Reposting my works here, day 4

My main comic (Windwood Syndrome) has a canonical post-canon now.

In it, 200 years after, a technologically advanced space alien alliance called Collector-Star discovered a humanoid civilisation, the only one after Earth - a planet Ixhio.

It was a great breakthrough, because it was a different galaxy, a different planet, no traces of any possible way their evolution can be connected - and yet, here's a coincidence of galactic scale.

Another galaxy with only one inhabited planet, and creatures on it that live a lot like modern day humans. Of course, they have rings in the sky, hooves on their legs and no social concept of gender, but also they have vocal languages, call their planet Dirt, or sometimes Stone, or Island, they have social media and smartphones, science fiction, pet animals, meat and veganism, literature and poetry, breathe air and love flowers, have toxic beauty standards and watch cartoons and have ecological problems and world hunger that many of them choose to ignore.

Collector-Star is a part of multiple species and civilizations all of which came from one 40000 years ago. The only other sentient species they discovered, not related in any way, was Earth.

After it, they found a few non-related sentient species and non-sentient life. None of them were humanoid.

They themselves were originally inhabitants of space, looking like saucers with tentacles, unable to see or hear. They discovered a sentient cosmic goo, a sentient planet, a hierarchical squid hiveminds, etc.

Ixhio was the first planet which was really like Earth.

Its inhabitants look like the 3rd picture (usually not as skinny), and their planet is visible in the lower right corner of the second picture, with a ring.

The Jessica station, the structure from the second picture, was sent to that region of space to study the Ixhians and determine the best moment for contact.

Jessica herself, as a human, is depicted in the last picture. The station isn't named after her, the station is her.

As with all the technology of Collector-Star, it's hard to draw a line between a person and a tool, and instead of treating people as tools, they treat tools as people.

They consider unethical to create something so complex that it may turn out sentient to use it as a tool. So they make tools as extensions of themselves or transform themselves into tools. All of this is completely reversible and controllable. Actually, no one in Collector-Star has permanent form - unless they want to.

Jessica, a character from Windwood Syndrome, was human, but later she became a part of Collector-Star and then a space station. She still has human-like units on the station herself and enjoys human-like interaction with other humanoids and human-like units.

The first drawing is a doctor from the Jessica station, o-Arvo Kshasu.

She is an ehhah, an artificial species unethically created by members of Collector-Star a thousand years ago. Her world, Kref, was in captivity of its creators almost all its existence, with its scientific and cultural progress stunted. Her people along with other species from her planet broke free fairly recently, about 2 centuries ago.

This species isn't only in my post-canon, but in pre-canon also. My first coherent work (sadly, unfinished) in this universe was about Kref, and the main character was a human in a body of an ehhah. This happened with her and a bunch of other humans as a side effect of an attempt of Kref's inhabitants to escape from Kref by possessing human bodies, after they discovered humans, who were telepathically available to them. This story even was called, "escape to humanity". One of other main characters of this story was the main reason of the plot of Windwood Syndrome even happening.

I feel like we don't really talk about Thomas Midgely Jr.

The man who is single-handedly responsible for creating the 2 most destructive chemicals of the 20 century. Chemicals that should have never been created.

So I am here to change that.

While Thomas Midgely died in November 1944. At the time of his death, the public sang his praises and his contributions to the automobile industry and coolant industries. Today, however, he is effectively canceled. If you ever Google him you won't find any positive on him.

Thomas started his career at the National registered company or NCR in Ohio where another one of his colleagues started his path to fame Charles Kettering, who was also relatively famous because of his contributions to the automobile industry.

He was famous for creating the first electric cashier register and electric ignition system which changed the locomotive industry.

Which brings us to what his inventions actually were.

Deadly Invention #1

Leaded gasoline:

Kettering was originally the one who tasked Midgely to solve the pesky and horrible problem of engine knocking. Engine knocking wasn't just any sound, it was a sensation that was felt by people throughout their driving in the cars of that time. This knocking also sometimes suddenly stopped the power flow to the engine which was quite problematic as a car just suddenly stopping anywhere could both be dangerous and unpredictable.

Midgely soon realized that this was not an engineering problem but a chemistry problem, and while Midgely was passionate about chemistry he wasn't a chemist. So to start his research he took the basis of chemistry as his starting point.

The periodic table.

Midgley tested 33000 compounds and finally came to a solution.

LURIUM.

The engine knocking was dissipated by lurium however, lurium left a 'satanic garlic smell' in its wake which was not a solution Midgeley was looking for.

Midgely however soon concluded that, the heavier the element that is added to petrol, the more the knocking dissipated. Which was finally what turned him to lead. He tested this by adding a spoonful of lead to the engine and BOOM!! as if by magic the knocking completely dissipated.

This virtually overturned the automobile industry overnight. The limitations that first made people reluctant to buy a car were gone and thus registered car users in the US tripled exponentially.

However, this had dire consequences. Today, it is suspected that over 40000 - 80000 people especially children died every year of lead poisoning between the first usage of leaded gasoline to its ban.

But how did we find out about lead poisoning?

Enter Dr. Clair Patterson, he initially had the plan to measure the age of the earth by dating the oldest rocks known to mankind, however, he soon realized that he cannot truly get rid of lead from his lab which is a crucial thing to do in the dating process. He soon noticed that lead was everywhere due to emissions. In the blood of a human, in the hair of a human body, rocks that are far away from inhabited towns.

Due to his efforts, gasoline was finally banned in the US but people still suffer through its consequences. But why did it take so long and such hardships to ban leaded gasoline?

The main reason is that lead poisoning is very subtle until the very end. When lead enters the bloodstream the RBCs confuse it with other minerals that the cells actually need that are zinc, iron, etc.. Since lead mimics other viral minerals so well cells absorb them and this began their dance of death. Slowly they self-destruct and since there is no communication the brain fails to understand what is happening with the body as lead blocks neurotransmitters amongst the cells.

Perhaps I will explain more about Dr. Patterson's journey to ban leaded gasoline in a later post.

Deadly Invention #2

CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons

It was an age-old problem, i.e. to actually reverse the effect of heat on food items and to actually make a machine that emitted cold instead of warmth. which was when Midgley had another stroke of genius; CFCs.

Before the invention of CFC, companies used coolants such as ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and methyl chloride. But ammonia was notorious after the disastrous catastrophe in an ice manufacturing plant that got destroyed because ammonia in that building caught on fire. sulphur dioxide and methyl chloride on the other hand were toxic gases and caused deaths all around the country.

The situation genuinely got so bad that the government almost passed a law that banned the usage of home fridges.

Midgley was once again tasked with another problem to solve. Find a coolant that was actually both safe and effective in its job.

Once again Midgley knew the answer will come from his passion, chemistry. He narrowed down the elements in the periodic table that were gaseous at low temperatures. finally, there was one element that caught his eye; fluorine.

Now, fluorine was highly toxic on its own, however, Midgley was hoping to combine it with another element that will together make a stable compound and render fluorine non-toxic.

In just a few hours, Midgley and his team came up with a compound in which they combine fluorine, chlorine, and carbon. a new class of compounds called chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs.

Kettering finally concluded that this compound was non-toxic, non-flammable, and essentially safe for both humans and animals. He quickly partnered with DuPont to commercially start the sale of this compound in bulk after a successful previous partnership with the company over leaded gasoline. CFC was finally ready for commercial sale under the catchy name 'Freon'.

In 1932, it finally made its debut. The timing was near perfect, 15 more people were killed by methyl chloride leak. Just like leaded gasoline, it was an overnight sensation and by 1939 DuPont sold 8 million fridges.

Soon other companies used this compound to create a new AC cabinet. It was not actually the freon that caused environmental damages but actually when freon was repurposed into a handheld product that will be catastrophic for the environment and whose price we are still paying today.

By the 1970s, freon was used in almost everything, from ACs to hair sprays.

It was around the time when 2 scientists created the aerosol version of freon to be used as an insecticide mist which gave birth to the aerosol industry that one scientist found out the disastrous consequences of CFCs.

Enter James Lovelock, the scientist who found out the environmental effects of freon in a most unexpected way.

i mean look at that face. so happy and cute. that is the face of the man whose passion and wife is science.

Lovelock actually began this drastic discovery when one day he decided to know whether the haze in front of his house was actually natural mist or chemical compounds from the urban cities. In order to measure this he created a device that will help him accurately measure the synthetic compounds in the air with an accuracy never seen before. In order to measure this, he went on a grand sea voyage from England to Antarctica and just like Dr. Patterson he found out that high concentrations of CFC's emissions were everywhere.

Lovelock presented his findings at a scientific conference in 1976, his findings intrigued 2 chemists who decided to research further on this issue. They found out that unlike other chemicals CFCs had no natural sinks in the earth where they can be naturally dissolved.

Since there were no natural sinks the gas went upwards and accumulated in the upper atmosphere. while roaming in the upper atmosphere the sun's UV rays will ultimately break it down. This chemical reaction will release chlorine from CFCs and thus begins the process of destruction of the ozone layer.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS TO UNDERSTAND BETTER.

Chlorine singlehandedly was responsible for the ozone hole in the atmosphere of Antarctica. this caused an immediate alarm amongst the scientific community because as we all know ozone layer provides a protective layer against the sun's UV rays and prevents us from catching numerous fatal health conditions, most common being skin cancer.

If the emission of CFCs continues at this rate then half of the earth's ozone layer will be gone by 2050. What's more is that in places like DC or Paris, just being outside for 5 minutes will cause severe sunburns. Skin cancer rate will skyrocket and by 2065 plant life will be affected. There will be a decrease in co2 absorption during photosynthesis in plants.

After the Montreal Protocol and international collaboration, CFC was finally banned in 1982. However, the ozone layer destroyed by Midgeley's compound since its use from the 1920s to 1970s is not expected to recover till 2050.

First fic I read for the pairing: Obsession by yesbocchan [2k,T] Harry thinks Malfoy is up to something evil. Until he finds out maybe he's not the only one with an obsession. [just a cute little eighth year fic i saw on tumblr back when i was first getting into fandom stuff (and back into harry potter in general) when i was near the end of high school. it’s cute, it’s sweet, and i was curious about drarry as a concept so]

Fic that really sold me on the pairing: Stealing Sweaters by DorthyAnn [12k,T] It's their eighth and final year and over the course of several months, Harry and Draco have managed to become close friends. Their friends are entirely certain that they ought to be much, much more. So they just decide to... help things along. [listen, everything that DorthyAnn writes is phenomenal, so how could i not fall in love with this ship after this?]

Absolute favorite fic(s) for the pairing: Animus Nexus by MystyVander [96k,T] It's Eighth Year at Hogwarts and it seems Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy hate each other more than ever before. Everybody is sick of it. Somebody was tired of the two enough to curse them, binding them together. What at first appears to be a death sentence to both Harry and Draco turns out to be the thing the both of them needed the most. [it’s enemies to friends to lovers coupled with accidental bonding coupled with discussions of magical theory coupled with wizarding traditions with a few misunderstandings and some angst all set in eighth year and that’s basically the perfect combination for me.] Twist of Fate by Oakstone730 [302k,T] Draco asks Harry to help him beat the Imperius curse during 4th year. The lessons turn into more than either expected. A story of redemption and forgiveness. Pairings: HP/DM (Slash) Timeframe: 1994-2002 Goblet to 4 yrs post-DH EWE Rating T for language, high angst, content. [this fic has lived rent-free in my head for three years and it fucking slaps. there’s angst and fluff and so many bittersweet moments and it’s both canon compliant and completely canon divergent and i am obsessed with it. 40000/10]

Most recent fic I’ve read for the pairing: love me now (touch me now) by swisstae [3k,G] Harry's never had a bath. Draco plans on changing that. OR in which Harry gets his hair washed and Loves It (and Draco. He loves Draco too.) [this fic is adorable and sweet and i enjoyed it immensely.]

Favorite AU(s) I’ve read for the pairing: Alternate Sorting AU (Slytherin!Harry): Malfoy Flavor by Vorabiza [199k,E] Harry’s ready to banish the Golden Boy image and take charge of his life. Unfortunately for him, or fortunately, there are surprises in store for him. [Slytherin!Harry but it’s not an entire canon rewrite like most of the alternate sorting fics i love so much, so that’s fun. also severitus and just the right amount of soul crushingly painful angst. oh and it has a delightfully fluffy little sequel. ] Alternate Sorting AU 2: Electric Boogaloo (Ravenclaw!Draco): Chaos Theory by Tessa Crowley [102k,E] Chaos: when the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future. One gene varies, one neuron fires, one butterfly flaps its wings, and Draco Malfoy's life is completely different. Draco has always found a certain comfort in chaos. Perhaps he shouldn't. (warnings for: major character death, graphic depictions of violence, psychological torture, implied/referenced non-con) [as my notes on my bookmark said: GOD DAMNNNNN. I LOVE THIS FIC. I CRIED SO MUCH AND ALSO THERE WAS LAUGHTER AND JUST GOD DAMN. ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES. so that about sums it up.] Time Travel AU: Annus Mirabilis by Ren [39k,E] Harry and Malfoy are trapped at Hogwarts around the time the school was founded. Stuck with a different way of doing magic, with no chocolate, and with each other, they have to find a way to work together if they want a chance to go home. [i almost never fuck with time travel aus but… this one slaps. also? hogwarts founders era?? hell yeah. also also? their relationship progresses in a way that feels so natural and the tension is so palpable and the writing is excellent.]

Favorite Series for the pairing: Leo Inter Serpentes by Aeternum [746k,E,6 Works] Just one conversation between two eleven year old boys goes slightly differently, and the world changes. Just how much will be different with Harry being sorted into Slytherin, and how much will stay the same? [Slytherin!Harry? Harry, Draco, Hermione friendship? Severitus? All in a complete series re-write that’s currently six completed works deep? What more could you possibly need?]

Longest fic I’ve read for the pairing: I Do What I Want by XxTheDarkLordxX [509k,E] They say you shouldn't touch what isn't yours... Too bad no one told Harry that. A simple mistake that Harry made in his first year at Hogwarts is coming back to bite him in the arse. The war is over but the threat to his life is just beginning. This story begins with a simple apology that changes Harry’s life. It starts a domino effect that leads to unbelievable connections, undying love, unique past lives, unknown villains and an unstoppable family. Follow Harry and his friends on an epic adventure filled with twists, bumps, comfort, enemies, a new life and a lot of love. (warnings for: major character death, some character bashing) [the first (or first few? i forget) chapters are written in first person but they’re an internal monologue and the rest of the fic is not in first person, just so you know. Also, the concept slaps and the fic is cute and i love to see it (and i’ve read it thrice).]

Fic(s) with some of my favorite tropes: Matchmaking: Ron Weasley: Accidental Matchmaker by Phoenix_Waves [2k,T] "There's not a sexual tension out there that the man can't accidentally detect!" George beamed. "And then ask the stupid arse question that's going to light the spark and fan the flames." Lee added matter-of-factly. A fluffy Christmas one shot featuring our favorite older Gryffindors. [god this is excellent: the obliviousness, the mutual pining, the matchmaking, having the older gryffindor kids around and having a good holiday time- it’s all excellent.] Soulmates: Kiss Me Not by DorthyAnn [21k,T] Sometimes a witch or wizard's magical signature is so completely incompatible with another that they repel one another like magnets. On the other hand, if two magical signatures mesh well together, well there are no stronger relationships in all the world. In a sample of a thousand people, the average witch or wizard will be slightly repelled by four or five people and strongly repelled by only one, at the most. The opposite is true for attraction. But Harry Potter can't kiss anyone at all. [this is actually such a fascinating take on the classic soulmates trope. there’s no predestined person for everyone and there’s no magical guarantee of anything, just magic being a little difficult and i adore that. also the writing style is excellent and the characterizations are spot on.] Accidental Bonding + Bed Sharing: Let's Take A Chance On Happiness by endless_grey [21k,E] Harry works with Luna at her magical antique shop, and everything is going pretty well until a mysterious ring makes an appearance. Cue curse-breaker Draco Malfoy and an accidental bond, and suddenly Harry is magically married to his former nemesis. They need to break the bond before Hermione's fundraiser, but Harry doesn't remember "fall in love with the git" being part of the plan. [i discovered this fic while looking for something else, but it’s so good. i love their dynamic and it’s shift as the story progresses and i love both of their friendships with luna just as much. it’s funny and a little angsty and well written and has two of my favorite tropes in it. what more can i say?]

Nail Polish

20?? [Post 2020]

 They’re out running errands and the pharmacy is the last place they need to go. Edward takes the long way, going down a few extra aisles, in case there are any specials on things he might need. Étienne doesn’t mind and follows him around, pushing the cart. Edward’s busy looking at different cans of shaving cream on the other side of the aisle, when something catches Étienne’s eye.

 He pushes the cart a little ways ahead and casually looks at what it was his eyes had fallen on; a large display of sparkly, brightly coloured nail polish. It’s a new brand, from the looks of it, and the pharmacy seems to carry a large quantity of bottles from the classic colours to neon and everything in between.

 He doesn’t reach out for any, but he lets his eyes roam over the bottles, his hands firm on the cart, grasping it in place. The sparkly ones sure do look sparkly and he briefly wonders what the colour would look like on his nails and would the overall effect please him.

 “See anything you like?”

 Étienne jumps, having momentarily forgotten about Edward and gives him an apologetic smile, “No, no,” He says, casually, as he makes a motion to keep on down the aisle, “Just looking around.”

 Edward quirks an eye at his boyfriend and looks at the display behind him, “Oh, nail polish! Nice,” He says as if it is the most normal thing in the world to say, “Were you thinking of getting any?” The question is posed in an easy way that should be reassuring for Étienne, but it still sends a sliver of worry ricocheting through his body.

 It’s been years.

 Decades.

 And yet.

 “Oh – no, I mean – it’s nail polish. I don’t – with painting and all – I don’t wear any.” He babbles on nervously and Étienne knows that Edward knows that something is up and that he’s done a terrible attempt at playing it cool and casual. Edward gives him a look as if to say “did you forget that I do drag regularly and that I could care less if you decided to paint your nails” and Étienne fidgets on the spot.

 He wishes his feelings weren’t quite such a complicated mess. It’s been years now – a lifetime really, but the ghost of Petite Marie still haunts him despite his progress. Still, he needs to remember that he has made progress. He’s been – letting his hair grow out and he rather likes the way it looks. It’s past his shoulders and he absolutely loves putting it up in buns or letting it down to kiss his shoulders. Edward seems to really like it as well and he’s not about to complain about that.

 There was a time when make-up and nail polish were part of his routine, when skirts and dresses and high-heeled shoes had been second nature to him, but that had been a long time ago. There are still alleyways he can’t walk by anymore. It’s still raw and fresh to him. Too raw and fresher still. He still flinches when he touches bricks and there are mental wounds that simply do not seem to go.

 But – he has to admit that he does have a few blouses he found in the women’s department and he looks fantastic in them; so, he’ll take his wins where he can, if he must.

 However, there’s the issue of the nail polish.

 “El has a whole friggin Instagram dedicated to her nail art. It is a work of wonders and seeing her posts – kind of – I don’t know – made me wonder... if I could. On a purely artistic viewpoint.” He’s not sure whom he’s trying to convince, but Edward certainly isn’t buying his fib. (For the record, Élyse does have an Instagram account dedicated to her nail art. She does fabulous things to her nails, really.)

 “You know, it’s okay if you want to wear nail polish. I certainly won’t judge. Hell, I might even ask you to do mine if you’re any good at it.”

 Edward offers him a kind smile and all Étienne can do is blink as his mind short circuits and his soul has a minor apoplexy. He wish he could just – act like a normal person at times and not still be stuck on these issues from a past no one else remembers or cares about, but instead his mind is on over drive and he feels his heart rate pick up at the thought of bringing the bottle to the checkout line and then purchasing it.

 “I know – it’s just, still a lot.” He shrugs and tries to play it off as nothing, but he seems to forget that Edward knows him – that he knows about all that – that they’ve talked about this and so Edward places a comforting hand on his and gives it a squeeze. Étienne lets out a breath he hadn’t realised he’d been holding and he feels a little bit better.

 “It doesn’t have to be today. If you get it, that’s fine. If you don’t, that’s fine as well. Either way, you have my support.”

 Étienne nods and they spend the next few minutes standing in the aisle as Étienne does indeed think about. He’d like to just reach out and take a colour he likes, but the task seems Herculean, even if he thinks he’s being silly. (He’s not, he’s not, he’s not.)

 “I think – maybe, - not today.” He finally says. He waits for the disappointment to show on Edward’s face, but his boyfriend gives his hand another squeeze and then nods, simple as that.

 “Then not today it is.”

 They slowly make their way towards the next aisle and Edward picks up the conversation from where they left off. Étienne knows he’s doing it to keep his mind from the nail polish and for that, Étienne is eternally grateful.

 Edward doesn’t bring up the nail polish incident and Étienne quite honestly ends up forgetting about it. Life goes on, activities resume, and days turn into weeks and then weeks into months.

 Étienne happens to be back in town, on a short trip to spend some quality time with his boyfriend that they had both been looking forward to. Edward had told him to get settled, while he finished putting the laundry to dry and so Étienne had started taking a few things out of his luggage, reclaiming his side of the bed, when he notices a little something addressed to him on the night table.

 He takes the bottle and the card and allows himself a soft chuckle. He recognises the bottle as one of the shades of nail polish he had been eyeing that other time and the card simply says, “Whenever you’re ready.”

 He places the card in the middle of his sketchbook for safekeeping and then goes off to find his boyfriend, bottle of polish in hand, suddenly feeling bold and brave and inspired.

Hello, and welcome to Early and Often: The History of Elections in America. Episode 5: The Plundering Time.

Last time, we talked about the Chesapeake Bay in the 1630s. That decade saw the founding of Catholic-friendly Maryland, just north of Virginia. Maryland’s legislature was created and it slowly began to converge on Virginia’s model. And Virginia’s hostile relationship with Maryland lead to changes in both colonies, with the forced expulsion of Governor Harvey in Virginia and a mini-war between the two provinces over Kent Island, thanks to the prominent Virginian William Claiborne.

Today we’re going to talk about the history of the Chesapeake in the 1640s, during the English Civil War. Now, during this period, the histories of Maryland and Virginia were intimately tied up with what was happening back in Britain, so I’m going to have to go into a bit of detail about English history here as well. It was a very complicated period, and I’m not going to do it justice. If you’re interested in finding out more, you can listen to Mike Duncan’s excellent podcast Revolutions. The first episodes cover the English Civil War in much more detail than I can. And it wasn’t really just an English Civil War, the conflict had its origins in Scotland and spilled over into Ireland as well, though we can mostly skip that side of things.

But before we get to that, let’s jump back a bit to talk briefly about the life of William Berkeley. (His last name is spelled “Berkeley”, but pronounced “Barkley”.) Berkeley was made governor of Virginia in 1642 and he would serve in that post for most of the next 35 years. During that time the population of the colony jumped from 8000 to 40000. And it was under his leadership that Virginia really started to acquire a mature political culture.

Berkeley was born in 1605, the fourth son of a quite distinguished family that had included many members of Parliament and even close associates of Queen Elizabeth. He was a very distant relative of the idealist philosopher George Berkeley. His father had been involved in the Virginia Company when he was young. Berkeley was smart and witty and in fact an occasional playwright. He became a moderately successful courtier in the 1620s and ‘30s, running errands for King Charles. At one point, the King granted him a 14 year monopoly on the sale of “snow & ice” as payment for his work.

But he was unhappy and concerned for his future. His career hadn’t progressed as quickly as he’d wanted and he was always short on cash. I guess the snow and ice business wasn’t as lucrative as he’d hoped. And he simply didn’t like the King much on a personal level, though he was loyal to the monarchy. But perhaps even more importantly, in the late 1630s the political situation was destabilizing rapidly, and not in a way favorable to friends of the King.

You’ll recall that in Episode 3 I talked about how Parliament and the monarchy were increasingly at odds over money. Kings needed more and more revenue, but Parliament controlled the purse strings and was increasingly willing to make its own demands. This caused particular problems under Charles I, who had been king since 1625. Charles was a fairly rigid and unbending man, and a believer in the divine right of kings. And unlike his father James I he was quite inept in his handling of Parliament. In his early reign he repeatedly called and hastily dismissed Parliaments when he kept not getting the results he wanted. He started to impose taxes without Parliamentary approval and in 1629 he simply stopped calling Parliaments altogether and even arrested some members who had opposed him.

For the next decade Charles ruled on his own, but he was constantly hampered by a lack of funds. The taxes he had levied without Parliamentary approval were traditional ones, so he could at least claim some dubious legitimacy for them. But that meant that going even further would have been an even more serious break in precedent, one that could have caused a revolt. That, Charles was unwilling to risk. So frugality was the order of the day. The monarchy put itself on a tight budget.

But unfortunately for Charles, his ancestral home of Scotland proved his undoing. You see, unlike England, which had come through the Reformation with a Church only somewhat changed, in Scotland things had gone much further. The Scots had embraced a much more hardline, Calvinist faith. One that was far more skeptical of bishops and church hierarchy. Well, Charles’s sympathies lay in the exact opposite direction. He liked the richness and order of the Anglican Church, which better suited his worldview. Charles attempted to move Scotland in a more Anglican direction, but the Scots would have none of it, and they revolted. The King’s repeated attempts to suppress the uprising failed dismally and he was soon seriously short on funds. (Incidentally, Berkeley was present for these campaigns, though he showed no particular distinction.)

So, finally having no choice, in 1640 Charles called another Parliament. It was that or bankruptcy. Needless to say, after a decade without convening, the House of Commons now had a very, very long list of grievances and demands, including the execution of one of the King’s most trusted advisors. Charles of course resisted this, but over the next year his position deteriorated further.

Meanwhile Berkeley, assessing the situation, decided that the time had come to leave. He at first wanted to become ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, but changed his mind and secured the governorship of Virginia instead. The popular current governor -- he was the man who’d replaced the hated Governor Harvey -- was easily brushed aside. Berkeley had no experience in administration and few links to Virginia, and it’s likely that he got the job mostly because Charles was so preoccupied with Parliament. He was of a much higher social class than pretty much everyone else in Virginia, which helped.

In any case, Berkeley arrived in Virginia in early 1642 to take his new post. He was sworn in on the 8th of March and got to work. He hardly had a hectic schedule. Virginia was small, and government was rather minimal. He filled minor offices and approved land grants, that sort of thing. He did have to carefully manage the little factions that existed in the Council. Remember, these were mostly the same men who had sent Governor Harvey packing 7 years ago. Berkeley at least wanted to avoid that sort of embarrassment.

He met with the General Assembly, which still held its sessions in the Jamestown church, much as it had 20 years ago. You’ll remember, of course, that the General Assembly was still unicameral. The Governor, Councilors, and elected Burgesses all sat and voted together. Berkeley saw here an opportunity. Because the Council was so powerful relative to the governor, by siding with the Burgesses Berkeley could thereby enhance his own influence. So in that first session of the General Assembly he aided the Burgesses in various minor matters, while still taking care not to alienate the Council. When elections were held the next year, they turned out very favorable towards Berkeley.

We don’t know when exactly the General Assembly became bicameral. It was certainly during some point in Governor Berkeley’s reign, but that lasted three and a half decades. However, there’s a good chance it happened early, in 1643, during Berkeley’s second Assembly. So I’ll just assume that’s the case and talk about it here.

At some point, the Governor suggested that the Council and the Burgesses begin meeting and voting separately. This would increase the power of the Burgesses, since they now had a separate veto on legislation. The Burgesses readily agreed to the change, of course. The Councilors took a little persuasion, but Berkeley won them over with some behind the scenes maneuvering  So that was that. The Assembly now had two houses. The Council became the upper house, and the lower house became known as the House of Burgesses. (Note that people often call the General Assembly before this point the “House of Burgesses” as well, but that isn’t really accurate.)

This gave Berkeley a much stronger counterweight to the Council. And he made sure that the House of Burgesses was quite independent. He gave it the powers of the House of Commons and then some. Unlike the Commons, the Burgesses could choose their own officers, which gave them much more control over their own agenda. As a result of all this generosity, the Burgesses were generally loyal to Berkeley.

If there were any big disagreements about this move, records of them haven’t survived. Obviously Parliament was already bicameral, so they had a working example. And, really, it wasn’t that big of a shift. It was just making concrete the gap that already existed between different members of the Assembly. But as I mentioned last week when discussing the creation of Maryland’s bicameral Assembly around the same time, it was an important step towards the standard American style of government.

Meanwhile, in England, things had gone from bad to worse. Relations between Charles and his Parliament broke down completely and in August of 1642 war began. It wasn’t a fight to the death at first. The King didn’t want to destroy Parliament or vice versa. Both sides just wanted to settle things in their favor. Commons wanted major reforms and an end to unauthorized taxation. Charles didn’t want his authority diminished. But as the war dragged on for years, each side became more entrenched and more hostile to the other until there was no going back.

This was a very confused situation. There were no clean dividing lines between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. I mean, plenty of members of Parliament supported the King. But you can still draw some generalizations. The supporters of King Charles, unsurprisingly, tended to be Anglicans who approved of the religious status quo. The stereotypical Royalist was the cavalier, a dashing aristocratic type who only paid God lip service. On the other hand, Puritans tended to strongly support Parliament. They wanted the Church of England to more closely resemble the Calvinist austerity of Scotland, rather than the other way around. The stereotypical Parliamentarian was the Roundhead, a dour religious reformer with close-cropped hair.

The people of Virginia, for the most part, were supporters of King Charles. There were few Puritans in the Chesapeake. Most of them had gone to colonize New England instead. There were some Puritan ministers here and there, who sometimes got expelled from the colony for religious nonconformity. But Virginia as a whole was not fiercely sectarian. They had come to make money, not out of religious passion. They were more worried about their trade being disrupted or property rights being lost than heresy.

Berkeley himself had tried to impose a higher level of religious conformity upon his arrival, in accordance with the King’s wishes. But a few years later he reversed course and moved a bit more in the direction of toleration. Rather than rooting out nonconformist ministers himself, he left the decision to local communities. If the few Puritan groups wanted Puritan ministers, they could have them. So while Virginia as a whole very clearly sided with the Royalists and with the Church of England, they weren’t diehard ideologues. They were farmers and businessmen. In the various petitions and demands the Assembly sent back to England over the years, property rights and the regulation of the tobacco trade were always a much higher priority than anything else.

So as England tore itself apart, they watched and they waited.

But while the events unfolding in England were of great concern to the Virginians, they suddenly faced worse problems at home. Opechancanough, the Powhatan chieftain who had led that massacre against the English some 20 years ago had never actually been removed from power. He still led his people. And he was still patiently biding his time. On April 18, 1644, a Christian religious holiday, he launched another massive attack on Virginia. While last time 300 people had been killed, this time the count was 500, although that was a smaller percentage of the population. Still, it meant war yet again. An emergency meeting of the General Assembly was called to raise money and plan the colony’s next moves. Berkeley himself returned to England to try to get more assistance.

While he was away William Claiborne was placed in charge of the militia. He was the guy last episode who had failed to defend his claim on Kent Island against Maryland. But his hatred of Marylanders turned out to be pathological. So pathological in fact that he used the militia to settle old scores rather than deal with the far more pressing concern of Indian attacks. The events here are pretty confused, but I’ll try to disentangle what happened as best I can.

In Maryland, the English Civil War was perhaps even more concerning than in Virginia. The proprietor of the colony, Lord Baltimore, was a Catholic and a friend of the King, so Maryland stood to lose a lot should Parliament win. The Puritans were far more rabidly anti-Catholic than the Royalists, so religious toleration in Maryland was at stake, along with the property rights of the Catholic landlords. And within the colony itself, the Protestant-Catholic truce was under strain. There were repeated disagreements and arguments between the two sides, minor but worrisome in such a small colony. But, until the coming of Claiborne, tensions were manageable.

Perhaps in part because Maryland was Royalist, Claiborne became a supporter of Parliament, which was unusual for a Virginian. Upon getting his commission to lead the militia against the Indians, he instead teamed up with an English captain/merchant named Richard Ingle, another supporter of Parliament, who had his own grudge against the colony. A few years back Ingle had been charged by the Maryland government for high treason for denouncing Charles at the start of the Civil War. But Ingle had threatened to behead with an ax anyone who tried to arrest him and then he sailed away. The charges were basically dropped afterwards, but the bad blood remained.

So Claiborne and Ingle now had both personal and ideological reasons to attack Maryland, plus the men and the ships to do it. Claiborne attacked and took back Kent Island, while Ingle sacked the capital, St. Mary’s City, and overthrew the government. For two years the colony was plunged into a period of chaos known as the Plundering Time. Claiborne and Ingle didn’t bother to set up a new central government or anything, they simply let things fall apart. The Governor, Leonard Calvert, had been in England during the attack and upon his return he was forced to take refuge in Virginia. The acting governor was captured and sent back to England as a prisoner. Unfortunately, our records of this period are quite sparse, so all we really know is that for a time Maryland was dramatically unsettled.

Berkeley returned from his trip to England the year after the invasion of Maryland. He had been largely unsuccessful in getting any support for his war against the Powhatan, as the Royalists were all too busy losing the war to send help or even to care much at all about Virginia. Seeing how badly the war effort in Virginia had gone he removed Claiborne from command and took over personally. Under Berkeley things went much better. The Englishmen raided villages and eventually captured and killed Opechancanough himself. That effectively ended the war.

Setting a model for future relations between Native Americans and the US government, the Powhatan were made wholly subservient vassals to the English and their territory was reduced to a smaller reservation. But as more people flooded into Virginia the reservation was overrun by more and more settlers until it became merely another part of the colony. This would lead to yet more war in a few decades’ time, but for now things were calm again.

With the Indians suppressed, Governor Calvert was able to retake his province and restore Maryland’s government, with assistance from Governor Berkeley and some hired soldiers. Claiborne was again forced from Kent Island. He doesn’t appear to have suffered any real negative consequences for this or any other of his actions, and he still kept his high position in the Virginia government.

But the instability wasn’t over for Maryland yet, not by a long shot. Leonard Calvert, who had been governor of the colony since its founding a decade and a half ago, died in 1647. This caused a major problem. The colony was still in disarray, with a reduced population, and it had no money to pay the soldiers who had been hired to retake the colony. They were soon growing restless and mutiny was a serious possibility. Into this difficult situation stepped a fascinating figure, Margaret Brent. She was not only a woman, she was an unmarried woman, and one with substantial lands in the colony. A Catholic, she had come to Maryland in 1638, along with her sister, with the blessing of Lord Baltimore in England.

This was all quite unusual, both for the time and especially for the place, but Brent managed to become a prominent figure in the colony nonetheless. And when Governor Calvert died, she was named as executor of his will. She had a difficult job. She was tasked with selling off his assets and lands to pay off the soldiers and with trying to keep the situation from boiling over. Hamstrung by various legal difficulties, she decided to make a bold move. She appeared before the General Assembly and demanded to be given not just one but two seats for herself, one as a major landowner and the other as executor of Calvert’s will. She hoped that would help her get things done. She was of course refused, despite her protests. But it’s enough to earn her a mention in this podcast, as the first woman in America to demand a spot in a legislature. Not an elected spot or anything, but still.

In any case, it turned out that Governor Calvert’s estates were insufficient to pay off the soldiers, so she also sold off some property of his brother, Lord Baltimore, without permission. That resolved the immediate crisis, but when Baltimore heard about this he was furious. The Assembly sent a message defending her actions, but she had fallen out of favor. Soon she and her family left Maryland for Virginia. She spent the rest of her days there, at a plantation named Peace, never marrying.

But in Maryland, the situation had stabilized, for now. Governor Calvert’s replacement was himself soon replaced at the order of Lord Baltimore by William Stone, a Protestant. This may have been an effort to appease the Parliamentary faction in England. Lord Baltimore had been spending his time during the Civil War trying very hard to hold on to his family’s privileges and property, including Maryland. A Protestant governor would have been a good way to appease his potential opponents.

After arriving in Maryland, Governor Stone soon invited several hundred Puritans living in Virginia to take refuge in more tolerant Maryland. This both increased the population and made it seem like Maryland’s toleration wasn’t just a cover for Catholic supremacy. But this also had the effect of making Protestants the totally overwhelming majority in the colony, far more than before. And the Catholic leadership within the colony was disappearing, to be replaced by new Protestant officials. This would, in the end, help bring about the end of toleration for Catholics within a few decades. The open hand that Catholics had offered was not to be reciprocated.

But for now at least Maryland would remain religiously open. In 1649 Lord Baltimore promulgated an act of religious toleration, the first of its kind in America. Although Maryland had always practiced toleration, the principle had never actually been codified in law until now. The act stated that for the sake of “the more quiett and peaceable governement of this Province, and the better to preserve mutuall Love and amity amongst the Inhabitants thereof… noe person or persons whatsoever within this Province… professing to beleive in Jesus Christ, shall from henceforth bee any waies troubled, Molested or discountenanced for or in respect of his or her religion nor in the free exercise thereof”. Basically, if you were a Christian who believed in the Trinity -- that is, most Christians outside of a few fringe sects -- you could worship as you pleased without interference. Those who denied the trinity could be put to death, though. (Incidentally, the law also encouraged Marylanders to avoid using insulting labels for each other, such as “heritick, Scismatick, Idolator, puritan, Independant, Prespiterian popish prest, Jesuite, Jesuited papist, Lutheran, Calvenist, Anabaptist, Brownist, Antinomian, Barrowist, Roundhead, [and] Separatist”.)

This act was agreed to by the General Assembly and passed into law. Although the act would be repealed and re-passed and repealed again, it proved to be an important precedent. It didn’t explicitly separate church and state, but it was a step in that direction.

While these new understandings were being hashed out in the Chesapeake, more immediately consequential things were happening back in the mother country. The war had gone increasingly poorly for the King and in 1646 Charles was captured and taken prisoner by the Parliamentary forces. But that didn’t end the conflict. Charles still had supporters and even while imprisoned he was able to remain in contact with them, plotting further resistance and trying to get himself freed. His efforts were all unsuccessful though, and in the end they doomed him. The Parliamentary faction had become fed up. Any remaining love they had for their monarch had gone. His continued scheming seemed proof that he could never be trusted and that he would break any agreement he made. Charles seemed less an agent of God on Earth than of the Devil.

In the end, Parliament took the unprecedented -- and, to many, sacrilegious -- step of having the King tried for treason. It was legally questionable whether the king, who embodied the nation, could even in principle be guilty of treason. And the trial, before Parliament itself, was a politicized show trial. But none of that mattered. Charles needed to die and so he was found guilty and sentenced to death. He was beheaded on January 30th, 1649. At the beginning of the War, no one had wanted this outcome. The goal was never to overthrow the monarchy. It was simply to enforce each side’s vision of what the balance of power should be. But over the last near-decade of fighting, things eventually reached a breaking point. And there seemed to be no going back.

Soon after the execution, a republic was declared, the Commonwealth of England. One of Parliament’s most successful generals, the Puritan Oliver Cromwell, was put in charge. The theaters were shut down and celebrations of Christmas were banned. England was again religiously remade. There was yet another rebellion, this one led by Charles’s son, Charles II. But he was defeated by Parliament as well. He was forced to run, at one point hiding in a tree to avoid capture before escaping to the Continent. England was to remain a Puritan-dominated republic. For now.

The settlers of the Chesapeake followed all of these happenings with intense concern and increasing dismay. Upon the execution of Charles I, the Virginia Assembly declared its allegiance to his now-exiled son, Charles II, and issued a statement denouncing the “vnparalel'd treasons perpetrated… devesting [the King] of those rights, which the law of nature and nations and the knowne lawes of the kingdom of England have adjudged inherent to his royall line, and the law of God himselfe (if sacred writ may be soe stiled which this age doth loudly call in question) hath consecrated vnto him”. In other words, the Virginians were declaring themselves to be as Royalist as you could be, endorsing the monarchy’s divine right to rule in full. They even declared that anyone openly supporting the execution of Charles would be tried as an accessory after the fact.

In 1650 the English government responded to these provocations. First they attempted to block trade with Virginia, but this was an empty gesture without any force to back it up. However in late 1651 the English scraped together a fleet to subdue Virginia and bring it under Parliamentary control. William Claiborne was one of the leaders of the expedition. He’d been back in England for a little while now. The fleet first stopped at the English colony of Barbados in the Caribbean and secured control there. Then, it went on to the Chesapeake.

There was a tense standoff between Berkeley and the Parliamentary expedition as the fleet made its way towards Jamestown. Berkeley called up a thousand militiamen to guard the capital. But no one actually wanted bloodshed and no shots were fired. It was more a show of force to help ensure a reasonable settlement. A truce was agreed to and terms of surrender were worked out. The English weren’t looking to punish the Virginians. Berkeley was removed from office, of course, but he was allowed to keep his lands and he could stay in Virginia if he chose. Which he did. Property rights were respected. No real effort was made to impose Puritan beliefs on the colony. And perhaps most importantly, trade with England was restored in full. All in all, a generous settlement. Parliament simply didn’t want to expend more effort on Virginia than was necessary.

Parliament had neglected to include instructions as to how Virginia was now to be governed, so a temporary agreement was hashed out. The colony was allowed to keep the General Assembly, so long as the previous anti-Parliamentary legislation was repealed. But actually the House of Burgesses was given even more power than before. There was no longer a king to appoint governors or councilors, so those posts would now be appointed directly by the Burgesses. In other words, elected officials were now the ultimate source of all political power in Virginia. Parliament could send another fleet if the colony got too out of line, but everyone hoped to avoid that. This was a very radical thing to do in such a low key way, although things had been done similarly in New England for a while now. Virginia was being left to rule itself in a quite democratic fashion. At least until Parliament came up with a new plan. But Parliament had its own problems to deal with, and Virginia would keep this “temporary” form of government for the rest of the decade.

So. Virginia had been subdued, but what about Maryland? Well, Maryland wasn’t actually included as part of their mission, perhaps thanks to the intervention of Lord Baltimore. Instead, the fleet’s instructions were to “upon your arrival in Virginia… reduce all the plantations within the Bay of [Chesapeake] to their due obedience to the Parliament and the Commonwealth of England.” Maryland wasn’t mentioned, only Virginia was. But whatever the intent of the instructions had been, the ambiguous wording gave William Claiborne an opening to attack Maryland yet again. Within a few weeks of the submission of Virginia, he took a contingent 70 miles north to St. Mary’s City and yet again! overthrew the government. But, yet again!, he had overreached. Higher officials reversed his actions. The old proprietary government under Lord Baltimore was soon back in place, and the old governor restored to his post. The government of Maryland was of course now expected to remain loyal to Parliament, but otherwise things went back to the way they were before.

So that’s where things stood in 1652. Despite all the commotion, and despite all the bloodshed back in England, things hadn’t really changed too much in the Chesapeake. Berkeley was out as governor, and Maryland’s growth had been hindered by instability, but there had been no radical revolutions in government. The colonies answered to a new master, but were still mostly left to their own devices. Virginia, especially, became even more independent.

As we’ll see in the next episode, this was partly just because England was still preoccupied with its own affairs. And also remember that the colonies were in fact still quite small and unimportant. The high death rate kept the population low and the economy stagnant. The Chesapeake was a backwater. The English possessions in the Caribbean, especially Barbados, were richer, more developed, and a higher priority overall.

But also, I think part of the reason was that Virginia had come up with a style of government that worked for its unique situation. They were 4000 miles and several months of travel away from England, so most decisions simply had to be made locally. Which is obvious enough. And relatively representative government made sense, given that Virginia was still relatively egalitarian. There were only a few thousand settlers in the Chesapeake, which was simply not yet large enough to support the sort of hereditary aristocracy that existed in England. Virginia was becoming more stratified, but that process was still underway. Giving all the freemen a voice in government made perfect sense at this point.

So the elections kept going, despite the change in management. Representative government in Virginia had survived the English Civil War.

Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ)

Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is the center of art from ancient to modern and contemporary with more than 40000 works. The collection of the museum dates back from the 17th century to the present day. It can be said that this unique place in the center of Québec art and artists. If ever planning to visit or already on the eastern coast of Canada or the United States of America, this museum should be on your places to see the list. Museum also knowns as a National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec but its original name is more common among the people. Because of that, I will continue with its original name from now. Pavillion of the Musée National des beaux arts du Québec (Source).

History of Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec

In 1920, the Québec government established an area named Musée de la province to be the cultural place for the people. The first building of the province, the Archives du Québec started to be constructed in 1927 and finished in 1933. Archives du Québec opened its door on 5th June 1933 with its natural science and fine arts collections. Archives du Québec served as a provisional archive, art, and natural art museum until the natural science collection was removed in 1962. One year after removing the natural science collection name of the Archives du Québec change to the Musée du Québec in 1963. In 1979, Archives du Québec moved to Laval University. Until 2002, the museum holds so many important collections that attract thousands of people. In the year 2002 name of the museum change to Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec after the adoption of Bill 125 by the National Assembly. Actually there are four more different building serves as a museum at the Battlefield Park. So we can say that this place is a museum complex. I will give brief information about each building to help you to have an idea about all the museums and plan your trip.

Pierre Lassonde Pavilion opened at 24rd June 2016 (Source). Gérard-Morisset Pavilion The first building built for the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is the Gérard-Morisset Pavilion. Construction studies started around May 1928 and finished the first quarter of 1931. Gérard-Morisset Pavilion opened to the public in June 1933. The building is really fascinating with its marble, Victorian-style steps, carved ceilings. The Gérard-Morisset Pavilion is a really fascinating building (Source). Charles Baillairgé Pavilion The second used by the museum is the Charles Baillairgé Pavilion. Charles Baillairgé Pavilion used as a prison until 1970. After two years long renovation after the acquiring of the property, finally in May 1991 the building opened as a new home of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Charles Baillairgé Pavilion was built as a prison (Source). Central Pavilion A glass-dome shaped pyramid known also as a Central Pavillion or Grand Hall built between 1998 and 1991 as a museum's visitor center of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Also, you can see the picture of the Central Pavillion from the first picture of the post. Central Pavillion is located between the Gérard-Morisset Pavilion with the Charles Baillairgé Pavilion. It is not a very big structure but still impressive (Source). Pierre Lassonde Pavilion The last building of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is the Pierre Lassonde Pavilion. Pierre Lassonde Pavilion started to construct in 2013 and the building opened in June 2016. Also, Pierre Lassonde Pavilion is very close to the Saint-Dominique Chruch where is another place worth to see around the Battlefield Park.

Pierre Lassonde Pavilion includes a cafe in its main lobby, a courtyard adjacent to the lobby, a white spiral staircase, and a gold-colored elevator (Source).

Where is The Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec?

The museum is located over the Grande Allée, very close to the center of the city, Old Québec. Bus stops of lines 11 and 295 just in front of the main entrance of the museum. Unfortunately, there are no tram or metro lines at Québec but the buses are very efficient. Also, if you come to the Québec by train, you can take 30-40 minutes of walk from the main train station to the museum. You can find your walking route from this link. The museum is open every expects Monday. In addition to Monday, it is also closed at Easter Monday and National Patriots Day (18th May). However from time to time depending on the type of activity some of the buildings in the museum complex may be closed. Please check the museum website to get the latest information. I bought a collector’s edition of Torment: Tides of Numenora for 1/5 of the original price. Sold them because I considered them decadent. Regretting selling Incal now.

I don’t quite understand how it happened, but I bought my first Anaïs Nin diary - 1931-1934 in November 2017. I don’t remember how it happened. The era of purity has ended only on 20180426, so it makes no sense. Though maybe I bought it without intention of indulging in decadence. I remembered reading the redacted version of the diaries around 2003 and not encountering anything especially sexual there. Perhaps I bought it out of curiosity or to enjoy her writing once again. Oh, now I remember. I saw that diary on used books market. Then it got sold before I decided to buy it so I ordered it from the internet.

My first incident with damaged book this year. Sold it in used book store because I was too exhausted to report it.

Anyway, apparently I was already reading the diary 1931-1934 because I wrote this on the same day:

HTML & CSS: design and build websites   - Jon Duckett This book was very helpful for me. It’s very nice and colour and big. I could take it to coffee houses. I got it because I always ended up forgetting the basics. Unfortunately it’s a bit outdated because it was written in the early days of HTML5 and CSS3.

Little Birds - Anaïs Nin

Actually have read it and it was quite messed up and made me feel much worse. Lots of lying and cheating and she was getting worse and worse ideas with every page. From what I understand, the publication of these underacted diaries in 90s made lots of readers/critics turn against her and made her fade into obscurity. I finished reading it on 01 October. My impressions were following:

“Finally finished reading it. It was very interesting, but also very sad and twisted. Anaïs Nin had some serious issues and unfortunately she ended up making some seriously evil decisions basing on twisted way of thinking. From what I understand. From one side it was like watching a trainwreck, from another it was just distasteful, but the third side was seeing the amazing inspiring relationship between two writers - Anaïs and Henry. I remember this book especially fondly because it introduced me to the excellent Polish military history/science book publisher - NapoleonV - in 2012, I think. I was looking for new interesting books about WWI in a local history book store and saw the cover with A7V on it and immediately knew I have to have it!

I loved the theories of the author - especially that he predicted the need of massive saturation of infantry units with AT guns. He proposed giving each infantry battalion an organic AT gun company of 6 47mm infantry guns and then attaching even multiple companies of 47mm infantry guns to infantry battalions.

It’s very similar to the American tank destroyer doctrine.

Used ebook reader with wifi and working buttons. The cover is cracked but it doesn’t seem to affect its functioning. My old reader doesn’t have wifi and apps and has malfunctioning buttons that work randomly.

It was a great purchase because it allows browsing the internet - which means reading text-heavy blogs on e-ink screen. Also, allows me to do it from bed which puts less burden on my bad back.

I installed Brave browser on it. Have read a lot of internet fiction and blog entries on it. Great stuff. Except that it’s still basically the cheapest ebook reader with wifi and touchscreen with outdated android and is somewhat crude.

I wish more websites would be designed to be ebook reader friendly, though.

It’s weird to realise that books got so much less expensive here that if I’d have a minimal wage job, for like two years, I’d fill all of my shelves.

In 2008 a Wh40k novel would cost 81% of daily minimum wage I was earning cleaning in a factory. Nowadays same novel would not only be physically cheaper - the old price in bookstore after inflation would be 44pln and new price ordered and collected in a bookstore within 1 day of order would be 31pln.

So it would cost 40% of today's daily minimum wage. It’s funny how privilege works.

Anyway, when I sold the Anaïs Nin books, I got 1/7,7th of cover price for them. When I was selling my Forgotten Realms books in 2006, I got 1/3 of cover price for them. So, nowadays, selling books essentially just buys shelf space.

Even when I was selling out my military history book collection, in the beginning, I’d get 1/4-1/3 for them but then the prices just collapsed because it would be norm for books to be available for, like 1/2 of cover prices on auction sites.

Additionally, all the cheap bookstores created a bizarre situation where ebooks are more expensive than paper or even hardcover books sent from another end of Europe.

Big problem was fear of missing out due to books going out of print and disappearing from the market. Saw multiple books disappear from stores during the first half of they year, so when I got money, I was buying everything I could.

As a result, I wasted quite a lot of money on Anaïs Nin books because I got all the diaries and erotic stories instead of buying them after finishing previous ones. So, when I gave up mid-first expunged diary/in the beginning of the second unexpunged diary, it turned out I’ll have to sell whole collection. I actually saw some disappear from a local bookstore chain to never appear again and it scared me into buying the whole thing ASAP.

The threat of books disappearing from the market is a big problem with printed books. tfw ebooks are more expensive and also not the same as hardcovers.

It’s generally a big problem because I have literally, like 90 unread books.

Though I’m slowly going through the ones I have accumulated. At least I have something to enjoy when I’m broke.

It will probably be under 10k total when it is finished and I have it roughly outlined already from start to finish. Covers some important events from Angela’s life age ~12 to ~19. I have only written around 400 words for it this month, but it is currently sitting at 4169 words, most of it edited. Rotation 1: Selecting Organizations

As of now, all we’ve done is write letters in order to send to organizations who are trying to fight the human trafficking issue in Nepal. Each of us has written a separate letter, to a separate organization, in the hopes that they’ll reply and explain a way that we can assist in their fight. The rest of our blog posts will be about the responses of the organizations, and if we are able to help, how we actually help.

One of the five organizations was Seven Women. Although they are not an organization that fights specifically for human trafficking, their cause is one that prevents it. This organization was started when a woman saw seven disabled women in a tin shed in Kathmandu. She dedicated her remaining $200 to them by hiring professionals to teach these women how to produce and sell goods. Afterwards, she started Seven Women and their cause is to educate women and helping them maintain a business or get a job to stay out of poverty. Helping women stay out of poverty correlates to human trafficking because traffickers lure women into this trading business because they need money. By helping women make money, more and more women will stay away from the cycle of human trafficking.

The second organization was Free for Life International which was found in 2006 . They have a mission which is to give the identification, assistance and restoration of victims and survivors of human trafficking. To achieve their mission they have been giving shelter, education, sustainable programs, and help monitor the border between Nepal and India. They also partner with other organizations to have more opportunities to give to the victims. This organization helps women and girls that are victims of forced labor and sex trafficking. The education they have helps the survivors get scholarships to get more opportunities of careers in the future. The shelters are to help rehabilitate, give a home, and care for the victims health. The sustainable programs help by bringing awareness to the communities to have more people help out on the issue. Lastly they help monitor the border between Nepal and India because Nepal is known as the “source” country for human traffickers.

Another one of the five organizations was 3 Angels Nepal. Their organization helps specifically with human trafficking in Nepal.  organization has a program called a Radio Reach Program that allows them to broadcast missing women and children so the public is aware of children that have been kidnapped or taken away. This program is effective because many families in remote villages own radios. This allows the families and villages to safeguard their wives, sisters, and daughters.  Safe havens were created for women and children that have been rescued from traffickers along with women that have escaped abusive relationships. The safe havens focus on education and rehabilitation in attempt to help them lead independent lives.

The fourth organization was Maiti Nepal and their mission is to prevent Nepali females trafficking, those who are traded for labor or those who are sexually abused. For 25 years, this group has done an incredible job towards helping Nepal, they’ve been able to convict 1601 traffickers and intercepted almost 40000 women from potential risk of trafficking at the Nepal-India and Nepal-China borders. Not only that, but they’ve also offered rehabilitation services, most likely at their Itahari, which gave them medical services along with a safe shelter and counselling, as well as job offers for those who ended their rehabilitation process. Finally, the children are offered education support and a shelter at the Teresa academy, mainly for orphans to grow up well.

The last organization is Spirit of America. Spirit of America helps with many issues in many foreign countries, but not just by themselves. They often team up with the US Army to help provide local organizations with the right equipment to do their job, or they donate equipment to the US Army so the Army can bring it to the organizations themselves. They often visit the location and meet up with the Army in order to have the experience of living in the area that they are trying to help. It gives their supporters a new sense of sympathy for the people plagued by the various issues. Although they often do not directly fight the issues, they do provide a great help in supporting the fight to the issue.
