chapter 4 is kinda the "ah there he goes Komaeda is now mean to everyone" chapter but its focus characters are basically the perfect counter to Komaeda's approach to life and death and therefore extremely fitting setup for Komaeda's death the next chapter.
Nidai is, like Komaeda, someone who has a terminal health condition that severely limits what he can achieve compared to most people. But he chooses to live the life he has to the fullest, doing what he can in its duration by being himself to support others. Tanaka is, like Komaeda, someone who is aware of the unfairness of life, that for instance in the wild certain animals must die so others can live. But he knows that even those which die as prey fight as hard as they can before their demise. All three of these characters are aware of how unfair life is and that it may be cut sort at any moment before it comes to fruition. But unlike Komaeda, both Tanaka and Nidai respect the life they're given. Being fated to a stepping stone for another's life, like a mice that gets eaten by a hawk, doesn't mean the mice gives up on its own life; the mice will still fight as hard as it can to live, and will have lived until its death. A human life is no different, it's meant to be lived.
So fitting that it is this chapter in which Komaeda learns the truth and rejects living, his life and everyone elses too, and spends the trial looking down on the class while they internalize Tanaka's message of always walking forward. This is the chapter that could have given him food for thought as to his own situation, but instead because he learns the awful truth he preemptively dismisses everything and rejects the moral of the chapter by rejecting the idea of living and moving forward, leading to him not only throwing away his life but now attempting to kill everyone else too in the next chapter
#danganronpa#sdr2#chapter 4 is honestly such a good lead-in to chapter 5 and endgame in terms of themes I think about it a lot#and I joke that dr2 is Komaeda The Game but I do truly believe that all the komaeda focus is extremely necessary#bc he has that extremely defeatist. despairing if you will. attitude that the game rejects and tears down#and it makes perfect sense where it comes from too given everything about his life and that he has two terminal illnesses#(in a way that's also a bit different from tanaka and nidai's case too tbh but that's an adjacent topic)#to the point I think part of the question he raises isn't 'how do you flip his world views so they stop being Like That'#but rather how do you understand and accomadate someone with such experiences#in a way that doesn't invalidate and dismiss them. but also stops them from being a harm to themselves and hence others#honestly despite being program mandated therapist I don't think nanami could have helped komaeda only hinata#he desires understanding and gravitates to hinata bc they're similar. nanami isn't so I don't think she'd understand him enough to give any#perspective. vs hinata who can#which is also why I think Hinata is such a good counter to him bc Hinata has the experience of having his own life and existence erased#to become izuru. when he felt like nothing. which is something I think Komaeda could actually understand#and see himself in and use to flip himself around#not that it's hinata's responsibility. and yet the game does have commentary on Understanding others. bc Hinata's#reaction to his death isn't 'thank god' or 'deserved' or anything#but rather regret at not understanding him earlier. and given a motive to understand him via the trial#dr talk#dr meta#tanaka's view is also rather tobias animorphs of him but ya know tobias lives as a hawk
