Okay, there's a lot to unpack here, but let's start with the premise: that the housing shortage is due to rental properties. Which. Unless you're talking about short-term rentals like Airbnb, that's not going to reduce housing. Housing shortages look at both rental and retail properties on the market compared to the number of people looking. It doesn't matter if someone is looking for a property to buy and there are only rental properties available. I do agree short term rentals are a problem; I remember when airbnb meant renting a room in someone's house or a tiny house on the property.

Now, let's talk about landlords. The majority of landlords are not the kinds you'd find in NYC or LA, and definitely not in Idaho, where the largest city is less than 250k and the second biggest city is 70k. 50% of landlords in the US are single-unit owners. They are regular people who paid off their "starter home" and now rent it while living in a bigger house in the same city. 80% of landlords have fewer than 10 units, and only 6% of landlords own more than 100 units. That 6% should rightly be called corporate landlords, and are almost exclusively owned by blackrock, which is a federally-backed corporation deemed "too big to fail." They purchase properties at rates higher than private citizens can afford because of that federal backing.

Now, this is important because the lack of available land means that the land which is for sale is insanely priced. In Idaho — which is my home state and the one I'm most familiar with — land goes for as much as 50k for a tenth of an acre, completely bare. You can't put a house on that for less than 100k, so a small starter home would cost $150,000 to build. The only people who can afford to increase the available housing are corporations, not private citizens. So not only is the federal land ownership a problem because there just aren't enough houses, the only people who can afford to make new housing are the exact people you imply you despise!

Now, let's talk about "public lands" you discussed. Why the hell is the federal government administering tribal lands??? Those lands should be owned and administered by the tribes or by individual Amerindians. The BIA routinely abuses the people by administering their lands the way they do. On many reservations, the federal government won't permit grocery stores to be built. I know a woman who has land in trust, some 30 acres, but because the federal government has cut deals with the (corporate) ranchers who rent her property, and the excessive administrative costs, she receives only $0.17 a month for it. Seventeen cents a month. Give the tribal lands back to the tribes!

Now, national parks are something I am fully on board with. I love them, and have visited not only national parks, but many units within the NPS. Idaho has no national parks, and the majority of the NPS units within its borders are actually within state parks themselves, such as Craters of the Moon being within the samely-named state park, and Hagerman Fossil Beds being within Thousand Springs SP. The units are basically administered by Idaho, not the federal government. The rest of six hundred million acres are owned by the BLM, the Forest Service, and Fish and Wildlife. We aren't allowed to use them to benefit the public. Almost all of them are inaccessible because roads are not allowed to be built. We lose hot springs to rock slides and erosion because we're not allowed to develop them. Idaho has a water shortage because we're not allowed to use water from much of the federal land.

And don't tell me it's for public use if you've never even been to the land you're shouting about preserving for the public. Most people couldn't point out Idaho on a map, let alone tell the difference between Saint Joe NF and Coeur d'Alene NF. You aren't impacted by the "public lands" you swear you don't want to lose. You've never thought of them before now, and if a time traveler made it so they'd never been bought by the federal government, your life wouldn't change at all — except, maybe, cool gemstones like pink opals and star garnets would be more accessible and ethically mined.

As he struggles to resist the urge to swear, Boromir instead grinds his teeth together and steadies himself against the wall with a fisted hand. He doesn't notice his brother, so caught up in thought, until he notices he's been called upon.

"What ails you, Faramir?" he asks, for he remembers that Faramir had a long day ahead of him as well. To push his own troubles onto him now would be selfish, yet... "I've seen that look on your face before."

Ann can't help but laugh as she sees the boy with the yellow scarf - and there's no nice way to say this - get rejected by the girl he was flirting with outright, even if it was in as gentle a manner as it could've been. As soon as she does, she feels a little guilty - it wasn't unkind or intended as mocking, but she couldn't help it - it's rare that she ever hears pickup lines that are that bad spoken with such confidence anymore! Judging by the look on the boy's face, he's not used to being let down, either.

"Better luck next time, I guess?" she finds herself saying once the girl is gone, and it's a surprise to even Ann herself that she spoke up at all. Maybe it's because something in her - call it intuition - tells her that the boy was completely sincere in his compliments, as clearly intentionally targeted as they may have been.

"Sorry - that was a bit harsh. On Valentine's Day, too... But I'm sure you'll find someone who appreciates you eventually!"
