Piece of wisdom: „... if the subject brightness range (SBR) is greater than nine stops between the required Zone I and Zone IX, we underexpose by one stop less than the difference, eg if the SBR is 11 stops, we have a difference of 2 stops from 9 and therefore underexpose by 1 stop from the normally correct zone V setting. However, we pre-flash through a diffuser at zone I, ie we take a Reading through the diffuser with the meter in the same direction as the camera lens, and we adjust it to 4 stops less to reach Zone I. This is the flash exposure we give through the cameramen’s, covered now by the diffuser. The actual image with exposure is double exposed on to the same frame with a completely different exposure setting as dictated by the meter reading without the diffuser. This pre-flash lifts up the shadows...“ I have long been a fan of Barry Thornton but this definitely is something I am going to try to apply! (Barry Thornton, Elements.
