ONE YEAR OF DEAD MAN WALKING AU !

To celebrate here' a redraw of the first ever piece of DMWcontent! :D

Well, so it's already a one whole year since I drew this teaser art for an AU comic.

Idea for which randomly spawned in my head while listening to Kitchen Fork by Jack Conte, while trying to draw something entirely different .

At that time I didnt know the impact this silly funny drawing would have on my life. I mean, it was a quick doodle, done in around twenty minutes.

But now, one year, ten comics, 78 comic pages, and countless miscellaneous Dead Man Walking AU-related posts later, I can safely say this series has been way more successful than I would've ever expected :D

When I made this AU I didn't didn't think there would be so much positive feedback, seriously, the amount of fanart it spawned is incredible I'm grateful for the community that grew around it <3

A lot has happened during this year, making a making a comic about a doppelganger trying his best to not expose himself pushed me as an artist I must say.

Now, I know i said I would try to make the next comic for this special day but, there're still a couple pages to be done and I woud prefer to NOT rush those, given that these pages are ....very important.... for the plot of DMW......

The next comic is going to have even more pages than the previous one 👀

Now that all three copies have made their way to the recipients, it's time to post pictures of my first end-to-end book bind!

These are copies of @robotmango's delightful Word of Honor novella, 'The wild geese.' Featuring arranged-ish marriage, Feral Gremlin Accidentally Falls For Husband, and really more self-mutilation than you might think for what's essentially a love story about finding freedom. I've loved this fic for a long time, and when I saw @rainsfalling's gorgeous typeset (mountain chapter headers! and scene breaks!) for @renegadeguild's Tiny Books Bang I was overcome with covetous glee >:D

...of course, then I had to actually print the thing, which took four separate goes around the Brother tech support phone line and a whole replacement printer, BUT! printer nemesis defeated, the bookmaking itself was a delight! This was my first time working with textblocks all the way up from a flat page to a book, and I was right, the sewing is the best bit. Naked unglued textblocks are extremely wobbly, though, and this is also very cute.

Another piece of technology conquered: my Silhouette Cameo vinyl printer (cutter?), scavenged from the ruins of Joann's demise and put hard to work cutting out so many tiny geese and mountain ranges. (Weeding is also very fun. Slightly less than sewing! But only because sometimes you lose pieces and have to swear about it.) Cover design remains a mystery, so I mostly copied @rainsfalling's interior design work ^.^;

One thing I knew I wanted was to make these three - one each for Rainsfalling and Orange and one for me to keep - to be sisters, not triplets. I got to try out faux double-core endbands at the Renegade Bindery retreat, and so swapping out a single colour in the endbands (and using different ribbons) seemed like a good way to change things up without making a ton more work for myself! (Pro tip, though: do not flirt with Thread Chicken while making end bands. It is very hard to keep an even tension with only two inches of tail!!!)

All in all, I'm extremely happy with these as my first full project, & I feel like I learned a ton. (Much thanks to all the Renegade folks, particularly @runawaymarbles for letting me come over & slicing chunks off of these with her guillotine, without which the edges would be a far more jagged affair.) They're real! They open! You can read them like real books! I... have already typeset & am partway through making three more octavo projects ^.^;

Soon my shelves will be overwhelmed with tiny fic binds and you know what? I'm okay with that.

This was something that I had worked on a while ago.. But I just now had the courage to post this :') This will be my (hopefully not) last post for you guys in a while...

A little bit of context: I realize now while looking at the drawing that Pierrot's mask doesn't break before he killed Harlequin, it happens shortly after he kills them all.. But uh- This is basically a "joke" scene of my Decimate A.U. To give a short summary; Pierrot introduced MC to the crew (-Harlequin bc they already met him), and MC ended up getting close with them. Pierrot didn't mind at first, but slowly he started to get more and more jealous which ultimately lead to their demises. Harlequin being first, Ticket Taker second, [The fifth one] third, and Jester last... Like I mentioned before though- Pierrot's mask didn't break before, that happened after in another incident involving MC...

I really enjoy hearing your thoughts on Jason! If you were to do a solo for him which characters would you include in his supporting cast? Like either completely new ones or other ones he’s interacted with in the past

Hi there!! Thank you so much for reading (+ liking) my silly little blog posts about Jason ☺️. You pose a fascinating question + I’ve been mulling over how I’d respond to it for a little while, so please excuse my delay in replying. My concise answer is that it depends on whether this hypothetical Jason solo takes place pre-death (A), post-death/pre-Bat-family reconciliation (B), post-Bat-family reconciliation (C), or in current continuity (D). E.G. replacing GFM’s ongoing + taking Jason’s story on from where Hush 2 leaves off.

The long answer… you can find under the read more cut! ->

In option A, I’d focus on Jason + his isolation at Bruce’s side by highlighting his lack of a supporting cast + the psychological ramifications of Jason suffering a lifetime of unstable relationships. This means bringing up + dividing his canon childhood friendships into two sections. First comes the fleeting relationships he shared with kids pre-Bruce (Numbers, Gabby, Chris, Max, + Dana). Even if canon (e.g. Martinbrough with Dana) pretends they were lifelong besties, I would show how these were short bonds made under pressure + disrupted by the lack of control Jason had over his life as a kid in Crime Alley. After this comes his canon 80s friendships. That means: Eddie (hampered by Bruce’s instruction not to reveal anything too personal) + Rena (I reconcile Pre- + Post-Crisis by saying they broke up after Batman went missing during the Cult + Jason became more fixated on ‘fixing’ that relationship). The reason I mention all these is b/c I’d have the memory of them / the transience of their place in his life act as the stable support system Jason doesn’t have amongst his peers.

His actual supporting cast would be the adults blind to the solo’s deconstruction of genre premises going on before their eyes; the civilians who question Jason Todd’s loneliness but ultimately view it as the product of his shyness vs. the heroes who don’t even see Jason Todd’s loneliness b/c well, he has Bruce, doesn’t he?

In option B, I would rewrite both iterations of the Outlaws to suit a continuity where Flashpoint didn’t erase years. That means when Roy is on Deathstroke’s team in Titans (2008-11), + they break into Alyce Sinner’s Arkham Asylum, he ends up springing Jason from her torture dungeon + the two go rogue together. Eventually they encounter a post-R.E.B.E.L.S. Kory who’s also trying not to think about her recent traumas, + the Outlaws-that-should-have-been are born. Though they all try to avoid super-heroes for different reasons, these heroes would occasionally cameo (eg. Dick, Bruce, Ollie, The Titans, etc.). This team lasts an in-universe year (the length of the N52) before they all choose to betray their friendships to get back those relationships which they once lost + were running away from. (E.G. Kory gets back Dick + the Titans, Roy gets back Lian, + Jason gets back Bruce).

At which point, we arrive at option C where the Outlaws 2.0 are still the Dark Trinity, but more is done with how they were each introduced as ‘dark mirrors’ to the Trinity + disliked by the in-universe and/or out-of-universe public. Now, at the start of Rebirth, they are each attempting to imitate their ‘originals’ + ‘earn’ Love/acceptance. E.G. Bizarro wants to be more like Superman, or at least loved by the public like Superman, so we revive his Pre-Crisis Bizarro family + the story interrogates whether he wants them b/c he wants to be Loved as a person by other people or b/c he wants to leverage them to seem Normal + Deserving of Love to the public.

I would also do more with each of them sharing the life existence of ‘dying + coming back’, but having unique iterations of that experience that affect them in the long run. E.G. Jason went to a DC Heaven, Artemis to a DC Hell, + Bizarro to a DC Limbo. Jason was plucked from the afterlife against his will, Artemis fought her way out, + Bizarro goes through a Ship of Theseus dilemma where he knows he is just the product of conintual Bizarros invented by Luthor after the Crisis. So who’s to say that having all of the Bizarros’s memories means he even came back to life?

Finally, in option D, I would keep Jason away from Helena B b/c 1. Her fans are annoying + have been whining about him ‘stealing’ her traits for years, 2. He’s so gay that I’ll laugh at any ‘chemistry’ drawn between them, + 3. I would prefer to throw him in with a mixture of civilians + villains rather than yet more anti-heroes.

I would undoubtably invent new civilians, but I would also bring back many old ones, like Felix Desidero or pre-Crisis Julia Pennyworth (rather than Snyder’s OC). I’m currently hoping to write a story about late Post-Crisis Nocturna + Jason, as well as one about post Batman Inc v2 Talia + Jason, + I don’t want to spoil either of these fics, but the themes I explore in these ones would recur were I to bring these relationships back within this post-H2SH solo. (And I would.)

I would also seek to explore how Jason has defined himself as a revenant since he came back to life, + how he lacks anything close to a civilian identity/life. As we all know, Batman gave him Robin before bringing him to Bruce’s house, setting a standard that if Jason loses one role (Robin) he loses the other (son), thereby leading him to conflate them so intensely that even Bruce’s statement “I won’t force you to do this any—[more]” is interrupted as Jason clings to the role of Robin/son (TEC #574). All that means that I’d confront how — after Jason’s identity crises in his villain era (2000s), + his two (rewritten) Outlaw stints, Jason Todd still does not legally exist. But — in order to get him back after this hypothetical post-H2SH Bat-fam breakup future — Bruce forcibly returns his adopted son to life. The solo then streams from this reveal at the end of issue 1.

This would (IMO) provide an interesting dichotomy between the civilian life which 22 year old Jason has not had even the pretence of since he was 14 years old (let alone ever having people clamour for his attention), + the costumed life, where he’s once again stranded like a lone island in the No Man’s Land that lies between hero / villain binary that underwrites that world. I’d like to see several villains then recur in this series (like Shiva in Batgirl 2000) as not only a parallel to Jason’s situation but also marker for his changed personality/situation over time —> eg. Two-Face allows for commentary on Jason’s struggle over this forced bifurcation of his life/identity, whilst Black Mask is another ordinary man who buried himself underneath a coffin mask to lose himself in his own myth. I guess I’m fond of the Two-Face, Black Mask, + Red Hood trio dynamic that exists only in the vaguest sense (one line in Task Force Z).

B/c this option D is dependent on a continuity that has not yet unfolded, I can’t comment about the overall trajectory (which would be ultimately beholden to the Bat office editorial), but those ideas I’ve outlined are the ways in which I would approach the management of a supporting cast of recurring characters.

Hank didn’t say a word. Just watched.

And when it became clear the lock wouldn’t respond —

he stepped closer.

Sat down beside him. Asked nothing. Just stayed.

— So… we’re stuck?

— Temporarily.

— And now?

— We wait.

Connor didn’t look away.

Hank reached out, resting his hand gently on Connor’s wrist.

No words. Hesitant, but soft.

— Then we wait. Together.

There was no exit.

But in the silence —

R - would think M would be a good fit because clearly MC is very comfortable around them and they have a very close relationship already. doesn't trust S so that's out of the question. also can't stand C.

S - ALSO thinks M would be good with MC. they clearly have history and they care about each other no matter what. S always butts heads with R and finds them quite insufferable. S's thoughts of C are spoilery.

C - literally no one. they don't like M, R, or S at all.
