You were born just four weeks apart.

Your mothers were inseparable since high school. Raised you both more like siblings than friends. Jungkook was there for every birthday, every scraped knee, every first day of school. When you got your period for the first time, he brought you a whole ass cake because he thought that's what people did for "milestones". When his first dog died in the nineth grade, you snuck into his room through the window and lay beside him while he cried into your hoodie.

And when you turned sixteen and got dumped at prom, Jungkook kissed you for the first time. He tasted like lemon soda, which was your favorite. His lips were hesitant, soft and trembling.

"You okay?" he whispered.

"I am now."

That night, neither of you said anything more, but something shifted.

It stayed like that for a while . Late-night texts turned into staying on the phone until one of you passed out. Sleepovers turned into sharing the same bed, breathing the same air, talking about everything and nothing in the dark.

He said it once, at seventeen. "I like you. Like... more than friends."

You laughed. Not because you didn't feel the same (God, you did), but because it scared the hell out of you. So much of your world had him in it. If you lost him, you'd lose your home. He is home.

Still, you kissed him back. Again and again.

None of you put any labels on it. You just thought that being the best of friends with Jungkook was enough. You didn't define it. You didn't need to. It was just you and him. It always had been. But friends don't kiss friends and they sure as hell don't hold each other like that.

Until university.

It started slow. You both got into the same university, just different majors. Jungkook chose Film Production and Media Communications. No surprise there, given his passion for visual storytelling that had burned bright since he was five. You remembered how fascinated he was with cameras and everything behind the scenes. Vivid memories of him pestering you to be his muse when he got his first video camera for his fifteenth birthday still lingered. Of course, you were happy to help. After all, Jungkook was your best friend even if you pretended to be annoyed at first.

Through his studies, he met new people and made many friends. Friends of friends, mutual connections. That’s how you came to know the group. Seven guys, including Jungkook, who were practically inseparable.

First time meeting Jungkook's friends, he introduced you to them as a good friend. He was honest with them about you being like a little sister to him. They all thought it was cute. Until one of them, who smile looked like it was made of sunshine, and an unmatched stage presence. Asked Jungkook for permission if he got the green light to sleep with you. You stared at him in disbelief, and Jungkook simply nodded in your direction, his expression cold and indifferent.

“By all means,” he said, earning amused grins from the group.

All you could manage before storming off was something between “fuck off” and “you’re fucking disgusting.” You don’t even remember which. Maybe you said both.

By second year of uni, he decided to join a frat, along with the rest of the guys. You, on the other hand, had no interest in sororities. You were focused on your business assignments and staying close to the small circle of friends you've made along the way.

As time passed, Jungkook partied more and texted less. Still, every time your parents called to check in, they'd ask about him too. Sometimes, those calls turned into full-on video chats. You, Jungkook, his parents, and yours. Like one big, blended family that hadn't quite realized how much had changed.

One Sunday evening, the screen filled with familiar faces. Your mum in her kitchen apron, his dad already with a glass of wine in hand, and Jungkook, hoodie tossed on, hair messy from either sleep or editing. It was hard to tell.

"Jungkook!" his mum smiled, eyes bright.

"Have you been keeping up with classes? That film project you mentioned last time?"

He grinned, the picture of effortless charm. "Yeah! I just wrapped up my final project. A short docu on campus creatives. Got really good feedback from my lecturer."

You couldn’t help but be amused when you heard that. You knew Jungkook had been filming around campus for his project, but you never imagined he could handle both the filming and the editing. Especially with how often he partied. You had to admit, you underestimated him. Still, no matter what, to you, Jungkook was still a piece of shit of a friend.

"That's our son!" his dad added, proud.

"Directing the next big movie, huh?"

You smiled politely as your parents chimed in with compliments. But you already knew Jungkook was thriving. Film had always lit him up in a way few things could. Even if he no longer shared that part of himself with you the way he used to.

Then came the question that changed the air in the room.

"And you're looking after Y/n, right?" his mum asked gently.

"Walking her to her dorm, checking in, making sure she's not overworking again?"

Your dad chuckled, "She's buried in business case studies. Needs someone to pull her away from that laptop."

There was a pause. The kind you feel more than hear.

You looked at Jungkook on the screen and for a fleeting moment, it felt like he was looking right back at you.

Then came the lie.

"Yeah, of course. I've been helping her with that marketing presentation," he said smoothly, "we meet up at the library once a week. She's doing great."

"Yeah, Jungkook's a great help." You said. Your lips then tightened into a soft smile you didn't mean.

Because that wasn't true. You'd been working on your own. Pulling late nights with your friends in the study lounge, quietly wondering if he’d even noticed your absence. Meanwhile, he was off doing God knows what.

"That's so sweet," your mum replied. "You've always been good to her."

Jungkook nodded casually, brushing hair from his eyes. “She’s got my back too.”

The call moved on, laughter returning like nothing had happened. But in that quiet space inside you. The one he used to fill so easily. Something cracked just a little.

He wasn’t lying to them.

He was lying for them.

And maybe a little to himself too.

Then suddenly, it wasn't slow at all.

He stopped calling. Started passing each other on campus like strangers, not even a nod. Apparently, Jungkook was too cool for you now.

He even missed your twenty first birthday.

And the next time you saw him, he was laughing with his "brothers", arms slung around some girl you didn't recognize. Completely oblivious to the way your stomach dropped when you caught his eye, and he looked right through you.

Two weeks later, your close uni friend Hana showed you a photo that he was in. It was of him. A girl. His hand up her shirt. Tongue in her mouth.

You stared at the screen until your vision blurred, then dropped your phone like it burned.

The night you finally confronted him was supposed to give you closure.

Instead, it gave you scars.

You didn't expect him to be sober, he wasn't. You didn't expect him to smile at you, he didn't. But you hoped, deep down that he'd say something. That the boy who kissed your forehead and called you "star girl" hadn't completely disappeared.

He was leaning against the wall of some house party that went around campus. Drink in his hand, shirt unbuttoned just enough to piss you off. A glint from his lip caught your eye. A fresh piercing, one you hadn’t seen before, and his sleeve was inked with new tattoos, still bold against his skin. You hate how irresistible he looked, given the heartache and confusion he's caused you.

"Jungkook."

He looked up, eyes hazy, jaw tense. "What are you doing here?"

Your throat tightened. "What the hell happened to you?"

He snorted. "What do you mean?"

"This." You motioned to everything. "This isn't you. You're not... this."

He raised an eyebrow, the corner of his mouth twitching with something bitter. "Maybe this is me. Maybe I just stopped pretending."

You swallowed hard. "No. You're running."

"From what?"

"From us," you shouted. But it came out barely louder than a whisper.

There was silence and for a moment, just a breath. Something flickered in his eyes. Maybe it was regret or pain. Something real.

But then it was gone.

"There is no us," he said flatly. "There never was."

You flinched. "What about everything you said? Every promise. You-"

"I was a fucking kid," he snapped. "We both were. That shit doesn't mean anything now."

And just like that, the air between you shattered.

You couldn't move. Couldn't breathe.

He turned away, disappearing into the crowd and the bass and the blur of alcohol and bad decisions. Leaving you behind like none of it ever mattered.

You couldn't sleep that night.

You wanted to hate him. You try to erase the way he held you when your parent fought for the first time, the way he used to trace both your initials on fogged-up windows, pretending he didn’t care if you noticed, even though he always did.

But hate doesn't come easy when love came first.

And no matter how many girls he sleeps with, no matter how many parties he drowns in, he'll always be the boy who painted stars on his ceiling with you.

The boy who swore you were his favorite constellation.

The boy who forgot how to look up.

hello!! I was wondering if you could do a spencer agnew x reader fic (fem!reader if that’s okay) where spencer and reader are coworkers at Smosh. Both are cast and have never really gotten along the best but one day things kinda click for them in a video during a shoot (kinda acquaintance to friends to lovers). During this shoot and once the video airs, other Smosh workers and even fans start to notice the change, like how they always want to be touching or near each other in some way in other videos or even when not filming. It’s just that neither of them realize then the smosh peps try to start and force them into spaces and situations together to hopefully get them to realize their feelings and admit them. Thanks! And hopefully this made sense lol

Okay, so this was originally going to just be a oneshot, but I've been working on it since last week and it's not even close to being done yet, so I'm releasing it in parts.

A Loving Feeling | Pt. 1

Spencer Agnew x Reader Warnings: None WC: 2,195 Pt.1, Pt. 2

It wasn’t that Spencer was bad per say, nor was it that you were particularly stuck up, but rather, you both just hadn’t interacted all that much. It made no sense as to why, really. You knew everyone else loved him, even the more bubbly ones like you, but you just never sat down and chatted with him. Frankly, it had gotten a little annoying how often people brought him up in conversation. Whenever you talked about a videogame you liked, Shayne would bring up how Spencer had already done a playthrough last year. If you brought up a show you were watching, Angela would mention how Spencer tried getting her to watch it. It was kind of pissing you off, and you didn’t really know the guy. It’s not like you watched many Smosh videos anyways, but you especially didn’t watch the videos with him. If you started to like him just from his on-screen persona, then that wouldn’t feel right at all. And if you hated him for his on-screen persona, that also wouldn’t feel fair. 

Which is why you were a little nervous to see that you both were supposed to be on camera together as two sisters in a Spud Hut video. You figured that it shouldn’t be too difficult, it’s just a few minutes on camera and a few minutes talking it out beforehand. It’s mostly improv, but you still wanted to get some things straight, like names.

When you walk up to the man (who is currently dressed as a middle-aged woman) you had yet to have spoken to, you suck in a breath, mentally preparing yourself for him to roll his eyes and walk away from you. You don’t even know why you think this, because he’s never been rude or standoffish to you in the past, but since you two had never really spoken anything’s on the table.

“Okay, so I don’t know about you, but I think my character’s screaming ‘Carrie’,” you begin, because nothing better than just jumping in without saying anything like “Hey! Nice to finally talk to you! Sorry we haven’t talked in the whole ass year that I’ve been here!” But to your surprise, he looks down at your outfit with a nonchalant glance and nods.

“You’re absolutely right, that’s a Carrie for sure.” The smile on his face felt like ice cold water in the heat. You felt relieved, safer, that there didn’t need to be anything to worry about. “For alliteration purposes I’ll be Mary.”

You smile back at him, still a little nervous, but now mostly alright. You don’t know how it’ll be improvising with him, you don’t know if you have a similar sense of humor, you don’t know anything about this man you’ve worked in the same building as for the past year except you apparently have the similar interests.

It’s time to get on set, and you both wait until you’re given the go ahead to enter the kitchen where you’re filming. When you’re finally told to head on, you feel Spencer’s arm lock with yours as he walks merrily into the room, where Chanse, Angela, and Damien are standing. You remind yourself to get in character as you walk up to “order.”

“Well I’ll be, this place is… unique, Mary,” you begin, giving your character a southern accent. Spencer glances over at you with a nod. When he speaks, his voice sounds hilariously high-pitched.

“I do agree, Carrie. I don’t know what on earth anyone sees in a place like this.”

At this, Chanse steps forward, introducing himself in character.

“Hi, my name is Jerry Spruce, I’m the owner of the Spud Hut. Our special today is the Oyster Spud,” he says, painfully in-character. You internally cringe at the concept of an “oyster spud” but you nod and put on an impressed face.

“An Oyster Spud? That sounds very well refined, doesn’t it, sister?”

“Very much so, sister. I do say, I heard there was the famed fettuccine alfredo spud here?” Spencer asks, which gets a nod from Chanse.

“Yes, our fettuccino alfredi spud is world renowned. I can get both of those ready for you now.”

You look over at Spencer, feeling less and less awkward by the minute. He turns back to you and catches you staring, so you speak to cover it up.

“Sister, I’m disappointed. You know, a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips,” you say, mimicking an older, judgy aunt as best you can. Spencer’s face breaks out in a small smile as he tries not to break.

“Sister, I know you are not talking to me about what to eat. I’ve seen the things you put in your mouth and it’s filthy,” he ends with a snap, acting all sassy. You mirror him, yet this whole time you still keep your arms locked.

“I can’t believe you’d call your husband filthy then, Mary,” you finish with another snap, which makes him gasp and clutch the pearls around his neck with his white-gloved hand.

“Well, I’ll tell you Carrie, that the reason your husband left you is because I showed him how much better he could have had it with me.”

By this point, Chanse has now brought over the potatoes, but you two are both so into the fake argument that you take the potatoes from his hands and begin to walk out.

“I am telling mother all the cruel and sinful things you’ve been doing, Mary,” you say, not taking your eyes from Spencer’s. He huffs out a laugh and turns up his nose.

“Have fun talking to a grave then, Carrie.” And with that, you are off the set. Still though, you have to be silent for an extra minute while the crew makes sure you’re not needed again before taking off the costumes. So for that time, you both just look at each other and try not to laugh. Once you’re both given the green light to take off your mics and undress, you let out a snicker and unloop your arm from his. For the first time since walking into the kitchen, you both aren’t pinned to each other’s side. As you undo your mic, you speak.

“God, that was really fun,” you say to no one in particular, looking down partly to see what you’re doing, but mostly to avoid eye contact with him.

“Yeah, it’s no wonder Shayne and Amanda keep saying we should be in videos together. We nailed that shit,” he says, now undoing his own mic. Your snaps up to look up at him at this. You didn’t know he was also getting those same words as you were.

“Yeah, we definitely did.” There’s a pause for a moment before you let out a nervous sigh before looking up at him. “Hey, I feel bad that we’ve never really talked before. I don’t even know why I never just came up to you to break the ice, but I guess at some point I just thought it was too late and so it’d be awkward and all, so I–”

“Hey, don’t worry about it. I get it, I meant to introduce myself when you joined, but then I didn’t,” Spencer says, before finally looking up at you and extending his hand to you. “Let me start over. Hey, I’m Spencer, director of games. It’s nice to meet you, I’ve heard so much about you.”

You stare at his hand for a moment, a little shocked by his actions, before meeting his hand in a handshake.

“Nice to meet you too. I hear we have a lot in common,” you say, a small smile on your face. He chuckles in response, shaking his head before looking you back in the eye.

“So have I. My break’s in a couple minutes. How ‘bout we go grab lunch and talk about it?” Spencer asks. Once more, you’re surprised. Upon first glance at the man, you’d never guess he’s the type of person to be so bold and nice. You just thought he was an introverted shy guy, which you guess he can be at times, but right now he’s asking to hang out to get to know each other more. The thought of finally mending the gap you had unknowingly placed between the two of you makes you smile.

“Sure, that’d be awesome. Let me go get out of this old woman apparel.”

“Aw man, I thought it suited you pretty well.”

“Have you been on TikTok lately?” Courtney’s voice draws your eyes from your computer. Confused, you shake you head.

“No… why?” You ask, thoroughly suspicious of the mischievous grin on her face. You watch as she pulls out her phone, tapping and scrolling for a couple seconds before shoving it into your face. As you adjust to the closeness, you watch as someone clipped a part of the recent Spud Hut video you were on, specifically the parts with you and Spencer. You don’t see why she was so insistent that you saw the video until you notice someone found you two in the background, still in costume and arms still locked, laughing and looking each other in the eye. Your face twists in confusion, since clearly that must have been a mishap with the camera angles to accidentally keep you two in, just barely in the corner. Glancing down at the caption, your eyes widen.

Literally the cutest non-canon couple at Smosh. There’s a reason they haven’t appeared in videos together up until now 🧐

Your heart practically stops at the sight of those words. You don’t know why, you’ve been shipped with other people in the cast before, but this just felt weird. Maybe it’s because you two had been getting closer and closer in the weeks since filming. You have gone to his apartment a couple of times, mostly to play videogames and hang out with his cats, but there had never been any tension with him. You’ve just become good buddies, which is why this feeling of nervousness and blush makes you confused.

“What? Why would people think that’s anything? It’s clearly just us talking. These fans are crazy,” you say, a little too frenzied to set things straight, which Courtney clearly notices.

“Interesting. Anyways, so how have you two been getting along lately? I’ve seen the both of you chatting it up after shoots, ready to say I was right?” They tease, leaning forward and confronting you on your stubbornness. 

“Yeah… fine, you were right. He’s actually… he’s actually really cool,” you admit, somewhat grumbling to avoid the embarrassment you know is coming.

“You guys talking about me?” You hear an all too familiar voice ask from behind you. Just as you turn your head to see him, you feel two pairs of hands resting against the back of your seat.

“Actually, we were,” Courtney says, making your cheeks feel even warmer. “But anyways you guys. In one month. My birthday party. You both better come.”

Your smile widens at that, always excited to hang out with your friends outside of work. 

“Yeah, of course. Where will it be at?” You ask, still feeling Spencer’s hands lingering behind you.

“Just our place, it’s nothing too crazy. Just gonna have some drinks and play some games and stuff. So be there or be square!” They say jokingly before walking off, leaving just you and Spencer. You look up, seeing his face from upside down when he looks down at you with a smile.

“Will you need a ride, my lady?” He asks, his voice teasing, but gentle. He normally doesn’t drink much at these events anyways, while you normally get a little tipsy. Not good for driving. You smile back at him.

“Indeed I will, my lord,” you respond, making him smile even wider before letting go of the back of your seat. This grants you the opportunity to turn around to see him as he backs off some more. “Alright, it’s time for me to head back to games. See ya.”

You reply back before watching him turn around and head back the way he came. For a moment, you can’t seem to take your eyes off him, just watching as he walks, before shaking your head and returning to your work on your computer.

You think back to the TikTok Court showed you, how suddenly your fans have turned to shipping you and Spencer. Shaking your head of the thought, you remember how you need to get Courney a gift, so you pull out your phone to text your new friend.

To: Spencer From: You Wanna go to the mall or something later to get Court gifts?

You barely have time to set your phone down before you get a response that makes your smile widen.

To: You From: Spencer Sounds cool. I’ll drive you after work?

Summary: You’re usually behind the scenes, amused, and relieved you aren’t in front of the camera during media filming days. Karma must be out to get you though, because this week the boys have to film a video with one of the crew members, and, against all odds - that crew member is you.

It started with Charlotte, our social media manager, which meant it was going to be trouble.

“Hey,” she said, appearing out of nowhere like she always did when we were just relaxing. “I need you for a media shoot.”

I looked up from my laptop, skeptical. “Me?”

“Yeah. It’s random draw this weekend. Zak wanted to highlight some behind-the-scenes staff for the fan content rotation.”

Lando, lounging nearby with a packet of crisps, grinned. “You’ve been summoned.”

Oscar, not looking up from his phone, added, “It’s about time someone else gets dragged into these things.”

Charlotte waved a card. “It’s a ‘Who Knows Them Better?’ challenge. You’ll be the ‘mystery crew member.’ The fans’ll love it, seeing how well the drivers really know the people around them.”

Lando nudged Oscar. “You’re going down.”

Oscar deadpanned, “You still think I don’t know your coffee order.”

Charlotte continued. “You two are competing. She asks the questions. You write your guesses. Winner gets a prize. Loser gets a forfeit.”

“What’s the forfeit?” Lando asked.

Charlotte grinned too wide.

“…It’s going to be bad, isn’t it,” I muttered.

They set us up on the lawn behind the McLaren hospitality tent.

Three chairs. Two whiteboards. One crew member (me), now regretting her entire morning.

The rules were simple: I’d ask ten personal questions (basic stuff) and Lando and Oscar would each write their guesses. Most correct answers wins. The loser drinks a concoction the interns called “The Surprise Smoothie,” which smelled vaguely of mango, brine, and regret.

“What if I lose?” I asked.

Charlotte shrugged. “Then you get your dignity shredded on social media.”

“Excellent.”

Lando clapped once. “Let’s go.”

ROUND 1: What’s my go-to paddock breakfast?

Lando: Those weird overnight oats in the black container.

Oscar: Scrambled eggs and coffee.

Me: “Oscar’s right.”

Lando: “You literally had oats this morning!”

Me: “Because you made me try them.”

Oscar: “One-nil.”

Me: “Let’s stay focused.”

Me: “They’re both true.”

Charlotte, off-camera: “That was the same day.”

Oscar: “Double points?”

Oscar: Running something. Probably bossing someone around.

Lando: Project manager for some mysterious, intense operation. Possibly MI6.

Me: “Honestly? Equal points. Both scarily accurate.”

The final tally was 6-6. A draw.

Which meant both drivers had to drink The Smoothie.

Oscar sniffed his and grimaced. “Is that… celery?”

Lando took one sip, gagged, and doubled over laughing. “That’s cruel.”

“You bet your media points for this,” I reminded him.

“I have regrets,” he choked.

After the shoot, the three of us hung back on the grass, the camera team packing up around us.

“That was actually fun,” Oscar admitted, tossing his whiteboard into a pile.

“I’ll remember this when you’re forced to do a TikTok dance next time,” I said.

Lando flopped onto his back, hands behind his head. “You’re weirdly hard to read, you know.”

I blinked. “Excuse me?”

“You have all these routines, but then you’ll randomly organize a team dinner, or sneak snacks into the sim bay, or give out headache meds like you’re running a black-market pharmacy.”

Oscar added, “You’re basically the glue.”

“That’s not my job description,” I said, smiling.

“It’s your unofficial title,” Lando said, eyes closed, sunglasses slipping off his nose. “Head of keeping us functioning.”

Oscar nudged him. “That smoothie didn’t help your brain cells, did it?”

Lando sighed dramatically. “It hurts me.”

It was moments like today that made me realize how lucky I was. How fun it could be, just the three of us, hanging out and doing the most random things. Even if it was for a forced social media shoot, I still enjoyed it.

It gave me such a good feeling, warm, content. And yet fear lingered somewhere underneath. Fear that something might change.

All I could do was pray it never did.

GL odds and ends 29 December 2024

The end of the year kicked my ass, but I wanted to get one last one of these out for 2024! The last one before this was 10 November. If you're interested in GL older than that, check out my GL rec list through Feb 2024 and my #gl recs tag for the other odds and ends posts. New series marked with an asterisk*.

Currently airing (with thoughts up to 29 Dec):

The Fragrance You inherit 5/8 (Japanese, Friday/Saturday-ish, no official distribution but fansub on @isaksbestpillow's blog [thank you Siiri!] I have been really enjoying this show and have been writing when I have time (last post was for ep4). At its core this is a gentle show about kind people who love each other doing their best, which is always my favourite thing. Subs are on pause for the moment so you have time to catch up before the finale!

Pluto ep 11/12 (Thai, Saturdays 9:30 AM ET, YouTube) This plot continues to be absolutely wild. There's a lot of discourse around Oom this week, to which I'll just say: Setting a test to see if the people you love will hurt themselves in order to make you feel better is not loving or healthy behaviour, even if your motivations are understandable and sympathetic. Namtan is doing a great job making these twins feel like different people, and she and Film are still gorgeous together. And I have no idea what's up with the messy lesbian sides, but I'm on the side of all of them need a time out! I've been pretty dialed out of this show because it's not my thing, so I'm not that invested in any of the relationships going into the finale, but it's been a wild ride and it seems to be holding together for those who enjoy the high drama of this plot.

*Petrichor ep 5/10 (Thai, Saturdays, 10:00 AM ET, iQIYI) The procedural aspects of this show are unfortunately not well executed, but Engfa and Charlotte have fantastic chemistry. I'm also really loving seeing Na and Max again even though I am very worried about getting too attached to their characters. It's always hard for me when a show is about a police officer trying to do good work in a corrupt system because the only takeaway I can accept is that that is not possible lol but I'm enjoying seeing these two on my screen every week (except this week, because we sadly did not get a new episode today).

*Mate, 6/12 (Thai, Tuesdays, WeTV (uncut version)) This one is hard to describe. It seems to be trying to do for trauma in a GL what Love in the Air and Bed Friend did in BL--show a realistic depiction of trauma in one of their characters and have them fall in love, and be taken care of and healed that way. But that also makes it extremely hard to watch. The trauma flashbacks and trauma responses is rough. The main character is not very likeable but that's kinda the point, I'm not minding that part of it so much. There are a lot of things I like about this show, so I don't want to discourage views. Just go into this one informed, and make the decision that's right for you.

*INTP 1/? (Korean, Fridays (?), YouTube) This is the latest short series from RedQ, who produced some of my favourite GL short series including More than or equal to 75 degrees C, and To the Ex who Hated Me. No info on how long it will be or if it will be weekly, so that Fridays release schedule is a total guess. The setup of this one reminded me of Semantic Error if SangWoo realized he was attracted to JaeYoung at their first group assignment meeting.

Recently Completed:

Apple My Love 6.5 50-min eps (Thai, Oct 12-Nov 16, GagaOOLala and YouTube) I ended up feeling like this one bit off a bit more than it could chew, as much fun as I had with it, it was a wobbly landing. I was ok with the ending at the end but I spent a lot of time watching the finale uncertain about how I felt about all of it. There's a 30 min "episode 5.1" that is an important bridge between episodes 5 and 6 (and also includes a 10-min fingering scene, thank you show) that I think resulted from either poor pacing or realizing they needed to set up the episode better? It was odd but something to make sure not to skip. The show does a lot of what I love about Kongthup's latest BLs: it avoids the worst drama pitfalls and calls them out in the show itself when it uses them, and it is largely about being kind to its characters who are figuring themselves out. Warning for extremely hard to watch secondhand embarrassment in the first couple of episodes lol Kris is such a cringefail lesbian I love her. With the caveats above, if you don't mind secondhand embarrassment and want a comedy GL and are willing to be a little patient with the ending, give this one a try!

The Loyal Pin 16 65-min eps (Thai, Aug 4-Dec 1, YouTube) Anin was the bravest right through to the end. I really liked a lot of this show, but I found the pacing a bit uneven and the finale a little rough. It's hard, because I actually am happy with the way the show ended--it makes perfect sense and was where I was hoping they would get to the entire show. What I didn't like was how we got there. It seemed wild that Pin and Anin didn't at least talk about this possibility before we got there; and didn't feel like we ever resolved the disparity between the two leads, though the show was aware of it the whole time which I did like. And you may have seen the shouting about the prank in the finale, it was in really poor taste. In the end, this show was beautiful, gave a platform for promoting Thai culture (food, clothing, history), and had excellent intimacy. I really enjoyed the slow burn between Anin and Pin, and I loved that every character had and used the agency they had, but that the show was realistic about what was in and outside of their control. If you want a slow-burn and high-heat romance and are willing to be a little frustrated for the sake of the drama, and/or you really like a pigtail-pulling romantic dynamic, you should watch this show.

Red Whisper 8 10-min eps (Korea, Oct 2-Nov 11, YouTube) Honestly this show never got better after what I wrote about it a month ago about how its portrayal of bisexuality and nonmonogamy was upsetting. For the record one last time: Not all bisexuals are nonmonogamous, and entering a monogamous relationship under false pretenses and then acting like your partner is being unreasonable by not wanting an open relationship is shitty behaviour. This one is sadly not recommended.

The Nipple Talk 10 30-min eps (Taiwanese, Nov 8-22, GagaOOLala) I highly recommended the first half, and so I am so sad to say that I can't say the same for the second half of the show. I was really enjoying how much the show seemed to support a mix of monogamy and nonmonogamy, but the second half of the show leaned heavily into 'everyone wants a monogamous relationship when they meet the right person', which disappointed me. The show also tried to introduce some themes that felt very dated in terms of how they handled them (e.g. HIV) and I ended up just not really liking the Pony character as a person by the end. The lesbian relationship was super messy in a way that I did not find fun too. Mama was the best part of this show, and I hope we get more characters like them in future (better) shows!

*Soul Sisters 24 12-min eps (Chinese, iQIYI) This entire show dropped this week so I binged it in one go. The basic setup is a GL version of Meet You At the Blossom, except the gender fuckery lasts for most of the series and they don't actually ever get to kiss. I loved this little show; it is a frenetic, very silly and censored comedy, so calibrate your expectations accordingly. But it walks the line in a way that is palatable (or was for me, anyway). Without giving too much away, it is an open happy ending. The caveats for this one are that there is no wasted tape, so the pacing is rollercoaster fast, and the cuts are sometimes jarring. But it's a surprisingly beautiful show for the budget, and I really appreciated all of the ways they came up with to give these women shippy moments. Also, good lord this main character is so competent, which is a major weakness of mine. I had a great time!

*Whisper Me a Love Song 12 25-min eps (Japanese anime, Apr-27 Dec, HiDive) This started airing in April but there was a delay and the last episode didn't air until yesterday. High school lesbians in a band having embarrassing confused and misunderstood feelings all over the place (with good endings including a kiss for at least one of our couples). I appreciate that this anime is not playing with the 'are they friends who joke about wanting to touch each other's boobs or are they more' line, they outright say they want to be more than friends and then kiss. The music is good too! Recommended if you are feeling like a high school dramedy with good tunes that stays pretty light and is in the 'bubble'.

Recent One-offs, Side Couples, etc.:

My Hot Butch Roommate (actually a 2-parter) aired on bilibili 1, 2) and was subtitled by @douqi7s on YouTube (1, 2) These two are very cute, and this little short does a ton with the very tiny 5 minutes of total runtime it uses. Give the original bilibili uploads a stream so they get views, even if you watch the YT subbed version!

Fufuknows put out a new lesbian short titled The Choices of Two Lesbian Couples in Love on YouTube This was a great short (11 min) film featuring the story of two couples at different stages in their relationship, and the different choices they make about their futures. I really enjoy Fufuknows as queer short filmmakers, and I appreciate that they regularly include lesbian and wlw content in their bi-weekly (as in, every other week) fictional shorts that they produce and release. This one is recommended!

Aim's Lesbian plotline in the new Love Sick 2024 remake concluded (this was not a plotline in the 2014 version and it's one of the changes I really like and that I think works really well) Spoiler: she doesn't get a romance happy ending but her story ends with acceptance from her friends about who she is, which was lovely to watch

There was a brief of-the-week lesbian couple who wanted to marry in Spare Me Your Mercy Spoiler: their story is tragic, which is par for the course in a murder mystery

I am suspecting wlw sides in See Your Love I may end up eating these words but I was getting vibes, and so I'm putting this out in the universe now in hopes I'm right lol

There is a new Korean shorts production company on YouTube called Lovememory (Their first BL ep is out and the GL, First Love, has a trailer)

It is so, so nice that we have this much GL to keep track of, I can't complain! This covers a whole month of content and it was a month I was very distracted from my QL consumption so while I always welcome anyone pointing out stuff I missed, I would particularly appreciate it this round.

i have so many thoughts on something but no where to vent them all so i'm gonna word vomit it all here and delete it later

basically i had been really losing patience with people over the last few weeks regarding jungkook and his ability to go MIA for long stretches of time and it started to feel inherently demanding when they'd beg him to show a sign of life (most people were joking, but a lot of his solo stans were not and i'll come back to this). i think a lot of people either forgot or arrived during/after 2023 when he was extremely active on weverse live, so it's hard for a lot of people to imagine not hearing from him for weeks, sometimes months. that used to be very normal and idk if people's perception of him is skewed by that era, but it's just so odd to see how comfortable people have become telling him what he *needs* to do to keep the people who claim to support him entertained.

within days of discharging, they'd (solos/shippers) already ventured into the comment section of the instagram account he made for his DOG(!!!) and resorted to writing long-winded, belligerent paragraph rants telling him how angry they are that he's living his own life, not doing lives, travelling with a member because 1. how dare he let himself be forced to do fan service with someone he hates (so they decided) or 2. they're fucking and want everyone to know it and no in-between, working with bts again, not immediately giving them a solo tour, not posting anything, etc.

and it's not like his silence was unexpected? he quite literally said in the post-discharge live, where he was very clearly shy about being on camera and even said so more than once, that he needed time to get back to a condition where he felt comfortable again to show himself. cut to a psychopath trying to break into his house hours later, fast forward to people stalking him all over vacation while trying to safely film a show for us, jump to people analyzing his every move trying to find proof that he's dating ten different people at once every time he breathes in an airport or a restaurant. imagine coming out of conscription to this. his autonomy to exist on this planet without problems has never seemed less his than it does now.

yet despite all this, DESPITE ALL OF IT, he never lets any of it affect his relationship with army when he has every single right to. he always comes back around when he's ready and i don't know how he does it, but i wish people could learn how to be patient with him again. because if i were jungkook. i'd be exactly as turned off to interacting with fans as people speculate he is, but that's never really the case. he's just introverted! he's also shy and i think people don't remember that part about him! he's comfortable with us, yes, but the environment matters. the context matters. when his privacy is hanging by a thread as often as his is, all of it matters. it's human nature to retreat. it's normal to not have his attention for a while. it's healthy to have boundaries. it's safe to keep to himself. i wish people gave him the grace to just Be. because how sweet it feels when he finally pops up will never get old and it's a privilege we have that i think a lot of people take for granted and don't appreciate at face value.

anyway i think that's all. basically i want people to leave jungkook alone and stop projecting personalities onto him that aren't fact and for newer fans to maybe reel it in a little with the dramatics.....you have a lot to learn, my friend lol

That fanart is perfectly acceptable to monetize but fanfiction isn't. Not talking about copyright law, just in terms of fandom etiquette. There are people that make a consistent income out of fanart and fanmerch and commissions of copyrighted characters, but tell someone you took ONE writing commission or dare to have a Ko-Fi linked somewhere and they'll call the copyright holders themselves to make an example out of you. I know why it's more complicated legally, culturally people just don't think writing is as valuable of a skill.

The Identity of the Man in Yellow

These are just my speculations but you still have to have watched S3E10 of FROM to get all the references. So it's not exactly spoiler-y because S3 ended weeks ago, but if you haven't caught up with all the episodes it is, lol.

The first thing I want to say is that I havent't found anybody talking about the significance of the color yellow and it's a bit weird because it's such a glaring thing! I'd like to write about it because the use of colors in general but in American media is always very precise. I mean, yes, color studies and film studies go hand in hand but also I've always been fascinated by how American writers are very intentional with their choice of colors in their works (Poe and Melville with white, Hawthorne and red, Morrison and blue, Perkins Gilman and yellow but also Fitzgerald and yellow/gold etc).

If it wasn't clear enough before, it is now: one of FROM's undercurrent themes is race. This is why I'm baffled by people being confused as to who the monsters are. I mean, guys, please. An eerie town stuck in the fifties, isolated, in the middle of nowhere. Where there's a sign for a motel but no motel (which I take as an unwillingness to welcome foreigners but an interest in luring them in). Where all monsters are white (I have things to say about the Kimono Girl but I won't now) and blood is represented as being infectious and carrier of weird things&death.

I think it's safe to say that one of the meanings of the monsters is to represent the cultural anxities of white people around racial purity. Throw in the Civil War soldiers, the never spoken-about-but-it's-there Vietnam War and the fact that Boyd is black and his wife Abby is white and their son Ellis marries Fatima and that from their union SYMBOLICALLY (I have to highlight this word everytime) a monster is reborn... That the monsters want to BREAK Boyd... There's no escape, the monsters are all about race.

So what does this have to do with the Man in Yellow? (It's a long post)

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I believe that the Man in Yellow is Jim's father.

No, not his actual father, rather the reincarnation of Jim's father. I don't know how to technically fit this into the reincarnation aspect, but, I believe, just like Tabitha and Jade are destined to go back to the town to save the children (and fail), the Man in Yellow is destined to go back to the town to continue the abuse (and succeed). Because the thing about the cycle of abuse is not only about victims who keep being sacrificed but also about abusers who keep doing the sacrifice. And since the sacrifice is all about parents and children... the Man in Yellow must be someone's father and my money's on Jim.

If you really think about it, it makes sense because monsters are connected with immortality but they were CLEARLY scammed by someone because, surprise!, they can very much die. Sure, they can be reborn the same as before (not reincarnated) but they need actual people there for them to come back. Which means that someone must send/attract/lure these people to the town.

It's not a coincidence that a lot of screen-time is given to Jasper, the ventriloquist dummy. To me the monsters are like the dummy so there must be a ventriloquist as well.

The facts are these:

in the pilot the little girl opens the window because the monster tells her that she's her grandma. It's established from day 1 that we need to watch out for grandparents or people claiming to be them;

the father of said child MUST die because he failed to protect his child (and wife). In hindsight THAT was a HUGE clue;

right before the Matthews met the tree (lol), Jim says how he wishes things were like they were before and recalls the day he and Tabitha met her parents. Tabitha says that she was terrified that they wouldn't like him. So the theme of fear is very much connected to that of the parents' parents since the very first scenes of the show;

for the love of all that is holy I cannot find this scene but I am SURE that, at one ONE point in season 2, Ethan asks Jim if they will ever see Thomas and his (Ethan's) grandfather again. By linking Thomas with his grandpa I think it's safe to assume that grandpa is dead just like Thomas is. Now it could be Tabitha's father but I think Ethan's talking about Jim's here;

in season 3 when Jim talks with Henry in the bar he mentions that his father was/is (I don't remember but, see above, I think grandpa is dead) an alcoholic. He says this because he recounts the night Julie was born because that night he went to a bar and decided to quit drinking because he didn't want to be like his father;

the link between the Stevens and the Matthews is Julie. Future!Julie saves Boyd by giving him the rope (even if she doesn't know that there's Boyd in that shaft) and Boyd saves Julie in return from whatever happened to her, Randall and Marielle in S2. In a similar fashion, future!Julie will try to save Jim, although she seems to be unsuccessful;

music: Boyd had to destroy the music-box to save Julie and the others and, in so doing, he destroyed his chance to uncover his past (well, this is my hypothesis tbh). On the other hand, music allows Tabitha and Jade to remember and, potentially, to save the children;

Boyd's father, thus Ellis's grandfather had Parkison's and Boyd thinks he has it too;

and now for the meatier part: Jim and the Man in Yellow scene in "Revelations" and Boyd and Smiley scene in "Pas de deux".

The scenes:

In "Pas de Deux" Boyd is faced with a dilemma: his son, Ellis, needs a blood transfusion because he's been wounded by Dale. However, Boyd had been "infected" by Martin ("infected" is such an ugly word but this is the general vibe that I get from the show and I think it's intentional albeit uncomfortable. Sometimes discomfort is important) and doesn't want to "pass it on" to his son. Kenny, Boyd's putative son, steps in and accepts to get whatever Boyd has in his blood "passed on to him" so that Boyd can be free and Ellis can be saved.

Boyd solves the dilemma by going out into the night, slit one of the monsters' throat and pass his blood on to the monster. In a surprising turn of events, the same monster, so-called Smiley, will turn out to be Boyd's SYMBOLICAL nephew. Smiley is what comes out from Fatima's pregnancy and Fatima is Ellis' wife. It's stated in the show multiple times that, before it was revelead that the pregnancy was real/unreal, Boyd would become a grandfather (I mean, of course, but like, mentioning it was meant to focus our attention to Boyd becoming a grandpa, not just an obvious, throwaway line like "oh you'll become a grandpa, you're old haha").

Therefore, when Boyd says to the monster "My blood is your blood now" he wasn't... wrong.

In "Revelations: Part Two" the Man in Yellow appears in the woods, by the RV where Jim and Julie are. He also slits Jim's throat and tells him that "knowledge comes with a cost". Since the previous scene had established that the "monsters" sacrificed their children (the "cost") to gain immortality, I think there's room to see the Man in Yellow as sacrificing his child (the "cost") making Jim the Man in Yellow's son.

My hypothesis is reinforced by all of the above facts but specifically about the scene with Boyd and Smiley in S2 because these two scenes are visually very, very similar. This would be good news because it could mean that Jim can "resurrect" just like Smiley did (hopefully in a different, less gory way).

There's also the element of Future!Julie linking both Boyd and Jim as father-figures to be saved.

Would this make Ethan closer to Ellis/Kenny in terms of narrative function? I don't know, Ethan baffles me because we know from day one that he's a super-key element to "solve" the story but the writers are rightfully doing their best to cover the answers they've disseminated throughout three seasons. So it's not easy to fully understand him but one thing is sure: he's connected to the Man in Yellow by the color yellow.

To sum up: Boyd and Man in Yellow are grandfathers of monsters. They represent the ancestors, if you will. This is the reason why the monsters are so obsessed with Boyd and want to break him. Boyd is the antagonist in the Man in Yellow's immutable, immortal story while he is the protagonist in our story.

Their sons are Ellis/Kenny (whom Boyd didn't want to sacrifice) and Jim (whom the Man in Yellow definitely wants to sacrifice). This also makes Jim and Smiley stand very closely to each other. Julie is Boyd's symbolical daughter and Jim's actual daughter. She managed to save the first at a cost (what happened to her in S2 started because of Boyd) but couldn't save Jim who, in turn, had to bear the weight of the cost of having helped Jade and Tabitha unearth their past.

The show is about reincarnation, generational trauma and children sacrifice. There's an element of "what goes around comes around" that must be stopped or this "cost" will keep be "passed on" from character to character and from parents to children. In other words, the story must be changed,

Mothers are shown to be the ones who are bent on breaking the cycle while fathers seem to keep repeating it because they haven't shared light on their trauma, yet. In this respect, Jim, if he ever makes it out alive, is/was actually closer to Boyd in breaking the cycle. For example, Jim clealry states that he doesn't want to be like his father, while Boyd is shown to believe that he also has Parkison's just like his father had (I insist on the "believe" part because Boyd refuses to be examined by Kristi and says that he "knows he has it" but I think he's being an unreliable narrator here). This makes me think that Boyd is convinced that he will end up just like his father, even if he says that the town won't break him. Perhaps he already feels broken inside. In "spirit" he's much more like the Man in Yellow than Jim is.

In all season finales Boyd is undergound which is a symbol of the unconscious and repressed trauma. A good indicator of whether he's gonna make it to the end alive or not will be to check S4 finale: if Boyd is still shown in an underground, dark place I don't think a happy ending is in for him. Ultra Sad Face.

You might have noticed that my first point (and the show's first introduction of the monsters) is about a grandmother. So how do grandmothers fit in all this?

There are also several grandmothers in the show: Tabitha's mother who we only hear on the phone (just like the Man in Yellow before his appearance); Elgin's grandmother who, I believe, was the person he was supposed to go see when he took that fateful bus; Tillie and her seven grandchildren (just like the number of the angkoohey kids) and, finally, Jim's mother, the piano teacher whose teachings proved to be THE key to solve the numbers' enigma. This brings me to my final point:

Jim's mentioning his mother in "Revelations" reveals that the Man in Yellow is his father (or, rather, his father's reincarnation). Why?

The facts are these II:

the last three scenes of "Revelations" are about remembrance, birth and death. Two parents remember their child, one "child" is born and the grandfather watches his "birth", Jim dies and his child watches him "dying";

the two parents were able to recognize their child because of Jim's mother's teachings;

Boyd watches the birth of his "nephew";

the Man in Yellow kills Jim while Julie watches.

There's a signifier vacuum around Jim in all these scenes: he's a father-figure for sure but right now he's a son, a child. His mother's child. And as one "child" is born... one "child" dies. And this child is Jim. Jim is a sacrificed child. This makes the Man in Yellow his father, because the sacrifice of the town is not about random kids: parents must kill their children. And so the Man in Yellow kills Jim. And so the father sacrifices his child.

In S3 of FROM we got a "I am your child" moment.

In S4 of FROM we'll get a "I am your father" moment.

1... craig and clyde make a trading ring where they collect and display a variety of shit from the other kids at school, mostly trading cards, action figures, beyblades, and hotwheels. Meanwhile Wendy and Bebe have been competing with chalk art around town, seeing who has the best drawing. It keeps ending in a draw mostly because they keep deeming everyone as a biased party. They're kind of angry at each other but pretending nothing is happening then they get home from school to watch a million tutorials.

Anyway, the day of the big trading event Craig and Clyde get there with their big wagon of random shit and the girls are there and they argue over who gets to use the blacktop for a while but eventually come to the agreement that the girls will draw over it and then they will use it as their venue and let the traders vote :3

Marj is a dancer, Kenny's a photographer, Stan's a poet, and Eric is a film dude. Kyle is somewhere else studying something else that is completely relevant. HOWEVER! I'd need help writing poems so if anyone could write epic sauce poems we could like fr write stenny together... heh.... 👅

curious your opinion on this, since I always have a hard time deciding;

when the new transformers movie comes out, or really any animated movie in general, would you like to see them in theaters? or wait for it to stream?

I think it would be cool and exciting to see it loud and on the big screen, but I recognize that like. the is a series primarily targeted at children and this one is particular had trailers with all the usual "get kids in seats" kind of lines and tones. Not that the movie will follow that vibe to a T! but it's gunning for that crowd. And I think as an adult, I'd personally be a little overwhelmed in a theater with lots of kids. so I'll probably wait a while for it. or... you know 🦜🏴‍☠️⛵️

Honestly these days I only end up seeing one or two movies in theaters a year tops. (I have nothing against piracy for big studio stuff, but I'd rather not watch a shitty camrip.) This is due to a variety of factors, mainly the fact that I don't have a car and the fact that I'm dating someone who doesn't really care about seeing stuff in theaters that often. I feel weird Ubering to the theater to watch a movie alone. This is a me problem, I know. But it needs to be something I just HAVE to see ASAP for me to bother. In practice this has primarily meant the Sonic films because, you know, I have to post my takes to TKP in a timely fashion. The odds of me seeing Transformers One in theaters are therefore pretty low by default. I saw Bumblebee in theaters, but not Rise of the Beasts

Anyway, yeah, theater crowds can be a pain. Obviously I'm not bothered that children are going to be going to see a movie that was marketed towards them, be it an animated kids' movie or a Star War or whatever, but nobody likes being in a theater with crying toddlers and parents who doesn't know how to calm them down. Though honestly my bigger worry with some animated movies are the adult fans being obnoxious. This is why I never went and saw any of the MLP movies with theatrical runs when they were in theaters. Thankfully I didn't experience anything like that with Sonic 1 or 2 lol. I had that sweet spot where the kids were chill and the adult fans reacted to stuff but weren't shouting meme references or whatever

Really though, if you wanna avoid a theater jam packed full of rowdy kids, the answer is just to wait a week or two after release and go to a screening that's either 1) late at night or 2) early in the day on a school day. That usually works pretty well. And if you wanna see it, you should see it

Well, Andor is over. Kind of a bittersweet feeling. Was surprisingly quiet as the end to the show, especially a Star Wars show, which I can appreciate, but it also makes sense because Rogue One is arguably the TRUE climax for this story.

Last week's arc was easily my favourite of the season, and while some of the issues of this season's broader timeline did show in this final arc, it was still pretty good.

Even if I prefer Season 1 in terms of overall quality, Andor is still better than other live-action Star Wars shows as a whole, as much as there's stuff I really like from some of the others.

I actually appreciate that as a series finale, it was much quieter than one would expect, especially for a Star Wars show. That aspect works for me, because not only is the true climax of these events Rogue One, but Andor is much more of a drama than action show.

I will say this final arc probably got the least emotional reaction out of me, probably because of how much I knew where it was going. Even so, there were still moments I had reactions to, and my nerd side did enjoy seeing the pieces for Rogue One fall into place.

And even then, we still got a few unexpected surprises (including one I apparently theorised ages ago? lol). It is kind of a bittersweet, even slightly underwhelming end, but then you remember it's meant to serve Rogue One. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.

I will say that I definitely would love to see many of these characters again, even if they just pop up in books or comics sometimes. I do actually sympathise with the idea of a Galactic Civil War show, though maybe some of the New Republic stuff could bring these faces back?

And yeah, I was mulling that the overall quality of shows like Mandalorian and Ahsoka not being as good, but I AM still a Star Wars fan, not just an Andor fan. I do like variety in this universe. In fact, it's what drew me to Andor in the first place. Everyone else just happened to be into it, too. And even then, I know it's too much for some people, but again, that's the beauty of Star Wars, other stories can still explore these themes.

Whether you think they have the level of quality or depth/complexity that Andor has is your call, but you can still find substance and similar themes in other Star Wars works, especially if you look beyond film and TV.

Not sure what I'm saying besides I'd love to see something else like this, especially since a lot of the upcoming projects so far do seem to lean more into the fun action adventure stuff. I hope that stuff's good, I'd just be down for something more serious and grounded too.

And like, it's not like people can't bring the level of writing, filmmaking, production etc Andor has to different genres, either. I AM a Clone Wars and Rebels fan, after all. Some things can be simpler, and they don't need to be more than that. But I think Star Wars is at its best when its pointed in what it has to say, when it genuinely forces people to talk about its substance.

It's not even a kids vs adults thing - stuff like Bad Batch actually has some episodes with surprisingly similar content to Andor, and even if Bad Batch arguably skews older than even a Clone Wars audience, people still mostly focus on animation being a kids thing (regrettably).

Okay, this is pretty incoherent. Just wanna say I love this show, love the stuff it does, and would love something else like it even if it's not the exact same kind of story, even as I'm eager for very different kinds of stories (bring on Maul: Shadow Lord!).

Last thing: like anyone, I do wish we got the original 5 season plan, but I think they still made something pretty great even knowing they wouldn't have been able to do that. You can see where it would've helped the show, but better do it like this than burn everyone out and watch everything crumble overtime, especially in an increasingly unpredictable media landscape. Go out with a bang rather than a whimper.

real talk, i have not been so instantly engaged by a film in a long time—before we even got the title screen, the sharp instrumentals and gorgeous, closeup angles had me LOCKED IN.

DISCLAIMER: this reviewer was raised extremely roman catholic. like “daily mass + weekly confession + was an altar server + went to summer camp run by nuns (which is its own post entirely) + L + ratio” roman catholic. i have not however attended mass in several years (to the deep regret of my mother), so my papal lore was a lil rusty going in. i WILL say though that hearing the mass in latin activated some kind of sleeper agent in my head that made me crave the smell of incense ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1) literally every value of production here was off the chain: production design, cinematography, acting, score, costume, direction… the oscars mean nothing to me however. i hope they fuckin SWEEP

2) when lawrence told adeyemi that due to the scandal he would never be pope, theo yelled “POPE NOPE” & that was basically the resounding theme every time a prospective pope got noped

3) our ~legally acquired stream~ purported to have subtitles, but for the life of me i could not get them to work, and missed most of the italian and spanish dialogue. the acting was excellent and the tone clear enough that i was able to grasp the gist of it, but i plan on rewatching ASAP with correct subtitles! in the meantime, here’s the screenplay if anyone else had the same issue 🫶

4) i have seen a few posts about it, but want to reiterate the choice to focus on the work done by the sisters to keep the entire vatican running smoothly (both during the conclave, and outside of it). i won’t get into the giant can of worms that is gender roles & women in the modern catholic church (not enough fuckin hours for that), BUT i deeply appreciated the constant presence of nuns doing all the manual labour in the background. and isabella rossellini as sister agnes killed it!! the moment with the photocopier visually drove home the fact that even lawrence—the dean of the entire vatican!—was not savvy to the daily minutiae of running a household or office, and required the sisters’ assistance to literally make paper copies

5) some IRL catholics are BIG mad about the portrayal of the vatican conclave as a pack of double-crossing, tea-spilling, messy fuckass bitches—which of course confirms to me that the depiction is fairly accurate!!! looking forward to reading the book as well, since i’ve heard that certain aspects are even better fleshed out

6) fun little nod for all my polar exploration fans: conclave director edward berger also directed episodes 1, 2, and 4 of the terror, and hoo boy did his distinctive style absolutely VIBE here. apologies to theo & our housemate, because i kept hooting and hollering my way through shots like this one:

Mollish, what kind of five stars dish are you cooking with the chapter?!

Let me get this straight: You have reached the 100 pages mark, and (if you haven't already past it) have written, atleast, 80k words.

For those who are like "that not a lot", let me put this into prespective.

Firstly, "The Great Gatsby" is a novel that has a count of **looks at Google* about 47k words (if you don't want the unrounded number, there are 47.094), as indicated by the source.

Secondly, a 100 pages are A LOT. It's true that depending on style of the font and how big it is, it can affect the canvas. Let's say that Mollish writes with the standard Calibri 12 Word offers when booted up. A single page can hold an small introduction, a text body about 3-4 paragraphs and a conclusion. All that is about 200-300 words. Do you see what I mean?

Finally, if you still haven't seen what I mean, is that those hundred pages and 80k words are NOT different chapters. These. Are. For. A. Singular. Chapter.

In conclusion, Mollish (aka, you, yes you, the one who is reading this) has written more words than a novel, the book itself is more or less as long as a children's book [a 100 pages is about a half an inch (???) ( about 7 milimetres or 1 whole centimetre)], and is doing all of this for a chapter of a fanfic for an AU about a project a creachur that films themselves playing games named "Ranboo" made, just because she feels like it.

We must appreciate the work and time she has putted behind the writting ( AND drawings) for Unperson.

Let me just say "Thank you Mollish for creating the AU and lending it the time and care it needs to grow."

I know I've been saying it for weeks now, but I promise I'm nearly done! Today I finally hit the 100 page mark and have just passed 42,000 words (making the entire fic nearly 100,000 words long!) :D

As there was so much I needed to do with this chapter (you'll see what I mean by that when it releases), I had to make it really long. I doubt chapter 5 will be anywhere near the same length, but of course I can't say for sure until I'm actually writing it lol

I should be finished with writing Chapter 4 in the next few days, and then I pass it on to my beta reader for edit suggestions. While they're reading it, I can use that time to finish working on the cover art and the (many) website updates that will accompany the chapter itself!

The corresponding audiobook chapter won't be out for a while yet as after I release this chapter I need to actually record an entire audiobook for a client (yippee!!), but as soon as that's done I'll get on to dubbing my own work again (and then of course beginning work on Chapter 5)!

Thank you all again so much for your patience and support, especially through this prolongued hiatus. The wait has been a lot longer than I anticipated, but so is the chapter, so hopefully that makes up for it haha

Ok but seriously, this specific line has been haunting me for months because I was like "there's no way that's the original line right? Is there actually an Italian equivalent to the R slur or was the translator just having a bad day???" WELL TODAY I HAVE SOLVED THE CONUNDRUM ONCE AND FOR ALL. And the truth is:

Trip was fucking FRAMED!!! The original insult used was "babbeo" which, based on everything I can source online, roughly translates to "fool" or "idiot" or any other derogatory name that's basically just calling someone stupid. So like THEORETICALLY it could be translated to the R slur but it's a bit of an extreme take 😭

Anyways I'm not saying that Trip WOULDN'T say slurs, just that I needed closure and I finally have it.
