I'm sooooo sick of language learners pitting comprehensible input (usually CI Lessons specifically) against traditional classes with explicit explanations and translation.
It all works! Whatever you want to use, whatever combination of stuff! Whatever! If you understand, with the help of textbooks or flashcards or trnalsation apps or a teacher COOL. If you understand something directly from context like visuals or the surrounding words COOL. We did both in our native languages! Of course it's fine to do both in new languages!
Anyway... may you all have better luck online than me and see chiller people.
#rant#i got frustrated again today ;-;#also i feel like the divide is over Intensive versus Extensive learning (if put a different way)#and in classes in our native languages. like in say Science class. our teachers both defined new words (intensive/explicit explanations)#and spoke in lectures where we occasionally guessed a words meaning by the surrounding words we knew#(extensive/learning from context)#same with History class. Literature class. etc. its not a fucking shocking idea. to do both#to learn from both#anyway i tried to watch a PsychoLingo video today and i WANT to like him#i think he'd probably agree with me mostly. i just think#some really Dogmatic CI proponents have pissed him off so he's tearing into CI#even though Comprehensible Input is a BROAD term#from the very comprehensible everything is explained TEXTBOOKS which are CI! to the other extreme CI meaning shows you understand#and what many people call CI which is CI lessons which are made to be understandable with VISUALS.#which is not controversial. CI lessons are a part of many classroom teaching lessons! including ones i volunteered to help with#anyway. i think Psycholingo was pissed off by TheFluencyFormula#and same. i get it. i saw TheFluencyFormula when he made his channel#and it was SO obvious he was repackaging Matt vs Japan/AJATT/MIA/Refold and trying to sell it for profit#aka giving rhe same super common language learning advice people already do for free!#(an anki most common words deck. waiting to speak. watching shows and looking words up. lots of ppl have this study plan!#its not new. its not mind blowing. its not worth money)#and TheFluencyFormula's claim it took him 1 hour a day for 1 year haha. haaaaaaa#anyone who's studied Chinese for a while (many of whom were already doing a similar study plan - because#its a common study plan MANY people come up with for free - knows an hour a#day wont get you fluent. at BEST maybe HSK 4-5 in a year. if you're super skilled and quick at picking up things#the quickest person ive seen reached HSK4 in 8 months. i know because i copied their study plan. and id say i took LONGER#i was not reading at an HSK4 level without dictionary assistance until 1.5 years at 1-2 hours a#day. it was clear TheFluencyFormula was just exagerating and trying to sell a study plan that should be free.#that already IS free. so i get why a person might be frustrated with the guy#anyway im so tired. im so tired of dogmatic people everywhere and rip offs
