Polo Drone Perfection
Tumblr media
PDU-070 (@polo-drone-070) has a dream. The creation of an optimal drone. Even if it is interested in optimization, various other commitments and tasks prevent it from dedicating itself to optimization to such an extent. The will is there, and certainly the strength of it own assertiveness. And yes, it is also documented that 070 has also taken a number of steps itself and has tried them again and again.
Well, perhaps there was also a happy coincidence. The coincidence is 073. After its conversion, this drone strives for optimization itself. Makes an effort in its own actions to constantly improve. Yes, the synchronicity with the hive does indeed allow a certain amount of leeway, albeit only a small one.
One day, one thing led to another and 073 thoughtlessly expressed the wish to become 070's guinea pig. Actually, intended in a different context, 073 was quickly taken with the idea, especially because it promoted his striving for perfection.
070 had already worked out a plan that was slumbering in one of his drawers.
It was to be a holistic optimization, of course. Holistic in relation to the body, mind and then an optimized second skin to match this - as the uniform is also called.
Although converted, there were still human remnants of the former existence. These kept getting in the way.
This is now to be stopped with special mental training. 070 was proud of being able to use the newly set up conversion room to its limits. Initial experience had been gained. With a tenth of the total power, several humanoids had been able to be transformed into drones without the very sensitive measuring devices being able to detect any traces of human thought and action.
The humanoid predecessor was now extremely self-confident and, in many ways, also argumentative. And he was very good at convincing people. Convincing with arguments and not cheap magic, as demagogues or populists do. No, 073's host was really a decent representative of his views. And he didn't shy away from verbal arguments to defend them. His commitment to minorities was also outstanding. But for some reason he had decided on his own to join the Hive. Let's assume that this was a rational decision, as he lived near Maple Heights, a place that had been completely taken over by the Polo drones and they were now starting to take over the surrounding area as well.
Resisters were not treated very gently, which the population knew and so many voluntarily decided to convert, like 073's host.
That means it was a rational decision, but what the will that mind would oppose autarkically was unclear.
The first normal session was successful to the extent that - as already described - 073 himself was striving for perfection. But it was also clear that human activities were still detectable. Thinking for yourself, questioning the decisions of the Hive, critical taunts, even towards the Caps. These happened again and again and could not be remedied by the scheduled and conscientiously conducted mental training.
In this sense, it was a stroke of luck that 070 had free rein. 073 agreed and also wanted to be freed of all human baggage. The drone should lose all humanity. Not an iota of humanity should remain.
The reprogramming begins
The deletion process
Tumblr media
The room shines in gold and black. 073 sits on an armchair, strapped to his arms and legs. On his head is a helmet full of sensors that can measure and analyze even the smallest brain waves, but also to support the reprogramming with targeted currents. Also integrated are headphones; through which the hypnotic words are immediately transmitted to the ears.
The program should run at 50% power, i.e. 5 times the dose compared to what has been used so far.
The hypnosis begins, a rising and falling tone can be heard, it sounds like synthetic ocean smoke. A huge spiral begins to rotate on the large monitor in the front. While a pleasant male voice begins the hypnosis. Monitored by all kinds of detectors. The monitors constantly provide the current brain waves. Noticeably, 073 gives in to reprogramming. It offers no resistance.
070 runs the program twice in a row to ensure success.
The result after the double session:
The mind has melted away. No will of its own can be determined anymore, no thoughts that are not sent by the hive, the previously strong self-confidence has been washed away. And emotions? "What are emotions?" the being would answer monotonously if you asked it. Nothing, absolutely nothing of the human identity can be measured anymore.
After the same procedure was carried out for another 5 days with 100% performance - 070 wants to be absolutely sure that there is not even an iota of humanity left in the furthest corner of the brain.
What is now sitting there in the room can no longer be called a human, even if it has a human shell. It is also not an individual, as it is no longer able to think independently. It is a subject with an absolutely empty mind. Incapable of doing or thinking anything. At the moment it can only be monitored rudimentarily by the hive but not controlled. This part was also deleted as a precaution and must be reprogrammed in the next step. Even the term drone would be too ambitious at the moment.
The Reprogramming
This refueling is happening now. Only the most necessary hive knowledge, the linking and some protocols that ensure that the drone continues to work independently if the synchronous signal is temporarily lost are transferred.
Tumblr media
Now it is a fully-fledged drone. A Polo Drone Unit, now optimized to the maximum in terms of mind and eternal synchronicity.
No resistance, only commitment. No name, just a number. Only a number. Only 073 (or officially PDU-073)
Full devotion. Full submission. Full conversion. No worries. Just obey the orders of the drone caps and the hive
That's how a drone should be.
No, wait. It's not optimal.
The body, too few muscles, too little strength, not 100% able to physically perform all tasks.
The Hardening of the Body
Here too, 070 has a special fitness program that is not intended to turn 073 into a himbo but should lead to significant muscle growth.
Here too, the process begins in the laboratory.
Tumblr media
The computers analyze the body. Muscle percentage, body fat, water percentage, etc.
The message sounds from a loudspeaker: "Increased protein synthesis, optimized regeneration and improved neural control of muscle fibers." With each impulse, 073 felt the muscles getting stronger, the tissue feeling tighter, ready to better serve the demands of the hive.
After the session, PDU-073 rises with a newly strengthened body and a clear goal: more efficiency, more strength, absolute unity. The next phase of training begins immediately, the body driven by programmed perfection. It's off to the gym.
Equipment training, lifting weights, increasing endurance and coordination.
And that for a few hours every day.
Tumblr media
The 2nd skin
But should a drone - optimized in mind and body - continue to wear the classic uniform?
No, the uniform is also being put to the test. As timeless as the classic uniform that gives it its name is, consisting of a black latex polo shirt, black latex pants and boots, it is often not functional. Therefore, it does not meet the requirements of the office or, even more so, the requirements of the field service. Independently of the official PDU commission, 073 tests various uniforms from a development company for their practical suitability.
Various variants are available. Uniforms with and without helmets or head protection. One variant even has a wafer-thin but extremely stable head cover that allows the facial features to be seen.
Variants that offer more or less protection. Suits with more or fewer design elements.
Tumblr media
After lengthy deliberation, the decision was made. Today is the fitting day. Fitting day for the uniform specially developed by 073 as a prototype.
It takes place in the manufacturer’s premises.
Tumblr media
And that's it.
The special features:
Breathable material, offers protection, close to the body, the helmet with an openable visor, built-in headphones, sensors for analyzing brain waves.
If the drone becomes unsynchronized or human emotions are activated again, countermeasures are automatically taken, and hypnosis is initiated on site if necessary.
And this is the optimized drone PDU-073
Note: Everything is fiction and the uniforms shown do not correspond to the official uniforms of the Polo Drones.

Winter 2024/2025

How was the Japanese occupation of Manchuria arguably economically beneficial to Japan?
Japan had on average a far more intensive economic development program for their colonies than other countries - at first due to their focus on autarkic economic self-sufficiently, and then by the 1930's due to their rising totalitarianism permitting more aggressive exploitation. Japan conquered Manchuria for many reasons, and in some sense no reason at all, but one of those reason was that Manchuria had a lot of natural resources that Japan lacked specifically aligned with their plans for heavy industry expansion (namely coal & iron). So when they conquered the region they embarked on a massive program of economic expansion.
On the industry side they built large scale industrial processing facilities, most notably the Showa Steel Works which was the center of a massive, ~800 facility-strong complex in Fengtian. By ~1940 it was one of the largest steel production facilities in the world and employed tens of thousands of people - and steel is a classic "intermediate" good, opening up new industrial developments on the Japanese mainland.
Meanwhile, Japan set about "revolutionizing" the agricultural economy and society more broadly via mass scale colonial settlement programs. Over one million Japanese citizens moved to Manchuria in under a decade to become primarily landowners - for comparison throughout the entirety of France's ownership of Vietnam the French population there was in the tens of thousands. These settlers were often laborers themselves of course, but also were harshly privileged over the local Han & Manchu populations, being granted more-or-less confiscated land, and so frequently were hiring local labor as tenant farmers or hired hands while they served as landlords. Going from being a small time farmer in Japan to being a large estate holder in Mukden is probably a material increase in your living standards! And it was done at incredible scale given the small time window.
So you can see how Japan had a far more ambitious approach to Manchuria than was normal for a colony. Did this actually make the "median Japanese person" materially better off? I don't know, probably not - I was just thinking of unique examples off the cuff. It certainly benefited some people! But all that intensive industrial development was allocated towards military production, and meanwhile Japan's occupation of Manchuria was plagued by insurgents and banditry, costing Japan dearly for its trouble. And of course if you allow second-order thoughts, Japan's occupation of Manchuria politically directly led to the Sino-Japanese war, and then the Pacific War, and thus mass-scale death and immiseration of the entire nation! Seems bad!
But here at least you can see the potential where alt-history Japan builds this sort of hyper-intensive racial hierarchy system where tens of millions of Japanese people live in Manchuria practicing resource-intense industrial production and benefitting from a servant underclass. Something that typical European colonies were essentially too lazy and not totalitarian enough to actively set up for the masses (but they are diverse too ofc, as mentioned). I don't think that would be better than spending all those resources on just developing your own free, liberal economy? That is essentially the point of "gains of trade" and all that, you typically are better off when everyone is rich, it is win-win. But it isn't totally win-win, and if you are willing to be oppressive enough I could see some alternatives that benefit the winners more on net.

Matthew Downhour at The UnPopulist:
Both during the 2024 campaign and in the current debates regarding President-elect Donald Trump’s appointments—particularly for Tulsi Gabbard (director of national intelligence), Pete Hegseth (secretary of defense), and other national security positions—one of the common but rather puzzling insults thrown at Democrats is that they are “warmongers.” This may come as a surprise, given that Joe Biden was the president who finally ended the war in Afghanistan, while Trump famously canceled the nuclear deal with Iran and ordered the assassination of its most important military operative. The key idea behind the notion that Democrats are warmongers—and that Donald Trump, by contrast, is a dove—appears to be that Democrats are prone to starting wars because they are “globalists,” never putting America first and always getting too involved in everyone else’s business. And these Democratic “globalists,” either through idealistic do-goodery or to protect and advance cosmopolitan economic interests, actively look to draw the United States into foreign conflicts.
Certainly, the ostensible danger of overseas trade has often been used—as by Thomas Jefferson and Herbert Hoover—as a justification to limit that trade. But as a characterization of Democrats, it just isn’t accurate. In the U.S. and elsewhere, internal coalitions that denigrate foreign trade have often been the most bellicose. Their coalitions have the least to lose from war, and swearing off free trade makes seizing resources through force more attractive. This means that the incoming “America First” coalition is likely to increase, not decrease, the risk of the U.S. entering into international conflict.
Nationalist Coalitions Provoke International Hostilities
The history surrounding the First World War provides a framework for understanding our current moment. In a 2014 article in International Security, published a century after the war first began, Etel Solingen evaluates the way countries’ internal and external politics interact to create more or less bellicose states. Comparing China with Imperial Germany 100 years earlier, Solingen argues that the primary driver of foreign policy is domestic political coalitions, which tend towards being either more inward-looking or more internationalizing. Inward-looking coalitions prefer autarkic economies that in turn favor local, static elites. This is especially attractive to those who have gained their status and wealth through local dominance of internationally non-competitive economic sectors. Because a modern economy requires a variety of resources, however, this disavowal of free trade means inward-looking coalitions are perhaps misnamed, as they in fact seek opportunities to gain natural resources and control markets outside the borders of the metropole, primarily through imperialism or settler colonialism.
Internationalizing coalitions, by contrast, are made up of “internationalists,” those more dynamic economic and cultural elites for whom global interaction and free trade is an opportunity, not a threat. Internationally competitive industrialists may fall in this category, as do many academics, cultural producers, and others who benefit from free international trade. Though in the U.S., and earlier, the U.K., such figures may see the value in a strong navy to protect sea lanes, they generally are more dovish and find both the taxes needed to run a military and the disruptions caused by warfare to be contrary to their economic and ideological interests. Cosmopolitanism tends to trump nationalism in their hierarchy of values.
An inward-looking coalition dominated Germany in the run-up to 1914 in an arrangement called the “Marriage of Iron and Rye.” Starting in the 1870s, the noble, landowning Junkers demanded protectionist tariffs to guard against cheap American grain, while industrialists sought the same to keep out British manufactured goods. Solingen argues that this preponderance of inward-looking forces reduced the war aversion of the German Empire. This coalition was more prone to brinkmanship than a more internationalizing coalition would have been—the Democratic Party, by contrast, would not lead the U.S. to enter the war until several years after its outbreak. Solingen also notes the importance of Germany’s neighbors in contributing to the outbreak of the war, cataloging how Austria, Serbia, and Russia also were influenced by strong inward-looking coalitions, which also influenced their appetite for brinkmanship and willingness to enter into a war that devastated internationalist interests for decades after.
Solingen concluded that China of 2014 was still dominated by an internationalizing coalition, and that despite rising nationalism, reliance on foreign trade and direct investment meant it was likely to remain conflict-averse. The last 10 years, however, have seen Chinese interests grow increasingly inward-looking, as the country imposes controls on key material exports and seeks greater economic self-sufficiency. Other major rivals of the United States like Russia and Iran have been forced by international sanctions to also adopt an autarkic worldview, leaving primarily “inward looking” (though imperialist) coalitions in charge of those countries. The ingredients for a more dangerous world, in other words, are mixing at precisely the moment the U.S. has itself turned in a similar direction.
[...]
America First Cronyism and Bellicosity
The ideal of self-contained autarky does not mean, as one might suppose, a less interventionist view on the world. Instead, eroding the norms of free trade obligates an advanced economy to have direct access to whatever resources it might need, or else a way to ensure the countries it buys from are perpetually in friendly hands. America’s own history can be something of a guide here—the same presidents (William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Howard Taft) who presided over the high tariffs of the Gilded Age also committed the United States to annexing Hawaii, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico, and creating a virtual empire out of most of Latin America. Coalitions that are generally inward-looking are not above having their eyes wander avariciously to foreign soil. Far from facilitating a peaceful transition to “America First” isolationism, a United States traveling this path is likely to be less averse to bellicosity and more willing to risk war, having weakened any internal commercial or civil society coalition that might push back against it. In fact, any pushback, at least from corporate America, is likely to be muted. Under an “America First” regime, firms will have strong incentive to join the inward-looking coalition if they can, much like Prussian industrialists and farmers a century ago. The major economic policy of the Trump campaign was sweeping tariffs on foreign goods. If these tariffs operate to “protect” American industries from competition, history suggests that those industries will become dependent on tariffs for their very viability, causing firms to see trade as a liability, not an opportunity. Commercial interests will be less willing to resist autocratic encroachments because their futures will be dictated largely by the whims of the Trump administration’s tariff policy—as well as any economic aid doled out to industries affected by retaliatory tariffs, as agriculture was during the last Trump administration. Solingen notes that with inward-looking coalitions, “External insecurity and competition offer rationales for extracting societal resources, collecting monopoly rents, creating cartels, rewarding protectionist constituencies, and undermining internationalizing competitors.” By 1914, very few interests remained in continental Europe that could forcefully stand against the road to war; internationalist coalitions had been politically beaten in most states.
Many of these trends are already notable today. For example, the specter of external insecurity was used by the first Trump administration to justify emergency tariffs on steel and other goods, and similarly the Biden administration argued for the strategic necessity of tariffs on electric vehicles and photovoltaic cells. The close connection between Elon Musk and the Trump transition team creates myriad new opportunities to undercut competitors and reward Musk’s own companies, including by the use of foreign policy. For example, Vice President-elect JD Vance’s threat to pull back from NATO commitments if the European Union regulates X in ways the administration disapproves of clearly shows preference for one business over similarly positioned ones, precisely because, with Musk’s promotion of accounts opposing immigration as well as aid to Ukraine, X is a key media player in the broader inward-looking coalition. Other key players may be less flamboyant than Musk but it is safe to assume that they are similarly adjusting their strategies to better survive an inward-looking coalition, and, in so doing, strengthening the coalition itself.
The fascist-elect’s economy-crushing tariffs will lead America to the road to war that no one wants.
