He laughs, “Damn. Forgot how fun you were.”

Ignoring him, you press harder on the gas.

The city lights blur past, glowing neon smeared across the windshield. You’re headed toward the western ward—half-empty, run-down, crawling with spirits too smart to be seen. "The perfect place for this bitch to hide."

Toji finally sits up a little straighter. “You nervous?” he asks, a little too casual. “You always talk this much when you’re scared?” 

There it is. 

You shoot him a side-eye. “I don’t need to be nervous. I’m not the one with a death wish.”

He grins. “Could’ve fooled me."

You slam the brakes, hard.

Toji lurches forward with a grunt, catching himself against the dash as the car jerks to a stop in front of a crumbling alleyway lit by a flickering streetlamp. "What the fuck asshole."

You glare at him. “We’re here. Get out.” You slam the car door behind you, boots hitting cracked pavement, slick with rain. 

He chuckles under his breath, swinging the door open.

Somewhere in this shitty alley, you can feel  the target watching. Waiting.

Toji rolls his shoulders, unbothered. “Let's go."

You step out beside him, ignoring the heat prickling under your skin that comes every time you’re close to him.

The cursed energy in the air pulses faintly, almost hidden—this guy isn't a joke. You scan the street. The sky is dark. Neon signs flicker against the pavement.

“Smell that?” he mutters.

You nod. “Cursed bile and ego. Smells like you.”

He huffs a laugh but doesn’t take the bait.

The cursed spirit makes its move. You both feel it—a spike of cursed energy to the left. You pivot just in time to catch a blur darting down the alleyway, limbs distorting as it moves, flesh rippling with unstable energy. 

It looks vaguely human—tall, hunched, with too many joints and a face stretched in a permanent grin. 

"Creepy" you laugh, already beginning to chase it

Toji’s right beside you—the two of you run through the alley.

The spirit glances back—and laughs.

It turns the corner. You both follow.

Only to get blasted by a sudden wall of mist. You fall onto your back. 

Toji’s there in an instant, cleaving through the cursed appendage with a brutal swing. Blood—if you can even call it that—splashes across the wall in black streaks.

The spirit shrieks and darts. You lunge for it but it slips right through a crack in the alley wall, body melting into mist.

Gone.

 "I had it." you pant, catching your breath

Toji curses, wiping blood off his blade with the edge of his shirt. The rain starts to fall harder.

You stagger back a step, chest heaving. Water soaks your hair, your clothes, your mood.

Toji’s already shaking out his hair, water sliding off him.

“This is bullshit,” you mutter, swiping rain from your eyes. 

Toji snorts. “You’re the one who let it slip through your fingers.”

You whirl on him. “I was chasing it while you were busy swinging like a drunk .”

He raises a brow, calm as ever. “Still breathing, aren’t you?”

You grit your teeth. “Barely.”

A crack of thunder rolls overhead. Water’s pooling in your boots, your jacket’s clinging to your spine, and the nearest shelter is a dingy little hotel across the street with a flickering red VACANCY sign 

No way, that hotel's got "I totally won't be murdered here" written all over it.

“Great,” you grumble. “Five-star accommodations.”

Toji follows your gaze, already heading across the street. “What, you scared of some bedbugs?”

You follow him “ The only thing im scared of is sharing a room with you” you roll your eyes.

He doesn’t slow down. “Better get used to disappointment.”

The lobby’s dead. Peeling wallpaper, a desk that’s seen better days, and a clerk who looks up from his manga just long enough to glance at the two of you and grunt.

“One room left,” the clerk says without looking up. “Queen bed.”

You exhale sharply through your nose, already done. "Are you sure there aren't any better rooms?"

He flips the page of his manga, chews his gum louder. “Unless one of you wants to sleep in the alley with the rats. They usually don’t bite.”

Toji steps up, unfazed. “We’ll take it.”

You shoot him a look.

The clerk finally looks up, eyes flicking between the two of you like he’s seen this setup before. “Sure.” He slides the key across the counter with two fingers and a sarcastic grin. “Please do not to break the headboard. It comes out of my paycheck.”

You open your mouth to argue "Excuse me?"

“Thanks” Toji cuts in, slapping cash down on the desk.

You glare at him.

He gives you that annoying look, “What? You want me to sleep in the hallway?”

You shove the door open and stomp inside. The room smells like mildew and depression. There’s a cracked TV, one sad lamp, and a queen-size bed with sheets that are definitely older than both of you and your grandparents.

Toji closes the door behind you with a soft click.

B5 S03E19 Grey 17 Is Missing previous episode - table of contents

I'm not sure how this episode is going to go, because prior to this I have always watched B5 high (I started this saga while taking hydrocodone pain meds I was allergic to post-wisdom teeth removal) or sober (which I quickly stopped doing, because the recaps were a dry and stale recounting of the plot in a most unpleasant way), but now I can't have THC for awhile (pre-op instructions for what will hopefully be my last surgery for awhile) and so I am experimenting with liveblogging while tipsy.

I did not expect Level 17 Grey to come up. Where is the missing number if Grey 17 is missing, it goes to Grey 30, but there's only 29 levels? This mystery is deeper than I expected it to be!

 The missing floor, once Garibaldi rules-lawyers the lift into stopping there, is trashed. And it says Grey 17 in a different place than the other floors. AND there's what looks like a technical diagram for a trash can where the other floors have their designation signs. Idk what this means, but it's a data point!!

Delenn is really beautiful this episode. I think the red/blue rich, saturated colors particularly flatter her. But she is always unfairly pretty and generally lickable.

Delenn's mother entered the sisters of valeria soon after Delenn was born, and she's only seen her twice. TWICE. And Delenn's father died ten years ago. She does not mention siblings. How old is Delenn? If it isn't a plot-relevant spoiler, please let me know if you know it. 

Her thoughts on missing her father are both relatable and wistful. It made me thoughtful about the same topic. 

Jeremiah says the reason the Minbari almost defeated the humans in the war was because the Minbari are closer to the truth than humans. AND we have learned that the people on Grey Level 17 is because they hacked the system and detached themselves from the rest of B5. Isolationists being isolationist on a tiny little level of a space station is illogical and funny and very, very human.

The Minbari offended by Delenn running the Rangers is called Neroon! That's super familiar and I think I've met him before. He says "During the war I killed fifty thousand of you....what's one more?" Well my dude. I bet you didn't kill fifty thousand humans in one-on-one combat. And I'm gonna go ahead and bet on Marcus's staff-fighting prowess over his.

This is a well-choreographed and filmed staff fight. 

Jeremiah on Grey Level 17 actually is super aligned with Delenn's philosophy on the universe. But is far more freaky about the practical side of the philosophy. tbh. I think Jeremiah did LSD one too many times.

Start playing at mid shadowbringer.

Lalafell (gender same with their irl gender). Have tried hyur once on a sub character but soon found they're more fond of their little lala popoto.

Play on console, can only play the game in controller.

Mostly prefer casual, slightly modern glamour, but have one set of high-fantasy adventurer-ish glamor for msq.

Is in a big FC, but have a few friends good enough to do daily roulettes with.

Hangout with these people at their FC house regularly.

If Robin has to sell their console and quit the game these friends will genuinely be worried of them.

Have tried most content in game except ultimates.

I recently received a question I could not answer, and as the premier Mabinogi propaganda poster on this website, I figured you might have something for me.

"where is the local hangout place nowadays? I see very very few players interacting with each other, I know things have quieted down but used to when you walked into dun you would see music being played people goof off with pets and transformation even pvp/duels now it’s all afk players"

It's been a few years since I've played, and even then, I tended to just AFK outside shadow missions for dailies since I couldn't take on the high level ones by myself.

Well there's a lot to this but I'll try to keep it short;

(hey it ended up shorter than it could have been)

The first thing is that time of day and channel matter a lot! For example when I play Mabi during normal daylight hours for EST I actually encounter most active players around 8pm onwards with the most activity being around 2am EST. This is true mostly for channel 3 from what I've seen.

Typically, people have a channel they stick to outside of world boss hunting and gathering. So you might need to find which channel tends to be most active during the day for you. For me it's channel 9, which is typically why you'll find me there.

The other part of this is that Mabinogi has shifted it's event system greatly to favor getting credit for being logged in for a set amount of time, or for clearing instanced content like dungeons, baltane missions, or shadow missions. This means that a lot of the active players don't really just hang out nearly as much. The ones who still do tend to look AFK even if they're not. If you see me standing around in Dunby there's a solid 50/50 chance I'm actively just doing something on the wiki, looking through my inventory, composing music, or even just not actively doing anything but I'm around.

I've noticed most players look AFK until I interact with them at which point it's turns out they were there the whole time.

Here's the biggest thing though, the game has a dying playerbase, it's on the decline sadly. Most active players are going to be actively doing things like the late game dungeons and raids but not just hanging out in town, and the casual players tend to just AFK to pass the time for events.

Be the change you want to see in the game.

This is primarily why I try to let people know they really can play this game however they want and don't need to follow any kind of meta. Because the most active players are going to either be doing solo or instanced content or just AFK/literally standing around.

The tldr is that Dunbarton still is the hangout place. You just need to catch it during a time when it's actually busy and you might be to be the one who starts playing music and gets everyone else involved.

Unfortunately, the constant server merges are a clear sign the games user numbers are much lower than they should be. On top of that the game is very clique-y.

Like, just to give you an idea; whenever I stream the game I'm asked if I'm a new player. People will literally leave when I tell them I'm not, if they didn't leave immediately they typically ask who my main is and then leave if they can't identify me as someone interesting to them.

If you're new to the game that might seem odd but not necessarily raise as many flags as if you've been around the Mabi scene for a while.

A lot of people are obsessed with new players because they want to recruit you into their clique since they want people for content. I have literally seen people give a new player tons of gold, good armor and weapons, even a bunch of cosmetics; only to then say the new player "owes" them for it and needs to become part of their guild and help them do raids. It's not always so extreme but that's the general mentality I've seen from a lot of the more dedicated but less social players.

Of course I don't want to scare any new players out of getting free stuff if someone is trying to be helpful. Just remember if someone says you owe them shit for something you never agreed to, the blacklist button is your best friend.

Regardless yeah, that one's hard to answer because you don't just wanna say "it's still Dunby but it's empty now" but that is more or less the case.
