It's the nonsensical that takes you out of the story and makes it feel like a story and not real life. Keeps it from getting too heavy

Plus it's nostalgic as it gets. Something about the grainy film and it-ain't-that-deep storytelling makes me feel safe, warm, and ready to curl up in my pyjamas like I'm 5 again and it's movie night

It’s become common to lament (wrongly) that “nobody wants to work anymore.” Perhaps we would, if only the work in question was, say, putting on a pot of tea for several woodland critters inside one’s hollowed-out tree home. Call it a cultural aftereffect of the Great Resignation, or, as Kelsey Weekman coined in BuzzFeed, “the era of the sleepytime girlfriend,” but by far its most adorable iteration is people posting illustrations from Beatrix Potter or Frog and Toad and captioning them “Stop normalizing the grind and normalize whatever this is.”

Welterbe (auf)gespürt und (er)fahren - UK - Kathedrale von Durham

Wir waren mit dem Zug und einem Interrail-Ticket durch das Vereinigte Königreich unterwegs und hatten unsere Zelte für einige Tage in Newcastle upon Tyne aufgeschlagen. Von dort waren Durham und Saltaire recht schnell zu erreichen.

Auf die Kathedrale von Durham war ich besonders gespannt, denn ihr eilte die Würdigung meines Lieblings-Reiseschriftstellers Bill Bryson voraus. Die Kathedrale von Durham wurde zwischen dem späten 11. und frühen 12. Jahrhundert auf dem Gelände von Durham Castle erbaut. Das Schloss, das auf Befehl von Wilhelm dem Eroberer errichtet worden war, diente als Festung und Residenz der Fürstbischöfe von Durham, die religiöse und auch weltliche Macht innehatten. Die Lage des Komplexes auf einer Halbinsel des Flusses Wear war sowohl optisch beeindruckend, als auch durch die steilen Ufer strategisch günstig. Aus diesem Grund hatten im zehnten Jahrhundert die Mönche aus Lindisfarne die Gebeine des St. Cuthbert (634–687 n. Chr.) aus Furcht vor den Überfällen der Wikinger hierher gebracht und zunächst in einer kleinen steinernen Kirche beigesetzt. Später wurde dafür die Kathedrale erbaut, in der sich außerdem die Reliqien des Ehrwürdigen Beda (672/3–735 n. Chr.) befinden. Innerhalb des Schlossbezirks befinden sich spätere Gebäude der Durham-Pfalz mit dem Bischofshof (heute die Bibliothek), Armenhäusern und Schulen. Die große Freifläche diente einst als standesgemäßer Ort für Prozessionen und auch heute für Versammlungen. Die Kathedrale von Durham steht als das größte und schönste Beispiel normannischer Architektur in England seit 1986 auf der UNESCO-Welterbeliste. Ein Einführungsvideo gibt es hier. Schon vom Bahnhof aus sah man gegenüber die Altstadt liegen, doch echt dramatisch wurde die Kulisse vom Flusstal aus und wir konnten uns gut vorstellen, wie gewaltig die bischöfliche Festung hoch auf dem Berg im Mittelalter gewirkt haben musste.

Über die Brücke gelangten wir in die Altstadt mit ihrem mittelalterlichen Markt und den hübschen bunten Läden und Restaurants. Von dort ging es weiter bergauf zum Schloss.

Auf dem Schlossplatz blieben wir erst einmal, beeindruckt von der Größe und Schönheit der Kathedrale, eine ganze Weile stehen.

Um den großen Platz stehen die ehemaligen Klostergebäude. Wir entdeckten das Krankenhaus und die Bibliothek.

Unseren Rundgang durch die Kathedrale begannen wir in der zwischen 1175–1189 an die Westseite der Kirche angebauten Galiläa-Kapelle mit den Grab des Beda Venerabilis. Als die Kathedrale noch Klosterkirche war, war dies der einzige Raum, den auch Frauen betreten durften.

Das Mittelschiff der Kathedrale ist 61 m lang und 22 m hoch und wirkt doch durch seine ganz unterschiedlich verzierten Säulen filigran und durch die hellen Fenster sehr licht. Auch der Chor ist wunderbar verziert, hier befindet sich St. Cuthberts Schrein.

Der anschließende Kreuzgang ist nicht nur architektonisch wunderschön und stimmungsvoll, er hält auch für Harry-Potter-Fans einige Drehorte bereit.

Natürlich stiegen wir, wie überall, wo das möglich ist, auf den Turm - 323 Stufen hoch - zur Belohnung bot er einen fantastischen Blick über die Stadt im Tal.
