There had been some really uncomfortable dinners at the Yashvardhan estate in recent times. About a year ago, Ben was bracing himself for his first dinner here as Jhanvi’s boyfriend to break the news to the family that they were official and that it was just something that they were going to have to get used to. He honestly remembered that evening as being rather pleasant. Of course, her mother had a few interesting comments to make, but after his private conversation with her father Ben felt like the evening had been rather successful for the pair. Along the way, things became easier, their relationship and their bond became more normalized and commonplace. It wasn’t awkward to wrap his arm around her shoulders while they visited in the den or hold her hand while they lounged in the gardens at tea. 

Tonight, however Ben wished he had the flu just so he could get out of attending this Yashavrdhan family dinner. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to see Rohit, Kiran’s boyfriend. No, he was good people and he was happy that the other man was back in town. It was another guest that was going to be in attendance that had Ben’s stomach turning. The uninvited one… Yes, Arjun had somehow returned to Kingston to make everyone’s life a living hell once more and for some weird reason the Yashvardhan’s decided keeping him around like some poor stray animal was a better choice than just cutting him loose. 

As Benjamin entered the foyer of the large Yashvardhan residence, Jhanvi’s hand clasped in his own, he found himself wondering what this Arjun was going to do. From what he’d heard, Arjun was quite charismatic and that’s how he had won Jhanvi over in the first place. He only hoped that the former fiance didn’t have any lingering hopes and that during the course of the meal and the evening tonight, he kept his stupid mouth shut for the sake of everyone’s sanity. Somehow, that seemed incredibly unlikely, but he had to hope. “Hi Di. Ben,” Dev approached them, “Kaise ho bhai?” The blond man offered Jhanvi’s younger brother a confused look and an awkward smile at which Devraj only chuckled, “Come on man, you gotta learn some Hindi.” The clearly white man only sighed dramatically and grinned, “It’s kind of nice to live in a state of ignorant bliss.”

RADHA SIKANDAR [Status: NPC]

72 Years | Head of House Sikandar | Portrayed by Rekha

Radha had wed into the affluent House Sikandar, slowly biding her time in the background, tongue held. While her husband had been the previous head of the family, competent enough, she'd managed the business affairs for him, tirelessly ensuring their continued success throughout the length of their long marriage. In the time after the Great War, her husband has since passed, and instead of passing the baton to her children, Radha wields it for herself, taking over as interim Head. Though her children would never declare it, they are enraged—for Radha was never a doting or loving mother, choosing stricture and censure instead, and she will run the House and its businesses with the same iron fist.

DIVYA SIKANDAR [Status: Available]

39 Years | Open Occupation | Portayed by Shilpa Shetty

As the eldest daughter, Divya was never meant for the crown, even though her own mother has defied tradition. Instead, she was married off at a young age to the eldest Ladon son, Lucius, in an attempt to broker peace. Despite the alliance, there was no avoiding the advent of the Great War. While a daughter and a son were born to them, Lucius believed it was his duty to join the effort—and perished as a result, leaving Divya a widow with two small children.

But her children are grown now, and so she is left to her own devices, wondering how she might contribute in her own way. She views the Ladons as antiquated, a family clinging too much to tradition, sightless to the power that is being leeched beneath them and oblivious to what the future may hold. Convinced that Caelum Ladon is unfit to lead, she plots, vying for her own son, Hemant, to be named as the next heir. Such a takeover would be unheard of, but Divya continues to lobby the Consortium for a vote and, more importantly, she is not above the act of bribery.

DEVRAJ SIKANDAR [Status: Available]

45 Years | Financial Manager | Portrayed by Arjun Rampal 

As the eldest son of the Sikandar family, Devraj expected to be the next Head of his house. So, it comes as an unwelcome surprise—a shock—that his mother would carry the torch instead, refusing to bend to the will of societal expectation and the limitations of her age. Reluctant and resentful, he is given her old responsibility of managing the family’s business relationships and financial portfolio as he watches her take what should have been his seat at the Consortium. For all his bluster and grandiose plans of growing the house at an unprecedented rate, Devraj is not adept at his role, and with the sudden discovery of terra victus on Tartarus, he may suddenly risk the toppling of his house of cards.

JIE SIKANDAR [Status: Available]

43 Years | Socialite | Portrayed by Li Bingbing

Hailing from the Caishen family, Jie married into the major house for mutual benefit: for the Caishens to strengthen their mining ties, and for the Sikandars to establish a relationship with the Lazarevici. But there is no such thing as paradise in a political marriage, and she has little patience for her husband’s persistent grousing of being spurned as the next head. With business acumen of her own, she considers overtaking the duties that have been bestowed on him, but she loves her life the way it is: easy and uncomplicated, which will only remain that way if she stays uninvolved.

DURGA SIKANDAR [Status: Taken]

34 Years | Khandava University Board Member | Portrayed by Deepika Padukone

As the last and unexpected child of the Sikandars, Durga was given the most freedom in her pursuits. Such opportunity, however, comes with a price, for she was simultaneously ignored, left to carve her own path for herself. Given her interests in science and engineering, she serves on the board of directors for Khandava University, continuously searching for the next big thing that might further the name of her family. It is the most precious thing to her, her family, held before all, and for them she has reluctantly agreed to be betrothed to Rakesh Haya.

It was the day after the charity gala and just about an hour after Ben had finally left her place, rather unwillingly, though she’d done her part in convincing him to stay as well. That’s when her door bell rang and she answered it, a bright smile on her face assuming it was the blond man back again deciding that maybe he didn’t want to leave after all.

But that wasn’t the case.

Instead she saw Amrita Yashvardhan there standing in her doorway. “Hi Maa.” Jhanvi greeted her, and ushered her in, her nerves already on edge given what Ben had confessed last night about Amrita having seen the two of them together. She knew that’s what had brought her mother over because this wasn’t even the first time that the Yashvardhan matriarch had to warn her daughter against her rather obvious advances against the mayor. But Jhanvi wasn’t going to let her mother know yet that she was aware of the talk Ben and her had right after Jhanvi left, instead—she was going to think that for once, her mother had come over to check on her daughter.

“Let me see your arm,” her voice was soft and rather matronly while Jhanvi outstretched her arm. The bruise had formed a lot more this morning and she was furious about it, so much so that she was ready to go after Jeffrey herself but was controlling the urge, aware of how bad it could get. “It looks a lot worse than it is,” she told her mother—almost hoping for an apology.

But it didn’t seem like Amrita was in the mood just yet. And before Jhanvi could even realize it, her mother had ventured into the kitchen probably to help herself to something when she’d spotted the two mugs in the sink. “Itne savere—kaun tha yahaan?”

The words were spoken so casually that if Jhanvi didn’t know better, she’d think her mother was just asking in a relaxed manner, but she knew her mother a lot better than that. “Aapko saach sun na hai, ya jhoot?” Besides, her mother had pretty much thankfully never spoken to Jhanvi about her affairs or such and while Jhanvi was hoping this would go along the same tracks, she knew in the past she'd never given her a reason to ask.

“Mujhe kuch sun na nahi hai,” she turned to her daughter and cupped her cheek. Anyone else watching would think this was a motherly action, but Jhanvi knew better. “You know Jhanvi, I always prided myself on having you as a daughter. I thought ke agar koi meri jagah le sakhta hai iss poore karobar mein—toh woh tum thi, lekin afsos—you’ve disappointed me yet again.”

Her eyes lowered as she waited for her mother to continue. She hated how easy it was for this woman to cut Jhanvi down in seconds, breaking down whatever it was she had been working towards achieving. "Did you really think I wouldn’t find out? Do you take me for a fool?” Jhanvi simply stared at her mother. “I have no idea what you're talking about Maa," she responded, waiting to see just where her mother would take this.

Amrita scoffed and shook her head, her hand retracted from her daughter’s cheek. “Just as I thought. He can spend the night with you, but conveniently forget to tell you that he and I had a little chat,” her words were said with venom in her voice and Jhanvi took a deep breath has she waited to hear what else Amrita said. “Did you really think no one would’ve noticed ke tum dono itni der ke liye akele bahar the? Do you think no one realized ke tumhare peeche peeche woh bhi aaya tha? Aur of course usko toh poori choot ji uski woh biwi jo nahi thi uske haath pakarne ke liye. Aur tum bhi—you came with a date and maybe if you’d just—“

“If I’d what? If I’d stayed with Jeffrey he wouldn’t have drank so much? Is that what you’re trying to say Maa? That it’s my fault he chose to get drunk like that and try to drag me around? Don’t…just don’t say it. Warna saach mein…” she trailed off before taking a deep breath. “Aur waise, jaisa ke aap soch rahi hai, waisa kuch nahi hai..” she started saying before her mother interjected again.

“Don't take me for a fool Jhanvi. I’m not an idiot. He had you driven home in his car. He left a little while after. And the way he jumped to your defence with your brothers…don’t think I didn’t notice the way the two of you looked at one another…it’s really disgraceful, aisi parvarish nahi di thi maine tujhe.”

“Maa—stop it. Just listen to me for a second.”

“Kya sunana chahti hai tu? Ke aisa kuch nahi hai? Tum dono sirf dost ho? Please Jhanvi. Saaf saaf dikhai deta hai. He’s using you..aur kuch nahi. He’s having his little affair with you while staying married to her, and you—like an idiot are going along with it. Saach mein tumse yeh umeed nahi thi mujhe Jhanvi. I admit you made a mistake with Arjun…but to go after a married man like this..it’s despicable.”

“He and I aren’t—I don’t even know what I’m supposed to say to you. Firstly, it’s my life, aur meri zindagi mein jo kuch bhi ho raha hai—usse main khud sambhal lungi. It has nothing to do with you. And for your information, he did tell me about your so-called chat. So you saw us…great. I admit that shouldn’t have happened there where anyone could walk in. But this is our life,”

“Your life? Jhanvi woh shaadishuda hai, aur tum—pagalon ki tarah kabse uske peeche pari hui ho…zaara bhi sharam nahi hai kya tum mein? Meri hi kismat mein saare baache mujhe sirf badnaam karne ke liye hain. Ek taraf tu aisi hai, aur tera woh chota bhai, aur phir Kiran jo ke kuch samajna hi nahi chahti, saare ke saare mujhe hi takleef de raahe ho. Except for Devraj.”

Jhanvi couldn’t help the scoff that escaped her at that. “Sure Maa, jo bhi aap kaahe. Main buri hoon woh toh mujhe pata hai, aur Krishna—kabhi aapne usse baat bhi ki hai? Ke usne woh sab kyun kiya? Aap jaanti bhi hai ke Papa ne usse maaf kyun kiya? Kyunke Papa ne at least usse baat karne ki koshish toh ki, poocha ke Krishna ne aisa kyun kiya…aapne toh woh bhi—you were always just too busy for that.”

“Jhanvi, stop it. Don't start giving me all of this. Hum yahaan iss waqt tumhari baat kar rahe hai.”

“Actually Maa—I think we’re done talking. You’ve made your point very clear and while I get why you’re being cautious in your own way—but truly, main jaanti hoon unhe, and I know I’m not making a mistake.”

It didn’t go over Amrita’s head that her daughter had actually referred to the mayor in such a way, but she wasn’t going to draw attention to it at this point. It was clear her words and warnings were having no affect on her daughter and Amrita Yashvardhan never wasted another minute where her opinions and learnings weren’t valued.

“Don’t come crying to me when this all blows up in your face, just like last time.”

And for her mother to leave her with those parting words—it was the worst thing she could feel. Not only did she get reminded at how much she had disappointed the woman, but to know that she believed Jhanvi had no judgement of anything in her life and this was all going to hell—it hurt in a lot of ways even if she wasn’t going to admit it to the other woman or anyone else.

Ordinarily, this was the type of thing she’d tell Devraj about it..but given how now her talks were somehow connected to Ben—she knew she was on her own and this time—that realization actually hurt a bit. She had heard her brother tell her that he was on her side no matter what—but it was still too soon given how Devraj still believed that Ben was simply taking her for a ride, no one would understand what was actually happening between them until the divorce was publicized, but she also knew that would take such a toll on him that she still had no idea how things were going to go then.

It would inevitably be them both standing side by side, taking each day as it came.
