My Quarter Life Crisis
Told in a Series of Saved Snapchats
In about four days from now, I’m going to turn 26, which made me think that this might be a great time to reflect on year 25 of my life.
And well, also because I’m going through a post new year slump. You know, the point of time when you realize that you’re not sticking to any of your resolutions, you’re still recovering from the holiday season and struggling to get back into the daily grind, blah blah blah.

Since my creativity and productivity are at an all-time low, I figured that maybe if I just write and reflect, it might help get the juices flowing in my brain again. And I obviously had to tell my story in the most stereotypically millennial way possible - illustrated by a series of Snapchats that I’d saved over the year! :D
Sooo, back to 25 - the milestone number, the axis of our twenties, the pinnacle of our youth *eye roll*- was it everything I’d hoped it would be? Absolutely freakin not! Why? 
Well to start, I spent most of the first half of my 25th year, sick as a dog. I’m not sure what exactly happened but sometime in 2016, my immunity decided to go on a vacation.

Pretty sure I had brought it upon myself with my love for Indomie and Chunky Monkey (I’m sorry, mama!), but my body was suddenly no longer capable of fighting bad bugs on its own.

I was on antibiotics for various infections, eight different times in a span of fewer than six months. The amount and dosages I was prescribed caused absolute chaos in my body.

Two months into my 25th year, after a particularly high antibiotics course, my stomach was pretty upset (common antibiotic side effect). I waited for the effects to fade away, but they never did. One week in, three weeks in, one month in, two months in…...my stomach was still chronically upset. When I say “upset”, you’re probably visualizing explosive diarrhea but it wasn’t that. I could literally not eat any food without my stomach bloating, having immobilizing cramps and feeling extreme pressure and fullness.
Now, all of these symptoms might not seem like a big deal, but imagine if this is your constant state of being where you’re always aware of the discomfort in your stomach. Imagine if the only time you feel relief is when you wake up in the morning because your stomach is empty then. Imagine if anything you put in your mouth is accompanied by the anticipation and fear of feeling like crap for the rest of the day. This was my life for months.
The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me, they said I probably had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Now those who are familiar with IBS will also know that it is basically a medical pseudonym for “we don’t know what the hell is wrong with your stomach”. I didn’t even know what the problem was in order to look for a solution! So to fix myself, I had to turn to the last place I wanted to for help - the internet.
When you look up a sickness on the internet, it can actually be really helpful or it can fill you with a crippling fear and conviction that you’re going to die. But I had no choice because my doctor had sent me home with this very wonderful, completely unhelpful advice: 
“Well all your tests seem normal. Just wash your hands more and get more sleep so you don’t fall sick.”

Also, everyone and their dog is a doctor on the internet. You have no clue who out there actually knows what they’re talking about and who is click-baiting you.

After trudging through hundreds of websites, I began my experimentation with the different remedies that Dr. Internet prescribed, in the hopes that it would give me some relief.
I tried three-day juice cleanses (juice only diet) and water fasts. This is supposed to help reset your stomach by giving it a break from digesting food. I received temporary relief but the moment I started eating again, my discomfort would return.

I avoided foods known to cause intolerance for months like gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, caffeine etc.
On a side note, I never realized how difficult life is when you have to actively check for and avoid ingredients like gluten, which wipes out more than half the options available to consume. My utmost respect for people who have to do this on a regular basis!

But that wasn’t helpful either because my condition was seemingly random, not caused (though exacerbated) by any particular kind of food.
I tried more antibiotics (look up Xifaxan, you need to sell a kidney to even afford this medication) and a ton of herbal drugs. Seriously, while my peers were out spending their money on vacation and parties, I was spending all of mine on expensive herbs and probiotics which promised results, but sadly never delivered. The herbal stuff was especially scary because it’s not regulated by the FDA - I was gambling with trying to fix my problem at the cost of causing new problems for my body.

And of course, I also tried more obvious things like yoga, crying, praying and what not, all in a desperate attempt to fix myself. I was trying to go about my daily life and work with a semblance of normalcy but I felt anything but normal. 
There I was at 25, prime of my youth, unable to consume food, taking fistfuls of pills every night and avoiding eating any actual food, just so I didn’t have to deal with the discomfort. I lost a bunch of weight and the stress took the biggest toll on me, making my condition even worse. As if all of this was not bad enough, various members of my immediate family were having serious health issues as well which was further upsetting me.
Finally, sick of my constant visits, the doctor recommended that I get an Upper Endoscopy - a procedure where they shove a camera down your throat to look inside your stomach to make sure you don’t have cancer or a tumor.

$800 and the awful experience of having a minor surgery all alone later, the doctor came back and told me the same thing - my tests were normal! He suggested getting some other tests done too and kept talking, but as I laid there in bed in my shitty hospital gown and listened to him talk, I totally had a dramatic, bollywoodesque moment. I felt the doctor’s voice fade into the background as I made up my mind that I was fine. I covered all my grounds, did all the tests, tired all the remedies which yielded no results. I decided right then and there that I was going to be fine, even if I wasn’t.

And I swear to God, it felt like a switch had flipped and my body started getting better overnight. That night for dinner, I said “screw this shit” and bought myself pizza - I was eating gluten and dairy after months! I went back to eating everything like normal and ignoring the familiar discomfort I felt in my stomach.

And just like that in the following weeks, I started feeling so much better. Am I absolutely cured today? Is this going to be a miracle recovery story? Sadly, nope.
I still have pretty bad days when I’m doubled over with pain and I still take many probiotics and supplements every night. IBS is a chronic condition with no cure, it can only be managed. I know that it could be worse and that I should be grateful - I am grateful. But IBS has definitely affected the quality of my life and I will probably never be able to fully go back to how I was before. But I have learned to live with it and it’s just another part of my life now.

So there you go, adulthood hit me like a brick when I turned 25 by bringing on wonderful IBS and what’s more stereotypically a sign of age than GI issues?  I brought this upon myself because of self-imposed stress. The moment I consciously stopped thinking about it, I gave my body the opportunity to restore itself, at least to a capacity where I was able to go about my daily life with relative ease.
None of the stress I was dealing with was particularly special, it’s stuff we all deal with - career, visa, money, family, friends, romance etc etc. But I let it get to me and it nearly destroyed the one thing that I actually can’t fix if broken - my health.
In addition to being chronic, IBS is also pretty common and affects many people in different forms. I am hoping that my overshare story is relatable to those who suffer from it and for those who don’t, please chill out and don’t mess yourself up over things that don’t really matter like I did. Pretty basic life lesson which we all know but conveniently ignore.
But year 25 was still pretty awesome - I made great new friends (and lost some) and got my H1B visa finally after 3.5 years. IBS definitely did not hold me back from going on many many many adventures.

While I’m super excited for 26, I do feel the twinge of regret because like most people my age, I’m nowhere near what I thought I would be by now. But a big part of growing up is realizing that the world sucks, it’s not fair, there’re always going to be men with bad hair and no intelligence (read Trump) trying to control you and there ain’t nothing you can do about it. It’s all about accepting that success is defined differently for everyone, that you can’t change everything and being okay with that. It took me a totally avoidable physical and mental crisis to realize that. Here’s me hoping that your journey to self actualization is smoother!

When you try to block all of the feelings that are allocated to you as a human, you don’t get to experience life to the fullest. You must avoid having a pessimistic view of life and search for ways to assist with improving your outlook. How you view the event and how you think it affects you and your life is really all that there is in the situation. It’s all well and good to tell people to value time over money, or to practice mindfulness, but if you’re holding down three part-time jobs and barely making rent, are these tips really applicable to your life? You’re not very successful but if you keep buying new things, people will think you are. If you gradually start buying less and less new things, this will eventually become your new normal. But they can also be little things, such as a co-worker who offered you a cup of coffee or the neighbor who waved to you. Make sure to try new things, experiment and do things you might not do otherwise. When you do these simple things you will automatically feel good and be happy. Feeling happier can be as simple as spending more time in nature. Spending time with animals makes me all soft and gooey on the inside. Introverts recharge their social batteries and internal energy by spending time alone with themselves or their hobbies. Google makes every effort to be as energy efficient as possible, which is a mind-set that is encouraged in their employees. Can we make an effort to become happy? If so, you definitely aren’t alone—but the hard truth is if you don’t know how to be happy with what you have, then it’s unlikely that anything you can buy will make you any happier. Either way if the customer is then going to pick up the phone, who are they going to call - the number 2 company of course - You! You can remind yourself that you are in transition because you made the conscious choice to experience more happiness. Gratitude is a powerful tool to cultivate happiness. What is important is that you remember that you are still on your path, still facing forward, and you can still have what you want. People say it can't be measured, it's a waste of time to pursue it and that happiness is not really measurable at all. People's success in life, rather than being the cause for happiness, may in fact be the outcome of happiness. The terms of trade may change. What was the moment of change for you? Life is full of precious moments; you get to choose how you are going to feel in every moment. If this is true then why are so many of us unhappy? You can't say all these pretty words, wait for the storm to pass, and then go right back to the faulty way you've been doing things. We all want to be happy, right? You have a grateful attitude, you have known your problem, and find the solution. Recognize that you have choices While you can’t prevent many of the difficulties that you'll encounter in life, you can control how you respond to them. By focusing on what’s good in our life, we can keep the negativity from overwhelming our minds. A person who is sad because they are lonely may feel that negativity creeping into other areas of their life. …the people who moved to green areas saw a big reduction in depression, and the people who moved away from green areas saw a big increase in depression. You just have to remember that you are also part of their life. If your environment is often without sun, lamps that are specially designed to mimic sunlight may be an option. You may enjoy watching an entire season of Dexter in a single sitting. Someone else's attitude does not have to become your own and ruin your entire day. The tune is very relaxing and if one is not careful might put someone to sleep if get to relax while looking at their virtual fish tank a bit too much. Oh, and one more thing about this book—it was penned by the wisest man on earth: Solomon. But, being alone doesn’t have to be a negative thing. Welcome to our 'How to Be Happy & Have the Life You Want: Tools For Success' course! It's the small stuff in life that can sometimes make you the happiest. That doesn’t mean having bubble baths and buying new clothes, although that stuff does make you feel good. That doesn’t mean that it will disappear altogether. It doesn’t need to be that way forever and you’re not in competition with everyone else. Too often though, we want the "what do I need to do" list of items, when all along the Lord has been showing and telling us what NOT to do! If you don't have experience in this (particularly if you are a novice landlord) your solution may be a property management service. Start small. Eventually, once you’ve re-written your story, started practising gratitude, and surrounded yourself with like-minded thinkers, you’ll naturally start wanting less. It can be really frustrating when you’ve paired your life with another person. Remember, sometimes it’s the little joys in life like a hot cup of coffee, a good book, or a long hug that make it all worthwhile! On your pathway to happiness, you will probably encounter a lot of people that are dealing with similar issues like you. What are your values and priorities? Caring about your core values is key to understanding why you should and shouldn't do things. Spend your time doing the things that you want to do in the ways that you want to do them. People who spend a lot of time making money generally do so because they believe that the money itself will make them happy, or will guard them against things that will make them unhappy. Money can't make you happy but it can remove many of the issues that make you unhappy. So we’ve condensed some of the highlights and insights into a mini-course you can take right now. You feel trapped and unsatisfied with the way life is treating you right now, or the way life has turned out and all you want is an escape from the hurt and pain. Life is full of ups and downs, so don’t strive to feel good all the time. I am very proud of my boys how they have handled the situation and I can truly say that they are very balanced and kind young men. Seems like there are just a few people who haven’t met loneliness. Going on a long walk is something like rewinding a grandfather clock by hand. When picked up he pats her face, puts his gentle tiny hand into her hair and clings close to her body. In other words, they are playing the hand they were dealt, rather than designing a life they enjoy. They become more content with the direction their life is taking and are generally happier in the long run. Make the choice to be happy and celebrate the absolute abundance that flows in your life. thanks for sharing all that you did! from the squabble with T to your time at GHC and reflecting on what you’re doing with your time. You are so self-reflective. I really appreciate that about you. I agree that it is very weird and a tad uncomfortable all the contradictions that tech embodies. in tech, i find all these people who are genuinely good people with good intentions, but tbh at the end of the day is also just focused on their own well-being. it’s full of people who may care about the world, but care more about their own survival and having a happy life. these were the type of people Tv despised and complained about, and I guess you and I are kind of one of them and surrounded by. It’s something I struggle to come to terms with everyday, and contributes to my daily moments of misery and questioning “what the f am i doing here”. but what can ya do, life is short and we also want to be able to enjoy the world’s luxuries.
the topic i wanted to write about today is the essence of our tumblr name, being “slow” and how that is the new goal for me. it’s always kind of been my nature, but one that I saw as “bad” and tried to grow out of. but i am feeling a change within, and to embrace and accept myself more, is to also embrace that part of me. i look around me, at my coworkers, my acquaintances, people i pass by on the way home, and it appears that people are always doing something, going on to the next thing, either focused on developing relationships or developing themself in some hobby, to get better... if it was the Sims, everyone’s trying to level up. It’s something I never quite did, and never quite got, but I always felt the pressure to do. 
it’s been enough years of trying to push myself to be someone I just am not, and time to get in touch with who I really am, and that is someone who wants a life of slowness. I want to spend days floating in the water, lying on the grass, listening to the same music on repeat, admiring each moment and what i get to see when i slow down (which i am lucky to get to do on my walks to work/home). i am most naturally, and at home, when I get to do close to nothing (but in interesting environments). that might be when I am the happiest. it is the pressure of how that is not “good” that i think in my early 20s, pushed me overboard and to be constantly unhappy with myself and thinking there was something wrong with me. of course, i still enjoy the occasional push and feeling ‘high’ like that feeling when you click with someone in your first moments or when you accomplish a challenging hike, but for the most part, i don’t want that to be my everyday.
a reason i struggled a lot with this about me, is because society typical “motivational” stories are about “getting out of your comfort zone” and “do what makes you uncomfortable” and “you’ll never know if you don’t try” and “nothing’s going to change if you don’t change how you live your life”. so as a result of listening to that advice, i pushed myself to try all these things, and try to put myself out there. sometimes in the short term i would appreciate what i learn or people i meet, but looking back a few months later now? i wish i didn’t do those things lol (but also am glad i did, otherwise i would never know). idk, it’s weird, how do i get out of my comfort zone, if I know the things I will just genuinely not enjoy? what if I don’t want to go to that concert? or go dancing? or go drinking? those are technically all outside of my comfort zone, but i know if i do those things, i will feel drained. what is the balance? at this point, i know what isn’t for me, and i am okay with that. it might change someday in the future, but being around lots of people is something i know i really can’t stand nowadays.
I remember when I first moved out here, I had this list and I was obsessed with picking up new hobbies and doing things... I need to learn to farm! to sew! to camp! to drive! exercise! eat healthy! art communities! activism! make friends! blah blah. and here i am, 1.5 years later, having met a lot of people in these spaces and made some “friends” (you know, people i do things with), and tbh even thinking about all of it makes me tired.  i’d say the hikes i’ve done here are the only thing i am grateful to have done. i am grateful for doing everything else too, because i realized i didn’t want to continue doing them. so yeah, i am going to slow down. do what i know i like - more nature, more hikes, more slowing down, more learning, more being around the right people. less pressuring myself, less pushing myself, less attempt at trying to “level up”. because honestly, what’s the rush? also if it’s not my priority to be really good at something, then there is no need for me to focus my time on doing that. i know that doing something i enjoy for my day job (doesn’t have to be content, but rather the structure/freedom/flexibility) hugely impacts my life, and right now, being in tech in the bay area just isn’t doing it for me. 
all of this reflection was really sparked by my typical thoughts as i walk home how, if i dig really deep, i am not happy/satisfied with my life. i know it’s all temporary and i am capable of pushing through, but there is nothing exciting about my work. being able to find it exciting or engaging means a lot to me, so that is where i am putting the energy i have left, to take the steps where i can, to do something fulfilling, or at least, something on my terms.

I am currently working a temporary job away from home in another state not my permanent residence (I am living there for the term of the employment). While there I bought another vehicle and registered it in that state and when insuring it moved my other car to the policy not realizing this could cause a problem. Now on my first vehicle, which was registered in my home state, the home state has refused to renew the registration because it carries out of state insurance. However, I also don't own the first vehicle, it is owned by my parents who are a resident of my home state, I just use it and pay the insurance. So unless I am missing anything, It looks like I am basically going to be forced to register that vehicle in a state where I do not have residence or cancel my insurance policy and get insurance for only that vehicle through a provider in my home state. Is this it or are there other options? I'm confused because they let me renew last year even though I had the out of state insurance, but I had switched during that year so maybe they considered me part-time or something. One way ticket anyone?
Regardless of your beliefs, whether it's in the Big Bang or Darwin's theory of evolution it's a fact that at some point on this earth there was a first man and a first woman. Whether their names were Adam and Eve is irrelevant. What is relevant is our purpose.
Through the centuries we have evolved through societal structures, behavioural patterns and intelligence. Well, that's what history tells us. However, we live in an era of ever decreasing levels of happiness, increased levels of prescribed medications such as anti-depressants, homelessness is at its highest level and with no solution of the housing crisis. Kindness is such a rarity these days that it's mistaken as flirting or an invitation to bed. Suicide rates in teenagers is dramatically on the increase. Does this really sound like an evolution of mankind? As a teenager your life is just starting, these should be the best days of your life, not the worse and certainly not so bad you don't want to live.  These facts are alarming and beg the question; are we evolving, revolving or regressing?  
I just want to take a minute to ask you something. As a person reading this right now, are you aware of what makes you happy? On a scale of 1-10 how happy are you? What makes you unhappy? On a scale of 1-10 how unhappy are you? Which of these questions was easier to answer?
Every person on this planet right now causes an effect. Where there is effect there is cause, they are one and the same. Without cause there is no affect, like a ripple in the pond. There would be no ripple if there were no stone. Fact. However where is the intention within our cause? Cause and intention have to be an equilibrium for congruency to be prevalent.  There is often little thought given to our intention because we act in cause. The effect we have is misaligned with our purpose because the cause of the effect is given little if any regard. We act against our instincts despite it being the greatest tool we have all been gifted with. In the busy lives we lead, it's too easy to silence that gut feeling, to dismiss the little voice inside us and it's only when we're lost do we wonder what happened. The truth is that, that little voice is your soul guiding you. My favourite Steve Jobs quote is "be lead by the soul, it's the only one that knows the way and it's best when we let ourselves be guided by it." Have you heard your soul before? Let's take a minute to listen to our soul right now. Stop what your doing right now. Close your eyes, listen to your breath, let your thoughts flow until they have run dry and then absorb the silence. That silence right there is your soul, it's beautiful isn't it? (If you struggle with this bit then there are many guided meditations on YouTube that are free. If you are struggling with the feeling you are experiencing in the quiet of your mind, please know it's perfectly normal. It may even feel scary. I remember the first time I observed the feeling of a silent mind and it was dark and very daunting. But trust yourself. This is just a tunnel taking you through to the other side of consciousness. You are simply awakening your mind. There is nothing in your thought process you can't control. You are perfectly safe.)
As we grow, we evolve. Our learning becomes constant, we listen more and ask more and more questions. My Granddad always said "you have two ears and one mouth girl, use them in that order." I had no idea what he meant until I actually shut my mouth and started actively listening. To listen to someone without thinking is a beautiful gift. To really stop what you're doing, open your mind to their speaking, close your mouth and really give someone your attention is amazing. You notice so many different elements you didn't notice before. The way they breathe and the sparkle in their eyes. It doesn't happen often, people are often busy thinking of a response they need to give in the conversation or messing with their phones or thinking what they need to cook for dinner.
The more I evolve and grow the more I realise how little I know. But the further I get along this journey the lighter I become. There's a constant decrease of negative people in my life and a lot less emotional baggage I'm carry around with me these days. The biggest lesson my Granddad taught me is death is inevitable, fact. We are all going to die. Whether we like it or not, there will be a point when you and I don't exist.  It may not tomorrow or the day after, but there will come a day when you and I will no longer be here. Does that thought scare you? What scares you most about knowing you will die? Life is the journey to the destination that is death. Why are we all racing there? Take a minute right now to look at your life. Do you love your life? Whatever the answer, now ask yourself do you think it's possible to love your life more? Let me tell you the answer is yes. Plain and simple but you are the only you can create a life you love so intensely. No one else will do it for you, we are all working on loving our own lives.
We may be on this planet a long time or a short time, we don't know. But time is only relevant when we compare it to something other than itself. For example a life that exists for one year isn't very long when we compare it with the life of that of a 85 year old. But when we compare one year with one second it seems quite a lot longer. Knowing you may die in one second, one year or 85 years is only relevant when it's compared.  But where does that leave this moment right here? In this moment as you are reading this, and as I am writing this to you. This is the most important moment of your life. Really. Why? Because it is the only thing that is real. This moment right here and now is the only moment that exists, and you have the power right now to take your life into your hands and be the happiest you've ever been. So as you read this, take a deep breath in, fill all your lungs with air, look up and smile. As you exhale, breath out with gratitude for the air you are breathing. It's more than some people have right now. Understand you are so rich in life right NOW. Feel your lungs as they fill with air and know that is the gift of life. Forget about the past, learn from it. Don't focus on the future, it doesn't exist yet. Breath in the now and exhale the love and gratitude life is giving you, right now. How amazing is that?
I'm going to tell you a little secret, no ones life is perfect. Well not as perfect as they make out on their Instagram account anyway! Society pressures programme us to know and feel that we are lacking, we are not enough, nor do we have enough. You know the feeling. We think we need that 50" television, or the latest iPhone...blah blah! Currently I'm saving up to buy myself a MacBook Pro! But we have to established and understand we don't NEED anything but oxygen, food and water. Actually we WANT those things, there's a difference.  It's fine to want them, but don't allow yourself to become obsessed with them and then place your every ounce of happiness in purchasing them, it will only leave you feeling dissatisfied. Let me ask you a question, does that thing you're working towards getting, whatever it is, does it define your soul?
Our purpose in life is only to experience our souls desire. That doesn't mean we can't have the big house, expensive car but know the difference between wanting and needing, soul defining and enriching. Know yourself enough to know you are enough exactly as you are. Exactly. With faults and all. That extra 2kg your carrying right now around your waist doesn't define you nor does it make anyone love you any less because it's there. Love everything you are. No one else will love you greater than the love you can show yourself. Be kind to yourself. The things we tell ourselves are things we would never say to another. Would you tell your friend that they look fat today, that they should have done better in that job interview? No, so why do we feel it's acceptable to tell ourselves that? I'll tell you why, because we are taught to. When we look at magazine covers, adverts, films, it's drilled into us that we are not enough. We're fat, we're not successful enough, or rich enough. All these elements should be measured on personal preference, not defined by societies dictations. I want you to know that you can make a change today and realise you are enough. How? Listen to me and know I'm telling you that you are. If you want to disagree with me that's cool. I'll take you for coffee and tell you everything I see that's beautiful in front of me when I look at you. That's a promise and I'll keep telling you that you're enough until you don't need me to tell you anymore because you believe it.
So, where does that leave us? Well, to maintain happiness of course. Who doesn't want to be happy for the rest of their life? We just need to take one step at a time. Remember this is not a race, and if it is I'm happy to come in last. I'm not ready to die anytime soon, are you? Don't rush a single moment.
