“Once it’s activated, it grants the user one spell of their choice,” Strange said. “Then—poof. Dust.”

“Perhaps it’s already been found and used.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

Loki rested his head on his hand. “Probably for the best that I didn’t find it. I have a tendency to wish for very foolish things. I likely would have wasted the spell.”

Strange’s smile got crooked again. “Wait a second. You think you could activate it?”

Pursing his lips and arching an eyebrow, Loki said, “Obviously. Is that in question?”

“Uh…”

With a huff of air, Loki flicked his fingers. The ship suddenly disappeared around them, leaving them apparently floating in space, nothing around them but black vacuum and stars shining cold and white in the distance.

Strange looked around, an appreciative expression on his face, but then he glanced back at Loki. “I mean, it’s a good illusion,” he said. “But I’m not sure it’s really like, activating the Eye of Basphorus level magic.”

A space shark swam up, its dorsal fin cutting through the darkness, starlight shining in its button black eyes, and came nose to nose with Strange. He leaned over to peer around it, looking at Loki. “Not even the scariest thing I’ve seen this week.”

The shark sprouted tentacles and several hundred more eyes along its body.

“Creepier,” Strange admitted.

Snapping his wrist, Loki vanished the illusion and ate another piece of fruit. “How does one activate the Eye of Basphorus then, if it’s so complicated and beyond someone like me?”

“Someone like you? C’mon. Don’t leave me hanging.”

Loki studied his fingernails, painted black. “Only the most powerful sorcerer in the Nine Realms.”
