarm of these ants can kill a human.

Killer Bees

Killer bees live in colonies of up to 80,000 and are highly aggressive. Many things can easily provoke them such as perfume and loud sounds. Killer Bees produce venom of a similar strength to European bees but they attack in groups leaving people with multiple painful stings and an allergic reaction to these stings can be fatal. Their stingers are also similar to that of European bees but they inject their venom faster than their European counterpart – injecting within just 3 seconds.

Mosquitoes

There are 3,500 species of mosquito. One of the most common is Anopheles, which carries the deadly disease, malaria. Other common species carry forms of encephalitis – a rare but potentially fatal disease which causes inflammation of the brain. Only the female mosquitos drink blood to give them the protein their eggs require and they can drink up to three times their own bodyweight in blood.

BONUS:

Brazilian Wandering Spider

It is not an insect of course, it is an arachnid, but it is a deadly creepy crawly so here it is as a bonus. The Brazilian Wandering Spider’s scientific name is Phoneutria – a name which derives from the Greek term for murderer which is all that needs to be said about this spider. It produces a neurotoxin 20 times as deadly as a Black Widow spider’s. This spider has an extremely painful bite and if it’s venom enters your blood stream it can be deadly.
