The White Album - false parasol, Leucocoprinus cepistipes, Marasmius sp, puffball - conventional wisdom says Lycoperdon perlatum doesn't grow on wood and it's probably Apioperdon pyriforme, but it looks like the former to me. Also I've witnessed some bizarre behavior re: using damp decaying wood as host around here, like species of Russula growing out of a dead log. Desperate times call for desperate measures, etc

i fucking love native science
western medicine's advice on canker sores: tough it out, numb it if you can't
yupik medicine's advice on canker sores: put some pear shaped puffball spores on it and it'll be gone in the morning
i am not kidding when i say that the pain goes away once i put the spores on. seriously. the swelling has even gone down.
Apioperdon pyriforme, the pear shaped puffball, has even been investigated by western medicine and found to have anti microbial properties
i'll update in the morning, but christ does it feel nice to be able to mitigate the low level immense misery that is canker sores

Apioperdon pyriforme | Stump Puffball
Fall to winter Edible
The Stump Puffball is like a tiny version of the puffballs you might see growing in your lawn.  It likes to grow on rotting wood, particularly that of deciduous trees.  Each ball is between about 1 and 2.5 inches wide.  These guys were maybe an inch each.  Obviously they’ve already gone to spore since it’s past their season, but when they’re actively growing they should be shaped roughly like an inverted pear and have a smoothish tan to light brown skin.  They’re supposedly edible when young and still white and firm on the inside, but not particularly sought after.
Bonus closeup for more details!

Pear-shaped puffballs (Apioperdon pyriforme) huddle in the moss in the late October woods. The central pores of some of the puffballs in this cluster have already begun to rupture and will soon release their spores.

White-tailed deer before he shed his antlers and some mushrooms from last fall. Apioperdon pyriforme, dryad's saddle against a background of Laetiporus sulphureus, and the chonky white mushrooms I never quite definitively identified. Probably Hypsizygus ulmarius, the elm oyster

The puffball (Apioperdon pyriforme) is one of the saprophytic woodland fungi that is important for the recycling of the nutrients from dead organic matter. The mature fruiting body releases its spores with the aid of rain and wind through a centrally-located perforation.

Puffballs in profusion! Flourishing fungus! Lots of rain has led to a HUGE flush of these beauties, probably Apioperdon pyriforme. A lovely landscape surprise. #fungus #puffballs #apioperdonpyriforme #garden #landscape https://www.instagram.com/p/CU5FxYtgW1w/?utm_medium=tumblr
