i wouldn't say it's an unpopular opinion but among some people in the fandom (ahem) it's controversial to say that maria's behavior towards joel and her warning ellie about him was completely justified. and it was. she's a grown ass woman who has seen and experienced who knows what awfulness in the apocalypse. and here comes this man she's clearly heard predominantly bad things about, with a teenage girl she knows isn't his. wouldn't you be fucking suspicious? wouldn't you want to make sure that ellie was safe with this man known to be dangerous? she doesn't know anything about joel beyond what tommy's told her and clearly tommy unloaded some bad shit. so her being suspicious and mistrustful of this man in her town is 100% warranted. AND THEN he wants to send her husband off to do some dangerous shit in his place.

but people wanna be mad at her because being a joel apologist/defender means that anyone against him is automatically evil. and then you add in the fact that in the show she's a Black woman? her character was unfortunately doomed from the start with some sectors of the tlou fandom (under the guise of "wanting the show characters to look like the game characters" of course; these are the same people who don't find the person playing the 14 year old attractive enough). hopefully y'all learn to respect her in season 2.

anyway sorry i’m gonna be weird about this for a minute. for me, the thing that makes this so clever, the way the writing in the raven cycle works so well is because it’s so earnestly observational about the way we work as humans.

i dunno about you, but i vividly remember certain people when i was that age—even this age—who had something them that made you feel… like you wanted to be in on their secret.

that when you made them laugh, it felt different to making other people laugh, because their laugh is heavier somehow. or you want to be the one they lean into to tell an inside joke. or the one they think to invite somewhere. not even necessarily in a romantic way.

it’s like some people just have this *thing* about them. Ronan Lynch is the best example of capturing that in a character that i think ive ever read.

Referring to Arya's development in Braavos as "brief descriptions" when her AFfC/ADwD chapters are almost entirely dedicated to showing us her training is...certainly a choice. Doing so to claim that Sansa has the more detailed learning arc? Pure clownery. You'd never guess from this response that the original post was about detailing Arya's training with the FM (using quotes from the book!) and makes no mention of Sansa anywhere. Notably this response provides no evidence from the books and makes objectively false claims; nowhere across five books is Sansa mentioned to have a grasp of High Valyrian but, of course, Sansa has to be handed every skill that Arya has without any page space dedicated to learning it. I know this is a wild concept, but Arya exists as her own character and not everything about her story can be applied to Sansa.
