ATOMATO TOMATI?!?! TOMATO

when i was a tiny baby queer (aka a 24-year-old), i went to my first pride festival probably three months after i kicked ex-gay therapy to the curb and came out to my parents. being the people they are, my parents came with me. they weren’t really sure about this whole gay thing, but they loved me and wanted me to be safe and happy and wanted to be involved in what was important to me, so they came along. (i also think my mother still might have thought i might get drugged or murdered or beaten by a protester of which there were plenty.)

anyway i wanted a memento of my first pride, you know, and this one vendor was selling keyrings, and i liked it, so i bought one. do you remember those italian charm bracelets that were all the rage like 10-15 years ago? it was a keychain like that, and it had a rainbow rooster, a rainbow cat, and then just a rainbow, and so I bought it.

i run into my mom a couple of vendors over and she goes oh you bought something? what’d you get? so i showed her, and i was like, “I’m not sure why it’s a rooster and a cat. Seems kind of random. But I liked the rainbows.”

and my mom, who was some form of minister’s wife for most of my childhood and teenagerhood, stares at me like she thinks i’m joking.

“What?” i say.

“…it’s a cock and a pussy, Jules,” she says flatly, and that is the story of how i died at the age of 24 while attending my first pride festival.

Any tips on container growing tomatoes? I just got a Champion II because it was labelled as a patio tomato, but I would love to hear other recs!! All I know is that I need a Very large pot.

1. The Bigger the container you can give your tomato, the better.  A tomato lives and dies by it’s root system, so the bigger and healthier it’s roots, the better.

Champion II is not actually a ‘Patio’ tomato- kind of the opposite!  Patio tomatoes are Determinate (tomatoes that grow to a certain size and stop), Champion II is an Inderterminate tomato that will keep growing as long as it has space.  This does have some advantages though:  Indeterminate tomatoes have a longer fruiting period- once it starts, it can keep making tomatoes until it gets too cold.  Champion II also look like a medium-to-beefy sized tomato, but it’s planting-to-fruiting period is 65 Days, which is a bit short so stay on top of fertilizing it or the flavor might come out a bit weak.

2. But!  You have a tomato! So, get the biggest pot you can (I reccomend the big plastic tubs you can get at walmart or the like because they’re cheap and huge), poke a few holes in the bottom, cover the bottom with weed cloth to keep the dirt from running out the holes when you water it, and fill it with Potting soil.  Once your Baby tomato is at least 8 inches tall, snap off the two bottom leaves and bury it to about 1.5 inches from the bottom of the new-lowest leaves.  This will encourage it to grow a big healthy root system.  Water at least once a day, keep in full sun.  65 days after your plant it, you should have your first ripe tomatoes!

3. Fertilization: Ireccomend breaking an egg and crumpling the shell at the bottom of the hole when you plant the tomato.  If you think you’re going to have pests like Squirrels digging it up, you might instead use a calcium-rich tomato food (Fox farm makes a good one with a huge bottle I’m still using three years later) to avoid blossom end rot and sad tomatoes with no flavor.

4. tomatoes like 6 or more hours of direct sunlight, but if the temps are going to be over 95 or the tomato is gettin closer to 8 hours, it might need a shade at the hottest points of the day.  You can use a regular umbrella, or a sheet on a stick.

5. Once the tomato starts blooming, be a little mean to it.  Miss a watering. break off a branch that isn’t flowering.  let it get hailed on a bit.  the threat of death makes tomatoes horny and make more flowers and better fruits. If your tomato is more than 4 feet tall above ground and hasn’t started blooming, you’re being too nice to it.

6. With an Indeterminate aTomato, you’re going to need to support it physically even if you’re emotionally torturing it (it’s a masochist, it loves it)-  A tomato cage is a must, but if it’s really happy you might need to be propping it up with a trelis or tying it’s dumb ass to the gutter to keep it collapsing
