DRAMA REVIEW | In My Ashtanga Class (2022 KBS Drama Special)

Do you know Ashtanga is a hit with me. It delivers everything you want from a young adult story: it's funny, sexy and has some really well done classic rom-com moments.

Nara, our leading lady, is best described as a complainer. She's at a point of her life where things seem to have stuck: her personal and work life are not good, she compares herself to others and and even judges them.

I really appreciate a drama special centering around a young woman, in her thirties, still trying to figure out things. After quitting a well paid job and following her passion, Nara is not even close to have an answers about life and has to deal with her own insecurities, which are mostly what's holding her back, and that feels true to life. Nara goes through a journey of accepting life as it is and learning to change what she doesn't like about it. Letting go of her expectations might be the hardest part, especially when society has programmed you to be a certain way and have certain things, at certain age.

To say she's at a low point emotionally it's an understatement. That's when she experiences an adorable meet-cute with Tae-joon, the son of the wealthy family from whom Nara rents the studio where she teaches yoga.

Tae-joon likes Nara immediately, thinking of her as the perfect combination of cute and cool. He is polite, nerdy, eager to help and respectful. His attraction to Nara is based on the fact he likes how she holds herself trough life... he might be one of the greenest flags I have seen in Dramaland.

He also deals with his own insecurities about his economic status, being self-conscious about people seeing him as a spoiled rich guy having grown up with a family that it's rather snobby and not a fan of his views on life. For example, his mother berates him for collecting items to donate for the needy and insist for him to start wearing luxury brands instead of buying clothes at the smaller shops at the neighbourhood. It's clear people have misjudged him before because of his money.

The story might be full of tropes but is in the performances where this story shines. Both leads deliver their lines with such an easy chemistry, dry humor and comedic timing that's impossible not to smile at every interaction they share. The story is so well written that it feels well rounded and the world lived in, the characters full of colour.

I absolutely recommend this sweet and fun rom-com that might give you some food for thought.

Vagabond

The ending. . . OMG the ending!!!! It left me with my mouth open. Quite frankly, I'm in denial. It put me through all this turmoil and for what?! To leave me hanging, literarily, where it started!

I liked the series. It was action packed, the changes in allegiance and the plot twists - they all kept me waiting for the next episode. I had a feeling Samuel was Park and I didn't get it wrong, but that ending, which is really not an ending at all, just left me restless. Will they ever cross paths again? Will they find justice? Or will they keep going in this circle with no end?

If you want a series with a solid ending, don't watch this one. But if you don't mind that, then watch it. It's really good.

Not many people are talking about this hidden gem so here I am, letting it out that it’s one hell of a drama.

I love how the younger versions of the main couple look so similar, especially Kim Hyun Joo and Sun Hwa. Ji Jin Hee has got not-so-asian facial bones that’s hard to find in other Korean actors but still Yeon Woo Jin carries the exact same vibes of being the nice guy. 

The actor who is playing their son, Yoo Seon Ho, is doing a brilliant job, with the high pitched voice and unstable eye movements. He is such a cutie IRl, though.

I am loving the office dynamic as well in the otherwise super tense CIO, the guy (Choi Dae Chul) who keeps snacking all the time, is slowly opening up to all the other warmhearted people in her core team, is such a delight. The potential office-couple of Bae Yoon Kyoung and  Kang Young Seok is adorable too. Their cute bickering is always feel like a fresh air. Someone please give Kang Young Seok a bigger role, his adorable dimples are such a waste for these tiny roles. 

The OST WHERE ARE YOU by Katie Kim, is a bomb too. The editing is quite top-notch, and they insert the OST always at the perfect times. It just gives you goosebumps when it goes:

I must’ve mistaken my best decision was just keeping lies behind a door, I used to believe my lie was perfect, until it was not.

Ji Jin Hee just keeps getting better like a fine wine, no doubt about that. It breaks your heart so much that he has to pay a huge price for his one lie. He had to put on a smile when his father was dying alone. The sweet family he protected with all his love and care, that is nothing but goals, is actually founded on a lie is devastating. and I love this thing about this drama. The corruption, politics, nasty NIS people and everything else does not matter at one point but this cute little family. 

His actions scenes are done so well, there is not a single movement that seem like, “Are you kidding me? He isn’t a superhero.” Every move is so well choregraphed, given his age and his background as an NIS agent. But still so realistic, he does slow down, he does get hurt and bleed. 

I am just not satisfied with how they are writing scenarios around Choi Yeon Soo, as the CIO Director. She was a pretty smart lawyer and suddenly after becoming the Director every move of hers is falling flat. I understand these are much bigger people and motives she is fighting against but still, I would like to see her win, on her own. With no assistance from her husband. Show us that badass bitch energy. 

Lastly, I hate that old NIS Director. He is either eating with nasty people, planning his next cunning move or recklessly beating around his underlings. I was fuming in anger when they showed how he slapped the female agent. I can’t wait for him to go down. His fake patriotism is so toxic that even it you are not Korean, you keep scoffing every time he says, “For the sake of this country”. Bitch, please.

The Dinos At A Glance- The NC Dinos have come down to Earth a bit over the past week or so. They are (5-5) in their past ten games and took two out of three games against the KT Wiz this week in Suwon. Jin-Hyuk No is on fire as of late. He hit 6-for-10 with a homer and three RBI’s against the Wiz this week. The Dinos scored thirteen runs in the three-game series. Drew Rucinski threw a solid game on Tuesday night with seven innings, where he allowed three runs. Mike Wright allowed one run over five innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Thursday. Chang-Mo Koo struggled for the first time all season. He gave up five runs over four innings in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Closer Jong-Hyun Won has locked down twelve saves with a 2.33 ERA on the season. Jae-Hwan Bae has been a solid righty out of the bullpen with a 3.00 ERA in 21 innings of work. Yoon-Gu Kang is the best left option with a 3.12 ERA over 8 2/3 innings. 

The Bears At A Glance- The Bears were in a slump heading into last weekend, but they have came out cruising. Doosan swept the LG Twins and took two out of three games from the SK Wyverns this week. They are half a game out of second place behind the red hot Kiwoom Heroes. Jae-Hwan Kim is liking DH duty now that Jose Fernandez is forced to play first base. He hit 7-for-12 with two homers and eight RBI’s against the Wyverns. The good news is that the Bears got third basemen Kyoung-Min Hur back this week and Jae-Il Oh played at first base to close out the night cap on Thursday night. Oh went 0-for-5 in the first game and didn’t bat in the nightcap. Chris Flexen threw a great game on Tuesday night with eight strikeouts over six innings of work. Hui-Kwan Yu got knocked around in the first game of the doubleheader, but the Bears still won 14-6. The Bears couldn’t figure out Seung-Won Moon in the nightcap and lost 7-0. Duk-Joo Ham is the closer for the Bears with seven saves and a 2.75 ERA. Chi-Guk Park 3.22 ERA and Kang-Ryul Kim 2.84 ERA have been solid relievers for Doosan. 

What To Watch For- The Dinos are (4-2) against the Bears in 2020. NC took two out of three games in May at Jamsil Baseball Stadium then took two out of three again back in Changwon. Eui-Ji Yang has three homers against the Bears this season. Jae-Il Oh has homered off Dinos pitchers twice in 2020. Jose Fernandez is hitting 8-for-25 (.320) against NC this year. I’m anxious to see how the Bears lineups look in this series. Kyoung-Min Hur is back and Jae-Il Oh is too. Jose Fernandez was playing first base in Oh’s absence, but Jae-Hwan Kim has been the primary DH lately. Do the Bears add more offense and put Kim in left field or keep Oh out of the lineup and add more defense with In-Tae Kim in left? That will be interesting to watch. This is a big series for both teams, who just saw the Heroes go (8-2) this week and rise up to second place.

Mother started watching tvN’s Stranger (aka Secret  Forest) on Netflix a few days ago and I’m watching with her because it’s one of the best dramas of 2017.

Also, re-watching the budding friendship between Shi-mok and Eun-soo knowing how it ends is gut-wrenching and heartbreaking. Why Show?! Whyyy?!!

Wedding Impossible

I didn't even have time to let you know I was going to watch this series. I pretty much went head on and finished it in a couple of days. I liked this story. The characters feel real and misunderstanding and pain is what drives all the misfortunes in the story. I like Do Han's friendship with Na A Jeong, even though he was so selfish towards her and his brother. I loved how Ji Han and A Jeong got to know each other and fell in love.

It's a simple story but heartfelt, sweet and fun to watch. I liked the fact that Secretary Kim got what Ji Han had promised since he was little. I like that the grandfather is able to build a relationship with the one grandson he had cast aside growing up. The family dynamics at the Na household was nice too.

Do Han and Ji Han's relationship is difficult but they love each other very much, these are boys that are broken and A Jeong is the one that understands and supports him. And at the same time, these two brothers are the ones that understand her too.

I enjoyed watching this series!

P.S. It feels so weird to see Kwon Hae Hyo playing a grandfather role! Time flies but to me these older actors are forever young.
