Oklahoma has a new type of sod on Owen Field, Tahoma 31.   I'm excited.

This past year the grass  on the Super Bowl surface was horrible.  Players were slipping; many were changing cleats trying to get better traction.  It was easy to see big clumps of grass ripped up.  That grass was Tahoma 31, but don't worry, it wasn't Tahoma 31's fault.  The field was awful because of horrible turf management by those in charge.  More on this later.*

There are numerous improvements in the grass over previous hybrid strains of Bermuda.

I was fortunate to speak with one of the two creators of this grass, Yanqi Wu, a professor at Oklahoma State.  OSU has a long history of developing new turf hybrids.  An ironic side note, Lewis Field where OSU plays football has for many decades used artificial turf; they don't use real grass.

Below Professor Wu's scientific explanation of the turf's properties. Prior to the interview I had read the turf properties and made wrong assumptions about its performance.  So now the turf improvements and what they mean explained by Professor Wu.

Tensile Strength - related to sod stability and how much force is required to separate the sod.  Practically means surface is more resistant to traffic.  Also means sod stays more connected and less damaged in harvesting and moving.

Freeze resistant - Not an issue for OU because we are so far south Bermuda isn't threatened.  The advantage is for Northern states where harsh winters freeze the turf so hard it is dead in the spring. The Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs play on Tahoma 31.

Unfortunately, freeze resistant does not mean the grass will continue to be green and growing later into the fall. Tahoma 31 will go dormant at the same temperatures as other varieties of Bermuda 40° F.

We will still have Rye Grass planted on the field and ll.  Bad because rye is a lslick surface and players slip on it.

Tahoma 31 is very compact - shorter distance between internodes and stolens (this paraphrase could be very very wrong). Stolons are horizontal growths that  are above ground  and arched. Nodes are  vertical anchors between the stolons.  So compaction is shorter distances between blades of grass - more grass per sq. Ft.

* The Super Bowl turf was horrible because of multiple mistakes in turf management. The entire field at this stadium rolls outside to get sun and water. (Yes, all 100 plus yards rolls outside). 2023 superbowl the field was outside and watered. But they didn't allow the usual amount of time for the water to evaporate. They rolled the wet field back inside. Things got much worse. Trying to protect the field while half time shows, pregame etc.. practiced a huge tarp was placed over the field. This tarp sealed in the water and caused the turf to begin to rot. Yes, the smell of rot is how some described it. That's how the super bowl was placed - on a wet, mushy, rotting field.

When Zhao Yunlan opened his eyes, the first thing that came to his mind was that old quote of 'we are not in Kansas anymore' but there was absolutely no one to share the reference with - Shen Wei was gone.

Or rather, Zhao Yunlan was gone, because the forest he was now in didn't resemble anything he had seen in any of his lives. Definitely not anything near the Dragon City, or even their world for that matter. As a freshly returned god of nature, Zhao Yunlan could feel the foreignness of the plants around him. The trees, the grass, the bushes: they all looked familiar, but felt anything but.

And they did not want to gossip with Yunlan, which was a weird change after getting all of the hot drama from the neighbour's willows.

"Shen Wei?" Zhao Yunlan tried, but the nice, unreal forest only gave him animal sounds in reply.

Right. Another world, different rules, no Shen Wei. Not the best circumstances, but at least Zhao Yunlan had no trouble with figuring out his priority objective: he was almost certain that Shen Wei was also somewhere here, and probably wiser in the way of Weird Artifacts.

Walking through the Odd Forest, Zhao Yunlan couldn't help but recall some of the treks he and Da Qing used to go on, if carrying a fat cat on one's back counted as trekking together. Still, despite the complaints and demands of food, those trips had certain charm to them. They should take Shen Wei on one of those when they get back from the Mirror verse or whatever this was.

But first - he had to find Shen Wei.

Ignoring the local fauna serenading him from all the sides, Zhao Yunlan walked on, looking for a familiar waistcoat or maybe a tell-tale black robe, in case Shen Wei decided to get serious and terrorise the mirror into letting them go.

Nothing.

Zhao Yunlan was not worried enough not to notice the fact that the time didn't seem to pass around him - the sun stayed in the same place no matter how long and in which direction he went, there was also no change of scent - the flowers and the trees all had that slightly artificial note to them, like the scented candles smelling of 'fairy forest' or whatever the whimsy names were.

Sitting on the nearest rock, Zhao Yunlan decided to see if his lack of movement would change anything. The forest around him didn't seem to care much whether he moved or not, it clearly had its own agenda that didn't include Zhao Yunlan at all. Good thing it didn't try to fight him, at least.

As he remained there, pondering on the world's attitude towards him, there was a rustle coming from the bushes to the left.

It had been a bit too calm around here, Zhao Yunlan thought to himself, searching his jacket for the gun or the talismans. There was nothing.

Gearing himself up to talk his way out of trouble, Yunlan turned towards the noise and froze.

"Shen Wei?"

"How do you know my name?" The person looking like Shen Wei asked, blinking at Yunlan with true wonder. Dressed in a typical 'scholar from the thirties' get up, with the white shirt and a black waistcoat, this Shen Wei seemed just like Yunlan's one - he dressed like Shen Wei, sounded like Shen Wei, he also blushed like Shen Wei. And he was definitely blushing now, growing slightly redder with each moment.

Not able to help himself, Zhao Yunlan leaned back on the rock and gave Shen Wei a flirty smile.

"Well, I dreamed you up, beautiful, why wouldn't I know your name," he said, mostly joking. But instead of becoming even more flustered, local Shen Wei's expression changed into surprise.

"Is that true?" He asked eagerly, the naked hope in his eyes making it impossible for Zhao Yunlan to admit it to be a joke.

"One of my favourite dreams." Now local Shen Wei blushed, finally.

"I dreamt about you too."

An alarm sounded in Zhao Yunlan's mind. The weird forest, Shen Wei who did not remember him but dreamed about him, the freaking mirror reacting to a quote from a fairy tale... Impossible, really, but Zhao Yunlan watched too many movies not to pick up on some references.

"You weren't cursed by an angry fairy, were you, Shen Wei?"

The man in front of him blinked in confusion.

"No?"

Alright, so Yunlan made a bit of a fool of himself, not a new occurrence and at least -

"But there is a cursed place in this forest, it pulls everyone into a slumber they cannot be woken from."

Well, fuck. One point for Zhao Yunlan after all.

"Listen, do you think -"

Suddenly, Shen Wei jolted in front of him, as if poked by an invisible stick.

"I am being summoned, I have to go," he said, his gaze focused, clearly listening to whatever the summon entailed. "I hope to see you again."

Black clouds covered the sun in seconds, just as Shen Wei's figure dissolved into a black smoke, a shape of dark robe and an eerie staff appeared for a moment in front of Yunlan's eyes before disappearing completely.

"Damn it," Zhao Yunlan muttered to himself, looking up at the now cheerfully sunny sky. "That's one messy fairy tale you have here," he informed the forest around him, but there was no reply at all.

With a sigh, Zhao Yunlan got up from the rock and set off to find Shen Wei again. Or to find the cursed cave. Or maybe an heir to the throne on their way to said cave.
