“[Smolensk’s] aviation plant is involved in the production and modernization of the Su-25 military aircraft.” ~ Andrii Kovalenko, the counter-disinformation chief at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council 🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . A Ukrainian drone attack targeted the Smolensk Aviation Plant in western Russia overnight on Jan. 21, starting a fire at the facility, the independent news channel Astra reported.
Russian authorities confirmed a drone attack against Smolensk Oblast but made no mention of the plant. According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, Russian air defenses intercepted 55 drones overnight, including 10 in Smolensk Oblast.
“Fallen drone debris caused fires on the ground and on the roofs. Windows of residential buildings were also damaged,” Governor Vasily Anokhin said on his Telegram channel. The governor also warned against alleged “fake information and videos” appearing on social media regarding the drone attack.
At least two high-rise residential buildings were damaged as a result of the attack, the Russian Telegram channel Shot claimed. No casualties were reported.
The Ukrainian military did not comment on the claims, which could not be independently verified.
Smolensk lies less than 60 kilometers (around 35 miles) east of the Russia-Belarus border and some 270 kilometers (170 miles) north of Ukraine. The city’s aviation plant is involved in the production and modernization of the Su-25 military aircraft, said Andrii Kovalenko, the counter-disinformation chief at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.
The same night, an oil depot in the village of Lisky in Voronezh Oblast caught fire due to fallen drone debris, Governor Alexander Gusev said. Ukrainian drones previously attacked the facility on Jan. 16.
Ukrainian long-range drones regularly target Russian military and industrial facilities to undermine Moscow’s ability to wage its full-scale war in Ukraine.

“The refinery plays a key role in providing fuel to the Russian military. Taking out refineries and oil depots directly affects Russia’s ability to wage an intensive war.” ~ Andrii Kovalenko, Head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation 🇺🇦👏💙💛🙏🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . A Ukrainian drone hit the Taneko oil refinery in Tatarstan, Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported on Jan. 11.
The refinery is one of the country’s largest oil-processing facilities.
Workers at the refinery in Nizhnekamsk were evacuated amid the attack, and local footage showed smoke rising from the site.
Andrii Kovalenko, Head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, confirmed the strike, and emphasized its strategic importance.
“The refinery plays a key role in providing fuel to the Russian military. Taking out refineries and oil depots directly affects Russia’s ability to wage an intensive war,” he said.
The refinery, which processes over 16 million tons of oil annually, was previously targeted in a drone attack in spring 2024, causing damage to its primary processing unit.
Taneko refinery is located in the city of Nizhnekamsk, around 1,300 kilometers from the country’s border with Ukraine.

“Russia has transferred around 50,000 soldiers from other sectors of the front to Kursk Oblast, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Oct. 10.” ~ @kyivindependent_official 🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost . . . Russian forces launched a new counterattack against Ukraine’s left flank in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, several Russian and Ukrainian Telegram channels claimed on Oct. 10.
A Ukrainian official commented that the “Russian plan in Kursk Oblast has been thwarted so far” as Russian forces suffered losses.
Ukraine launched its cross-border incursion into Kursk Oblast in early August, claiming to initially seize some 1,300 square kilometers (500 square miles) but recently facing mounting pressure from growing Russian reinforcements.
“No details yet, but the Russian military suffered significant losses in equipment,” said Andrii Kovalenko, the head of the counter-disinformation department at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.
