its funny how i fear nothing more than aging-- not death, but the physical tells of aging-- yet all of the most beautiful women ive ever met were physically "old." my aplanguage teacher, i still remember, had crows feet at her eyes that made her smile light up, and a wavering voice that i found absolutely endaring. she also had, like, so much wisdom, and i remember talking with her once, and she told me to talk slower; "you talk fast because you feel your words dont have power-- im sorry for psychoanalyzing you, but rae, they do have power," and i've been working on my word pacing ever since.
and again with my apliterature teacher. she has smile lines that just further her already expressive emotions and, once again, raise her smile, and she is SOO full of energy and life, and every time i'd look at her i'd just get encapsulated with the beauty that does come with age. i'd be lying if i said i was over my fear completley, but both of these women 1) fitting into a "motherly" role when i had nobody else to be such, and 2) helping me transform my way of thinking and encourage me to educate myself further helped me get closer to overcoming it.
and it still happens, outside of academia, too. occasionally i'll have a customer thats a mother with a gaggle of children and i just stare and admire how well the years treat those with kind hearts.
#rambling#nonsensical at that but i needed to say it somewhere before the thought left me lol#add to diary later

The beginning of the 2nd week of school! I felt way better about today. It’s like even though I’m tired, I feel good about going to school and the work I’m doing. I definitely have a better handle on my classes now that I’ve been exposed to them. Hope I can keep this up! Day 8: what classes are you taking? I’m taking AP Language, AP BC Calculus, AP US History, AP Physics, AP Research, Latin 3, Therapeutics, and Math Seminar. It’s a lot but I’m feeling optimistic about it. #study #studygram #studyspace #studyblr #studying #studymotivation #study_time #aplang #aplanguage #apbccalc #apbccalculus #apush #apphysics #apphysics1 #apresearch #latin

Scored
Just received my students' scores on the AP Language test taken back in May. It's humbling as an educator to see the students' performance level. Some scored lower than I had believed they would; some scored higher than I believed they could. The average score (with 44 taking the test) was a 1.977. Only 16% scored a 3 (This down from last year's passing rate of 32% [highest in school history on that AP test]). No one scored a 4 or 5.
It's back to the drawing board for me. Now begins the piece I have the most difficulty with- reflection.
Where was the growth? for me? for the students?
What practices need to be pruned? What practices need to be nurtured?
How can I be honest about my craft without falling prey to excuse and blame?
(I'll have a better sense when the College Board releases their Instructional Planning form of where to go from here.)

AP English Exam
I took my AP Language exam today; it was waaay easier than I expected. And I used a term "synecdoche" which I honestly wasn't sure what it was at the time, but I decided to go for what I thought it was, and it turns out I was right, so yay! :D The multiple choice was insanely easy, like the easiest multiple choice I've had this school year with AP English. The prompts were meh, the best I thought was the rhetorical, it was FILLED with strategies so thank the AP lords for that.. and yes, that's it.
I'm nearly stress free now

On The Whole Teen Love Thing
I have a strong feeling that this post is going to blow some minds, and I hope that I’m right. When you’re young, everyone expects you to be in love. Everyone expects you to spend hours agonizing over text messages that you were sent, or you to be absolutely head over heels. The whole idea is that you get to find someone who makes you better than you already were. Personally, I think that is a load of crap.
A lot of my friends have been in some less than ideal relationships, and I have happily watched from the sidelines, grateful that I wasn’t caught up in that mess of emotions. I have collectively spent hours, maybe even days, listening to my friends complain about the stuff their boyfriend does, or the things that they do that bother him. I have watched my friends stop doing things they enjoy for the sake of someone else. Let me tell you something, folks: Love is not about control; it’s about being with someone who encourages you, someone who understands you, completely and utterly, when others don’t.
It seems pretty obvious to me that a lot of relationships are controlling and unhealthy. When your boyfriend wants to monitor your text messages, or your girlfriend randomly checks in to see if you’re home, they aren’t protecting you; they are trying to curb their jealousy. But the thing is, this isn’t what relationships are about. Relationships are supposed to be partnerships; in love, you find the person you fit well with. Love is not about control. Love is not about demands. Love is actually a lot simpler than people make it out to be.
Ideally, a relationship works by trusting the person you love. You trust them to make the right call; that is all there is to it. There is no forcing them to do anything. The goal is that you both leave in the morning and head to school or work or whatever, and you do what you do, and then you come home to the person you want the most. That’s it. You don’t make a person change their job, their education, their plan for your sake. Relationships are not about fundamentally shifting someone, or about tearing them down. There are no ultimatums. Love is not about control. Instead, it is about compromise, and there are a lot of people who could take a lesson away from that.
