KAN MINHWAN – JUSTICE. AGENT 11.
                                                   [   FILE TYPE: CLASSIFIED   ]
//: LOADING PROFILE: KAN MINHWAN ...
international age: 25 birthplace: busan, south korea arcana: justice team number: eleven
//: LOADING MUTATION: WING MANIFESTATION  ...
application one: enhanced endurance — An ability that Minhwan likes to think developed from his own past, this power is one that is absolutely necessary to the manifestation of wings. Allowing him to withstand great amounts of pain with little to no change in his typical calm state of mind as well as maintaining his new appendages for long periods of time despite his body’s physical state, this ability ensures Minhwan’s comfort as his body warps itself to adapt to his power as well as aligns with his personality in stressful situations. However, aside from the application with growing his wings, such resilience allows Min to endure longer periods of time without supplies that are considered essential to human survival like air, sleep, or food
application two: regenerative healing factor — Every time he feels his wings protruding from his back, ripping through skin and breaking bones, Minhwan is always grateful that he developed this portion of his power. Without it, he’d likely never choose to grow his wings, his body physically unable to handle the strain that it took. What movies dramatize about having wings is never the same as he is forced to hear his bones breaking and muscles tearing to formulate around them. The pain is never too great with the other benefits of his power but he’d eternally grateful that the tissue is able to regenerate, stitching itself back together without a bruise while also rendering him immune to some injuries.
application three: flight —  Perhaps his favorite part of his ability because once those wings are out and flapping, Minhwan is up in the air as soon as he can. Useful for surveillance and some attacks, he utilizes his wings to fly as high and as far as he can. Due to the nature of his other abilities, he’s able to summon great amounts of speed and endurance to fly for long periods of time. He can also fly upwards to high parameters as his body is able to withstand great amounts of air pressure. Although awkward when he had first begun to fly, he’s learned the manner of flight as if it were something like walking to him.
overall strengths and weaknesses: —  With an ability like his, it is absolutely crucial to be physically and mentally strong as Min is. To grow wings is not something to be taken lightly but maintaining those wings is something that takes concentration and a level head that Min was lucky enough to already have. Stress or strong bouts of emotion doesn’t shake him because of his abilities on top of his already well disciplined background. Already having been a quiet and overall apathetic person before developing his abilities, the appearance of these powers only heightened his aloof nature.
When his wings have grown, they essentially become like new appendages to Minhwan as they are just as much part of his body for that period time as his arms are. Due to the capability of his wings, he’s able to maneuver quickly and utilize them as he would his own limbs. Sturdier than human skin, the bones of such appendages make them into a useful weapon as well as a source of travel. However, just as Minhwan would experience pain if his arm were cut off, his wings are just as painful if not more.
Strong as Minhwan may be, immune he is not. Where his enhanced endurance allows him to ignore normal human needs and continue on, there’s a point before his own body begins to turn on itself so while Min may not be eating, his body begins to cannibalize itself at a higher rate than the normal body does under high levels of stress. After such long periods of resilience where the amount that he’s enduring outweighs the rate that he’s able to heal, his body will give out to unconsciousness and force himself into healing at a much slower rate. As for his typical healing, threats that would kill him immediately like a gunshot to the head or lethal abilities would still have the same effect on him as it would a regular person as his body would be unable to heal itself fast enough. There are also times where he may heal too fast like if he were to get a sort of poison underneath his skin that would require medical attention, his skin would heal over too fast for them to rid him of the poison - likely having to continuously remove it before taking medical action

PRE-MUTATION
i. a legacy or a curse?
he was greeted by softness. the low sigh of a nurse to his mother of ‘congratulations’ and the quiet mumbles among the hospital staff counting their tools after having cut minhwan from his mother’s belly. the silent tears running down his mother’s face as she held him in her arms, clutching him tight as if he were all she had left. and yet… the loud void of where his father should be.
as minhwan grew, he would learn that this softness would be his new existence. his father, being an acclaimed businessman and on the way to being the vice-president of a company that min couldn’t find himself to care about, required the utmost best behavior from those close to him. as for what would happen if he did act out, his young mind had repressed those memories long ago but it wasn’t hard for his present self to guess. afterwards, at another outing, his mother would straighten a tie onto min’s young form and remind him not to speak unless he was spoken to.
they never spoke to him.
his mother and he became figureheads of his father’s perfect family. discipline, tradition, and strength were all the markings of a good man, his father would say to him. and just as long as he followed those principles and made sure that his father looked good in front of others, he could have anything he ever desired. like a deal with a sea witch, minhwan would trade his voice for whatever he wanted. holding the privileged and fortunate life of a chaebol, minhwan would simply stand to his mother’s side and watch as any semblance of a childhood for himself was washed away.
ii. at least apathy is a path
as minhwan grew, it became more and more obvious to his mother that the pressures instilled in him from youth had made a difference. unsociable, closed off, and aloof, min had simply learned to hide away anything that made him feel something and lock it away until he was alone. emotionally distant from most people, when he did show some sort of emotion, it came out in a burst. still young, he felt as if there was no other choice but to either hide it away or let it explode from you like a wildfire. the only solace he could find was in his mother, the only one who he felt he could show or trust anything with.
when everything in your life seems to be quiet, you learn to be quieter. school lessons held in their home or small tutoring classes became something of a bore to min, who instead chose to hide away somewhere quiet with a book before his father would know. aside from the hours he spent standing while his father socialized, there was not much human interaction for him and perhaps he liked it that way. or perhaps, he was just lonely. unsure of where he was going, unsure of what he wanted, or what his goals were, he picked up little hobbies in his fits of boredom: astronomy, reading, and sometimes even things as trivial as bird-watching. anything to fill the time until he could make his escape.
until then, you do anything that your father wants you to, a dull hum filling your existence in the meantime.
after all, silence and discipline were not qualities born within many but ones that had to be beaten and poured into you, minhwan knew. the only consequence after it was all over? a dull, almost metallic hum grinding against your mind and coiling tighter and tighter with every breath you took.
iii. change is for the people who deserve it
when his father finally let him go from his clutches to university, minhwan took a breath of fresh air for what seemed like the first time in his entire life, freedom pumping through his veins like adrenaline. of course, min was still accountable for what he did at school but it was still a taste of something new. he found ways to blossom, snark and sass working their way into his vocabulary and the occasional drink journeyed into his lips from time to time. but after all, his father would have already won, having twisted min into something that would never be a normal student or person again. even with a brand new place and a brand new feeling in his bones, something he hadn’t let himself feel in what seemed like forever, it couldn’t erase the fact that he was still his father’s son - that he would still reflect on his own father. the damage was done to minhwan.
he could only wish that it stopped with him.
in just the instant that everything felt better, he should have known everything could only become worse. in the time that minhwan had gone to university, his parents had taken it upon themselves to spend however much they wanted until it all came to a head when the company gave the vice-presidency to someone else. years of work and wooing gone in a matter of seconds, like a fabric slipping through the fingers of his parents. money came in slower and slower until eventually his mother had to tell him that they couldn’t afford to continue sending him to college.
iv. with a whimper not a bang
a year from graduation but no way to pay, minhwan had no other choice but to return home, or what would otherwise be known as his cage. the lifestyle he and his family had become accustomed to wasn’t going to cut it anyone more but his father wasn’t willing to budge. insistent that he’d be able to find something else, that he didn’t need his wife or min to help him, they continued to fall deeper and deeper into debt and on the nights that his father would drown himself in his sorrows, min could never stop himself from hearing the echoes against their walls…
that it was all his fault.
part of him knew that that couldn’t be true. but there was always something in him that said otherwise. that while min was letting himself feel emotions that he hadn’t before, his family was falling apart at the seams and he didn’t bother to notice. finally, as his last grip on his freedom before he gives it up forever to rot alongside his father, he’d decided to sneak out with one of his friends from university who told him there’d be a meteor shower that night.
a month later, after being haunted by his own dreams, he shrieked in pain as his bones broke themselves and his muscles tore themselves apart so a pair of wings could rip through his skin in a vicious cacophony of flesh. his healing hadn’t developed until after the first time, leaving behind two slices of scars between his shoulder blades where his wings had pushed through. they’d be the only scars that minhwan would keep after his powers developed. they would be the last thing his mother saw before she watched her son sprout honey colored wings and fly away forever without a word.
POST-MUTATION
v. give yourself over - you have nothing left to lose
he flies until he cannot anymore, his wings slowing until his feet touch the ground and he can feel his entire body slump into the grass before his vision blacks out. when he wakes, it’s two weeks later and he’s in a room of white and softness, someone speaking no louder than a whisper saying that a stranger found him on the side of the road, blah, blah, blah, he was taken to the hospital, blah, blah, ARC, blah, come with us?
he thought about his plans, what he was wanting to do after flying away from his mother. he’d thought about doing anything and everything - hitch-hiking, joining a circus, anything. yet the stranger pushes a newspaper into his hands where there’s a blurred picture of a man with wings that he recognizes as himself with the caption, “ANGEL?” and he knows he never wants to be anything that people think of as angelic. he has nothing to lose. he says yes.
he leaves the newspaper on the pillow of his hospital bed, a large ‘X’ over the five-letter word ‘angel’.
vi. you are not alone and yet completely.
minhwan is one of the first they bring to the ARC but no one would ever no that with how he hides himself away. the sky is the one place he feels safe as the wind brushes through his feathers and the sun shines in his face. he’s alone and yet he’s okay with it, his fingers outstretched as he can hear the familiar beat of his wings. nothing will ever compare and he tries to spend every waking moment he can, trying to perfect his flying under their command. they try to tell him to stay on the ground whenever new people arrive, carted in like cattle. it’s more person-to-person contact than what he’s used to. some of them are fine with keeping to themselves like him; others… are less so. they tell him about missions and teams and fighting crime one mission at a time.
they tell him to think about the world and how much it needs people like them, that he and his partner will be saving graces.
( he tries not to puke at how much it sounds like they want him to be an angel when he’s anything but. )

YU DAEKWAN – JUSTICE. AGENT 11.
                                                   [   FILE TYPE: CLASSIFIED   ]
//: LOADING PROFILE: YU DAEKWAN ...
international age: 22 birthplace: jeju, south korea arcana: justice team number: eleven
//: LOADING MUTATION: WING MANIFESTATION  ...
application one: enhanced endurance —   the best way daekwan knows to describe is that it’s like he operates in a low power setting. if a regular person needs a solid eight hours of rest daekwan is awake and alert after only five. he also needs far less food and water than the average person as he is able to sustain himself on a low amount of each. but the aspect of this that is in general most useful to him is that pain and stress also don’t affect him as much as the average person.
application two: regenerative healing factor — he can rapidly regenerate/recreate lost or damaged tissues or organs. this allows him to recover faster from damage that would take a normal person out for months or even from damage that could permanently affect the average human. it’s also the mechanism that allows him to call upon his wings and not permanently injure himself in doing so.
application three: flight — his wings aren’t just for looks they are actually capable of lifting him (as well as another person) and carrying him for long distances. this in combination with his other abilities allows him to fly as long as there is enough atmosphere for him to maintain his lift. due to him spending a lot of training he’s also able to fly for long distances and at high speeds making this the most useful method of traveling for daekwan.
overall strengths and weaknesses: — the need for things such as water, food and sleep are only reduced for daekwan not eliminated entirely. it takes longer for such things to catch up with him but when they do he suffers the same consequences that anyone else would. similarly he is not immune to pain or stress he only has a heightened tolerance for it. meaning if he were to be wounded in some manner it would still hurt, however, daekwan can tolerate a larger quantity of injuries as well as more serious injuries before it begins to really affect him. when it comes to his healing factor daekwan is not completely immune to damage. in fact he’s still wounded the same as any other person would be. and while he’s never exactly tested it a deadly injury such as a bullet through his brain would kill him the same as any other person. similarly if he sustains so many injuries in a short amount of time that his healing factor can’t “keep up” so to speak he will also be in mortal danger. and as of yet he also cannot recover lost limbs or organs. although daekwan can fly as high as any bird in order to not suffocate he has to stay low enough that there is still enough oxygen for him to breath and enough air for him to maintain lift. meaning he cannot fly beyond the earth’s atmosphere. and his wings when present are as much a part of his body as his fingers or his arm is meaning they sustain just as much damage as any other body part would. on the bright side this also means that he can strengthen the muscles in his wings in the same way he could build muscle in his legs and arms. another downside of his wings is that when present they are quite large (this of course because they need to full support him while he flies) meaning there are some places he simply can’t fit when he has his wings. this also means he needs to be mindful of where he is when he’s manifesting his wings because if the space is not large enough he’s liable to injure both himself and others.
//: LOADING HISTORY ..
PRE-MUTATION
I. his mother called him her little miracle. to her, a woman who struggled to concieve for years his life was a gift from the god she loved so much. and daekwan is her treasure. she loves him more than her husband, more than the god she claims gave her to him in the first place. and her love is suffocating in its intensity. he cannot seem to seperate himself from his mother, cannot seem to take one single step away from her to simply breathe.
II. his father disappears when daekwan is still young. ‘i’m going out to pick up dinner.’ he said. and his car pulled out of the driveway and never returned. his mother eventually cooks dinner for daekwan and sends him to bed, but he gets up in the middle of the night and goes to the front window, pressing his pudgy face and hands against the glass waiting for his father to return. he asks questions for days, weeks even. where’s daddy? when is daddy coming home? his mother never answers him, she simply tells him to stop asking questions.
III. there are girls who notice him now. they coo and titter at daekwan’s cold responses. they pretend he’s only playing hard to get, that one day he will turn around and sweep one of them off their feet. and daekwan? daekwan doesn’t dream of soft curves and pouty pink lips covered in gloss. daekwan doesn’t care for small hands and slight bodies. he’ll never admit to it but he wants something no girl can give him.
IV. he kisses a boy and regrets it. the boy is his friend (or was his friend), someone who daekwan though he might be able to trust. he gets punched for his daring. and it doesn’t take long for the whole school to find out that daekwan is gay. it doesn’t take long for the girls who had previously been so head over heels “in love” with him to start talking behind his back. it doesn’t take long for his schoolmates to turn their backs on him.
V. ‘tell me it’s not true, daekwan.’ she says. and once again daekwan feels suffocated. she’s asking him to deny who he is, no, she is begging him to deny it. demanding it of him. and daekwan, daekwan can only bend to her will. ‘it’s not true, mama.’ he says, ever the obedient son. she pulls him close and tells him she knew it wasn’t true, she tells him she knew her miracle (her treasure, her gift from god, hers) could never be something so disgusting and sinful. daekwan tries to swallow the bile he feels rising in his throat when she calls him her miracle. he tries so hard to be what his mother wants him to be after that. they don’t talk about the incident after that, she simply transfers him to a different school and daekwan finishes his last year in high school without much fanfare.
VI. he starts university right on time studying medicine because it’s what his mother wanted. and then he develops feelings for his roommate. at first daekwan tries to ignore it but then it becomes obvious that the feelings are mutual and daekwan only wants to be happy so he starts a relationship.
POST-MUTATION
VII. he hasn’t heard anything about the meteor shower. he is simply on the roof of his apartment building trying not to cry. he was tired of being what his mother wanted him to be and he told her as much. the slap he had gotten for his trouble throbs in the cool night air. and for a moment, a tenth of a second really, he considers jumping off the roof. the next thing he knows he can see meteors falling, twinkling as they do and then there is a brief but blinding flash of light.
VIII. the dream he has later in the week is almost painfully vivid. the deep and varied greens of the forest nearly burning to look at. if he reaches out to touch a branch he can actually feel the bark of the tree against the palm of his hand. he wakes up to the same cold reality that he left when he closed his eyes. his back itches.
IX. he’s on the roof of his apartment building again. and this time the thought is not fleeting. he has everything squared away, a note tucked into his pocket for the police to find, his apartment cleaned and organized for whoever takes over his estate. it’s all ready for this. daekwan jumps and there is blinding pain. not from hitting the ground, but rather it starts near his shoulder blades and spreads across his entire back like liquid fire. and before he knows it he is flying, it’s a clunky and awkward kind of flight but it’s enough to get him to the roof of a building farther down the street. when he lands and inspects the wings that have so suddenly sprouted from his back daekwan only has the strength to laugh when he sees the feathers are a deep, inky black color.
X. it isn’t surprise when they came for him. what is a surprise is that they come not ready to subdue him and torture him, but with pretty words and kind promises. they want to help him they say. daekwan agrees to their proposition but only because he has no where else left to go.
XI. he trains. and trains. and trains. they came offering promises to help him and they follow through on their promises. sometimes daekwan wonders if there’s more to this than they let on, but he completes the missions they give him all the same. and yet still in the back of his mind he knows that things don’t simply come for free.
