Niche Shameless: Intro Post

The goal of this account is to share and promote the parts of Shameless US fandom that tend to get less love and focus. Both by hosting events and reblogging creations (art, fic, vids, gifs sets, meta, crafts, etc.).

I want to encourage people to create more things about the niche aspects of Shameless. And, in return, to make those creations easier to find so we can support creators with reblogs, likes, kudos, and comments.

As a bonus, I'm hoping this account makes it easier for followers to find others who love the same character, pairing, sibling duo, etc. There's nothing better than finding people with the same obsession so we can hype each other up!

What do you mean by "niche"?

Currently, that means everything other than Ian/Mickey* as a pairing.

There's a great variety of events in the fandom, but all of them are focused exclusively on Ian/Mickey. It's similar when you look at the fics posted under the Shameless US fandom on AO3: 91.9% are tagged with Ian/Mickey (yes, I did the math).

So, as a result, the "niche" side of fandom becomes everything else. I wanted a place to talk about those aspects of the show where they wouldn't get drowned out.

*This account will still have some Ian and Mickey, but the goal is to focus on them as characters (not as a couple), and on their other relationships. Those relationships can be sexual, romantic, or platonic. They can be canon or not. So if you have fanart you've been dying to share for Mickey/OC Mexican boyfriend, that's welcome here!

Look, I am not a math genius but I can't stop thinking about this.

McQ wins an award the same year as Nicole Kidman did, years before he met Tom, when Nicole and Tom were still married. What are the odds of that?

McQ was about to give up on Hollywood because no one was taking a chance on him. And you can tell he meant it when he said it. He was done.

But coincidentally, he was at a restaurant one day when he heard someone talk about Tom in a negative light. Again, what are the odds of him being in that restaurant that day, of him listening to the conversation and of these people even having that conversation at the same time at all?

But it doesn't stop there, no. For some reason, he decides to go through a lot of trouble to meet Tom, something he said he has never done before.

It is bonkers to me that McQ was ready to give up, was going to, literally just wanted to be able to pay off his debt so he could be done with Hollywood. Like if he hadn't listened to that conversation, he would probably have found someone to sell his scripts to and would have left without meeting Tom. That is wild to me that one single conversation led to them meeting.

It is even wilder that Chris could have done what he set out to do: He could have produced Valkyrie, collected his paycheck and left. You can tell he was absolutely done with it, but between Valkyrie and Ghost Protocol, something changed.

In Ghost Protocol, Tom needed his help and he went - seemingly without question - during a holiday most would spend with their families. He went and helped and did a lot of work without taking any credit. Which, are we to believe Tom didn't offer to give him? Because he is a producer, I am sure he would have told McQ they would credit him for his input and if I am right, McQ must have denied the offer.

And that could have been the end of it. But it wasn't.

He kept coming back.

Even with all the exhaustion, even with all the worrying and logistics, he chose to keep coming back to MI instead of giving the script to other directors. And if we think about the fact that this absolutely took a toll on him, on them both, but yet he kept coming even if he already had all the tools to just leave is so telling, in my opinion.

There was nothing stopping McQ from collecting his paycheck, leaving and just spending the rest of his life on some nice coastal city without any stress, and yet he never went for it.

Because listen, this is his best friend he had to direct for years. This is a man who he has clearly grown to love and admire and cherish, and this is a fucking movie star whose life literally relies on them being meticulous with their stunts.

Tom's live was on the line for most of these movies. Can you imagine how stressful it is to know that your best friend is dangling himself from a plan and that if something goes wrong, it will be on you?

Can you imagine accepting that you'd literally rather die with him than receive the news that he has died because that would be too unbearable for you to hear?

I do not wish to be in McQ's shoes during those moments. During the times where Tom was literally yeeting himself from a cliff and McQ was staring at the screen praying that the parachute would open. And then having to go through that again.

All I am saying is that we shouldn't take for granted the fact that McQ could have walked away over a decade ago, but despite how much he has said he was ready to do it, he has never followed through with it.

i did some maths/research about the game's height benchmarks based off the descriptions in the books for relative heights, the startup.txt comments and canon heights given in the qnas and patreon lore posts (copied over from what i wrote on sidestep's wiki page)

Short: "about Argent's size, shorter than everyone else."[21] Argent is is 5ft 3in[nb 77] and described as "almost the same" and "about the same height" to short Sidesteps in Chapter 14.[1]

Average: "shorter than ortega and chen, about the same as herald, mortum a fraction shorter, argent shorter."[21] Herald's height is 5'9,[nb 78] and Mortum's is 5'7.[nb 79]

Tall: "taller than everyone,"[21] which includes Ortega (6ft)[nb 80] and Chen (6ft1in)[nb 81] Ortega is shorter than tall Sidesteps, though "not by much."[5]

When standing close together, short Sidesteps will be at Ortega's chest, and have Ortega almost rest their chin on Sidestep's head.[16] This is compared to average height Sidesteps which can comfortably rest their head on Ortega's shoulder.[5]The same is true with Chen.[14] When they kiss, short Sidesteps must stand on tiptoe, whereas average Sidesteps only need Ortega to lean down.[19][1]

Edit: @apocynthion reminded me the line that av sidesteps used to be taller than Chen pre HB when he was 5'9 (ch15) so

based off this my best guesses for the benchmarks: 5'4-5'5 for short, 5'10ish for average and 6'2ish for tall (to be taller than both ortega and chen, sidestep would have to be 6'2, since chen's 6'1 with his modded legs).

also, favourite recent additions to Ortega's page's trivia (mostly from the books):

Concerning Marazhai I would say that it is known that player take a deep enjoyment in telling on every reddit post that they killed him, even a the slight mention of his name. I think, in that aspect, he can be put with Yrliet. He is facing the same kind of treatment as her in many aspects, and it forbids them to have anykind of deep analyse from a lot of people.

Argenta would be a very interesting case too, because as far as I'm concernes she did FAR WORSE than Yrliet to hurt the dynasty, and can never be truly taken acountable for that. She is a complex character too, don't get me wrong, but if Yrliet is taking so much hate then she should have way more coming her way too. But she's victim from another type of objectification so...

I've now seen multiple people complain that the RT fandom "infantalizes" Yrliet and doesn't hold her responsible for anything and I have to ask...

She's *constantly* criticized for her every action and character trait by the fandom. Zero is a toddler when theyre babies, and hes still a toddler when theyre adults a few weeks/months later. you are absolutely correct in your second chariterization where one-five are essentially like "I love my older brother" and then they hold up a baby.

i've talked about them a teeny bit before but basically

Zero: Zane

One: nonbinary and extremely quiet, rarely talks. Theres a running joke that they are in on that they're the 'evil sibling.' they love to play cards- dont play with them tho because they cheat and they do it so well you won't know it until they've taken all your money. card counter extraordinaire. they cheat at all games ever actually. sneaky...

Two: valley girl/legally blonde esque, smart as a whip but seems very shallow or surface level. She loves movies, comic books, video games, etc. and knows tons of lore on all games. gets super competitive when playing games especially against One. Showed strong mothering tendencies, and expressed a desire to have a more active role in Zeros growth.

Three: chill, calm, and cusses more than the others. He loves nature and was quite adventurous, always looking forward to days where they left the facility to test their bodies in the woods. he was looking forward to gaining a body and seeing the world outside pictures on a screen. he's probably the most protective, and was quick to put a stop to something if it seemed like the engineers were pushing one of his siblings too hard.

Four: Pretentious! The sibling with the largest database, four has expansive knowledge on everything stored in his hard drive and constantly runs algorithms and calculations. He spent his free time attempting to solve great unsolved math problems, and believed he was getting close to a break through before his death. absolutely acts like a pompous asshole but loves his siblings and values them all the same. he's the easiest to tease because he gets flustered fast. uses he/him pronouns but not really concerned with gender

Five: A very serious, thorough person. She wants to do her job and she wants to do it well, and spends much of her time learning how to protect and help people. she regrets the time she didn’t spend with her siblings that she cannot make up for. dealt with her trauma by leaning into her prime directive and going after all ems regardless of crimes or lack thereof... she was never as close to her siblings as she could have been.

Can we get more info on Five? If she can steal several elemental powers why can't Zane? (Or is it smth that has to be done intentionally in which case what happened with the previous Ice em?).And how does she feel about Zane being titanium?

well, he could. He absolutely had the ability, he just didn't know he was able to, and had no idea how to do it. The only reason Five can absorb elemental abilities is because the housing of her power source is made from Chronosteel, and her actual literal power source contains traces of a synthetic version of the blue crystals found in the caves under chens island (Which is what allows her to take more than one element at a time)

Zane had the same powersource! They were made in the same facility by the same people with the same materials (granted, when Dr.J smuggled Zane out of the compound he had to leave behind a lot of his original parts. his powersource was one of the few things he made certain to take.) I like to think the whole reason Zane didn't instantly disintegrate when he touched the golden armor at the end of s3 is because of the chronosteel in his core. it didn't save him, but it bought him a few seconds of extra time.

is it something that has to be done intentionally?

yes, it has to be done intentionally! and it's not really an intuitive thing. All of the original Six had to be trained to steal elements- it's honestly kind of lucky that Five can actually do it. She never had real field practice. it involves prolonged skin contact and a whole lot of focus. Zane was never trained how, and even if he was he has no memories of his five siblings or the facility he was originally created in.

what happened with the previous Ice em?

PrevIceEM gave Zane ice. It was purely a gift. Zane absolutely did not steal it. When any of the original six androids steal an element, it does not actually belong to them. Just like when chens staff was destroyed and the elements returned to their original owners, when Zanes core was destroyed in s3 he would not have gotten it back when he rebuilt his body if it was stolen. Even if he stole it and the PrevIceEM died and the element had no master to return to, it would have simply chosen a new host instead of returning to someone that took it by force. (The elements aren't really sentient, but they do have some sort of abstract consciousness, and they really don't like being snatched from their host.)

how does she feel about Zane being titanium?

it doesn't really phase her all that much. She's titanium, too, under her synthetic skin. She probably knew Zane back before he ever had synthetic skin. He was actually the slowest of the six original androids development-wise (He aged like a human, while the others aged extremely rapidly. he was still essentially a baby while they were all going into adulthood.) so he wasn't being fitted with skin yet when she knew him.

I thought it was funny that my school's math classes are labeled so I can talk about them and sound like a kindergartner. But now people are kinda hostile about it.... Advanced Calculus was a fine class and it was fine to shorten to Calculus and people would say "arent you well past that" even though it was really a real analysis class. But now I'm in a group and set theory class called Foundations of Algebra I and I cant even complain about it to a lay person because Algebra is something people understand

Even as group and set theory it should be easy it seems easy but this type of math requires so much precise language and thinking and I don't understand any of it 😭😭😭

i for sure have male privilege as a trans guy in spaces where i am not stealth, like in trans safe spaces and at home with family members and at work. the way women are treated is atrocious

The thing I have consistently run into is the part where my stealth fails and I become the ugly woman again, like the stealth was already a tightrope I was tripping over myself on and having to omit any details of my own personal life (not something anyone should be required to do) and then somehow some way it comes out to people and it's like you can just sense the shift. Not everyone I'll give them some credit, some people have been great.

But it's like yeah it just doesn't....it's built on such a slippery foundation and to me personally I don't feel that it's ever gotten me taken much more seriously than before, because people still infantilise me, they treat me like a little boy at 25 bc of the way I look. I still get "mansplained" everything but this time in a weirdly paternal way

Like whatever amount of macho posturing or natural masculine rizz you need to make privilege work for you is something I mostly lack. Not to say I don't get any benefits at all, but many things just don't feel like they really changed from before. It's ways in which being a woman either didn't apply to me because I lacked the femininity for it or ways where being a man didn't apply to me because I lacked the masculinity
