#and to assume that it's just the result of “lazy and unwise parenting” feels ignorant

I feel like people who brag about not letting their children (who aren't literal toddlers) on the internet at ALL and teach abstinence-only internet safety are just as dangerous as parents who let their kids have completely unrestricted and unmonitored internet access.
I mean... Yeah, in an ideal world, you might want to keep your kids off the internet. But we don't live in an ideal world, we live in a world where everything - and I mean EVERYTHING, is dependent on technology nowadays. By barring your child from the wisdom of how to navigate that world safely and knowledgably, you're barring them from a HUGE portion of opportunities and life skills that they'd need today.
Furthermore, if you start fearmongering and telling them that everyone you meet online is a scary dangerous pedophile, they're obviously not going to believe you, and then they WILL encounter an actual scary dangerous pedophile, because your idea of a "warning" was a skewed overexaggeration of reality that no child over the age of 11 or 12 would wholeheartedly believe.
I'm not saying that internet safety isn't important, or that you should let your kids roam free-range on the wide web, or that it's okay to turn your children into iPad kids, but THIS IS NOT INTERNET SAFTEY EDUCATION! YOU'RE SETTING YOUR CHILD UP FOR FAILURE! If you raise them like this without introducing them to any of the skills they'll need to navigate the online world, they're going to be taken advantage of as soon as they find a way to unlock the family computer and browse the web.
Part of the reason as to why internet safety education is so bad nowadays is also because of these kinds of parents, not just the neglectful iPad kid ones.
#sex and drugs are bad and you shouldn't do it even if#-your friends are because it is EVIL!!!!#sorry for the rant but these kinds of parents piss me off so bad#they're like parents whose only sex/drugs ed they're willing to give their kids are and then wonder why their kids end up pregnant at 14 an#also some of them are so proud of it as well?? I've seen this especially in families of upper classes#and also slightly some certain homeschoolers#like sometimes the way they talk about “omg I could NEVER let my kids go on the c-c-computer!!!” right in front of parents that do#feel weirdly snide and judgy#and also . dare I say classist#because often the families that have to resort to leaving their kids in front of iPads instead of taking care of them#is because they genuinely can't AFFORD to spend time with their children as their workplace is tearing them limb by limb#oh and also iPads and modern technology are really important mobility aids for certain children so there's that too#so dare I say again it also could be kind of ableist??#not to say that the points about iPad kids aren't valid and how some of these parents genuinely ARE neglectful and shouldn't have kids#but I think without that context a lot of people fail to engage with the discourse around children and modern technology#with as much empathy and nuance as they might need to be productive and take steps towards solutions#iPad kids are a symptom of a larger systemic problem surrounding the ongoing class struggle#and to assume that it's just the result of “lazy and unwise parenting” feels ignorant#can't go back to edit and I don't wanna retype all of that but iPads are still harmful to children when completely unmonitored btw#I think I've said enough times that they're still damaging to children's developmental skills if they aren't engaging in anything else#ever#but yk . yeah sorry I have a lot of feelings about this as a kid who was given unrestricted internet access at a v young age#due to my parents' financial struggles and undiagnosed/unaccommodated neurodivergence#my post#online safety#internet safety#OMG WAIT THESE KINDS OF PARENTS ARE ALSO SOMETIMES LIKE TRADWIFE-Y AND PROBABLY FEED INTO THE CRUNCHY TO#CONSERVATIVE PIPELINE TOO#connection I just made there#not saying that being more naturalist is inherently conservative btw but there is an ongoing pattern/pipeline with a specific
