i'm just glad i'm finally getting back to editing lotacxa. we've almost reached triple digits in the google doc. 😛 i don't even know if anyone is gonna enjoy this chapter, but i'm enjoying it so that's all that matters afkjljsdkf. chapter 32 is entirely self-indulgent cause i need to give Lotor solid VTLL lore, and i'm having a ton of fun writing it. 😄

Yes, for two reasons:

I like Shiki a lot as an otome protagonist. She’s proactive, she’s feisty, she can actually hold her own in a fight, she has crippling guilt that she gradually learns to start overcoming.

I’ve just never played an otome like Scarlet Fate before, with these long sweeping routes, this edgy historical Japan AU, and choices that can lead to an instant Bad End on the spot. It feels frickin’ literary, like the War and Peace of iPad-available otome (except with less sexism). I’m sure there are others out there, but it’s my first time encountering one.

I don’t think I would enjoy it as much without Tomonori, and I don’t think I would write fanfic for it. If I ever did, it would probably (maybe) be Gentoka x Aterui… or maybe it wouldn’t, because their relationship feels a lot more one-sided and less reciprocal than Tomonori’s and Akifusa’s.

It’s clear Gentoka has moved on from unnecessary violence and shit and progressed into a happier, more mentally stable era of his life, and he falls in love with Shiki at first sight (not making that up— it’s literally what the otome says after their first meeting, before we narrow into Shiki’s head). Aterui is still actively killing rich people in the capital when we meet him, and unlike all the other love interests in the game, he ignores Shiki entirely in favor of focusing on Gentoka. (Even if you take the headcanon that he’s gay, he doesn’t notice any of the other hot guys in their entourage, either. Just his ex.) Aterui needs Gentoka and is emotionally invested in him far more than Gentoka needs Aterui.

Contrast that with Tomonori and Akifusa, who each play the hero in each other’s route because they care about each other as deeply as they care about Shiki, and they both have issues. Namely, Tomonori is depressed but smart, and Akifusa is a cheerful idiot. (Yes, I’m simplifying, but the point remains.)

So without Tomonori, I don’t think I’d enjoy Scarlet Fate as much, but I still might get some satisfaction out of watching Shiki kick ass.
