When calling in after hours... please think first.
Just a vent. I work at a nationwide answering service overnights. So...I get lots of calls for apartments complexs, doctors, hospitals, victim lines (*we send the messages to the on call staff. We are not trained counselors), medical companies, service companies... it runs the complete gamut.
When folks call in after hours for emergencies-I do everything in my power to get that call to the on call staff as quickly as possible. But...people seem to forget that those on call are SLEEPING. I have to wake them up. They aren't sitting next to me waiting for your call. So please, be patient and let me do my job. Calling in every 2 minutes isn't necessary. (Also, if you are say...having chest pain? GO TO THE ER. Don't wait. The hospital will contact your doctor.) And don't ever ask for the on call staff's phone number. That will never be given.
Also, just because *you* think it's an emergency, it doesn't mean the company you are calling does. The vast majority of our clients have very specific lists of emergencies we can reach the on call staff for. So, even if you cry, no matter how much I want to help you, if it isn't listed or there isn't any grey area in their instructions that I can fudge your issue to relay it, there's nothing I can do beyond taking a message for the office.
And, to those folks who insist on calling places that are clearly not going to be open- like a lawyer at 3am; or the roofing company you expect to reach at 4am on a Sunday for a quote-just stop.
The lack of any kind of common sense boggles my mind.
So... if you find yourself calling somewhere for after hours service...be patient. Don't take it out on the person answering your call. We can't always help you, but we always look for a way to.
