Hidden deep in the mountains of Ehime Prefecture, Iwayaji (岩屋寺) is the 45th temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Nestled against sheer rock cliffs at over 600 meters in altitude, it’s one of the most breathtaking and challenging stops for pilgrims.
These images capture Iwayaji in autumn, where fiery red and golden maple leaves frame the temple’s wooden halls and steep mountain paths. The contrast between the ancient architecture and the raw, natural cliffs is stunning. The priest’s quarters, built into the rock face, blend seamlessly with the rugged landscape.
At the temple entrance, visitors pass a statue of Kukai (空海), the revered Buddhist monk who founded the pilgrimage. Further inside, rows of stone statues of Buddhist deities line the mossy trails, adding to the sacred, timeless atmosphere.
Reaching Iwayaji is a journey in itself, but the serene beauty at the top is worth every step. Want more glimpses of Japan’s spiritual and natural wonders? See more at [Linktree]: https://linktr.ee/shikoku4k.

Yakuriji (八栗寺) is temple 85 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is located in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. The principal image is Sho Kannon (聖観世音菩薩), the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
This temple is perched high on Mt. Gokenzan and is accessed via a steep ropeway or mountain trail. The surrounding forest creates a serene atmosphere, and in autumn, the changing leaves bring vibrant color to the temple grounds.
The red two-story tahōtō pagoda is a standout feature, nestled among towering cedar trees and delicate maple branches. Several Jizō statues rest along the stone retaining wall. The main hall, richly adorned with purple curtains and guarded by komainu, is a striking contrast to the natural setting.
Visitors pass through a traditional tiled sanmon gate bearing the temple crest, entering a courtyard flanked by wooden temple buildings. In the distance, the green-tiled rooftops of the main sanctuary rise against a dramatic cliffside backdrop.
This is a temple full of mountain air and quiet reverence.

Yashimaji (屋島寺) is temple 84 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It’s located in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, high on the historic Yashima plateau. The temple enshrines Juichimen Kannon (十一面観世音菩薩), the Eleven-Faced Bodhisattva of Compassion.
This vibrant and multifaceted temple complex includes both Buddhist and Shinto features, reflecting Japan’s deep cultural fusion. You’ll find bright vermillion torii gates leading through a bamboo grove to a hidden shrine, seven statues of the Shichifukujin (Seven Lucky Gods) lined up beneath the trees, and the impressive main hall, weathered yet colorful with intricate detail.
A traditional wooden sanmon gate frames the long approach. Nearby, a bell tower and stone pagoda rise in a quiet gravel courtyard surrounded by trees turning to autumn. At the edge, two large tanuki statues guard a path of smaller torii gates in front of a tucked-away shrine.
It’s a site full of layers—playful, spiritual, historic, and seasonal.
