The Ginny and Georgia fandom can often feel representative of the real world, specifically how certain parent/child relationships end up with the excusing of a parent's sacrifices being hung over the child's head, but never really allowing the child themselves to have their own problems because of it, otherwise they're being "ungrateful". And this rhetoric continuously shines through with how some Georgia fans talk about Ginny. They constantly belittle her and her problems (especially her self harm), call her dramatic for wanting answers from her mother, but never call out Georgia for overstepping Ginny's boundaries and reading her private diary, defending it by saying "Well, she partakes in reckless behavior and she keeps secrets too." Who do you think she learned it from? Like these specific fans will find ways to defend every act Georgia does under the guise of it being a "sacrifice", but can't even do the same for Ginny, a teenager who spent most of her life being uprooted before she could even make a place her home? Who had to deal with her parents' financial struggles (which caused her to be bullied mind you) on top of their tumultuous relationship?
It's also not lost on me how, during that episode where Georgia came to Ginny's therapy session, in which the whole point was to address why Ginny is the way she is, these particular fans sought every opportunity they could to villainize, not only, Ginny but her therapist as well. Especially when the therapist brought up how Georgia, as a white woman, might not be able to fully understand the struggles that her, biracial, daughter might experience/go through (like, what made her think dressing up as Scarlett O'Hara would not sit some type of way with Ginny?). Again, this session was to help Ginny, but these fans, not only, dismiss the very valid racial conversation taking place but fed into Georgia making the situation about herself. This is a big reason why I don't take people seriously when they say that they hate Ginny and criticize everything she does, but love Georgia and are ready to defend everything she does.

Note
Neutralship culture is not having the words to explain the fallacy from proshippers that I have had said to me- that not wanting people to sexualize children will lead to people censoring queer representation.
Do you see queer people as inherently paraphiliacs due to their sexuality? Are you aware of the fact that you are equating sexualizing children to queer people being visible? It's the slippery slope fallacy.
It's like the inverse of the arguments fascists make almost word-for-word, just going in the opposite direction. And then antishippers treating that as if it is an actual argument sometimes is wild since it is clearly just a fallacy.
I'm just here like "Holy shit are you aware how close you come to sounding like an alt-right asshole, you know, the people who want queer people dead?"
I'm so flabbergasted, that I'm going to answer in parts. Although I understand where you're coming from and agree with you, I can't ignore my lived experience.
"Neutralship culture is not having the words to explain the fallacy from proshippers that I have had said to me- that not wanting people to sexualize children will lead to people censoring queer representation."
I'm sorry anon, but I have to say something to you. I apologize for taking a American centric standpoint, but it's in affective tactic. Although It's most definitely a fallacy to equate queerness to pedophilia, grooming, child sexual abuse, etc. I don't see warning people that censorship of problematic will lead to cenosrship of marginalized people has a fallacy. Because that's exactly what's happening with trans people in the States. Texas, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, just to name a few, use that exact tatic to pass transphobic bills.
For context, I'm a Southern American and I've been seeing government officials, time and time without fail, justify queer censorship as "protecting children from groomers, pedophiles, etc." While actual abusers and abusive spaces are ignored.
It's not that proshippers see queers as abusers, it's that they're warning you (as catchall term) of the queerphobic possibilities of censorship. And yeah, I don't like sexualize children, but 1) that's not what their side is about or what (a lot) of them stand for and 2) Sometimes both sides are right, but fail to see it because of their differences.
I'm not for complete censorship or complete fictional "freedom", I just think that sometimes both sides are technically right and if they would but their differences aside, they would find a lot of similarities.

How Long Does Car Transport to Delaware Take? A Complete Guide
Tumblr media
When shipping a vehicle to Delaware, understanding the transportation timeline is essential. Several factors influence how long the process takes, including the distance, shipping method, seasonality, and carrier availability. If you're planning to use a professional Car Transport to Delaware service like Rapid Auto Shipping, this guide will provide you with a detailed overview of what to expect.
Factors Affecting Car Transport Time to Delaware
Distance and Route
The most significant factor in determining how long it will take for your car to reach Delaware is the distance between the pickup and drop-off locations. The longer the route, the more time the shipment will take.
Short-Distance Transport: If you're shipping your car from a nearby state such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Maryland, delivery can be completed within a few days.
Long-Distance Transport: If your vehicle is coming from the West Coast (e.g., California, Washington), it may take over a week due to the extensive distance.
Transport Type
The type of transport service you choose will also impact the duration of the shipment.
Open Transport: The most common and cost-effective option, but may have slightly longer wait times due to multiple vehicle pickups and deliveries along the route.
Enclosed Transport: Offers additional protection but may take slightly longer since fewer carriers provide enclosed shipping, leading to limited availability.
Seasonal Demand
The time of year significantly affects car shipping times:
Winter: Bad weather conditions such as snow and ice can slow down transport times.
Spring & Summer: Increased demand for auto transport services during peak moving seasons can result in longer wait times for carrier availability.
Fall: A more balanced season with fewer delays and moderate pricing.
Carrier Availability
Not all routes have immediate carrier availability. Some locations may require additional time to schedule a driver, especially in remote areas where transport trucks are less frequent.
Delays Due to Road Conditions
Traffic congestion, road construction, and unexpected detours can cause delays. Additionally, extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes or snowstorms may impact transport schedules.
Estimated Transit Times for Car Transport to Delaware
While each shipment varies, here are the general transit time estimates for shipping a car to Delaware with Rapid Auto Shipping:
Nearby States (e.g., New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland): Typically 1 to 3 days.
Midwest (e.g., Illinois, Ohio, Michigan): Expect 3 to 5 days.
Southern States (e.g., Florida, Texas, Georgia): Usually 5 to 7 days.
West Coast (e.g., California, Washington, Arizona): Can take 7 to 10 days.
How to Speed Up Your Car Transport to Delaware
If you need your car to arrive as quickly as possible, consider the following options:
Choose Expedited Shipping
Most transport companies, including Rapid Auto Shipping, offer expedited shipping for an additional cost. This prioritizes your shipment, ensuring quicker pickup and delivery.
Be Flexible with Pickup and Drop-off Locations
Choosing a more accessible pickup and drop-off location near major highways or cities can reduce transit time, as carriers prefer well-traveled routes.
Book in Advance
Scheduling your car transport well ahead of time ensures better carrier availability, reducing the risk of last-minute delays.
Opt for Terminal-to-Terminal Shipping
While door-to-door shipping is more convenient, terminal-to-terminal transport can sometimes be faster, as carriers make fewer stops along the way.
What to Expect on Delivery Day
Once your vehicle reaches Delaware, you should be prepared for the final steps:
Vehicle Inspection: The driver will inspect the car with you to ensure there is no damage during transit.
Bill of Lading: You will be required to sign this document confirming the vehicle's condition and delivery.
Final Payment: If you haven’t prepaid, you may need to settle the balance before receiving your car.
Additional Factors That May Affect Shipping Time
Transport Route Efficiency
Shipping a car along well-traveled routes with major highways can be quicker than less frequently traveled paths. The efficiency of a transport route is often based on:
Traffic congestion
Road closures or detours
Availability of gas stations and rest stops for the carriers
Type of Vehicle Being Shipped
Some vehicles may require specialized handling, which could extend shipping time. Examples include:
Classic or Luxury Cars: May require enclosed transport, which is less common and might take longer to arrange.
Oversized Vehicles: Trucks, RVs, and other large vehicles may need special permits or routes, leading to longer shipping times.
Non-Running Vehicles: Cars that are inoperable require additional equipment, such as a winch, which could slow down the loading and unloading process.
Number of Stops Along the Way
Most transport carriers handle multiple deliveries per trip. The number of pickups and drop-offs on the route can impact the overall delivery time. Choosing a single-car transport option, though more expensive, may reduce delays caused by multiple deliveries.

Closure pt. 2
Uhm...due to personal reasons (lmao) this was supposed to be a marathon, but I’ll just...yeah. I’ll just leave the second part right here and I hope you like it. As I explained in the last one, this is from the canon divergence I share with @healing-winston-pratt and it’s a series of fics about grief, basically.
You can read the Georgia chapter (”I Kill Giants”) here
And this is the Evander chapter, so this is all the background you need;
Evander’s wife, Sandra Wade.
Sandra and Arthur’s portrait: https://healing-winston-pratt.tumblr.com/post/626983013669044224/sandra-obrien-wade-and-arthur-evander-wade
Tag list: @novadreamer95438  @idkimbadwithusernamesandstuff @obsidianfr3sk @novas-tunnel-of-anxiety
Evander
Lay Me Down
You told me not to cry when you were gone But the feeling's overwhelming, it's much too strong Can I lay by your side, next to you, you?
“Sandy, please… “
“No, dad. I need to see him. I need to… “
Sandra Wade stopped in the middle of her sentence, as a bush of red hair caught her eye. However, those were curls instead of straight hair, which meant that, indeed, that wasn’t her husband.
That wasn’t Evander Wade. Renegade. Husband. Dad to be.
After the explosion or… whatever that thing had been, that gave powers to everyone in the world, right after the sudden lift of the city, the telephone lines and television lines had stopped working, which had caused her to go uncommunicated.
A Renegade wife who, if that weren’t bad enough on its own, was also pregnant, completely unable to contact her husband.
She had no way to know where he was, because even his location device had been disconnected at some point, leaving the last trace of Evander at the Arena.
It was the morning after three consecutive disasters.
1: The terrorist attack to the Arena.
2: The lift of the city.
3: The explosion Sandra refused to call a supernova like everyone else was doing because…
Where the heck had they gotten a star from?
Maybe she was just stressed and the pregnancy hormones were playing tricks on her, but she couldn’t help but think about how people were willing to come up with every ridiculous thing possible just to spice things up.
It wasn’t funny.
Nor was it spectacular.
It was mean. And cruel. And Sandra couldn’t stand listening to them, just like she couldn’t stand listening to the rest of her family telling her to stop, because worrying so much was going to hurt the baby.
That wasn’t a nice thing to say to a worried person. And if she was only worried before, now she was in a frantic state, distraught, as her step-dad drove her through the city, while she analyzed every tall, red-haired man with clothes that looked even vaguely similar to Blacklight’s.
The access of cars to the streets was restricted, but that didn’t stop Dad, telling the patrol units he was driving a pregnant woman. Just because this was an emergency. He wouldn’t have done it under different circumstances.
The city, on the other hand, looked pretty good for having been lifted, because people also wanted her to believe Simon and Hugh’s youngest son had been able to fix the mess.
Sandra refused to believe any of it, for the sake of not wanting to believe it; given that he had such a dangerous job, Evander had always advised her to be prepared for the worst; ever since they had gotten married.
However, when he left for the public execution and exposition of Agent N at the Arena, he promised he would come back, and Sandra recalled it perfectly because he was touching her belly, he said:
“See you in a few hours, Sandy.”
And he sealed that promise with a kiss.
Now, Sandra didn’t agree with that execution, because…maybe executions were something that shouldn’t be shown to the public. But she knew that Evander had to attend. After all, he was part of the Renegade Council…and, again, he had promised he would come back.
And that was a hundred times more valuable and meaningful than a tasteless and empty threat about how someday the worst would happen.
Evander promised he would come back in a few hours, which meant he had to be alive.
Maybe he was just busy.
Maybe he was running late.
Maybe he was looking for a payphone that would, for some reason, work and allow him to contact her (and that was the reason why she was keeping her cellphone close).
He would come.
He would come back.
He would be with her during the birth, because he knew how scared Sandra was of labor pain, and because he knew they weren’t getting a C-section because the only thing Sandra feared more than labor pain was being conscious while somebody ripped her skin open.
Evander wouldn’t leave her alone in this, would he?
He wouldn’t. He promised he wouldn’t, so now he had to come back.
He had to meet his baby.
Evander had to come home.
He couldn’t leave her.
He couldn’t…
“Sandra, please… “
Hugh Everhart’s hands were on her arms, though Sandra couldn’t recall having entered the Headquarters. Maybe it was the fact she had grown to know those hallways very well, and she had come to a point where she just navigated through them by routine.
Besides, Evander was his husband.
Hugh had no right to stop her from coming in.
“Sandra, stop. Please.”
“I need to… “
“Sandy. “
“GET OUT OF MY WAY, HUGH! I NEED TO SEE HIM! “
He…
He was alive.
It couldn’t had happened any other way.
Evander knew.
Evander knew he had to stay alive for her. He had to stay alive for little unborn Arthur, his son. He had to stay alive for himself.
He was young.
He was healthy.
He had so much to give.
So much to live.
So much to go through still.
So many family vacations.
So many sleepless nights and rainy afternoons.
He had so much love to give yet.
He had promised it.
He had said it in his vows, that they would be one forever, and that they would have 4 children because that was what they had agreed when they were dating.
They had to get pregnant 3 more times. And he had to see them grow, inside and outside of Sandra’s womb.
“Take me to him. I need to see him.” Sandra begged, and she saw Hugh’s whole brave, unbreakable facade become small, surrendering to her pleading.
But surrender for him didn’t mean moving.
Hugh Everhart didn’t take her anywhere, nor did he speak and, for a moment, he didn’t even breathed.
And at the same time, he said everything he had to say, until there was nothing left, and Sandra stepped backwards, her body falling into Dad’s arms, who held her by the shoulders, as she held her belly so tightly she almost felt she was touching Arthur through layers and layers of skin.
“No.”
“… I’m sorry, Sandra. “
“No. “
He had promised.
He had promised he would come back.
He had promised to hold her hand while she was in pain.
He had promised to hold their baby.
He had promised he would stay alive and they would love each other as long as they could, until they were old and sick.
Evander had promised he would come back.
But he wouldn’t.
Evander was gone.
And through all that madness, Sandra kept stepping backwards and backwards and backwards, until Dad managed to stop her.
So then she tried to fall on her knees, but they stopped again.
So she screamed.
And no one, no one dared to stop her from doing that.
-.-
Sandra kept screaming almost every day for a whole month after Evander’s passing; after a funeral she refused to attend, surrounded by a pile of yellow folders full of papers she was yet to sign.
She screamed for so long, she didn’t even had to be convincing to cloak her labor screams with grief.
By the time Kasumi Hasegawa arrived to the house and broke into her room after a distressed call from Sandra’s parents, he was already there.
Arthur had been sleeping on Sandra’s chest for over an hour when Kasumi Hasegawa found both of them in the bathroom floor, where Sandra had given birth to him leaned against the bathtub.
Yet, the only thing she could say as her numb eyes met Kasumi’s terrified ones, was:
“I should’ve gone to the hospital.”
Kasumi agreed with that, because she did force her to go to the hospital afterwards, where she was put on some medications and stitches while, fortunately, Arthur was declared to be healthy.
Sandra didn’t hold him at first. Not really. Because her arms were too tired from holding him for an hour, and her mind was too tired to do anything at all.
The rest of the Council came to visit, of course, and they kept telling her how handsome that baby was until she politely asked them to shut up.
For the first 3 days, her family did the mothering… which, she liked to call it like that because the baby had no father.
It wasn’t until later, when they begged her to give herself and her baby a second opportunity, because the baby wasn’t reacting well to formula milk and, apparently, was missing his mother’s presence.
“We all lost him.” Kasumi told her.
“But you get to have what’s left of him… and he, conveniently, has his eyes.
And, yes, indeed, Arthur had Evander’s eyes.
So bright and grey.
And things were what they were.
The moment Sandra agreed to hold him, she got to experience the love she had felt growing inside of her for 9 months.
When Evander broke his promise and never came back, Sandra and Arthur were left with each other.
The tragedy of the circumstances would chase her for years, which was something she was aware and willing to accept.
But when he left, Arthur stayed here, as a reminder there was ever somebody named Evander Wade, and this child represented the love he had felt towards someone at some point.
And Sandra loved him, because even if it hadn’t been so, he was perfect on his own, with his tiny hands, tiny legs and tiny everything.
Someday, he would understand his father had left his side not because he wanted to, but because it had happened like that.
In the meantime, Sandra would make sure Arthur knew he had her.
Maybe her heart would forever be missing the part Evander had taken with him.
However, it was still beating.
And she still had two arms that could perfectly cradle a baby.

Georgian Language
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to start speaking a completely different language, what difficulties come with it and how must it feel for someone speaking a non-native language? Well, a good example would be me. I am from the country Georgia, and my native language is Georgian, as well as Russian.
Tumblr media
Being able to converse with people in different languages, with different cultural beliefs and different ethnicity can be challenging, language-wise. At first, before I became fluent in English, it was incredibly hard for me to convey my actual thoughts, and I felt very frustrated to the point where I did not even want to speak up. I was afraid of making mistakes while talking, and one of the most stressful things was not being able to fully understand what I was being told. But I enjoy speaking, making connections with people, and establishing good relationships with them, which is why I tried my best to get over my fears, learn as much as I possibly could to become fluent, and then I started making public speeches, going to the debate tournaments, and it all helped bring things back to normal for me.
Tumblr media
That experience has taught me a lot, not only has it been useful for me to improve my english skills, but also it has taught me to face the problem, instead of escaping from it. Now every time I find myself in an uncomfortable situation, I simply accept it, and I acknowledge that something seems to be off and I either fix it or be okay with it, if there’s nothing I can do about it. Also, it’s taught me that if you try hard enough, you will eventually get the desired result. And it has helped me grow myself even more.
Tumblr media
Now ask a random person on the street, where Georgia is on the map - 80% of them won’t know, 19.3% might point to Georgia States, and the remaining percent might get it right. Georgia is a Caucasus country, located between Black Sea and Caspian Sea below Eastern Russia with Turkey and Armenia, with Azerbaijan to the South and East. Now here’s where the geographical dilemma arises, is Georgia in Europe or Asia?! Some will argue that it stands East of Turkey which is kind of seen as a gateway to Asia but culturally it identifies closer with Europe. Ultimately, you can call Georgians - Caucasians.  A lot may say the origin of the name Georgia  comes from the word Gurg/Gurgen meaning “ the land of the wolves”. We Georgians call our country Saqartvelo - Land of Kartvelians which is another word for Georgia. So that was a brief explanation of a country I come from. The reason why I decided to deliver this message was because I am going to be talking about cultures associated with Georgia, and that leads us to our first cultural object of discussion - Georgian Language.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A language is a structured system of communication consisting of speech and gestures. Have you ever wondered, where do all the languages come from; do they all have a common origin, or what is the root of all languages and where did it all originate from? Me too, and no they did not originate from the Georgian language, but Georgian language goes back as far as 300 B.C., and is the common ancestral language with other South Caucasian languages. The language is written in Georgian script, and technically we have three alphabets but we only use one. The alphabet has 33 letters, and here goes some “almost impossible to pronounce” letters : “ts” ; “kh” ; “ch” ; “y” ; “t”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Georgian language is quite complex, so are the verbs:
They tend to be long due to agglutination.
They can include reference to the subject and the direct and indirect objects, e.g.,’ I gave it to him’ is one word in Georgian, a phenomenon known as polypersonalism
Verbs are usually analyzed in series, called screeves,  each of which represents tense (present, past, future), aspect (imperfective and perfective) and mood (indicative, conditional and subjunctive).
There are four classes of verbs. Each class has its own set of conjugation rules for all screeves.
There is a large number of irregular verbs.
There is a distinction between stative and motion verbs; the later are precisely defined through the use of directional prefixes.
Tumblr media
To give you an idea, I’ll translate an Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the Georgian script:
“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
“ყველა ადამიანი იბადება თავისუფალი და თანასწორი თავისი ღირსებითა და უფლებებით. მათ მინიჭებული აქვთ გონება და სინდისი და ერთმანეთის მიმართ უნდა იქცეოდნენ ძმობის სულისკვეთებით.”
“Qvela adamiani ibadeba t’avisup’ali dat’anascori tavisi g’irsebit’a da uplebebit’. Mat minicebuli ak’vt’ goneba da sindisi da ert’manet’is mimart’ unda ik’c’eodnen zmobis suliskvet’ebit’.”
Tumblr media
That would be all about my language. Here’s some pictures of Georgia though, that you might end interesting.
Tumblr media
We have a lot of mountains and very old castles that date back as fr as 12th century. Back in 12th century, we had a women named Tamar, who was King, and not the queen but a King of Georgia back then, who did a great job protecting Georgian people from Spars people.
Tumblr media
Tourists usually like to go to Batumi, that is a place bordering the Black Sea, or the mountains.

And finally, here's our traditional food:

voyage to the heart’s land
so, i wrote a fic for @renelemaires because i’m not good at headcanons as was initially requested, but i can do this apparently. sending happiness and good vibes your way!
voyage to the heart’s land; renee lemaire after the war w/ vague hints of baberoe, renee/gene and possible future renee/gene/babe. 2969 words.
Renee left Belgium two years after the war ended.
She loved her home, but the magic of the forests and memories of running around the city square in the blush of youth no longer held the easy charm that she associated with those times. And so, one day, in the height of July’s peaking summer, she pulled out an old atlas of her father’s – yellowed at the edges, curls crinkling on the front of most pages, one corner missing and taking a chuck of the Soviet Union, Egypt and Newfoundland with it – and looked for something new.
She bookmarked Morocco for the language and Portugal for the ocean, but stopped completely when she reached the United States. Jagged borderlines between oddly shaped provinces and big – so much bigger than Belgium, bigger than Europe – and thought of Eugene. She traced her fingers down the neatly labeled Appalachian Montagnes, bypassing the likes of Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and sweeping over until she landed on Louisiana; little dots pointing out the towns of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. She tapped idly on the image and thought of the Eugene’s low voice and rough accent, the weary determination in his eyes. Her hands stilled.
 Louisiana is was then.
Her mother kissed her cheeks at the train station. Her father tucked a riot of bills in her pocket and when she tried to protest, only said to write when she reached America. The subsequent journey took her out to England and then to an ocean liner setting sail for New York. She spent every waking moment she could on deck, drinking in the spray of ocean air and watching contentedly as an Irish mother of four tired to corral her children unsuccessfully.
Once she landed in New York, she asked the nearest shop owner – a plump, friendly woman with a thick Polish accent – where she could find a telegraph office and was given an escort in the form of the woman’s ten year old son who delivered her to her destination with a gap toothed smile. She sent her message; carefully relaying the address that was postmarked on the envelope of the single letter Eugene had written her a year earlier, hoping he hadn’t gotten the urge to pick up roots as well in the time that had lapsed. From there, it was off to the currency exchange station, and then to a hotel. She spent two days in New York, enjoying the rush of bodies and movement despite herself, listening to the array of languages and marveling at the lights that never seemed to dim. On the third morning, she ventured to Grand Central Station and caught a train headed to Philadelphia.
The ride was surprisingly short, but it was also dark and her next train wasn’t due to leave until the morning, but – to her surprise – when she stepped onto the platform there was a giant hand-written sign with her name on it in blocky letters. She blinked, caught out and cautiously approached the strangers huddled around it. One of the men, short and solidly built, braced on a pair of crutches, beamed when he spotted her approach and waved her over.
“Hello?” She asked, still confused. The pretty – and lone – woman standing beside the man in question rolled her eyes at the man’s enthusiasm and held out a hand of Renee when she got close enough.
“Ignore him,” she said, waving a hand at the man’s indignant bark, “I told him that no woman in their right mind would want to walk over to a group of strange rabble without reason, but he insisted,” she smiled, “I’m Frannie.”
“Renee,” she answered bemused, “as you know, apparently. How did –”
“Babe sent us,” the man said, accent broad and unfamiliar, but not unappealing, “Doc told him you were coming and he told us.”
“Babe?” Renee asked, looking at Frannie to see if he was being serious.
“You’ll meet him when you get down there,” he said, “My name’s Bill. Guarnere. I served with the Doc. And this here –” he looked over at the person holding the sign and then whacked at the legs peeking out underneath it with one crutch, “— put that down, ya idiot. There’s a lady present. This is Ralph Spina, one ‘a Doc’s fellow medics.”
Ralph lowered the sign with her name and sent Bill a caustic glare, then looked back at her and nodded. “Nice ta meet you, ma’am.”
“Renee is fine,” she smiled at the trio, unduly charmed, “it’s nice to meet you as well.”
Frannie stepped forward and looped an arm through Renee’s and pointed at her bags, “Ralph get those, will you? Right this way, honey. No friend of Doc Roe is spending the night in some roachy motel. You like Italian? I was thinking ravioli or gnocchi, maybe.”
Renee dropped the protest that she could carry her own luggage when Ralph picked it up immediately and followed in Frannie’s footsteps without complaint. She thought about Eugene and this Babe person arranging for her to have a welcoming party and let the bickering chatter between the three American’s envelope her in gentle waves.
The dinner was amazing (“Now that rationing’s lifting, makes getting the right ingredients easier.” Bill laughed, wiggling his eyebrows at Ralph, and their other friend Joe Toye, who only rolled his eyes at Bill’s bombastic tone, “No more Army noodles here.”) and the company even better as they told her endless stories about what seemed to be every single man they’d served with. At some point, she realized she was laughing so hard that tears were actually welling in her eyes and the salt in them felt like a cleansing of some kind. Like a layer of heavy silt had been washed from her soul. She fell asleep on her borrowed bed that night with a smile on her face.
To repay their generosity, she woke up early – not difficult as her internal clock was a mess from slipping between time zones so quickly – and made a somewhat augmented version of her mother’s waffles and homemade hot chocolate for everyone.
Frannie took a sip while the boys ate seconds – or in Joe’s case, thirds – and said: “That was really good. If everything you make is this good, you should sell it. No point in giving heaven away for free.”
Renee thought about lazy mornings making bread with her mother in the kitchen of their old house. Kneading the dough, watching it rise and the whole house filling up with the smell as it baked. Regular cooking had never been something she’d had much patience for, but baking was something else entirely. She’d always found a peace in the careful measurements and methodical movements; her mind could wander away and rest from its troubles. The look on someone’s face when they took a bite was only a bonus.
She stared down at her hands and thought, for the first time in a long time, that maybe there was something special about them.
“Maybe,” she murmured and enjoyed the contentment of a job well done.
Frannie and the boys saw her off hours later. “Write, you hear,” Frannie said, hugging her tightly, “I need more women in my life that’ll understand my pain.”
“I am a goddamned joy and you know it,” Bill argued, but also pulled Renee into a one-armed embrace. “Tell those idiots to write too, ain’t like they don’t have pens and paper in the swamp.”
“I will. And thank you,” she directed the last at the whole group, who waved away the gratitude with mumbled protests and continued waving as she stepped onto the train.
This one took her to Charleston, down through rolling green hills and farmlands that gave the country some space, opening up into long tracks of fields that both reminded her of home and was nothing at all like it. It was only a stop over this time, but the hour of rest came with polite men and women, an ocean view and accents that were similar to Eugene’s. The leg after took her down to Georgia where she drank an ice-cold Coca-Cola from a Soda Fountain in the rail yard and watched a group of kids played a game right in the middle of the street with a ball and stick; jeers and cheers filtering into the open door of the Fountain. From Savannah, the train took her all the way to New Orleans.
New Orleans was like stepping into a different world. Music seemed to be infused in the air around her from the minute she got off the train; slow saxophone’s and staccato snares, trumpets whisking a melody away into the melting summer breeze. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, taking in the atmosphere. She walked around some of the city; wandering into the French Quarter and marveling at the architecture and listening to accented French coming in fits and stops from the residents who tipped their hats at her as she passed. Eventually, she found herself in a kind of civic center and asked for directions to the town that Eugene had written to her from. The kindly older man working there, showed her where it was on a map and arranged for her to get a cab down.
The bayou, as she learned the whole area was referred to, was almost like something out of a fairy tale. Swamps, running into jungle forests and moss covering everything from the trees to the roofs of the houses half-hidden from the road. The cab dropped her off at a little general store/café that the driver in question assured her would be helpful if she was looking for someone in particular.
A few curious eyes lit on her when she walked into the open aired restaurant, but the stares were without hostility and her purpose was quickly deduced correctly because a kind looking woman with wild grey-touched curls in a faded red dress came up to her with a smile.
“You look like a woman who could use a hand,” she said, eyeing the suitcase and bag at Renee’s feet, “I’m Bea, what can I help you with, sugar?”
“I was told that you could help me find someone?” Renee asked.
Bea’s eyes widened and she whistled lowly. “Honey, that is some pretty voice you got there. As for help, I know just about every person in this neck of the woods; and if I don’t, then they ain’t here. Who you looking for?”
 “Eugene Roe.”
A fond smile settled on Bea’s lined face. “That boy got popular in Europe,” she commented and then led Renee over to one of the wrought iron tables in the café. “You sit tight and I’ll give ‘im a call, alright?”
Renee thanked her and sat there, nerves suddenly erupting her stomach as she waited. It had been so long and she had basically invited herself. Maybe he’d be cross? But no, why send a welcoming committee in Philadelphia otherwise? She drummed her knuckles on the table and was only interrupted when Bea set some iced, amber colored liquid in front of her; condensation beading at the tall glass.
“Sweet tea,” Bea explained, “It’s a staple down here. Best get used to it, if you’re staying.”
Renee took a drink, flavor bursting across her tongue. The coolness of it hit her and relaxed some of the tension that had sprung up. “It’s good,” she said, a little surprised.
“Glad to hear it,” Bea replied, grinning. She patted Renee on the shoulder and then twirled away to serve another customer.
When Eugene finally arrived, it took Renee a moment to recognize him. Gone were the worn green army fatigues, and in its place was a pair of denim jeans and a button up checked shirt, sleeves rolled up to the elbows. His black hair was a bit longer and his skin had lost the deathly pale hue that she got used to seeing in Bastogne, warming to a pale caramel under his home’s beating sun. She couldn’t stop the smile from lighting up her face at the sight and stood up, so that he could see her better.
Sure enough, he spotted her and froze in the middle of the café before a more subdued, but no less genuine version of his own, smile crossed his features. He resumed his walk and when he was standing in front of her and – after a moment’s hesitation – gently pulled her into his arms. The breath she’d been painfully holding in her lungs gave way, and she breathed in the woodsy citrus kick of his aftershave as she held on.
“It’s good to see you,” he said into her hair, before pulling away to look at her.
“Vous aussi,” she said which softened his smile into loveliness.
 “These your bags?”
 “Oui. They are.”
“Well, okay then,” he reached down and picked them up, “I got the guest room made up,” he stopped for a moment and then shrugged, expression sheepish, “unless you’d rather stay at an inn? Your choice, o’ course.”
“Your guest room is fine,” she said, following him out of the café, where they waved goodbyes to Bea, who hassled them into agreeing to lunch the next day, “as long as your friend doesn’t mind?”
A series of emotions flickered over his face before settling into rueful. “Edward don’t mind; he’s the one been fretting about pillows or some such since your wire.”
The last knot of anxiety loosened in her gut at that. “Then lead on.”
Eugene’s – “Gene, I insist.” – house was a medium sized bungalow set back a little way from the dirt road and surrounded by a sparse, moss ridden wood with the nearest neighbors half-a-mile down the road. It was sweet and Renee found an instant kinship to the large dormer windows and wide porch that extended out from the house.
“It’s not much,” he said, almost sounding apologetic.
Renee refrained from saying that any standing building was stunning to her now, no matter the size or color or shape. “It’s beautiful,” she told him honestly.
They were greeted at the dog by a floppy eared beagle whose whole hindquarters wriggled when Renee leaned down to pet him. “That’s Rex,” Gene said, rolling his eyes good naturedly at the pup, “wandered into the yard one day and never left. Ain’t much of a guard dog, as you can see.”
“He doesn’t need to be. He’s lovely exactly the way he is,” she said, laughing when he took a chance to lick at her cheek.
Gene led them into the house. Renee took in the cozy decorating, lacking a bit in the way that most male driven houses did, and was examining a series of photos on an end table when the last resident of the house came bounding around the corner, stopping abruptly when he saw her. He was as Bill had described him – skinny, redhaired, eyes too big for his ugly mug – though she would argue the ‘ugly’ descriptor; he had a sweet, open face that put her at ease immediately.
“Hey,” he said, practically vibrating in anticipation, giving her a half-wave from his place in the doorway and biting his lip, “you must be Renee. It’s nice to meet you, finally.”
“Enchante, Edward. I’ve heard much about you.”
“You have? From – wait, Edward?” He looked over at Gene who was deliberately turned away, though Renee could see the hint of a pleased grin on his face. “Really, Gene; Edward?” He turned back to Renee in a mild huff. “Call me Babe, everyone does.”
“Babe,” she agreed, noticing that some of the stiffness in his frame had disappeared in the wake of the mix-up. Probably, that was Gene’s intention all along.
“Right. Are you hungry? Gene was making some kind of stew thing –”
“It’s jambalaya, Babe, you know this.”
“— before Bea called. It’ll make your senses wish they’d died, but it tastes amazing.”
Renee nodded. “I’d love to try some.”
She sat at the dining table as Gene and Babe worked seamlessly around each other in the small kitchen, and rather than feeling awkward or forgotten, both men managed to include her in their ritual, making her feel as at home for the first time since the bombs began to fall. Babe, in a similar vein to Bill, gave her all the gossip about town, while Gene corrected the most outlandish claims the redhead made (“It did not try to eat you, Babe.” “It wanted too – I could tell, stared at my leg like it was a rack of ribs.” “It was an alligator snapping turtle not an actual gator.” “Well, what he hell’s it got alligator in its name for then, huh? Huh Gene? Answer me that!”) with a well-rehearsed fondness.
The jambalaya was as Babe advertised it – amazing, but eye wateringly spicy – and was finished off with powered French pastries Gene called beignets. Gene asked about her journey and she indulged them with the story, making sure to thank them for setting Frannie and the others in her path.
“Bill says that you two must write him sometime. He was quite insistent,” she said teasingly.
Babe snorted. “Sure. Tomorrow I’ll send him a telegram: Dear Bill, screw you, Love Babe.”
She laughed and Babe grinned all the brighter for it. Gene shook his head, but his eyes kept bouncing between them with a contentedness that Renee was glad to see he was capable of. It made the restless, inadequate feelings in her heart go into hibernation. A tranquil hush came to a rest in her blood. Whatever may come, she thought she could be herself here. Perhaps even be truly happy.
It was a something to look forward too. A gift.
And she intended to enjoy it.

Dickheads of the Month: November 2020
As it seems that there are people who say or do things that are remarkably dickheaded yet somehow people try to make excuses for them or pretend it never happened, here is a collection of some of the dickheaded actions we saw in the month of November 2020 to make sure that they are never forgotten.
Nobody was expecting Donald Trump to concede defeat gracefully, but bloody hell, between the completely batshit insane conspiracy theory bollocks from himself and the rancid Trump offspring to Rudy Giuliani making complete fools of themselves even before he had to give a press conference from the parking lot of a landscaping firm as nobody checked which Four Seasons it was, before threatening to outlaw Twitter because people made fun of his little table (yes, that sentence does make sense), nobody could have expected just how tempramental toddlers are now thinking it's a bit much
...although somehow the Tory government managed to have an even worse response, because not only did posting a boilerplate jpeg to congratulate Joe Biden for his victory the laziest response possible, but then it turned out that they only had a celebratory jpeg for a Trump victory and hastily edited it on Paint so that Biden’s name was on there, but did a cack-handed job of it even though a.) Common sense dictates you have one for each candidate ready in advance, and b.) Given they had several days to accept which way the wind was blowing, the fact they did the most cack-handed job says everything you need to know
Smirking cretin Priti Patel has bullied Home Office staff and, having initially tried to bury the report, the best the Tory government could come up with to try and make this go away was claim that she was bullying her subordinates by accident while proven liar Boris Johnson claimed she had done nothing wrong, numerous members of the Tory government either said that as they hadn’t seen her bullying anyone she must be innocent or tried claiming she was “accused” of bullying instead of found guilty of bullying, and to top it all off we had Michael Gove’s wife Sarah Vine accused anyone calling Patel of being a bully racist while Alison Pearson said Patel can’t be a bully as she isn’t tall enough. Also, did I mention this came out during national Bullying Week?
...and just a thought for Jess Phillips after she decided to weigh in, considering it’s on record that you bullied Diane Abbott (and have gleefully said how you told her to “Fuck off” on various occasions) it's not a good idea for you to try and act as you’re above bullying as you will get called out for your hypocrisy
Murderer Amanda Knox thought it would be a really funny joke to suggest that, no matter what the election result, the next four years couldn’t be as bad as the four years she spent studying abroad.  You know, those four years where she murdered Meredith Kercher and got away with it
So it turns out that the moral compass of the Tory government says that it is fine for Dominic Cummings to be happy to sacrifice the elderly if it protects the economy during a pandemic while displaying that he doesn’t know how herd immunity works, purging 21 MPs from the party for not buying into his No Deal Britait Jonestown, siphoning hundreds of millions of pounds into the pockets of his mates in various dodgy contracts, or flagrantly violating the lockdown rules by driving several hundred miles to Durham (where he owns a house he doesn't pay council tax for) after testing positive for Covid - but as soon as he calls Carrie Symonds “Princess Nut Nuts” he’s out the door...for a staged photo op, even though he is remaining in his job until December, which is when he was going to leave anyway
...and we should mention Laura Kuenssberg bullishly stating that Cummings was going nowhere in the wake of Lee Cain being told he could leave when his contract is up in December but they want to make it look like he is being fired, but within twelve hours saying that Cummings would always be leaving in December as a blog post in January stated, which not only asks if anyone has checked the archived version of that blog in case any edits were made in mid-November, but also how she can justify her £290k a year salary if she can get a story that badly wrong that Cummings’ blog disagreed with her
There’s a reason why Lindsey Graham isn't popular in the Senate and it isn’t because he questions if Biden won the election, it's because he’s telling people to “misplace” the votes for Biden which they are counting so that Trump could claim that he won Georgia instead of losing Georgia, demanding a recount, then losing Georgia
Once again proven liar Boris Johnson demonstrated that lockdown rules apply to the little people but not to him or his inner circle, as he met with fellow Tory MP Lee Anderson in person rather than via Zoom as the lockdown rules state, didn't wear a mask as lockdown rules state, and clearly didn’t social distance as a picture of him with Anderson taken during the meetings shows they are not two metres apart as lockdown rules state, which means that he had to spend two weeks self-isolating as a direct result
Has anyone told Keir Starmer that The Board of Deputies weren’t on the ballot for Labour leadership?  Because by his performative act of refusing to restore the party whip to Jeremy Corbyn after his performative suspension, which he did after the BoD stamped their feet and demanded the whip not be restored, he’s not doing a good job of demonstrating leadership
First of all it was news that Steve Bannon uses Twitter, as surely he should have flounced off for Parler years ago.  But secondly, the real news is how he used his Twitter account to call for Anthony Fauci to be beheaded - at which point he suddenly couldn’t use his Twitter account anymore
According to Iain Duncan Smith putting the UK into a second lockdown is “giving in to the scientific advisors” as if during a pandemic, which the last time I checked was a scientific matter, you should instead be listening to Julia Halfwit-Brewer, Dan Wootton, Alison Pearson or Isabel Oakeshott rather than people qualified to talk about what to do in the face of a global pandemic
Nice Guy Rishi Sunak proposed a return of Eat Out To Help Out for Christmas.  You know, the thing which has been directly linked with causing a spike in Covid numbers in August?
Tory arrogance was neatly summed up by George Eustace casually saying that, if Lurpak didn’t want to incur the massive price hikes of Britain crashing out of the EU without a paddle, all they have to do is move their entire base of operations to the UK
The fact that Disney have been trying to justify their refusal to even issue royalty statements to Alan Dean Foster for his novelisations of the Star Wars and Alien franchises and have simply been pocketing the revenue made by the books continued sales by claiming they only purchased the license and not the liability, which is a particularly unique interpretation of copyright law
It was only a matter of time before The Daily Mail started trying to create dirt about Marcus Rashford because he has the sheer gall to say that feeding children is not a bad thing, which they did by reporting the horrors of him...buying a house for his mother
Twitter troll Ben Bradley had a stellar month, first by standing up in Commons and asking why there isn't a Minister for Women while also showing a terrifying inability to understand what equality is, and soon followed that up by quoting Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech by claiming that it was about equality - only for Bernice King to tell him that, no, her father’s speech was about eliminating racism from our society
I think that it's time for The Daily Express to admit that, when they're running articles saying that it’s Remainers who are to blame for Trump getting dumped onto the street, that maybe they have a problem
The Streisand Effect still hasn’t reached WWE judging by their continuing to double down on demanding their employees independent contractors stop earning money via third-party platforms manifested in their releasing Thea Trinidad from her contract in spite her Twitch account always being under her real name and not her WWE moniker of Zelina Vega
It was a coincidence that the Jewish Labour Movement decided to hold their annual conference on the Palestinian Day of Solidarity.  Of course it was...
This month it was Fin Taylor who demonstrated just how far from satire HIGNFY has strayed with his “Bomb Glastonbury and kill all Jeremy Corbyn supporters” joke in response to Joan Bakewell lying about Corbyn breaking the law - and, afterwards, Taylor was generally being a smug twat about it on his Twitter - which also serves to show how Tim Davie is fine with booking comedians whose acts have plenty of questionable content contained within it if it guarantees the Tories escape criticism
This month’s example of Steve Baker making himself a walking punchline with no self-awareness came from him howling that further lockdown measures would be a violation of terms set out by the European Convention on Human Rights - yes, the exact same convention that Baker has a.) Repeatedly accused of meddling with British affairs and is an example of the EU nanny state, and b.) Frowns upon things such as Steve Baker repeatedly voting against allowing child refugees to be reunited with their families
Nothing says “worker happiness” quite like GameStop running a competition for their stores to post Tik Tok dances where the store which is voted the winner receives prizes such as an Amazon Echo, a Visa gift card, and the privilege of working an additional ten hours during the week of Black Friday.  Wait, did I say “worker happiness”?  I meant to say “Dickensian shithousery” where employees are expected to compete so they can work more hours
Of course the “We’re not racist”s of Twitter had an issue with Sainsburys Christmas ad because it didn’t appeal to white men due to having a black family, in much the same way that Compare the Market’s ads don't appeal to white men as they’re not Russian meerkats
Professional victim Laurence Fox thought it would be a good idea to get into a slanging match with The Pogues while lying that Fairytale of New York would be banned from the airwaves.  It went about as well as could be expected
It wouldn’t be Remembrance Day without The Sun or The Daily Mail exploiting it for some obvious ragebait, and this year was no exception with both “papers” posting a photo of Extinction Rebellion posting with a banner in front of the Cenotaph protesting climate change - a photo taken two days earlier, but they held off on posting it until the day itself to get the rage flowing, because they needed something as neither Jeremy Corbyn nor Meghan Markle were within a mile of Whitehall
This month it was Ernest Cline who demonstrated a lack of understanding of the Streisand Effect by ordering DMCA takedowns on anyone who posted an excerpt of Ready Player Two online, which mainly served to help the internet realise which the actual excerpts were and which the parody versions were - because it was pretty hard to tell them apart otherwise...
“I’ve been silenced”, shrieked Suzanne Moore in an interview with the Telegraph, fatally undermining her argument in the process.  Funny how the people who have been “silenced” keep doing that, isn’t it?
Because we haven’t heard anything idiotic from Jake Paul in a while, Jake Paul decided to say Covid isn’t real and flu has killed just as many people.  So I give it a week before his older brother Logan feels he has to one-up this and say the Holocaust was fake...
And finally, not for much longer, is Donald Trump and his complicity in trying to organise a coup - but not a very good coup, as his minions at Fox News had to exaggerate how many people were actually protesting about him losing an election and crying about it - which was further undermined by his inability to tell Michigan and Minnesota apart

There are actually the entire case can be over quickly if you decide to accept the first provide you with the insurance adjuster make. Of course, this can mean settling to have an amount which is reduced than the true value of your own personal injury case and you may find your needs outweigh your compensation in the long term.
Medical Expenses
The insurer dealing with the defendant would like to visit your medical records both after and ahead of the accident before thy will anticipate to say yes to an agreement. They will likely want to make sure that each of the injuries and damages you are describing within the lawsuit are actually through the incident involved and were not conditions you had prior to the incident.
Insurance firms are really careful about their work and definitely will try to do just as much as they are able to to minimize the pay outs they can make for medical expenses. If they can prove that your injuries were not actually linked to the accident, they have no responsibility to deliver compensation for them.
In case the injuries are, undoubtedly, connected to the accident, they have got different ways to minimize the payouts they have to make. By way of example, they can say your injuries are certainly not as serious while you described them and definitely will only need moderate medical care to the not too distant future. Of course, this is simply not completed with your full recovery in your mind, but in the interests from the insurer.
These are generally just some of the most important reasons to experience a qualified injury law practice on your side to ensure every piece of information are properly included plus your case is bullet proof before entering negotiations.
Other Important Considerations

☠  —  don’t  open,  dead  inside  !  oh,  wait  !  that’s  just  victoria johnston,  you  know,  the  female  scout  in  the  mountaintop  community ?  she  is  twenty - five  years  old  and  looks  a  lot  like  lindsey morgan,  but  i  mostly  just  see  them  wielding  a  revolver.  now  that  you  mention  it,  i  don’t  think  i’ve  ever  seen  them  without  their  sketchpad.  which  makes  sense,  since  they  seem  to  remind  everyone  else  in  their  group  of  tattered sneakers, oversized jackets, and burnt cigarettes.  well,  hurry  up  and  let  them  in  !  we  can’t  leave  them  for  the  walkers  !  —  (  bellamy.  twenty-two.  est.  she & her.  )
Tumblr media
hello !   i’m bellamy and it’s been a hot minute since i was in a group  ( i tend to fade out of the group scene and then bounce back in for a bit ).  i’m an angst addict and i work as a caregiver for mentally disabled adults. i work a lot of different hours and i’m on at weird times. pls be my friend. anyway, tori  ( who does not like to be called victoria ) is my baby. made her a little over a year ago and she got put on the back burner, but she’s been completely reworked for this rp. pls love her. if you want to plot, like this or hmu.
notes
tori is a bit slow to open up, pretty snarky, and a little distrustful. she’s got a few walls that were mostly erected over the course of a rough adolescence. she’s also got a sense of humor that’s mostly sarcastic and tends to be more playful than anything with those she’s come to trust. she’s also very resourceful and quick on her feet.
this isn’t something that’s generally known, because she has a deep - rooted fear that if it becomes public knowledge, she’ll be removed from her role in the community and possibly left at the mercy of the outside world, but she would probably be considered medically fragile. chronic pain in her back due to a childhood injury,  in addition to this, she’s got a bad heart. her mother was told that it was likely to give out by the time she was twenty, but she’s twenty - five now and still going. her heart isn’t as weak as some, but it won’t tolerate overloads of stress. neither of these are things that she’s shared with her companions or with the doctors here, though she definitely should have.
bio
born in northern georgia, tori grew up in a family that was very poor, in no small part due to her mother’s drug use. she had a brother, nine years older than she, and a sister four years younger. her brother was her best friend, provider, and dearest companion throughout her life.
her father walked out around the time her sister was born. for most of her childhood, her mother’s addiction took her out of commission and her brother provided for the three of them as best he could, picking up little odd jobs here and there, stealing what he couldn’t buy for them. tori was a bright child, very resourceful, and by the time she was six, she was helping him out and stealing food for the youngest. when she was ten, her mother got clean and things got better little by little.
as a teenager, tori picked up an after - school job at a garage to put food on the table  ( and it was in the first few months here that she received her back injury ). her brother was long gone, having enlisted in the military, and while he did his best to help out where he could, her paychecks definitely helped out. she went full time at the garage when she graduated high school and put college on the back burner, telling herself that she’d go when her sister was able to get out of the house too.
when everything officially went to hell, tori went straight from the garage to her mother’s house. when she arrived, she found that her mother was acting strange, going after her sister. later, she would understand that she had turned already, that there had never been a chance of saving her, and she would bury that guilt deep in her heart so it couldn’t hurt her anymore. she broke into her brother’s gun cabinet and shot the thing that had been her mother in the back of the head.
it didn’t save her sister, who had been bitten by her mother. they didn’t know yet what the bite wound meant, and tori only wrapped it up as carefully as she could. they were only gong to stay in the house for the night, see what things looked like in the morning. her sister turned overnight, and tori was forced to put a bullet in her too. she wasn’t strong enough to get them both outside and bury them, so she burned them. seemed safer that way, anyway, now that the dead were rising. she hadn’t heard from her brother in a week when the shit hit the fan, and there was no way to contact him after. she has no idea what became of him.
she traveled alone for a while. survived as best she could, but she was relieved when she found the mountaintop community. she is immeasurably grateful that they took her in  --  she almost certainly wouldn’t have survived without them.
wanted connections
all of them tbh? friends. i would love for her to just have some Friends. or a love interest, tbh. would love to see her brother as well if anyone wants to make him.

"I know you think I'm crazy. Maybe that's because I am. About life, about this moment, about you." ― Crystal Woods
Tumblr media
“Fine as hell. She fine as hell. Hungry as hell, but fine as hell nonetheless.” I nearly choked as I dropped the po’ boy back onto the plate in front of me and stuck up my finger for both Odell and his iPhone camera to see. The crispy shrimp were flavored and fried to perfection, and Chef Pierre certainly didn’t hold back from piling them into the buttered toasted French roll. With the shrimp is shredded and lightly cooked crunchy cabbage, sliced tomatoes, and a drizzled remoulade sauce that nearly made me melt onto the floor.
It’s not even noon yet and I’m already eating a heavy ass lunch. Actually, I’ve been overindulging ever since we arrived here last night and have no intention on stopping until we’re back in the northeast. My stomach has morphed into a bottomless pit that is willing and ready to withhold any dish offered and the man who brought me here seems to want to do nothing more than leave me with a swiftly gained ten pounds lingering around my waistline and thighs.
“Now if I go home looking pregnant, don’t try to deny me because I’m absolutely going to blame it on you.” For breakfast, we indulged on freshly made beignets drenched in powdered sugar. While I had coffee, he settled for hot chocolate and we sat outdoors in the midst of the cool Baton Rouge air on a plush deep beige sectional on the back patio of the four-bedroom, six-bathroom contemporary highland home we’re residing in for the next two days.
With only our teeth brushed, we lazy lounged around in our nightclothes with nothing on our feet. Rather than the television being on, we used one another as sources of information and I was able to understand why Baton Rouge and New Orleans made and raised him. Though he spent some time living in both Georgia and Texas, Louisiana is home. He’s a 504 boy to the core.
“How they say that shit? Something about cushion for the pushing.” The silly little smirk dancing along his flawless lips was enough to make me launch my plastic fork in his direction. His mouth knows no boundaries sometimes.
“More cushion for the pushing? That?”
“Yeah, that baby. No complaints over here. I told you that you have to get the complete NOLA experience and food is a major part of that. I know you’ve been down here once before, but I know you ain’t eat like this.” I didn’t. Celeste’s selective eating limited everyone’s opportunity to explore the different spices and textures of New Orleans’ famous dishes and I mentally complained about it the entire time. The morning I wandered off to find coffee and breakfast while in the midst of a brutal hangover was the first and only time that I was able to have a dish that I felt was worth the trip and the irony in that is, it’s the same morning that I saw him.
“You’re still recording? I look crazy when I eat. Turn it off.” Like the professional athlete that he is, he was able to dodge my attempt to grab his phone out of his hands and he jogged to the opposite side of the cool grey marbled kitchen island. Its width kept him out of my reach.
“You fine though.”
“Turn it off.”
“Tell me I’m your favorite person ever first.”
“Get out of here.” I don’t have on make-up; not even a smidge of concealer. I know my eyes look like they’re shot to hell. I’m absolutely going to pay him back for this.
“Say it.”
“You’re my favorite person ever.”
“And that I’m the best boyfriend ever.” Boyfriend?
“Beckham.”
“Say it.”
“You’re my boyfriend?”
“I’d like to think so, but you tell me. Am I your boyfriend?”
Suddenly the delectable sandwich in front of me no longer mattered and neither did the fact that his camera was still creating a memory of my every reaction and response to his words.
I’ve been single for four years. Two years ago, I found myself in a silent embarrassment over the reality of it. I’m certainly within the years of my life where I’m supposed to be actively either anticipating or seeking out some sort of companionship and yet, I found a comfort zone in keeping that particular slate as clean as possible. Sure, my lower region suffered in a cry for pleasure that went beyond anything that I could do on my own, but there was a peace of mind that I clung to and could no longer sacrifice after Shamel begrudgingly sucked the life out of me.
I needed a decent amount of time to evaluate the failures of and within that relationship and to mentally regroup. The emotional turmoil took me to a dark place and men were not something I viewed in a positive light, so how could I ever accept one into my life? If anything, any man interested would have become a passionate punching bag; paying for the mistakes of the man prior to him.
Some months back, I don’t want to say that I gave up hope because I wasn’t hoping for anything in particular, but everything about being with someone felt completely irrelevant to the place that I’m at in my life. I closed the gap that I once had to nurture that particular type of connection while being in the midst of the height of my professional career. Despite the pressure from family, the distasteful questions about a husband and children I get when interviewed by other media outlets, and the ignorant talk about my fertility clock ticking away along with my childbearing years, none of it seemed to matter.
I found solace in the comfort of my home and couldn’t bear the thought of anything or anyone coming in to deliberately invade that space with their own desires, requirements, and opinions that I need to appease all for the sake of having them. I built a bubble around myself for self-preservation outside of my Edgewater personal space and like a vicious tornado, a Louisiana bred freak of nature athlete came blitzing into my life and overran every bubble, wall, and defense mechanism I spent a ridiculous amount of time perfectly creating. Like Ernes Kanter, I became a defensive liability to my damn self and I haven’t been able to block anything he’s ardently done or sent my way.
If anything, I’ve clung to every rush of excitement and the moments filled with wonder about just how much he’d impress me next. I’ve cherished feeling like a young school girl in Brooklyn blushing from across the room at the most mindless act my crush would do all for the sake of garnering the attention of others. I’ve found myself enthralled in a new world that interestingly intertwines with mine in a numinous beauty that I’ve never experienced before. It’s the first time I’ve ever undeniably wanted someone; flaws and all.
The unknown will always be fearsome but nothing amazing ever comes without either believing in what could possibly be a major failure or taking a risk that you’ve never taken before.
“I’d like to think so.” His naturally arched eyebrows arose in an elated surprise at the response he’d been given and he leaned his upper frame over the counter in a draw to be closer to me.
“So, say it.”
“You’re the best boyfriend ever.”
Our smirks were in unison as he leaned his torso over the island top in anticipation for me to do the same. He’d finally obliged me and stop recording, but not before getting my response about him being the best ever. Our lips softly met, sealing the deal we’d made in order for me to get what I wanted but most of all, because I’d given him what he wanted twice over. I nearly became unbalanced at the sudden rush of shudders fluttering through my frame in a raging response to him. To kiss him is to be inebriated in a manner that no man-made drug is capable of achieving. It’s a trip that I can’t get enough of and want to be stoned by endlessly.
“Now if Larenz Tate comes and tries to scoop me up, I might have to say things differently.” And with that he sucked his teeth.
“Man, forget you and your shrimpy ass breath.”
“As if your breath doesn’t smell the same way.”
“Come on and finish eating that. We’re going out.”
“In the daylight?” As my backside met the seat once again, both of his adorably almond shaped eyes lowered in confusion at the question. We’ve never gone anywhere in the daylight. Actually, we’ve never been anywhere together in the first place. It’s not realistic. Our nighttime meet ups at either his place or my place already come with risks that neither one of us are ready to explain if we’re caught beyond the few people on his end who do know that we spend time together. It’s not even a we factor; it’s all me. The consequences would be beyond anything he or I could explain.
“You trust me, right?”
“I do trust you.”
“Then you trust that I’ll protect you and that I do have your best interests in my mind and heart. So yeah, we’re going out in the daylight. I got us.”
“O, what are we doing?” It’s a question filled with so many wonders about who we are for one another and where we’re going with all of this. I’m not even ready to comprehend what we’ve done by adding titles into this mix.
“It won’t always be this way baby. Finish up. I’m going to get our jackets and your bag from upstairs.”
When I was left alone, I had one last bite of the sandwich and discarded the rest. If I eat another bite, the top button on my jeans will eventually pop off due to the pressure of my outlandishly full belly. I’m not eating another bite today. Nothing. If do have anything, it’ll be a salad for dinner. Maybe some fruit too, or yogurt. I don’t know. It’ll be something healthy. I’m not about to allow him to walk around flourishing with his washboard abs while I can barely contain a lower belly pudge. I’ve already slacked off with my gym attendance, so I at least need to be disciplined about what I’m putting in my mouth.
“This bag?” The black Alexander Wang bag he held up is one I’ve had for a while and it’s the one I take with me whenever I’m traveling everywhere. It has this versatility to be able to serve as a bag that I can randomly throw everything into and carry with me wherever, but it’s stylish enough to throw on for a nice afternoon outing with friends…or rather my man, this particular time.
“Yes, that one.” Although it’s in the lower seventies and certainly a comfortable enough temperature for me to be able to be outdoors with just this long-sleeved Thrasher shirt, he insisted on me wearing my leather jacket because the temperature’s going to drop at some point this evening. Even if it does, it’ll never feel like the freezing temperatures we deal with up North.
“Where are we going anyway?”
“The French Quarter.”
“Are we seeing someone there?” He’s spoken about more than enough people that he’s either related to or good friends with for there to be a reunion of more than fifty people back at the house if he made a couple of phone calls. Like most people do when they return home, I’m sure he’s going to want to make his rounds to show some love to those that he knows. If not everyone, then his parents and siblings. Maybe they’ll be at the game tonight.
“You’ll see. I think you’re going to like this.”
He offered nothing else as we slid into the backseat of the awaiting vehicle.
Tumblr media
Our arrival into the crown jewel of New Orleans didn’t go without the driver taking the scenic route and allowing me to marvel at the sights of the historic neighborhood. There’s something so chic about the vintage and antique restaurants and stores being perfectly blended in with the modernized boutiques. Everything about it is like a timeless portrait that you cannot stop analyzing.
The vibe is so unique and rich with culture. It’s almost unbelievable that people are actually from here. Just from looking around, it feels like a place that you’re only supposed to travel to and unreservedly experience so that you’ll have marvelous stories to go back home and tell your folks. It’s fitting for the handsomeness alongside me to be from here. Its vibrancy is everything that he is.
“What is this place?”
“Preservation Hall. We’re actually about three blocks away from the Mississippi River.” On the outside, the building blends in to the point of nearly being unremarkable. If I were randomly walking along the streets alone, I surely would have bypassed it without a thought or concern.
“Wow. This place is super old-fashioned.” Its interior is tatty and weathered but in a manner that makes it look like something out of a timepiece style of film. I’d say maybe as far back as the late 1700s or maybe the early eighteen. The portraits of musicians donning the walls and the instruments resting alongside the chairs on the opposite of the room is a dead giveaway of this being somewhere performances are put on.
“This place is legendary. It used to be a private residence in 1750 and then it turned into a tavern, an inn, a photography studio, and I think an art gallery as well. The doors were closed for a while after that and they reopened it in 1961 to serve as a sanctuary to preserve New Orleans jazz because the popularity of it pretty much died out when modernized jazz and rock and roll took over. So, this place is a safe haven where musicians and people gather to celebrate and remember the old New Orleans.”
I find it interesting that there’s no bar. I like the idea of people being completely sober while getting lost into the beauty of the music or maybe they all pile in after having gotten drunk elsewhere and spend their time cutting up on the tattered floors. There are only cushions on the floor and benches for people to sit on. I don’t even think there’s a bathroom. This little hole in a wall sanctuary is the embodiment of an intimate setting.
“What time do the doors open? What time does people usually come?”
“No one’s coming. I told you I got us.” He withdrew my jacket from my shoulders as older men began to trickle out of a backroom and make their way to their desire positions before us. “I told you I wanted you to experience the goodness of my home.”
“Odell, thanks for dropping by and bringing your little lady with you.”
“Aye, you know it ain’t nothing Charlie. Thanks for having us.”
“You know I’m Saints pride till the end, but I still root for you because you’re home grown pride. Get back strong, son.” He nodded in respect to the elderly man and saluted him for the post injury encouragement.
“Appreciate it. I’m working on it, sir.”
“Little lady, he told us to give you the soul of the city and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. You just sit back and enjoy. It’d be even nicer if you danced too.”
“I’m excited.” And I am.
The perks of my career have allowed to me walk along backstage areas to take in the intimate moments of some of the world’s most famous musicians and I’ve either stood in their designated V.I.P areas or in the sound booths to take in small or grand scale productions. I’ve witnessed some come ups too. I was in attendance at Drake’s first performance at New York’s famous S.O.B.s as he was buzzing on the heels of his So Far Gone mixtape.
I was there seven years ago to hear J. Cole perform cuts off of The Warm Up for his first ever performance. Friday Night Lights released November of the same year. I’ve seen Hov more times than I can count. The Watch the Throne Tour is still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Rihanna. Beyoncé. Celine Dion. Mary J. Blige. Outkast. There are too many to name. Last year, I saw and rocked out to the Bad Boy Reunion Tour twice and yet absolutely none of the performances I’ve seen over the years were quite like this.
The raw authenticity of the music filling the space felt like the jazz radiated right out of the depths of their bones as they played it with grit and pride. What started out as the shimmying of my shoulders and my hand slapping into my thigh, turned into me standing up on my heel clad feet and freely dancing around the room with my arms loosely swinging in the air to the medley of the trumpet while my hips grooved with the bass drum. My lover left the current dance crazes outside and instead opted to take ahold of my hips to be just as uninhibited as I felt, as he twirled me around and laughed at the dizziness, we danced ourselves into.
If the hall had been filled with patrons, it wouldn’t have mattered. I could only bask in him and the captivating aura radiating from his striking frame. My own roared in a yearning for him to do things to my body that no other man has ever done before. My inner thighs tingled in a call for his fingers to graze them. My seeping center throbbed in a plea to be filled with the company of him. The electrifying turned sensual jazz told the narrative of my body and I can only hope he’ll analyze and immerse himself inside of my story soon enough.
“After that, you gotta eat some crawfish.”
“If you feed me one more time….” We worked up enough of a sweat to need the air conditioning turned on the coolest setting in the SUV. Though I danced off the breakfast and early lunch we had, I don’t need anything else right now.
“You’re definitely eating some tomorrow. You’re not getting out of that.”
“Those things are ugly.”
“So are shrimp and fish, but you eat it.”
“No, crawfish are uglier.”
“Uglier than shrimp with the heads on them? You lying your ass off. Now those shits are ugly. We’re going to have a boil right outside by the pool tomorrow. It’s already in the works. You gon’ love it, watch.” I readjusted the Off-White cap I randomly picked up from the numerous accessories he had laying on the dresser and rolled my eyes.
“I’ll try one.”
“And then you’ll try another and another and next thing you know, you’ll be sitting right beside me going in. I’m not even worried about it.” And he isn’t. He’s been assured in me loving the renowned NOLA boil since he first spoke about it a while back.
“Is this Newman?”
“Yeah, baby.” I don’t know if it’s just me, but his accent seemed to instantly thicken as soon as we’ve stepped off of the plane and it’s been an oxymoron of pleasuring torture ever since. “Baby” seems to be sticking as my pet name, but it’s the manner in which he says it that melts every part of me.
Once the vehicle came to a halt, we were out within minutes and making our way to the football field that birthed what would be the beginning of his legendary football legacy in Louisiana. In the research I did on him prior to the rant, I learned of just how well he had done for himself here. He was a three-year starter and was awarded the titles of All-District, All-Metro, and All-State twice. In 2010, he was named District Offensive MVP, AA State Offensive MVP, and was both the offensive and team MVP for the Newman football team. He also played in the All-American Bowl in January of the following year at the invitation of the United States Army. His college recruitment had been over a two-year campaign and he had full ride scholarship offers from twenty different colleges. Miami and LSU were his top choices and we’re all well aware of the home pride choice that he made when it was all said and done.
“The alma mater of both you and Eli.”
“Yeah, his brothers too. They all wore the number eighteen. Cooper’s kids are students here now.”
As his eyes panned around the field, I observed him quietly reliving the nostalgia of his time here. The entire coaching staff has raved about him every chance they’ve been given to do so. It’s always a comical time whenever the Giants play the Saints because as much as people want the Saints to take the victory, they’re just as excited and looking forward to seeing him get out there and put on one hell of a performance.
“Nelson Stewart said that you were the most hardworking and explosive player that he’s ever coached. He called you the popular guy because people loved t0 be around you and also said that your energy rubbed off on your teammates.”
“Coach Stewart is one of my favorite people in general. He’s always been a stand-up guy and still looks out for me till this day. He’s sometimes a voice a reason for me whenever I’ve had an off game or a poor judgement call in sideline behavior.”
“It’s one thing that he said that was interesting to me and now that I’ve gotten to know you, I understand it so much more and know it to be true. He said that you don’t like the spotlight.” He doesn’t. All he has is a passion for winning. He’s not the guy that feels like the game winning play needs to run through him. He’s not watching the stats and obsessed with making sure his outshines anyone else in the league.
He’s not the guy who arrogantly talks down on teammates and opponents during press conferences or post-game interviews. He’d rather just win with his team while being allowed to be himself in the midst of it. It’s easier said than done, though. None of that stops him from being viewed as the most polarizing player in the NFL.
“I don’t. I just want to win. That’s why I play. I play for the love of it and to win championships. The additional accolades are cool, but I’m not really chasing any of that. I don’t need a bunch of ESPYs or MVP awards. If they think I deserve them then that’s fine, but I’m focused on nothing more than earning those Vince Lombardi trophies.”
“Can I ask you something? I don’t want you to think I’m turning on my journalist cap or anything like that, though.” He lightly snickered and used his large palm to grip my thigh in encouragement to proceed. As we sat in the bleachers, a custodian walked along the field tending to the grass. His age was a clear sign that he didn’t care too much about who either of us are or what we’re doing here.
“You can ask me anything.”
“Is that something you miss about your days here? The lack of a spotlight?”
“For sure. When you’re entering the draft, there this surreal excitement about the possibility to go pro. You don’t think about or care about everything that it entails before you get there. The goal is just to get there. Now that I’m there, I know now more than ever how much of a business it is. Sometimes it feels like it’s more about the business side of things than the sport itself. That can be frustrating. Then there’s the media and you know that I don’t have the best relationship with that side, no matter how much I try to keep my composure when I’m asked antagonizing questions or having the past thrown in my face even if the moment doesn’t call for it. It’s why I view you and a few others as a breath of fresh air. You don’t do that.”
“Journalism and the media itself have shifted due to the internet. Clickbait now holds a major importance in the way that the information gets out there. I hate it, believe me. Going viral is a thing now. The internet rehashes shit, daily. Social media journalism is the worst of the worst because nine times out of ten, it’s bullshit and it circulates faster than the truth does. I just try to put myself into the shoes of others and I know that I wouldn’t want to be misunderstood or deliberately have my genuine emotions ignored all for the sake of entertaining others. Regardless of the perks and millions that comes with being a professional athlete; you all are human beings. I think a lot of people look at the luxuries of your lives and have this unfair viewpoint that you don’t deserved to be humanized.”
“I think so too. It’s super crazy to hear people say things like I’m entitled or how they have the right to rip me to shreds because they’re season ticket holders or some shit. I don’t want to sound ungrateful because I’m not. My family is well taken care of because of the fans. I get to utilize what I was born to do because of them. I have to give them some credit for you coming into my life as well. So, I’m grateful, thankful, humbled. All of that. I just want to feel a bit more carefree again.”
“I get it. That’s fair and deserved.”
“You always get it. That’s why everyone in the sports world loves you. They gon’ have to fall back though.” His facial expression is what sparked my laughter. It was quite playful but his tone was not. Though it flatters me that I’m beloved amongst those that I report on day after day, I don’t take anything beyond professional talk seriously. The flirting doesn’t mean much of anything to me because men will be men. Luckily, nothing has been said or done that falls along the lines of sexual harassment. God willing, it’ll remain that way.
“Let me ask you this though. Did you start running through girls here or at LSU?” It was his turn to laugh and he did so with the typical male reaction when they’re getting ready to lie or downplay their behavior; with widen eyes and his head jerked back.
“Running through girls? I never ran through girls.”
“My mental lie detector test is going nuts right now.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I really didn’t run through girls like you think I did.”
“Pretty boy athlete? Yeah fucking right.”
“Pretty boy? Oh, so you think I’m cute?” The silly little smirk on his gorgeous face prompted me to roll my eyes.
“Don’t switch the subject.”
“I really wasn’t bad as you think I was. I had fun but it wasn’t that much fun. I didn’t want too much of that distracting me from my long-term goals.”
“Oh, so you waited until you were in the NFL to do it?”
“What? No.” Why do people laugh when they lie? At this point, I can’t even refrain some laughing.
“Yeah, okay. I will say, you do stay pretty lowkey with your shit. You’re not as caught out there like a lot of the other ones.”
“I’m not that bad. I promise I’m not. I guess I can see why it would seem like I am, but I wouldn’t really say that I’ve been out here tossing myself around heavily. I haven’t committed myself to anyone in quite some time though, so that’s left the window open for flings and some meaningless sex from time to time, but there is no crazy number for me to tell or brag about.”
“What if I want to know the number?”
“I’d tell you. You want to know?” Yet again, his hand squeezed my thigh and he followed with a caress to soothe what didn’t cause me any discomfort in the first place.
“No.” His past is his past. What is knowing that number supposed to do for me at this point? What is it supposed to mean?
“It’s been a minute for me in that particular area, though. I’m talking about maybe since late spring.” Late spring? Okay, I definitely wasn’t expecting to hear that.
“It’s been a minute for me too.”
“How long of a minute if you don’t mind me asking?” And this is where the embarrassment comes in. I usually do my best to avoid admitting this because it turns an unnecessarily amount of attention on me and then comes the snide and sometimes condescending pity that I don’t need.
“It’s been four years since I’ve been with a man in any type of way; romantically and sexually.” Silence took over. When his eyes washed over me, there was no pity within them but rather an innocent curiosity. He wasn’t sure if he should proceed or not.
“Did he hurt you badly?”
“I don’t really look at it as hurt. I didn’t love him enough for that. I wanted to though and I tried to. More than anything, he tried to break me down from the inside out and there were parts of me that fed into it. Then there was the resistant side of me that fought back and it turned the time that I was with him into pure exhaustion mentally and even physically. He was draining.” If anything, I’ve gotten spoiled with how normal things have been within my home. I regretted when I allowed him to move in with me just two days later and that feeling never left. My posh little apartment turned into my personal hell. I dreaded being and sleeping there.
“When did you decide to leave?”
“All of our fights were verbal, but they were vicious. I knew at some point they were going to become physical and that I needed to get out there. He never really had a possessive and obsessive state of mind for the most part. We broke up to make up plenty of times. There just came a point when I was like fuck this, I’m over this shit and I’m never looking back. I know this is going to sound so doormat like, but I hoped that he was cheating on me. I had my suspicions that he was anyway but I never really went seeking. I wanted him to have fallen for someone else, so he wouldn’t give a shit about me telling him it’s over and putting his ass out of my apartment. He didn’t leave without a fight but he left. There were those few calls for forgiveness but he eventually stopped.” And I changed the locks, so that he couldn’t pop up on me since I never asked for my keys back.
“How did you two meet?”
“Through Celeste. I needed a new physical trainer and she raved about him. She had been working out at the gym he owns for quite some time and she swore up and down he was the perfect guy for me. To appease her, I didn’t resist her matchmaking bullshit.” And I should have because every guy she tries to send my way usually has something about him that doesn’t mesh well with my personality. Her desperation to be able to take the credit for having found my life partner is so damn maddening.
“So, did you make the choice not to date or no one caught your interest?”
“A bit of both. Initially, I need a break from it. After that break, it was a whatever type of thing. As you said, no one drew my interest. So, it just became me and Bob.”
“Who is Bob?” His frown of confusion caused me to raw in laughter. “You don’t have any pets.”
I do have pets. Eris and Mowgli are my babies. He just doesn’t know it yet.
“Bob is in my nightstand draw. It’s all black and has five different vibrating settings on it.”
That’s something that I only share when I’ve had a few drinks in me and my initiate life is in the middle of the floor for discussion. I don’t know where I found the comfort to blurt that out to him so comfortably but now that I have, not only is it hilarious but it’s nice to know how comfortable I’ve become with him. In the midst of what we’re building together despite any hesitance I’ve had, he’s genuinely my homie just as much.
“That’s interesting.” His eyes were still widened and his mouth was still slightly agape at the revelation. I know married women who still partake in self pleasure, so he’s not even about to burst my bubble over me making sure I’m handling the urges I do have.
“Uhm.” With another squeeze of my thigh, he normalized his face and stood to his feet. As his hand met the back of his neck, our eyes met and we instantly laughed at the flustered facial expression he wore. I didn’t intend to evoke that out of him, but it’s hilarious to see it.
“We have to get back to change for the game.”
“Change? What’s wrong with what I have on?”
“You’re not decked out in LSU colors, that’s what’s wrong.”
“Oh gosh. I am an NYU Violet. No Tigers gear for me.”
“An NYU what? NYU isn’t known for shit other than academics.”
“Excuse me? I’ll have you know that our fencing team is division one and has won thirty national championships.”
That may have been the funniest statement I’ve ever said to him. He laughed the entire walk back to the car and just about halfway back to the house. He even took it upon himself to make matters worse by Googling my alma mater’s sports history and rubbing in my face just how terrible all but the men’s cross country and women’s golf team is. Both our women’s and men’s fencing teams haven’t won titles since the seventies. What was I thinking bringing that up?
Because his laughter is so loveable, I even embarrassingly mentioned how I once considered joining the fencing team even though I didn’t have a lick of experience. That revelation was what brought the tears to his eyes. I’m pretty damn athletic. Well, I used to be. I would have picked up the basics quite easily. Mastered it? Now, I don’t know about that.
Tumblr media
There was no way I’d be able to be along the sidelines with him nor would I be able to discreetly sit among the thousands of spectators celebrating their state team, so he set it up for me to enjoy the game in a Tiger Den Suite. I mentally prepared myself to be alone in here, but that wasn’t the case when I stepped inside. Instead, I was left to enjoy the company of mother and his three siblings.
The same Air Force 1 collaboration he gifted to the entire team, were donning all of our feet and his as well; well one of them. In the pictures that we took before he left out to go and stir up the crowd with his presence, we looked like a corny high school couple who deliberately matched our attire so that people would know we were together. While the photos will be nothing we can ever share, they’ll serve as nice keepsakes to be able to look back on at some point down the line.
In being here with his family, it’s a small reminder of the things that I’ve missed from my own. The manner in which Heather supports her children’s every endeavor is commendable. He no longer plays for this team and yet she’s still here dressed in their colors with his name running across the top of her back in pride for the legacy her oldest child left out there on the team’s home field. I’m willing to bet no matter what profession he chose for his life; she’d be just as prideful about it.
I’m not sure what my mother wants from me. I can’t even begin to pinpoint what I can do to make her proud and I’ve grown tired of trying to figure out what it could be beyond allowing her to control my decisions. She’s expressed that I should already know that she’s proud and if she weren’t, I’d surely hear it about it. I’d like her actions to match that. Whether she’s interested in what I like or not, it’s about the sacrifice for the sake of showing your children that they’re supported. If I’m blessed with kids, I intend to do that to the fullest extent.
“You and my brother are cute.”
“Huh?” I nearly choked on the half and half iced tea and lemonade I’ve been drinking. My eyes shifted over in Jasmyne’s direction. Though Sonny isn’t biologically her brother, it doesn’t stop her from treating him as if he is. He’s been on her lap the entire time we’ve been here.
“You two are cute.”
“Are we?” I asked such a dumbass question because I truly don’t know what to say. Do I confirm it? Do I deny him and downplay it all? How can I?
“Yeah. I can’t believe you like him. You’re so cool and my brother is not. Mom and I still don’t know how he pulled it off.” Our giggles were low and yet infectious. Her words were spoken like a true younger sibling. Both she and Kordell have no issue with teasing him and purposefully ganging up on him together. At some point, they’re going to teach Sonny, who views O as the best thing since sliced bread, to do the same thing.
“You two are hilarious.”
“If only I can tell my friends that he’s taken. I’d love to see the disappointment on their faces but most of all, it’ll make them stop talking about him. It’s so annoying.”
“Jazzy, you can’t…”
“I know, I know.” She cut me off. “I wouldn’t do that. He already spoke to me about it. Even if I could, I wouldn’t. I don’t tell his business.” And here he and I are, putting people into positions to keep the secrecy of our connection secure. They’ll have to watch what they do and say in front of others for the sake of protecting something that they’re not technically apart of. It’s not fair when you really take a step back and think about it.
“He spoke to you?”
“Yeah, to all of us. He just said that you guys want to be private.” He made it sound so simple.
“But you know that you can reach out to me at any time for anything, right?”
“I can?” In an instant, her eyes lit up.
“Of course. Call or text me whenever.”
“Will do.”
Though I wasn’t alongside him, I could see and even feel the joy radiating from Beckham’s body as he engaged the crowd from the sidelines of the field. He hails Death Valley as the greatest place he’s ever played the game of football in and it shows tonight. Even with the medical boot on his foot, he’s been in and out of the crowd, dancing along to the sound of the band and taking selfies in different sections filled with students. He’d even gotten the band to perform a song and chant that’s been banned from all collegiate sporting events as his mother explained it. I’m sure whatever disciplinary actions or fine that are to follow due to his request will be properly paid for. It’s the least he can do.
Tumblr media
“So, what did you think?”
The city became ours. Inside of a blacked-out BMW with a playlist filled with songs R&B songs that were birthed in the nineties, we cruised the streets of the now simmered down city after a victorious win in Tiger Stadium.
“I see what you mean when you mention the energy being unmatched. There’s something different about it. I’m not sure what it is, but I get it.”
“I feel like the energy in Death Valley still surpasses any Saints game at the Superdome.”
“You’re biased.”
“So, what.”
“I’m not knocking it country boy. You can be biased.”
“Country boy? Oh, you got jokes Brooklyn girl? Or should I call you B? Son?”
“I love your accent though, it’s super cute.” He sucked his teeth at my teasing.
“You sounding super tough like Remy Ma is cute too.”
“First of all, Remy’s from Castle Hill. That’s in the Bronx. I’m from Brooklyn. Get that shit right, don’t be disrespectful.”
“See? Aggressive.”
“Shut up!” We both were amused. I don’t know why people think New Yorkers sound aggressive. It’s not even that. We don’t have time for the bullshit and our tones will let you know. That’s all.
“What’s this, your get laid playlist?” Ginuwine’s “Stingy” had been playing for a little under a minute and I’ve been fighting all of my urges to sing along to it. If I were in my car, I would have been having my own karaoke session going on.
“Nah. I usually have on trap music to get me amped up before the games but after them, I’ll throw on things that are more mellow. So, this is my chilling out playlist. Why? You don’t like it?”
“I love it.”
As soon as he brought the car to a full stop at a red light, he removed his seatbelt and leaned over to intertwine our lips. His addicting taste ignited the rage of fluttering that awakens within my core any time a part of him touches me. The grip his hand held on my inner thigh only further pre-worsened whatever salacious dream that I am sure to have when I close my eyes tonight or rather, this morning.
“Don’t start nothing you can’t finish.” My warning sounded foolish. If anything, I should be telling myself that.
“I’ll make you throw that Bob shit out. Try me.” His minty breath slithered up my nose as his lips wrapped around my bottom one. The seat of my panties dampened in an instant.
Shit.

WU Reviews: Mindhunter Season 2 Episodes 3 & 4 reviewed by Ariana Zarate '11 (@arianazarate89) and Leah Way '13 (@leahway)
Ariana and Leah have combined forces to give WU readers an in-depth review of Mindhunter Season 2, which you can now binge watch on Netflix. If you want to watch the show and then read their recaps, we are posting episode-by-episode reviews on WU. This show is creepy and disturbing, so be forewarned that they may spoil some weird moments for you. But if that’s your thing, dive into the bizarre and wonderful world of Mindhunter!
Episode 3
While Season 1 centered more around Ford and his life away from work, Season 2 is devoted more to Tench and Dr. Wendy Carr (the third member of their taskforce). At the end of Episode 2, we learn that there was a body found at one of Tench’s wife’s real estate listings. Nancy, Tench’s wife, is completely devastated and falls into a panic. We learn that the murder is a particularly disturbing one - a toddler was found tied to a cross, dead.
Meanwhile in Atlanta, Georgia, Ford is meeting up with Agent Jim Barney to interview two convicted killers: William “Junior” Pierce and William Henry Hance. What follows next during these two interviews is a humbling experience for Ford, who is so used to being able to seamlessly get into his subjects’ heads. Ford’s interrogation techniques are highly intellectual - Pierce and Hance are not. Ford’s usual techniques prove ineffective. Barney saves the day by realizing an overtly intellectual, jargon-laden approach isn’t going to work. Interviews done, Ford checks into his hotel and meets Tanya, which sets off the chain of events for Season 2. Tanya learns Ford is an FBI agent and immediately offers to escort him to his room. Clearly with something on her mind, she leaves only to come back and invite Ford to the best meal in Atlanta. Ford, thinking he was just asked out on a date, quickly showers and freshens up, eager for the date. Much to his surprise, she takes him to a closed restaurant to meet four mothers whose boys have gone missing or have been killed. She begs him to help but the mothers are unimpressed with his age and are jaded about the police or the FBI being able to help. Ford promises to help as much as possible, not yet realizing just how hard it will actually be. Ford and Barney talk to some members of law enforcement familiar with the string of kidnappings and murders but they are unhelpful, saying that Atlanta simply has a high murder rate so nothing is really out of the ordinary and that the real perpetrator is poverty. Soon it is time for Ford to return to Quantico. Dr. Carr has an eye for bartender Kay and she asks her out, in an awkward manner but hey, it was the 80’s and it was hard for gay folks. Get it Wendy! Meanwhile the BTK is somehow confident enough to be sketching women in bondage in public IN THE LIBRARY with headphones on. Like man, you’re just asking to get caught - do that shit in private or I don’t know, maybe leave the headphones off so you can hear people approaching.
Episode 4
The Atlanta Child Murders have taken a hold of Ford and he tries to persuade the taskforce to make this their next case, putting off their scheduled interviews. None of the team is on-board but new Assistant Director Ted Gunn, who is looking for a way to make this taskforce cutting-edge, is very much interested. A recent report that a child was kidnapped and taken across state lines gives them the excuse to involve the FBI so Gunn sends Ford and Tench to Atlanta, much to Dr. Carr’s chagrin. A frustrated Agent Smith (the fourth and last member of the behavioral taskforce, shunned by the team after he reveals unedited audio to FBI leadership behind everyone’s backs) tells Dr. Carr they should do the interviews themselves. After all, he says, they were the ones that did the background research on the interviewees. Dr.Carr agrees. The interview with Dr. Carr, Smith, and Elmer Wayne Henley, Jr. is one of our favorite scenes. It is painful for Smith but a laugh for the audience. Clearly Smith is the guy whose experience exclusively comes from books and papers - this serves him none when face-to-face with a convicted killer. Henley dances circles around the ill-prepared Smith while Dr. Carr side-eyes the whole time before finally taking the reins of the interview. She opts to go off-script…the very tactic she criticized Ford for using. Dr. Carr loosens Henley’s lips by telling her own similar story where she was in a submissive/dominant relationship with an older woman she later left because she was too controlling.
And can we just all take a moment of silence for the oblivious Smith, who later asks Dr. Carr how she was able to “make up” a story on the fly to relate to Henley. Dr. Carr does not respond. Boy is clueless. #haroldtheyarelesbians
Speaking of gay things - Dr.Carr and Kay go to a bowling alley for their date. Immediately, the contrast is visible in how they dress. Dr. Carr is in a stiff pencil skirt, pretty much what she wears for work every day and, based on what we see the rest of the season, possibly the only type of clothing she owns. Kay is in tight jeans and a t-shirt/vest combo, the uniform of lesbians everywhere. The date goes well but things get tricky when Wendy trips over her words and insinuates that Kay’s job as a bartender is only a temporary thing and she might want to do something “better”. Regardless, Kay is understanding, and they have a fine rest of the night. Meanwhile in Atlanta, Ford is also tripping up with racial relations. Boy genius tells the Atlanta Commissioner (a Black man) that the perpetrator they are looking for for the murder of Black boys is a Black man. Looking at the Commissioner’s face, it is obvious that this is exactly what he did NOT want to hear. The Black community is pointing fingers at the KKK and extremists, which certainly makes sense, but Ford is myopically focused on following the young data that shows serial killers tend to stay within their own race. Due to Ford’s faux pas, the Commissioner declares the kidnapping a hoax, thus nullifying the FBI’s need to be involved. He sends Ford packing back to Quantico.
Tench, back in Virginia early after having been summoned by a frantic Nancy, is about to hear a bombshell. Nancy reveals that their adopted son, Brian (who might have autism but is unconfirmed in the show), confessed to being inside the house at the time of the murder. And what’s more, putting the body on the cross was his idea. Unfortunately, the confession came out when the agent was present, so… yeah it’s gonna be a tough season for the Tench family and the family of the deceased toddler.
