Complaning about the mortal instruments is still so fun bc it has such real conflict hidden underneath the layer of badly written fanfic-turned-YA. Theres so much there. But its always glossed over or other fans just talking about how its problematic. Yes it is but it couldve been such real commentary about cults and militatism and incest and abuse and homophobia and xenophobia and racism and sexism and anti-semitism and (christian) supremacy with an absolute asshole of a protagonist who thinks the world revolves around him (because the narrative does! No golden eyes go unnoticed even by characters who hate him!). But it is still YA.

#im too old to actually reread the series. but ive been loving the discussion on impishidea.com for years #theres probably books out there with these themes #but the point is that it needs to be seemingly unaware of itself at first bc its fluffy and cool and YA.#but then the shit breaks loose #simon was always my favorite character bc its all being done to HIM.#clary goes along with jace in EVERYTHING. but in doing so she treats her best friend like dirt #best friend who. bc of her involvement (and his devoted friendship to her) is kidnapped #and later turned into the thing that traumatized him #remember when he couldnt watch a goofy dracula movie anymore.... thats kinda sad bc his normal is gone too!#but he wants to be normal!#he turns into a vampire and goes right back to his band and tells them everything and he just keeps chilling with them #my boy just wanted to follow clary...#and then that shadowhunter acadamy shit... please come on #get him out of there this boys arc is a TRAGEDY #the mortal instruments #sorry for infodumping jfc #anti cassandra clare #i guess. not really the point of this post #but its easy tagging for ppl who like tmi criticism #added the anti semitism because when you consider it in terms of simon being the victim of most of jaces... everything
